RE: Dedicated Server problem ORA-03113

2003-06-30 Thread Denham Eva
That is the whole problem, there is no logged errors, or trace files.
Everyone can connect via the MTS servers, no problem, however no one can
connect via dedicated server. Go figure.

Hi!

What does your alert log say? Or event log then?
Maybe, for some reason, Oracle is unable to start new processes on your
system. For MTS connection, no new processes are needed, but for dedicated,
there are.

 Hello Gurus,

 I am at wits end. The enviroment is Windows 2000 SP3. Oracle 817, MTS is
 also set up.
 The server has been up for 32 days. Everything fine and then suddenly all
 the power users using dedicated server because of their resource
intensive
 sql etc just cann't connect.
 We get this error:

 ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

 I have tried reloading, stopping and starting the Listener, but to no
avail.
 There are only two dedicated sessions connected to the server and it still
 refuses any connections, and I have seen up to nine dedicated server
 connections before.

 Anyone experience this before?

ok, I have tried this sample in the way :

-
create or replace procedure PrintTest(I_ROWS IN number)
is
i_CountedRows   number(6);
fHandle UTL_FILE.FILE_TYPE;
begin
fHandle:=UTL_FILE.FOPEN('c:\','lpt1','w',255);
i_CountedRows:=0;
While i_CountedRows = I_ROWS LOOP
UTL_FILE.Put_Line(fHandle,to_char(i_CountedRows));
i_CountedRows:=i_CountedRows+1;
END LOOP;
UTL_FILE.fClose(fHandle);
END;
-

The only thing that is done : creating a file lpt1 in c:\ and store it.
I have tried several combinations like

  fHandle:=UTL_FILE.FOPEN('c:\','lpt1','w',255)
  fHandle:=UTL_FILE.FOPEN('lpt1:','','w',255)

etc

Nothing :-(

I am on NT4 / Oracle 8.0.6

RE: Update and Join

2003-06-30 Thread TIm Tim

In my opinion, you can try this one. Make a view that joined ITEMLOC and ITEMMAST, and then, you can update that view. Automatically the field "PREFER_BIN" will be updated too.

I still using SQL Server 2000, the syntax is like this.

CREATE VIEW view_name as

select ItemLoc.Prefer_bin,ItemMast.Item,ItemMast.Inven_Majcl from ItemLoc inner join ItemMast on ItemLoc.Item = ItemMast.Item

And then try to execute this command:

update view_name SET ITEMLOC.PREFER_BIN='PATEN-A'
where Inven_Majcl = 'A' and ItemLoc.Prefer_Bin = 'FICTICI'

A word to the Wise or the Paranoid -- IO subsystems do not enjoy having
their power cord knocked loose while the server's up and running, and Oracle
likes it even less. An important lesson in splitting up control files
between IO controllers/subsystems/power/etc.

When we do get our SAN, I'm still keeping a control file local. Maybe a
redolog set, too...

RE: Dedicated Server problem ORA-03113

2003-06-30 Thread Kirtikumar Deshpande
ORA-3113 error is not very easy to track down. It's like ORA-600, but relates to
issues in N/W
communication with Oracle datbases. There are a number of notes/articles on Metalink
discussing
this error. Hopefully some of that information helps you.

 Everyone can connect via the MTS servers, no problem, however no one can

Re: printing out of Pl/SQL

2003-06-30 Thread Pete Finnigan
Hi

SPOOL OUT will only write the SQL*plus output to the default printer on
UNIX it is not implemented in SQL*plus for NT.

You cannot do what you are trying to do below. UTL_FILE can only read
and write clear text files. I am not an expert on windows internals but
lpt1 is a device / port so should be some sort of device driver so i
guess it has a different file type. UTL_FILE probably does a check
internally to test if the file being opened is a text file. your best
bet is to use C to write an external procedure to do it, or perhaps pipe
the output from a text file to the printer externally. i.e use utl_file
to write to a file and have a batch job that runs every few minutes and
spools the file to the printer?

hth

kind regards

RE: Connection Problem

2003-06-30 Thread FOX, Simon
Thanks folks (a useful gender-neutral word).

Suggestions received were
clean up old names files
try pinging name and ip address
use ip address in names file instead of a name
trace.

I have 4 Oracles on the machine so I renamed old names files.

I then failed to ping by name, but was able to ping by ip address.

So I changed the names file to use ip address instead of name.

At this point one of those little ironies that makes computing such fun
stepped in. Unbeknown to me the server went down so it seemed that the
combined knowledge of this list had brought my Oracle system to its knees.

However once service was restored all worked.

A name resolution problem? Symptoms for the site with problems are
consistent with not getting consistently consistent service from your name
server. Look are your tnsnames.ora and see if it has the name of host
there. If so, try putting in the IP address instead.

Re: Oracle Verison Information

2003-06-30 Thread Pete Finnigan
Hi

The O'Reilly book Oracle scripts has a shell script products.sh that
does this, although it uses the file unix.rgs instead although for 9iR1
which i can check now this file only contains the line

rdbms 9.0.0.0.0 Beta

so i guess the install log in $ORACLE_BASE/oraInventory/logs/installActi
ons.log might be the best source to use. on 9iR1 it contains a section
listing the current inventory, this should include patches but how
reliably updated it is I am not sure!:

snip
Current Inventory:
Independent Products:
Java Runtime Environment 1.1.8.12.0
Oracle Universal Installer 2.0.1.4.0
Oracle Home: /export/home/u01/app/oracle/product/9.0.1
LDAP Required Support Files 9.0.1.0.0
Database SQL Scripts 9.0.1.0.0
Precompiler Required Support Files 9.0.1.0.0
RDBMS Required Support Files 9.0.1.0.0
...
/snip

There should also be a file $ORACLE_BASE/oraInventory/Contents/PatchesLi
st0.ser that looks like it might contain patch info?, it is binary so
you could investigate this file also with the strings command.

Try turning on SQL Net tracing to discover the problem. Turn on tracing on
the client PC by adding the appropriate trace parameters to the sqlnet.ora
file.
This will produce a trace file upon your next connection attempt and you
will be able to (hopefully) see what is causing the problem. It is hard
for anyone to diagnose a connectivity problem without more information like
which version of Oracle, is a Names Server being used?, does the target
server's IP address exist in the PC's local host file?, etc.

RMAN Recovery Question: Restore with loss of control files and no catalo database

2003-06-30 Thread Clarkson, Timothy T SEOP-OEIRH/1
Title: RMAN Recovery Question: Restore with loss of control files and no catalo database

Hi there everyone,

I have read the documentation and I am missing something, I am stuck on two points:

(1) How do I recover from a RMAN backup to disk if I have lost all the original database files (control files, data files and redo logs)

(2) How do I change the location for RMAN to check for the backup up file i.e. Backup file was on E: but now in F:, when I enter restore it only checks the original location.

Specifications:

Oracle  8.1.7.4.10

Windows 2000 SP4

I know that in the backup part I can use the FORMAT string to specify the filename and location.

ORA-3113 error is not very easy to track down. It's like ORA-600, but
relates to issues in N/W
communication with Oracle datbases. There are a number of notes/articles on
Metalink discussing
this error. Hopefully some of that information helps you.

 Hi!

 What does your alert log say? Or event log then?
 Maybe, for some reason, Oracle is unable to start new processes on your
 system. For MTS connection, no new processes are needed, but for
dedicated,
 there are.

RE: printing out of Pl/SQL

2003-06-30 Thread Baswannappa, Shiva
Hi

I came across similar situation few months ago. You could do following in NT
environment.

1. Have the UTL_FILE write to a file in directory called 'printdir' (you can
name it whatever you like)
2. Write a NT Shell script to check for any file in 'printdir'. if there is
one, use 'print filename ' or 'copy xx lpt1:' or any other networked
printer.
3. Once file printing is complete, have the file moved to another directory
or delete it from 'printdir'
4. schedule a periodic job scheduler to execute NT shell script.

There are some permission requirements to for the scheduler to execute NT
shell script.

First test printing of file from the 'printdir' in command shell and then
incorporate same into shell script.

If you prefer, you could use shell command to schedule periodic execution of
shell script instead of job scheduler.

RE: What are the restrictions in naming an Oracle SID/Database?

2003-06-30 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Ashoke
   The problem with long SID names or special characters is that the SID is
used in a lot of circumstances. For example, on Unix systems, you end up
with other characters being concatenated with the SID and this becomes a
process name (as in lgwr_ora_$ORACLE_SID). So the issue isn't entirely
within Oracle's control. The recommendation has traditionally been to keep
it to 4 or 5 characters, strictly alphanumeric. The danger is that you will
get the instance created just fine and then somewhere later encounter a
situation where your special SID exceeds something else's limits. Hitting
issues like this is why the more experienced DBAs tend also to be fairly
conservative. Usually you have to solve enough problems without creating
your own.

RE: RMAN Recovery Question: Restore with loss of control files an

2003-06-30 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Timothy
  I will tell you what I've figured out. Perhaps someone else can
provide additional information.

1. Some people have reported success in extracting the control file from the
RMAN backup. I got stuck on the issue that RMAN wouldn't function unless the
target instance was up with STARTUP MOUNT, but I couldn't mount the database
until I had a control file to mount. I finally gave up and took the
expedient of doing a separate SQL BACKUP CONTROLFILE statement, using the
RMAN backup directory. To perform a disaster recovery, I just move my copy
of the control file into position first.

2. I have not been able to convince RMAN to use a different backup location.
Fortunately with Unix it is easy to create a link that looks like the
original location.

RE: Online tech books

2003-06-30 Thread Gogala, Mladen
My guess is that some of those books are just a fuel reserve,
when the weather gets really cold. Given the oil and gas prices
today, it does make sense, you know. Bears accumulate fat for
winter, while DBAs accumulate books. On the other hands, our cycle
is not related to the weather but rather to the versions of oracle.
You'll see chimneys start spewing some smoke when Oracle 10(i?)
comes out.

What are the restriction in naming an Oracle SID/Database?

1. Can I have special character in SID/Database name? e.g. Is a SID name 'emp_prod'
is allowed?

No You can not use spl char's. SID name should be in alpha's.

2. What is the maximum size of a SID/Database name in Unix?

8 chars

3. What is the maximum size of a SID/Database name in Windows?

8chars

4. Is there any other restrictions?

SID names should be unique.

RE: Why didn't datafile autoextend?

2003-06-30 Thread Rudy Zung
Looks like the size of your datafile is already higher than your
MAXBYTES.

In additional to setting AUTOEXTEND ON, you should also give
it a sufficient MAXSIZE for the datafile. Oracle will autoextend
the datafile only up to the max size specified for the datafile.
In your case, the max size for your datafile is a little less
than 2 megs, which means that once your datafile is at 2 megs,
Oracle will never AUTOextend it beyond the 2 meg size, although
it can be extended beyond 2 meg by hand, as you have done.

BTW, the rumours are true, I have agreed to star in
the BAARF Musical. Yes, it is time I pursued my other
career interests. It is kind of apt I think, given
that I wrote a paper about the specific application
of RAID 3 in a data warehouse environment, almost 3
years ago. It is only natural for us in the technical
community to pretty much negate everything we say, and
contradict ourselves once in 3 years...;-)

 If not, try setting

 Also, during the execution, you can watch

Looks like the size of your datafile is already higher than your
MAXBYTES.

In additional to setting AUTOEXTEND ON, you should also give
it a sufficient MAXSIZE for the datafile. Oracle will autoextend
the datafile only up to the max size specified for the datafile.
In your case, the max size for your datafile is a little less
than 2 megs, which means that once your datafile is at 2 megs,
Oracle will never AUTOextend it beyond the 2 meg size, although
it can be extended beyond 2 meg by hand, as you have done.

RE: Why didn't datafile autoextend?

2003-06-30 Thread Goulet, Dick
Jeff,

There are three main reasons why a data file will not autoextend:

1) Maxbytes bytes. If you use the OEM GUI do remember that it defaults to
KB. That dog has bitten me more than once.

2) The file system is = 100% full. You can't autoextend nto something that
the OS won't give you.

3) The increment_by would cause the datafile to autoextend beyond maxbytes.
Pass the salve if you please!! I just got bit again.

8 chars

3. What is the maximum size of a SID/Database name in Windows?

If you install ML 04 it'll include these automagically for you. I think

Interestingly, IBM doesn't seem to come with any decent man pages.
It's not just your SA's this time!

I
installed every single man page package from all 5 of the 5L CD's and can get
man pages for most system commands, nothing C-programming related, etc.
It's random enough that I type "man foo" and then google for "foo aix" to find
the answer. IBM has always been "different" about including online
documentation. When I started with AIXen (back in the 3.1 days) they
included the InfoExplorer CD-ROM which required specific software to view
it. You couldn't just insert it into any old CD-ROM drive on another
system and read it. That's fine if you have dozens of AIXen around.
At the time, I had a single IBM server that hosted all the department's
XTerms. When it went down, there was no paper documentation -- it was all
on that confounded CD-ROM that we coudn't read on a PC or Sun workstation!
:(

At
least now they're HTMLifying it all, but they still insist on being "different"
and not including nroff man pages. *sigh* I think that's my BIGGEST
complaint about AIX ("Ain't Unix")...

  I have two Oracle installations on the same host.
  Between installs I updated /etc/oraInst.loc and
  /var/opt/oracle/oraInst.loc accordingly so that I have
  two inventory directoies, one per installation.
  My question is that /etc/oratab has a facility for
  multiple installations via
  'SID:$ORACLE_HOME path:N' entries, but the oraInst.loc appears to be for a single installation.
  Now in order to apply patches and such, I have to
  modify /etc/oraInst.loc every time (it appears Opatch
  is ignoring the /var/opt/oracle version).
  Has anyone found an easy way to use multiple oraInst.loc files
  or to use a single oraInst.loc file for multiple
  inventories? I'm strongly considering hiding
  opatch and replacing it with a wrapper script that rewrites the oraInst.loc files prior to calling the 'real'
  opatch executable, but thought I'd see if there's an
  easier way first. :-)

No You can not use spl char's. SID name should be in alpha's.

RE: What are the restrictions in naming an Oracle SID/Database?

2003-06-30 Thread Goulet, Dick
Actually folks, we've promogulated this idea that a SID and a database name have to be
the same. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In a recent attempt to make a new
copy of our PeopleSoft database from a BCV copy I found that you can have a different
name for the database from the SID. And wouldn't you believe it, the 9i DBCA supports
that idea?? Therefore you could have a SID on empprod and a name of emp_prod with no
trouble. Actually I found a good reason to go back to my old methods of using numbers
as SIDs. Why, the JDBC driver. SIDs should be NON case sensitive as they once were in
SQL*Net V1.

Linux file systems usually do not support direct I/O (bypassing the buffer
cache), which means that you're going to have double caching with almost
everything except raw devices. You can have up to 256 raw devices on a
Linux
box and if your database is small enough (32-bit system, 2G limit
applies),
that will definitely be the fastest option. My recommendation is to go
with
IBM JFS because it is a battle tested, mature, well performing file
system. I
would advise against XFS because nobody uses it.
As for availability, you'll have to go with some RAID controller and
standby
database or RAC. In case of RAC, your choice of file systems is clear
(OCFS).
Whatever you do, do not configure your RAID as RAID-5 but RAID 1+0 (BARF).

Could anyone please explain the significance and working of
OSAUTH_PREFIX_DOMAIN. I read the following but was unable to
understand it :

 There may be multiple frank usernames on your network, including
local user frank, domain user frank on sales, and possibly several
domain users frank on other domains. Entering true enables the server
to differentiate among them. Entering false causes the domain to be
ignored and local user frank to become the default value of the
operating system user returned to the server.

The security and network integration guide for windows also says this
about setting registry parameter osauth_prefix_domain :
Do this step only if you are not authenticating a domain name with a
user (for example, just frank instead of frank on domain sales).

Could someone please explain the above quoted docs.

RE: Oracle unlimited concurrent license

   Concurrent licenses were offered years ago. I have not heard of an
unlimited concurrent, but it may well be that Oracle Sales sold them one.
The key would be finding the sales agreement they and Oracle signed and
seeing what it says.

1. Can I have special character in SID/Database name? e.g. Is a SID name 'emp_prod'
is allowed?

No You can not use spl char's. SID name should be in alpha's.

2. What is the maximum size of a SID/Database name in Unix?

Hi Timothy , I am guessing about the following answers, and I work on
9.2.0.1.0 but anyway here goes :

(1) How do I recover from a RMAN backup to disk if I have lost all the
original database files (control files, data files and redo logs)

In nomount
First run SET DBID
SET UNTIL SEQUENCE number THREAD 1;
Then RESTORE CONTROLFILE ... FROM 'media_handle' or TAG;
mount database;
restore database;
recover database ;
open resetlogs database;

Don't know the answer to the second question, let me know if you find
out
.

Re: What are the restrictions in naming an Oracle SID/Database?

2003-06-30 Thread bulbultyagi
DB_NAME specifies a database identifier of up to 8 characters.
The following characters are valid in a database name: alphanumeric
characters,
underscore (_), number sign (#), and dollar sign ($). No other
characters are valid.
Oracle removes double quotation marks before processing the database
name.
Therefore you cannot use double quotation marks to embed other
characters in the
name. The database name is case insensitive. In fact cannot use
non-ASCII characters in a database name and in the create database
statement. For example cannot use special characters from european \
asian character sets like characters with umlauts.

Yes, we have that type of license.

Oracle doesn't sell this license anymore, but they did at one time.

I can install Oracle on any platform I want, as many servers as I want.

453 users for EE and 400+ for Std Edition.

Best look at your contract though to be sure.

Re: OEM 9i - saving/copying reports between repositories

2003-06-30 Thread Kaing, Leng
I've looked under oem_webstage and other directories but can't seem to find the files.
oem_webstage has the index.html that shows the RESULTANT HTML of executing the report,
but not the actual code to generate the report.

Have since logged a call to Oracle Support. Hope they come up with an answer rather
than just the usual not possible. Seems like I always get this reply with any

the files are stored in oem_webstage directory
you will have to copy these files to the other location and give the path.
As you must be knowing the oem reporting server should have the management server

when you remove default reporting from the console it doesnt remove from the operating

You can disable that report so that it doesnt show up on the webpage.

Or if we look at the problem in another way - OEM itself comes with a number of

Re: Perl for Oracle DBAs - dbup.pl

2003-06-30 Thread Jared Still

FYI, if any of you are using the dbup.pl script
from the PDBA toolkit:

The solution to Dwayne's problem was to change
the following line in dbup.conf from this:

   %onCallList = ( 'default' = 'corpdba' );

to this:

   %onCallList = (
 '20030101' = 'corpdba',
 'default' = 'corpdba'
   );

Seems the programmer didn't take into account that
the 'default' might be the only value in the onCallList
hash.

I've already given him (the programmer) a stern reprimand.

 Please show it in context. ie. with surrounding lines as well.

 Subject:Perl for Oracle DBAs - dbup.pl

 Hi,

 I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

 I have been wrestling with this for a couple days now and I regreewt
 having to toss in the towel but I need help.

 I am trying to setup dbup.pl from the Perl for Oracle DBAs book (highly
 recommended, I must say). As long as the databases are running,
 everything looks good (the log files show everything is ok). I get an
 error from the script whenever I take a database down as opposed to an
 email or pager.

 Here is the section of the file that seems to be causing my woes (if
 necessary, I could send the rest):

 %addresses = (
  'dbamgr' = { pager = '',
emailWork = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]',
emailHome = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' },

  'opsmgr' = { pager = '',
emailWork = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]',
emailHome = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' },

  'corpdba' = { pager = '',
   emailWork = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]',
   emailHome = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' },
 );

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] = ('opsmgr','dbamgr');

 %onCallList = ( 'default' = 'corpdba' );

 Here is the error:

 $ Use of uninitialized value in hash element at /usr/bin/dbup.pl line
 597 (#1)
 (W uninitialized) An undefined value was used as if it were already
 defined. It was interpreted as a or a 0, but maybe it was a mistake.
 To suppress this warning assign a defined value to your variables.

 To help you figure out what was undefined, perl tells you what operation
 you used the undefined value in. Note, however, that perl optimizes
 your program and the operation displayed in the warning may not
 necessarily appear literally in your program. For example, that $foo
 is usually optimized into that . $foo, and the warning will refer to
 the concatenation (.) operator, even though there is no . in your
 program.

 connect descriptor is more like it, since you may load balance the
 listener. what is the different any way with destination address? is this
 an exam question or what?

 Hello list
 does a service name best represent a connect descriptor or a
 destination address ?

  You can dump the stuff in to AQ and then have shell script to dequeue it

 and

  print it .

   The question was, how to do it from PL/SQL.
   I think, the only way is using external stored procedure.
