Hi Kumar,

In my company I have several report that also print the barcode. I think it
isn't big deal if you have font that support the character of barcode.

RE: Barcode Generation in Forms/Reports

2003-02-05 Thread Abdul Aleem
Nitheesh,

Please note that bar code is no special thing other than representing
characters in bars.

You can use a font called bar code font that represents characters as bars.
A free version is available to download at www.idautomation.com

The barcode device connected to a computer reads the barcode, and writes its
equivalent numbers at current cursor position. If you cursor is in a text
item in a forms it will display the numbers there, if you cursor is in a
text editor like notepad it will write the numbers there. As if it was typed
in through a keyboard.

Now if you set the font of the field to the barcode font, these characters
will be displayed as a barcode. Both forms and reports support barcode font.

HTH!

Aleem

Hello list members. A colleague of
mine has written a small Windows client utility that allows you to view the
SQL statements being issued by another client application. The utility has to
be running on the same machine as the other client application.
I use it myself pretty often instead of turning on tracing a
  session.
His description says: - Displays SQL
statements that come from processes in real-time, eliminating the necessity to
turn on tracing and look into poorly formatted trace file
  - Allows monitoring NT services -
Displays logon attempts, both successful and unsuccessful (username, password,
tns alias, success) - Performs syntax highlighting
  - Displays values of bind variables for SQL statements
  - Shows even statements that fail to execute. Displays
Oracle error code and message for those statements. -
Allows to copy and paste statements from the output to one of your SQL
analyzing tools (TOAD, SQL Navigator, or even SQL*Plus)
  - Monitors applications like Import/Export, SQLoader, Server
Manager (svrmgrl.exe), as well as applications written with Oracle Forms or
  Pro*C
  - Supports Oracle clients starting with version 7.3
  - It's FREE!
He has told me that I can publicize it on the list. All he
asks is some feedback / bug reports. Here's the
  link: http://www.fastalgo.com/
P.S. You should send the feedback to him and not to me.

Oracle DB License - "Named User Multi Server"

2003-02-05 Thread Hemant K Chitale

When you buy a "Named User" license do you generally
buy a "Named User Single Server" license or a
"Named User Multi Server" license for the Oracle Database ?

The "Named User Multi Server" license should mean that
a person "A" can connect to any number of databases -- ergo,
as long as the number of users "n" at your site
does not exceed the "Named User" count, it does not
matter how many databases "m" you create.

The license my organisation had negotiated [when many seperate purchased license
orders were combined into one]
a few years ago is "Named User Multi Server".

Oracle Migration Workbench for Sybase

2003-02-05 Thread Deshpande, Kirti
Hello Listers,
Anyone used this tool? What was your experience like?
I am planning on using it to move about 20GB of data from a Sybase 11.x database to
Oracle 8i (Rel 3). This is a one time activity. Flat file route (using Sybase 'bcp')
is the alternate solution. I would like see if we could use OMWB for this. The doc
says I need "Sybase Adaptive Server ODBC driver Release 3.11.00.01". Searched Sybase
web site for this driver, but failed to locate it.
 Any ideas about its source?

 Thanks.

RE: How to create a new oracle database from SVRMGRL??

2003-02-05 Thread Jacques Kilchoer
Title: RE: How to create a new oracle database from SVRMGRL??

If I may be so bold as to add a few details
on a UNIX server you can just fire up sqlplus (or svrmgrl for older versions of Oracle) and issue the create database statement.

On a Windows server you must first create the service with oradim. For example:

%ORACLE_HOME%\bin\oradim -NEW -SID %ORACLE_SID% -startmode m -pfile D:\Oradmin\%ORACLE_SID%\pfile\init%ORACLE_SID%.ora -intpwd my_secret_password -maxusers 4

-startmode m means startmode manual - the instance must be manually started after system reboot.
-intpwd is the password for the sys user
-maxusers 4 is the maximum number of users that can be given SYSDBA capability

Once you've created the database and all the tablespaces, you may want to do the following to avoid annoying warnings everytime you startup SQL*Plus:

create PRODUCT_PROFILE with this script
$ORACLE_HOME/sqplus/admin/pupbld.sql
(I usually create it in the SYSTEM schema)

Create Plus_Trace role
$ORACLE_HOME/sqplus/admin/plustrce.sql

To install SQL*Plus help, look for a file called
%ORACLE_HOME%\bin\helpins.bat on windows
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/helpins on UNIX

Finally, don't forget to change the passwords for SYS, SYSTEM, and other users automatically created by the database creation scripts. And change the TEMPORARY tablespace for users to something other than SYSTEM.

SAN, Heterogenous environments, Backups

2003-02-05 Thread Hemant K Chitale

We are considering implementing a SAN,
using Sun StorEdge SS9970 [OEM from Hitachi], where database
servers will be a mix of Sun Solaris and HP HPUX
running Oracle 8i, 9i, 9iRAC [in phase-2].

As the database files will be on File Systems [Sun or HP],
the solutions provider says that backups of the
HP file systems cannot be done by the backup server
running Solaris.
The proposal is to use "shadow copies". The Sun Engineer
says that the "shadow copy" must be mounted as a file
system on the backup server and as the backup server is
a Sun server it wouldn't be able to mount the HP file system.

How are Heterogenous implementations on a SAN done ? How are backups done ?

I went to a seminar on Logminer about a year ago. As I remember you can only
use it against 8.0 or better database logfiles due to the change in rowid's that
occurred.

Can logminer be used against 7.3 databases (or rather: 7.3 logfiles)
like it can be used against 8.0?

why add another component to the mix?  You will now have to deal with

windows application to show sql being executed by a client progra

2003-02-05 Thread Jacques Kilchoer
Title: windows application to show sql being executed by a client program

Hello list members.
A colleague of mine has written a small Windows client utility that allows you to view the SQL statements being issued by another client application. The utility has to be running on the same machine as the other client application.

I use it myself pretty often instead of turning on tracing a session.

His description says:
- Displays SQL statements that come from processes in real-time, eliminating the necessity to turn on tracing and look into poorly formatted trace file

- Allows monitoring NT services
- Displays logon attempts, both successful and unsuccessful (username, password, tns alias, success)
- Performs syntax highlighting
- Displays values of bind variables for SQL statements
- Shows even statements that fail to execute. Displays Oracle error code and message for those statements.
- Allows to copy and paste statements from the output to one of your SQL analyzing tools (TOAD, SQL Navigator, or even SQL*Plus)

- Monitors applications like Import/Export, SQLoader, Server Manager (svrmgrl.exe), as well as applications written with Oracle Forms or Pro*C

- Supports Oracle clients starting with version 7.3
- It's FREE!

He has told me that I can publicize it on the list. All he asks is some feedback / bug reports.
Here's the link:

P.S. You should send the feedback to him and not to me.

RE: Windows 2000 Cluster on oracle

2003-02-05 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Stephen - I appreciate your comments. One of the hard things for me to
understand is that if you're going to be working on W2K, better plan on
being the administrator. At Unix sites we tend to have DBAs supported by sys
admins. Some shops may indeed treat W2K that way. But usually if you are
always asking the NT administrator to do tasks that the sys admins always
insisted they do on Unix, you end up being viewed as some sort of novice or
old crank that isn't self-sufficient like everyone else.
At our company, to get around some issues of developers just messing
around with production W2K servers like it was their own PC, we are looking
to the ITIL standards and creating a staging server between test and
production. This will be a mirror of production. Software and installation
instructions will be provided by developers. A test install will be
performed on staging, and some tests performed. If everything is okay, then
it will be scheduled for a production install. If problems are encountered,
it will be bounced back to the developers to get their act together. Has
anyone tried this? Overkill/impractical?

The biggest problem that I have seen is (to me anyway) not one of stability
(I'll leave that to the bare-metal boys to argue about) but that it is not
really multi-user. I think it only supports two users.

1. You're an administrator and can do anything you want.
2. You're not an administrator and can't do squat.

The idea of an application owner, somewhere in between -- someone who needs
to stop and start the app; install patches and upgrades to the app; but only
have access to his/her stuff and nobody else's stuff -- doesn't seem to be
well supported. So the person who has a web app on the same box as your
database has complete access (or can take it) to any of your stuff.

Then there is the issue of all the missing Unix scripting utilities ...
which I suppose you can install ... if you are *THE* administrator and not
just *AN* administrator ... because we sure don't want *AN* administrator
pissing off *THE* administrator ... which the Oracle DBA in a company of any
size probably is not. And you have to listen to *THE* administrators
constantly whine about the Oracle DBA being *AN* administrator, and
"accidentally" revoking the DBA's admin privileges from time to time.

Then there is the issue of doing all your admin stuff on a 28K dial-up line
after hours; NOT where you want to use a GUI! But *THE* administrators have
only made provision for their easy dial-up access; and screw anyone who
might only be *AN* administrator.

> Windows is cheaper than SUN. Linux is cheaper than Windows.

Try comparing prices for a large Dell Xeon box versus a Sun V880 box. The
bigger you get, the more competitive the mainline Unix boys get.

RE: Hanging query puzzle

2003-02-05 Thread Deshpande, Kirti
Jeff,

If you see the SEQ# field in the v$session_wait view not incrementing, then something
else, other than Oracle, is causing a hang up...

On AIX, if you have AIO enabled, try running 'aiostat'. It will show if there are any
pending AIO requests. The difficult part would be to relate those pending calls to
your session. It is quite likely that a particular AIO server may show waits on I/O,
if this hang up is IO related. You can try 'pstat' to find out AIO server processes
and associated 'pid' to dig deeper.

If you do not have 'aiostat', ring up IBM Support. It is a nice utility to have, and
it is free.

For those on AIX 5L, can you please check if 'aiostat' is available as a standard
distribution? I was told by IBM Support that 'aiostat' was going to be available with
AIX 5L.

It looks like your process really is stuck
in a way that has nothing to do with the
Oracle code directly.

You might look at the CPU usage of your
session and its shadow using an O/S
utility, but I suspect it would show
zero CPU. Perhaps truss (or the AIX
equivalent) might show your process
spinning on whatever call equates to
'has the async read completed yet'.

You could try doing three processstate
dumps with 5 second intervals to see if
the processstate shows any changes
which might give you a hint - but again
I'd GUESS that you'll find nothing happening.

VMware

2003-02-05 Thread SusanK

All,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience (good or bad) with the use of VMware on Oracle database servers? I am hearing rumors within my company that management is looking to utilize VMware to consolidate our WindowsNT/2000 database servers (test, development, and production). At this point I have not been able to find much information relating to the use of VMware in an Oracle environment and I am curious if it is widely used. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Jonathan, Charlie, Denny:   Thanks for the replies.    Our SA's claim that there's
nothing wrong with the EMC SAN/disk.   Finally, made them give me errpt access (they
had shut off execute privs from all but them) and got a lot of output like below.

The SAs are saying that this is only a sporadic 'repathing' error, as we have
4 channels to the SAN, and does not affect the data in anyway, except for possibly
some 'speed'.    Now, 'sporadic' exactly describes the problem.    I tracked down the
dates on this errpt and they do correlate to the dates when we encountered hang
problems in the database.

What exactly would they mean by 'repathing'?   Possibly related to Jonathan's hint
on spinning on 'has the async read completed yet'?

It looks like your process really is stuck
in a way that has nothing to do with the
Oracle code directly.

You might look at the CPU usage of your
session and its shadow using an O/S
utility, but I suspect it would show
zero CPU.  Perhaps truss (or the AIX
equivalent) might show your process
spinning on whatever call equates to
'has the async read completed yet'.

You could try doing three processstate
dumps with 5 second intervals to see if
the processstate shows any changes
which might give you a hint - but again
I'd GUESS that you'll find nothing happening.

SQL Tuning Help

2003-02-05 Thread sundeep maini
Oracle 8.1.7.4 on HP-UX

I am using collections to pass multiple values from client to the

produce the results but the without the RULE hint the response is
dramatically slower. Following is just one of the examples but I have
many many queries which exhibit the same behavior.

I have tried both versions IN (TABLE(CAST( as a predicate and as a
pseudo-table in FROM (as in the query above) and it made no
difference to the plan. I searched askTOM and heard similar
sentiments about performance being echoed by other users but no
solutions.

Any tips or insights as to how to avoid the full table scans (all of
which are 10-100M in size) of the large table without the RULE hint.
A more thorough explanation of what is happening and why would be a
bonus.

Then there is the issue of all the missing Unix scripting utilities ...

Right. Sorry for the misnomenclature. Whoops, that's not actually a word.
:) I associated "raw" with "FS", instead of "volume". My faux pas.

I wanted to determine the need for RHAS for a test setup, and if there were
any differences in the RHAS' purchase levels that would affect a production
box.

Thx!

OCFS = Oracle Cluster File System. An open source project lead
by Wim Coekaerts from Oracle. There is no such thing as raw FS,
it's just raw (without any file system). And I just learned about
this NBD (Network Block Device) from this list. So that's a third
option.

I think it's just the support that's different in base vs standard and
premium.
RH made the source RPM available for download, there are litertlly thousands
of
them.

And to answer your previous e-mail, you don't necessarily need RHAS to play
with
RAC. The only reason you need RHAS is if you want to use OCFS.

In the same vane, does anyone know the difference between the "Base",
"Standard", and "Premium" versions of RH AS2.1? And will any of these work
with 9i RAC (if the difference is more than just support)? And I don't
suppose it's available for download anywhere for testing, is it?

The RedHat site isn't very helpful here...

RE: Size of a Long Field

2003-02-05 Thread Richard Ji
This is for LONG. For LONG RAW, you could use utl_raw.length
or use a C or Java program to read it and calculate the length.

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION l_length(cTabName varchar2,
cColName varchar2,
cRowid varchar2)
RETURN NUMBER
IS
   cur_id integer;
   buff   varchar2(32767);
   leninteger;
   offset integer;
   v_length integer;
   stmt varchar2(500);
   retinteger;
BEGIN
  stmt :=  ' SELECT  '|| cColName || ' FROM  ' || cTabName ||
   ' WHERE rowid = '||||cRowid||;
  cur_id := dbms_sql.open_cursor;
  dbms_sql.parse(cur_id, stmt, dbms_sql.NATIVE);
  dbms_sql.define_column_long(cur_id, 1);
  ret := dbms_sql.execute(cur_id);
  IF (dbms_sql.fetch_rows(cur_id) > 0 )
  THEN
offset := 0;
  len := 0;
LOOP
 dbms_sql.column_value_long(cur_id, 1,32767, offset,
 buff,  v_length);
 len := len + v_length;
EXIT  WHEN v_length < 32767;
  offset := offset + v_length;
END LOOP;
  END IF;
  dbms_sql.close_cursor(cur_id);
  return( len );
END;

Not easy. If your LONG is shorter than 32767, then you can, in a PL/SQL
function, fetch it into a VARCHAR2 of this size (allowed in PL/SQL) and
aplly LENGTH() to this VARCHAR2. Assuming the suitable Oracle version, I
think there is somewhere a function to convert LONGs to CLOBs - to which
you can apply a function. With Pro*C or the OCIs, you can derived the
length from the error you get when fetching into too small a buffer ...

RE: RMAN - questions.. Rob Freeman?

2003-02-05 Thread Freeman Robert - IL
Is this all live OLTP type data, or might some of the data be made
read-only? How much will the data be growing and changing (if not a great
deal then look into incrementals). I can't begin to guess at the time
required those numbers are all factors of:

1. # of backup devices you will be backing up to (I'd suggest several,
minimum of probably 6).

2. Speed of backup devices.

3. Speed of infrastructure from DB to the backup devices.

Given a best case, lots of backup devices to backup to in parallel, fast
fast infrastructure and really fast (and expensive) equipment, you could
backup 1TB in an hour or two... Realisticly, much much longer, perhaps
upwards of 10-12+ hours at a moderate price range. You could stagger these
backups over the week, backup some tablespaces and all archived redo logs on
day one, other tablespaces and archived redo logs on day two and so on. This
staggered approach will reduce the overhead associated with a large, long
lasting backup.

Recovery of a TB will take a while of course, be prepared for that when
negotiating your SLA's.

A product like BMC's timefinder makes a good primary backup/recovery
solution.

RE: RMAN - questions.. Rob Freeman?

2003-02-05 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Brian - Hopefully Robert will have a chance to respond to your question, but
if I might make some suggestions, I think your recovery time has two
components:
  1. If the backup files are not on disk, the time to locate the tape, load
the files.
  2. RMAN recovery time. I think you will just have to perform some tests on
your equipment. There are several tunable RMAN parameters that will make a
great deal of difference (or not), depending on your hardware. There are
many different types of recovery. Some recoveries may require very little
data from RMAN, others may require a lot. You need to outline (and
eventually test) for the different types of recovery scenarios.
Overall, my experience has been that RMAN offers very fast performance,
usually limited just by disk speeds. But what impresses me may not meet your
needs. I'm easily impressed.

I am considering doing an rman to disk backup and recovery solution for a
500G-- grow to 1terabyte
database. Monster HP servers ... up t0 16 cpu, upto 10,000 concurrent users

This rman would be the secondary recovery solution (Timefinder is the
first).

Anybody know time frames I might be able to restore/backup 500Gig to
1terabyte
of database from disk?

I will perform it before it goes live but I would like get a
ball park idea of restore times before hand so we can determine if it can
fit
in the SLA requirements.

Any parameters to focus on to improve performance other than
 allocating channels?

Thanks for any help

There is a script (last updated Nov 2000) on my
website that gets you part way. But there is no
way you can find out about the contiguity of free blocks
(at least not the ones below the HWM) as you have
to walk every freelist to find all the free blocks, then
sort them into physical order. It is possible, of course,
but not realistic

Check the Miscellaneous menu, then search
for "free space"

You will only know what your system is capable of

It is very dependant on the disk arrays and no of scsi or fibre channels
you have to support those disks

Also RAID level will be a big contributor

How long does it take to copy say a 500MB file from location to location.
check it out this way. see what throughput you are reporting in sar or

Test this between the filesystem your db is on and where you want to put

Re: Hanging query puzzle

2003-02-05 Thread Jonathan Lewis

It looks like your process really is stuck
in a way that has nothing to do with the
Oracle code directly.

You might look at the CPU usage of your
session and its shadow using an O/S
utility, but I suspect it would show
zero CPU. Perhaps truss (or the AIX
equivalent) might show your process
spinning on whatever call equates to
'has the async read completed yet'.

You could try doing three processstate
dumps with 5 second intervals to see if
the processstate shows any changes
which might give you a hint - but again
I'd GUESS that you'll find nothing happening.

RE: Oracle License for Training

2003-02-05 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Jeremy - I should probably have been more specific. :-) Years ago I worked
for a software vendor. They wanted to port their product to Oracle. They
expected to receive complimentary licenses in order to do this. Most vendors
bend over backwards to have you port to their product. Oracle expected that
they would buy licenses just like everybody else. We developers sort of
ended up in the middle, since Oracle Support didn't consider us to exist and
wouldn't allow us to file TARs. Again, this was one experience, and someone
else might have had a different experience.

Heh.

Um, no.

For development they can't be beat; the only thing I miss out on is
Metalink, but my clients usually provide a (legal) access path for that. OTN
is fantastic for developers.

However, for training this statement is true. I ran into this in a big way
when working for a smallish SW company. We developed a slick method of
rolling out the product to a large-scale enterprise, partially using some
proprietary Oracle objects (sequences, PL/SQL, etc). Oracle had no problem
with this. The problem occurred, however, when we wanted to hold private
classes to train our consultants and implementation partners on this method.
We ended up having to buy licenses, and eventually moving the tool to a
non-platform specific means.

We have partinionned this table by range of date.
When we try to create a constraint primary key (with
dedicated tablespace), we fail each time because the database was unable to
  extend temp segment.
1/ Instead of enlarging the temp tablespace undefinatly , is
it possible to create this constraint for each partition so that it would
reduce the amount of temp segment required ?
2/ If not, creating an unique will also be efficient for

DB character set

2003-02-05 Thread Boris Dali
Dear List,

Life was pretty easy here before they came up with
this euro symbol :-( We had WE8ISO8859P1 (the default
I bevieve) as a char set on all Unix and MS (sorry we
have those as well) DBs accross the board.
That was also the client side char set (part of
NLS_LANG) - most clients here are on MS (code page
1252), some browser based.

Well, with euro it looks like they went different
directions:
- On MS: it's recommended to have WE8MSWIN1252 (super
set of good old WE8ISO8859P1)
- On Unix: it's WE8ISO8859P15

My question is:
1. if I want to stick with one char set accross the
board (as we have now) for all DBs on Unix and MS AND
2. avoid (automatic, but not free) conversion on
DB-Client Net communication AND
3. we need euro symbol

is there a painless solution out there?

Thanks,
Boris Dali

There *is* a way to do with global temporary tables

Babu - There are two ways I can think of to do this.
  1. Write a small PL/SQL procedure.
  2. Use the SQL*Plus COPY command.
You will probably use the method that is more familiar to you. Have you
used
either PL/SQL or SQL*Plus COPY before?

Hi everyone

One of my development team is working on ORACLE 8 on NT (Because of client

problem is one column of that table is LONG data type. So I was unable to

7.3.4 upgrade

2003-02-05 Thread Cyril Thankappan
Hi Listers,

I've prepared a small list of steps to follow for
an upgrade of 7.3.4 database to 9.2

However unfortunately I do not have access to a 7.3.4 database

Can one of you who has access to 7.3.4 database, try these steps
out and give me your 'honest' feedback?

Thanks a lot

Re: Hanging query puzzle

2003-02-05 Thread Jonathan Lewis

Just a warning for the future - this is no longer true
on all versions of Oracle 9 because the wait_time
column is a copy of the underlying x$ timing
column rounded from microseconds to hundredths.
Hence the wait_time can show a zero when the
actual time is non-zero.

You should depend only on the STATE column
which is a decode of the basic microsecond value,
and shows 'WAITING' if and only if the microsecond
time is zero.

RE: Where is result set maintained?

2003-02-05 Thread Richard Ji
Stole right from asktom. Thanks Tom. :)

We do not build the result set anywhere in general.

If you do select * from one_billion_row_table -- we fetch the data from the
table as needed -- the results start coming back IMMEDIATELY not after we've
fetched the last row.

For certain types of queries we might build part of the result set or all of
it
(depends). This would take place in RAM upto sort_area_size bytes and then
we
would start paging that out to TEMP.

We find rows 100 to 115 by maintaining a state, called a cursor, on the
server.
It tells us where we left off and where to begin.

When one executes a query, the result set is identified. Fetching the
rows in the result set can be done over a period of time. In what form
does Oracle maintain the result set, and where?

OCFS = Oracle Cluster File System. An open source project lead

Re: Drop datafile.

This command is used to put a datafile in recovery mode, not for
dropping the datafile. Now you either need to do recovery, or drop the
tablespace completely and re-create it.

Simply put, you cannot drop a datafile.

RE: 9i "Reliability" means ?

2003-02-05 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Vivek
To me "reliability" means "won't break". Difficult to get hard data.
You might consider changing the name to "availability", which to me
covers not just reliability, but all aspects of my application being
available to my users. Things like dynamic parameters can be very important
because I may be able to avoid a database "bounce" just to change a
parameter. We've all been there, done that. Oracle nicely divides Oracle9i
features up into those that contribute to a higher availability.
Take a look at the following paper under "Availability":
http://technet.oracle.com/products/oracle9i/pdf/9idb_rel2_features.pdf
The Student Guide for the Oracle9i New Features for Administrators class has
a chapter titled "General High Availability Technology".

I am attempting to RTF google on this, but am not coming up
with much. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tune/manage
toplink from an Oracle DBA perspective?
"Make them stop" doesn't seem to be an option, sadly.

So far the problems I've run into are that it doesn't use
bind variables (and apparently Toplink support - now Oracle!
- asked "why does your DBA want to use bind variables?" )
and I haven't been able to get the Java people to call
dbms_application_info so I know which servlet/procedure/
method/whatever is associated with a given query. I don't
know if the difficulty is the toplink interface, or the
DBA/Java developer interface (lots of impedance mismatch: I'm sure
it's all my fault because I'm stuck in obsolete "relational" mode).
So I need to learn more about this beast.

I'm trying to load the toplink forum from otn.oracle.com but
the page is just hanging.

thanks in advance for any pointers,

Hi List,
We are using Oracle 8.1.7 (64 bits) with Solaris 8
I have a big table with over 300 millions rows (10 Go),
We have partinionned this table by range of date.
When we try to create a constraint primary key (with dedicated
tablespace), we fail each time because the database was unable to extend
temp segment.
1/ Instead of enlarging the temp tablespace undefinatly , is it possible
to create this constraint for each partition so that it would reduce the
amount of temp segment required ?
2/ If not, creating an unique will also be efficient for join ?
Thanks in advance!

Did you try tracing it from the OS ? Any error messages in the OS system

Re: Size of a Long Field

2003-02-05 Thread Stephane Faroult

Dennis,

Using VSize on a Long results in:
ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatype

Just tried in on Trigger_Body in DBA_Triggers. (8.1.7.0.0 on HP-UX).

RE: Connecting to Non Oracle databases from Oracle

2003-02-05 Thread Sunil . Kumar . Gompa
i was successfull in connecting to a Non oracle database from Oracle on unix
through the Listener on Win NT.
this situation arose b'cos we did not have a ODBC setup on Unix.
So we had to do the ODBC as well as the Heterogeneous services setup on Win
NT. and then try to connect from databse on Unix machine to this Listener on
NT.

NO, you have to do it the otherway around with Heterogenous services. Namely
ODBC on the Unix platform.

Hi,

I am trying to connect to a Non Oracle database from the Oracle database (

i want to do some thing like this :
i have my ODBC set up on an Win NT machine. I have created a heterogeneous
connection set up on Win NT.
Now i want to connect from a Unix machine to the Listener entry that i have
done on the Win NT server, there by connecting to the Non Oracle database.

SqlServer ---odbc setup on NT> Win NT ( LIstener Entry: pubs)
> Unix (Tnsnames entry : pubs.world)

can this be done ??

If I understand well your question, I don't think that a 'result set'
(as, say, a collection of rowids or whatever) really is identified. If
you have a sort, then yes, you have a kind of 'result set' in temporary
segments. Otherwise all you need is the SCN at the beginning of the
query, and everything you need is either in regular blocks or 'undo'
blocks. Would you have ora-1555 otherwise ?

Things which may be considered are :

   - Providing on-site training. If you target a big enough company,
with enough people to train, you can probably get a machine and a
fully-licensed test or development database.
   - Providing MySQL or Postgres training ...

Re: Size of a Long Field

2003-02-05 Thread JApplewhite

Ed,

Perhaps you could use the DBMS_SQL Define_Column_Long and Column_Value_Long
procedures to manipulate the Long?

Converting the Long to a LOB using To_LOB function, then manipulating it
with the DBMS_LOB package might do, too.

How about calling the DBMS_SYSTEM.READ_EV procedure?
I think this is simpler than going to the UGA dumps..

THe restriction with DBMS_SYSTEM is, you can not get

can.

Did you ever consider that your (prospective) trainig candidates get the
(for testing purposes freely downloadable) oracle software themselves and
install it themselves (or assisted by you) on a good (linux - one might hope
;-)) box and then you assist them by getting along with this?

I think this means, that you would not provide the software yourself - this
is done by your traning candidates.

As I am neither a jurist nor a lawyer, so I hope this is not pure nonsense -
especially regarding the license agreement on technet.oracle.com.

What is the value for WAIT_TIME ? This may not be an IO problem
if 'WAIT_TIME' is not 0. A session is waiting only when 'WAIT_TIME' is 0. I
would suggest running some utility like tusc (HP), truss (Sun), strace (Linux)
and check it from the OS side. Since this is a third party tool, it could be
performing some CPU only operation which is not reflected in v$session_wait.

another possibility for running Oracle / UNIX at home

Title: another possibility for running Oracle / UNIX at home

A few days ago someone had asked about what options are available for running Oracle (database) on UNIX at home.
I just saw this article:

Re: Problem with LONG column

Create the new table, and then use the sqlplus 'copy' command,
as it can handle longs.

Re: Hanging query puzzle

2003-02-05 Thread Denny Koovakattu

What is the value for WAIT_TIME ? This may not be an IO problem
if 'WAIT_TIME' is not 0. A session is waiting only when 'WAIT_TIME' is 0. I
would suggest running some utility like tusc (HP), truss (Sun), strace (Linux)
and check it from the OS side. Since this is a third party tool, it could be
performing some CPU only operation which is not reflected in v$session_wait.

Denny

Re: Oracle License for Training

2003-02-05 Thread Markus Reger
Did you ever consider that your (prospective) trainig candidates get the (for testing
purposes freely downloadable) oracle software themselves and install it themselves (or
assisted by you) on a good (linux - one might hope ;-)) box and then you assist them
by getting along with this?

I think this means, that you would not provide the software yourself - this is done by
your traning candidates.

As I am neither a jurist nor a lawyer, so I hope this is not pure nonsense -
especially regarding the license agreement on technet.oracle.com.

Um, no.

For development they can't be beat; the only thing I miss out on is Metalink, but my clients usually provide a (legal) access path for that. OTN is fantastic for developers.

However, for training this statement is true. I ran into this in a big way when working for a smallish SW company. We developed a slick method of rolling out the product to a large-scale enterprise, partially using some proprietary Oracle objects (sequences, PL/SQL, etc). Oracle had no problem with this. The problem occurred, however, when we wanted to hold private classes to train our consultants and implementation partners on this method. We ended up having to buy licenses, and eventually moving the tool to a non-platform specific means.

Reliability would have to include Standby, Data Guard, RAC - pros/cons of all and when you might use one versus the other.  Also, go to the Freeman book as a start on new options and look through the new features and decide what could lead to more "reliable" systems.  I would say anything that makes admin./maint. easier - like undo segments (I AM HOPING)

Good luck.

Folks

We are looking to present a Talk on :-

"Reliability" with respect to Oracle 9i DB

How does one even approach this subject ?
What Sub-Topics would this envisage other than the following ?

1) Oracle Architecture of Data Storage
2) Backup & Recovery
Do Standby Databases & Database Replication come under the subject
"Reliability" ?

Using our Application Product we have Experience on Hybrid Oracle Databases
in :-

1) High End Database Performance Benchmarks
2) Regular Database Recoveries from Block Corruptions , Crashes
3) Keeping Production Databases of sizes upto 1 TB working optimally .

Do you believe we can give a Talk on the Subject "Reliability" ?

The presentation might have in attendance some of the Leading Oracle minds .

Thanks

RE: How to dump UGA ??

2003-02-05 Thread K Gopalakrishnan
Jonathan:

How about calling the DBMS_SYSTEM.READ_EV procedure?
I think this is simpler than going to the UGA dumps..

THe restriction with DBMS_SYSTEM is, you can not get
the event settings of the other sessions. But Dumps
can.

If you want to see if tracing is on:

alter session set events 'immediate trace name events level 1';

(level 2 for process level events, level 4 for system).

You can obviously use the oradebug equivalent, or
the dbms_support package to fire this at another
session.

However - if you can read the session's trace file
to find out the result of this command, then you will
be able to see from the content of the trace file that
it is (or isn't) tracing anyway.

Re: How to create a new oracle database from SVRMGRL??

2003-02-05 Thread Joan Hsieh
Majid,

1. Create ini.ora, link this ini.ora to your oracle_home/dbs
2. startup nomount pfile=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initestdb.ora

create database TESTDB
maxdatafiles 1021
maxinstances 1
maxlogfiles 8
maxlogmembers 4
character set WE8ISO8859P15
datafile
'/testdb/system01.dbf' size 400M
logfile
'/redo1/testdb/log01.dbf' size 20M,
'/redo1/testdb/log02.dbf' size 20M,
'/redo1/testdb/log03.dbf' size 20M;

3. run
@$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catalog.sql
@$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catproc.sql
4. Create rollback tablespace
5. Create your rollback segment
6. Create all your tablespaces
7. enjoy

Sony,

Don't you mean Database Configuration Assistant? Not only does it create
the database, but configures the listener as required and the registry.

Hi Majid,

1)how can I create a new database frm SVRMGRL ?
Use DATABASE MIGRATION ASSISTANT, it is more easy to use.

2)can I have more than one database running in
oracle8i?
Yes you can.

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys
I'm hoping there is sysadmin in the list that can help me.

We just received a brand new Itanium Server to play with
It has 2  U320 disk not striped or mirrored or anything

Doing test and monitoring them through glance, is giving me a transfer rate
of about 15Megs a sec
These should be up around 60 - 80 megs right?

My sysadmin says there is nothing he can do.
Can someone tell if there is some sort setting he hasn't set or a config
somewhere?

Thanks.
