RE: Update and Join
In my opinion, you can try this one. Make a view that joined ITEMLOC and ITEMMAST, and then, you can update that view. Automatically the field "PREFER_BIN" will be updated too. I still using SQL Server 2000, the syntax is like this. CREATE VIEW view_name as select ItemLoc.Prefer_bin,ItemMast.Item,ItemMast.Inven_Majcl from ItemLoc inner join ItemMast on ItemLoc.Item = ItemMast.Item And then try to execute this command: update view_name SET ITEMLOC.PREFER_BIN='PATEN-A' where Inven_Majcl = 'A' and ItemLoc.Prefer_Bin = 'FICTICI' Sinardy Xing [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Castro, Can you set yourfont size bigger? A word to the Wise or the Paranoid -- IO subsystems do not enjoy having their power cord knocked loose while the server's up and running, and Oracle likes it even less. An important lesson in splitting up control files between IO controllers/subsystems/power/etc. When we do get our SAN, I'm still keeping a control file local. Maybe a redolog set, too... Re: printing out of Pl/SQL
Hi SPOOL OUT will only write the SQL*plus output to the default printer on UNIX it is not implemented in SQL*plus for NT. You cannot do what you are trying to do below. UTL_FILE can only read and write clear text files. I am not an expert on windows internals but lpt1 is a device / port so should be some sort of device driver so i guess it has a different file type. UTL_FILE probably does a check internally to test if the file being opened is a text file. your best bet is to use C to write an external procedure to do it, or perhaps pipe the output from a text file to the printer externally. i.e use utl_file to write to a file and have a batch job that runs every few minutes and spools the file to the printer? hth kind regards Pete -- Pete Finnigan email:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Web site: http://www.petefinnigan.com - Oracle security audit specialists Book:Oracle security step-by-step Guide - see http://store.sans.org for details. -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.net -- Author: Pete Finnigan INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services-- 858-538-5051 http://www.fatcity.com San Diego, California-- Mailing list and web hosting services - To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from). RE: Connection Problem
Thanks folks (a useful gender-neutral word). Suggestions received were clean up old names files try pinging name and ip address use ip address in names file instead of a name trace. I have 4 Oracles on the machine so I renamed old names files. I then failed to ping by name, but was able to ping by ip address. So I changed the names file to use ip address instead of name. At this point one of those little ironies that makes computing such fun stepped in. Unbeknown to me the server went down so it seemed that the combined knowledge of this list had brought my Oracle system to its knees. However once service was restored all worked. S.J.C. RE: printing out of Pl/SQL
Hi I came across similar situation few months ago. You could do following in NT environment. 1. Have the UTL_FILE write to a file in directory called 'printdir' (you can name it whatever you like) 2. Write a NT Shell script to check for any file in 'printdir'. if there is one, use 'print filename ' or 'copy xx lpt1:' or any other networked printer. 3. Once file printing is complete, have the file moved to another directory or delete it from 'printdir' 4. schedule a periodic job scheduler to execute NT shell script. There are some permission requirements to for the scheduler to execute NT shell script. First test printing of file from the 'printdir' in command shell and then incorporate same into shell script. If you prefer, you could use shell command to schedule periodic execution of shell script instead of job scheduler. RE: What are the restrictions in naming an Oracle SID/Database?
Ashoke The problem with long SID names or special characters is that the SID is used in a lot of circumstances. For example, on Unix systems, you end up with other characters being concatenated with the SID and this becomes a process name (as in lgwr_ora_$ORACLE_SID). So the issue isn't entirely within Oracle's control. The recommendation has traditionally been to keep it to 4 or 5 characters, strictly alphanumeric. The danger is that you will get the instance created just fine and then somewhere later encounter a situation where your special SID exceeds something else's limits. Hitting issues like this is why the more experienced DBAs tend also to be fairly conservative. Usually you have to solve enough problems without creating your own. RE: RMAN Recovery Question: Restore with loss of control files an
Timothy I will tell you what I've figured out. Perhaps someone else can provide additional information. 1. Some people have reported success in extracting the control file from the RMAN backup. I got stuck on the issue that RMAN wouldn't function unless the target instance was up with STARTUP MOUNT, but I couldn't mount the database until I had a control file to mount. I finally gave up and took the expedient of doing a separate SQL BACKUP CONTROLFILE statement, using the RMAN backup directory. To perform a disaster recovery, I just move my copy of the control file into position first. 2. I have not been able to convince RMAN to use a different backup location. Fortunately with Unix it is easy to create a link that looks like the original location. Dennis Williams DBA, 80%OCP, 100% DBA Lifetouch, Inc. My guess is that some of those books are just a fuel reserve, when the weather gets really cold. Given the oil and gas prices today, it does make sense, you know. RE: Why didn't datafile autoextend?
Looks like the size of your datafile is already higher than your MAXBYTES. In additional to setting AUTOEXTEND ON, you should also give it a sufficient MAXSIZE for the datafile. Oracle will autoextend the datafile only up to the max size specified for the datafile. In your case, the max size for your datafile is a little less than 2 megs, which means that once your datafile is at 2 megs, Oracle will never AUTOextend it beyond the 2 meg size, although it can be extended beyond 2 meg by hand, as you have done. ...Rudy -Original Message- Sent: Monday, June 30, 2003 12:50 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L This morning I started getting ORA-1654: unable to extend index CIMXDBIN.CIMX_SESSION_STATE_PK by 128 in tablespace CAPP_IDX in my alert log (8.1.7 on Windows 2000). RE: Why didn't datafile autoextend?
Jeff, There are three main reasons why a data file will not autoextend: 1) Maxbytes bytes. If you use the OEM GUI do remember that it defaults to KB. That dog has bitten me more than once. 2) The file system is = 100% full. You can't autoextend nto something that the OS won't give you. 3) The increment_by would cause the datafile to autoextend beyond maxbytes. Pass the salve if you please!! I just got bit again. Title: Message Interestingly, IBM doesn't seem to come with any decent man pages. It's not just your SA's this time! I installed every single man page package from all 5 of the 5L CD's and can get man pages for most system commands, nothing C-programming related, etc. It's random enough that I type "man foo" and then google for "foo aix" to find the answer. IBM has always been "different" about including online documentation. When I started with AIXen (back in the 3.1 days) they included the InfoExplorer CD-ROM which required specific software to view it. You couldn't just insert it into any old CD-ROM drive on another system and read it. That's fine if you have dozens of AIXen around. At the time, I had a single IBM server that hosted all the department's XTerms. When it went down, there was no paper documentation -- it was all on that confounded CD-ROM that we coudn't read on a PC or Sun workstation! :( At least now they're HTMLifying it all, but they still insist on being "different" and not including nroff man pages. *sigh* I think that's my BIGGEST complaint about AIX ("Ain't Unix")... --Rich Holland [EMAIL PROTECTED] SAP Technical Consultantprint unpack("u","92G5S\=\"!A;F]T:5R(\'!EFP\@:%C:V5R\"[EMAIL PROTECTED]"); -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of April WellsSent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 5:20 PMTo: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-LSubject: RE: Those installing Oracle 9i on AIX 5.2L We don't GET access to man pages here... they take up too much space... so does the C compiler. RE: What are the restrictions in naming an Oracle SID/Database?
Actually folks, we've promogulated this idea that a SID and a database name have to be the same. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In a recent attempt to make a new copy of our PeopleSoft database from a BCV copy I found that you can have a different name for the database from the SID. And wouldn't you believe it, the 9i DBCA supports that idea?? Therefore you could have a SID on empprod and a name of emp_prod with no trouble. Actually I found a good reason to go back to my old methods of using numbers as SIDs. Why, the JDBC driver. SIDs should be NON case sensitive as they once were in SQL*Net V1. A database running on a single RAID 1 device on a 2 CPU Dell with ext3 on linux is still faster than a database running on a similarly configured Dell box with windows 2000, and several RAID 10 devices. Linux file systems usually do not support direct I/O (bypassing the buffer cache), which means that you're going to have double caching with almost everything except raw devices. You can have up to 256 raw devices on a Linux box and if your database is small enough (32-bit system, 2G limit applies), that will definitely be the fastest option. My recommendation is to go with IBM JFS because it is a battle tested, mature, well performing file system. I would advise against XFS because nobody uses it. As for availability, you'll have to go with some RAID controller and standby database or RAC. In case of RAC, your choice of file systems is clear (OCFS). Re: What are the restrictions in naming an Oracle SID/Database?
DB_NAME specifies a database identifier of up to 8 characters. The following characters are valid in a database name: alphanumeric characters, underscore (_), number sign (#), and dollar sign ($). No other characters are valid. Oracle removes double quotation marks before processing the database name. Therefore you cannot use double quotation marks to embed other characters in the name. The database name is case insensitive. In fact cannot use non-ASCII characters in a database name and in the create database statement. For example cannot use special characters from european \ asian character sets like characters with umlauts. - Original Message - To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 30, 2003 21:19 : What are the restriction in naming an Oracle SID/Database? : : 1.
