Oracle client compatibility with Windows XP

2001-11-30 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

According to Metalink note 161546.1 you need at least the 9.0.1
Oracle client for Windows XP. We are currently using the 8.1.7
client to go against 8.1.7 databases and 7.3.4 databases. Does
anyone know of any issues when you use the 9 client against
7.3.4 databases?

Thanks,

Ben

Oracle9iAS and proxy servers

2002-01-08 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

I have used Oracle8i but I am new to the Oracle9iAS world.

I would like to set up a proxy server outside a firewall
which routes to an Oracle9iAS server inside the firewall.
Can the proxy server just be a basic Apache install, or are
their benefits/requirements to using 9iAS (maybe the core
or minimal edition) as the proxy?

Can anyone point me at some documentation on this topic, as
nothing came up on my MetaLink search except numerous references
to the "Proxy log on failed" problem.

Thanks,

Ben

Oracle and LDAP servers

2002-01-09 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

In reading MetaLink I have come up with the following list of LDAP
servers that are certified for use with Oracle.

in 8.1.7 - OID, NDS, Active Directories and iPlanet

in 9i - OID, Active Directories

Can anyone update this?

When they say an LDAP is certified for use with Oracle does this
mean that the Oracle Internet Directory C API and PL/SQL API(dbms_ldap)
will work against them? Or does it just mean that the OID can sync to it.

My real question is if I want to use iPlanet or some such beast how do I
identify,
and authorize Oracle database users?

Thanks,

Ben

RE: Oracle8i and LDAP

2002-01-15 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

Well I have partially answered my own question. I see in the Net8 manual
that it can use an LDAP server to replace Oracle Names and lookup connect
strings for service names. However I am still not sure if Oracle8i can
authenticate a username and password in an LDAP. If it can, does anyone know
how it queries the LDAP.

What I really want to know is whether Oracle has any specific requirements
that an LDAP server would need to be able to handle. This will help us
choose an Oracle compatible
LDAP.

I have found a chart indicating that OID is included with Oracle9iAS EE.

Oracle8i and the Jserv demos

2002-01-17 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

I have installed Oracle 8.1.7.0 on an AIX 4.3 box and the Jserv
demos do not work. I looked at the jserv.log and it seems to
not be finding the java executables. I downloaded Java.rte for AIX
from IBM and put it in the $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/jdk/bin directory
but it still doesn't work. I am not too familiar with AIX so can
anyone explain to me how and where to install java on an AIX box.
I would open a tar but we renewed our licenses and ever since I have
been unable to get registered properly with MetaLink.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi

The
history for this question is incomplete but I will add this thought
anyway.

When
installing on AIX boxes Oracle will not install java due to license
restrictions.
I am
not sure if your error is during installation or after. The HTTP server may not
work
because there was no jre or jdk in $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/. I had to

Hope
this helps.

RE: How to use Email server in 9iAS.

2002-04-04 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

What couldn't you download from OTN and why. OTN has the following
manuals which I downloaded - Planning Guide, Installation Guide,
Administration Guide and Developers Guide.
I toyed with the idea of setting up the Email Server for mass
mailings (not spam!) with personalized text from an Oracle
database. However I have not had a chance to pursue it yet and
it does not seem to be very widely used. Right now I am just
using SendMail and utl_smtp to solve my problem.

RE: Differences between Oracle JDBC thin and thick drivers

2002-04-09 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

I believe the difference is that the OCI drivers use SQL*Net
or NET8 or whatever they call it now, whereas the thin driver
does not require SQL*Net on the client machine.

Hello all,

I have a question concerning the Oracle JDBC thin vs. thick drivers
and how they might affect operations from an application perspective.

We're in a Solais 8/Oracle 8.1.7.2 environment. We have several
applications on several servers connecting to the Oracle database.

For redundancy, we're looking into setting up TAF (transparent
application failover). Currently, some of our apps use the Oracle
JDBC thin drivers to talk to the database, with a connection
string that like this:

jdbc:oracle:thin:@host:port:ORACLE_SID

In a disaster recovery mode, where we would switch the database
from one server to another, the host name in the above string
would become invalid. That means we have to shut down our application
servers and restart them with an updated string.

Using the Oracle OCI (thick) driver though, allows us to connect
to a Net8 service instead of a specific server:

jdbc:oracle:oci8:@NET8_SERVICE_NAME

Coupled with the FAILOVER=ON option configured in Net8, it is
then possible to direct a connection from the first server to
the failover database on another server. This is exactly what
we would like to do.

My question is, from an application perspective, how is the Oracle
thick driver different from the thin driver? If everything
else is "equal" (i.e. the thick driver is compatible with the
app servers) would there be something within the the thick/OCI
driver that could limit functionality vs. the thin driver?

My understand, which obviously is sketchy, is that the thick
driver is a superset of the thin driver. If this is the case,
and for example if all database connections were handled through
a configuration file with the above OCI connection string, then
theoretically the thick driver should work.

If anyone has any info on this that they can share, it would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lou Avrami

Installing Discoverer4i with Oracle9iAS

2002-04-10 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I am having trouble with this install. First a warning. If you are
installing this on Solaris get the 9iAS 1.0.2.2.2 version as the
1.0.2.2.1 version would not even start up the Discoverer install
for me (and I did have PsuedoColor set on my emulator as it uses
the old installer in motif mode).

Anyway the Disco install says it worked but I cannot get it going.
My locator.log is complaining about being unable to bind a preference
object. I noticed one error in the pref.txt file - the IP address did
not get set. After looking on Metalink it seems that the install makes
a lot of mistakes in setting up parameter files. Has anyone successfully
installed this who would like to share their pref.txt, jserv.properties,
discoviewer.properties, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Close instances while installing new versions or creating new databases

2002-04-16 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

The install guides that I have seen specify that you shut down all
instances before any installations.

Is it really necessary to close all instances and listeners on a server
when you are:

a)Installing a new version of Oracle in a new $ORACLE_HOME

OR

b)Creating a new database under the new $ORACLE_HOME

What about when creating a new database under an existing
$ORACLE_HOME which has open instances.

Thanks.

Hello Folks,

I was teaching DBA stuff to a newbie, and I had him play with an Oracle
7.3.4 instance on an old HP box. I was teaching him about oradebug, ipcs
and how to associate shared memory segments with an Oracle Instance. After
some time, he came back and said there were 2 Oracle instances with the
same name running.

I did a ps -ef|grep pmon and was indeed surprised to find two process with
the same SID running. An ipcs showed two Oracle Id's. I connected to the
instance, and shut it down. It now showed only one pmon process, which I
was not able to connect to, and had to kill all the background process. He
does not remember the exact sequence of steps that he did. I tried to
retrace the steps from whatever he said, but to no avail. I brought up the
instance, did an ipcsrm, and tried to bring up another instance, all to
nothing. 7.3.4 is the only Oracle version installed on this box. Any
thoughts on this? I am curious to know.

I have been trying, like you wouldn't believe, to get a list of
new features in 9iR2. I have run into stone wall after stone wall.
I think there has been some internal confusion and debate over what
to include in 9iR2, based on some of what I've heard. I've even
heard that Logical Stand-by will not be in 9iR2, but I can not
verify this.

Looking hard, will report if I find anything.

The big thing that I'm looking forward to is the logical standby database.
This will allow you to apply logs between different versions of Oracle.
Should allow us to drastically reduce downtime during upgrades.

You can sure that Oid will be better - because lets
face it - it couldn't have got any worse :-)

SSL and non-SSL requests on same Apache server in 9iAS?

2002-03-04 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I want to host SSL and non-SSL requests on one physical server
running one 9iAS.

After installing 9iAS the httpd.conf file specifies by default
that it is listening on port . Later on in httpd.conf it
has an SSL directive that says it's listening on port 80 and 443.
Does this mean that this one Apache server can service non-SSL
requests on and SSL requests on 443 at the same time?

There is a document on Metalink(135231.1) that describes how to run two
Apache servers in one 9iAS home. Again what is not clear to me
is whether or not one could be handling SSL and the other non-SSL.

Anyone have any recommendations on how to do this? I may also be asked
to host 40-bit and 128-bit encryption on the same web site. Again any
recommendations?

Thanks.

Hundreds of schemas in one instance?

2002-03-06 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

Our university wants to set up a server that will provide groups
on campus with a standard set of services for web hosting, data
collection or whatever they want to do. As much as possible each
user should have their own isolated chunk of the server.
An Oracle database will sit in the background to provide whatever
database services they need. My thought is to go with one instance
with a unique schema, including separate tablespaces/datafiles, for each
user.

Some of the pros for this are:
- easy set up for new users
- easy software upgrades
- simplified tuning, backups, monitoring, auditing
- user isolation, especially disk space usage
- multiple instances would use far more memory

Some cons are:
- everyone must use the same release of the software
- database down time affects everyone
- might run into system maximums, for example max. number of datafiles
- an enormous SYSTEM tablespace

Has anyone had to this kind of thing? Any comments or suggestions?

TIA,

Ben

RE: Hundreds of schemas in one instance?

2002-03-07 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

The assumption is that every user of this system will have totally unique
requirements. There will be no data sharing and no commonality of purpose.
As far as alternatives I am not even thinking about multiple instances.
Other alternatives include - many schemas and one tablespace, or many
schemas and an arbitrary number of tablespaces, or an arbitrary number
of schemas matched to an arbitrary number of tablespaces, or one schema
for all users using fine grained access control (thanks for the idea
Jack it sounds quite useful).

Peter: All users would be equal and no critical systems will be housed
on this instance, but backup and recovery is definitely complicated by
having so many data files and tablespaces. By the "opposite direction"
do you mean only one tablespace.

Jared: The benefit is isolation. As much as possible keep the users from
affecting each other. Performance effects are unavoidable but separate
tablespaces would keep one user from gobbling up all the available
disk space. Will definitely have to watch out for the data dictionary
filling up the SYSTEM tablespace and bringing everything to a screeching
halt.

skipping the java.sh step in database create

Hi,

If you are not using anything to do with Java is it then
safe to skip running the java.sh script that dbassist
creates during database creation in Oracle 8.1.7?
This step takes forever and uses a lot of System tablespace.

final word on 8.1.7 install and java?

2001-02-16 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I did not really see a comprehensive answer on the
java questions involving 8.1.7 installs. I installed
8.1.7 on AIX 4.3.2 and the 1.1.8 jre was installed.
The install asked for a location for the JDK.
I just created an empty /opt/java directory with another
telnet session, hit continue and it happily carried on.
I think I just have to install JDK in this directory
now and all will be well.
Is this true?

Can Oracle7 and Oracle8 co-exist?

2001-02-23 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I want to install Oracle 8.1.7 on the same
AIX 4.3.2 box which is already running
Oracle 7.3.4.5. I will use a separate Oracle
owner and Oracle home for the new 8.1.7 software.

Has anybody had any problems with these two
versions co-existing on the same platform?
I have them both installed now but before
I spend a lot of time trying to break it I
thought I'd check to see whether or not this
has worked out at other sites.

RE: Can Oracle7 and Oracle8 co-exist?

2001-02-26 Thread Ben Poels

Hi Scott,

Nice to hear from you again. I am migrating several
warehouses on the same server from 734 to 817. If I
use a separate owner then I won't have to worry about
running different profiles when I sign on. (heh I'm
getting older with some gray hairs and I am liable to
forget which set of databases I'm working on). I also
can set up separate cron jobs under the different
owner sign-ins and easily migrate one warehouse at a time.
I don't really see any drawbacks to using different
owners even if it isn't a requirement.

Ben,
This is no problem. They don't need to have different owners. If you
are running Oracle Applications 10.7, and you want to use an Oracle 8i
instance to house it, then you must do this type of install. You will
have 2 Oracle homes, each with it's own database listener and all
associated files. They will be installed in separate directories, by
default. You will need to have a way to setup your environment when you
login to pick the Oracle home you want to use and setup all of the
environment variables correctly.

If you have access to Metalink there is a good article there (Doc. 69642 or
just put your subject in search), which lists all different causes why this
might happen audit dir being full is one of them, ORACLE_HOME and/or SID set
inapropriatelly, and a number of others.
