RE: Connection Problem

2003-06-30 Thread FOX, Simon
Thanks folks (a useful gender-neutral word).

Suggestions received were
clean up old names files
try pinging name and ip address
use ip address in names file instead of a name
trace.

I have 4 Oracles on the machine so I renamed old names files.

I then failed to ping by name, but was able to ping by ip address.

So I changed the names file to use ip address instead of name.

At this point one of those little ironies that makes computing such fun
stepped in. Unbeknown to me the server went down so it seemed that the
combined knowledge of this list had brought my Oracle system to its knees.

However once service was restored all worked.

I access a database from 2 different sites, having a PC at each site.

At one site I use NT and have no problems.

At the other site I use Win 2000 and usually get an error message when
trying to log on

ORA-12545 Connect failed because target host or object does not exist

Occasionally it lets me on.

People at the other site tell me that they can connect ok

Anyone know what might be causing the problem?

A name resolution problem? Symptoms for the site with problems are
consistent with not getting consistently consistent service from your name
server. Look are your tnsnames.ora and see if it has the name of host
there. If so, try putting in the IP address instead.

Try turning on SQL Net tracing to discover the problem. Turn on tracing on
the client PC by adding the appropriate trace parameters to the sqlnet.ora
file.
This will produce a trace file upon your next connection attempt and you
will be able to (hopefully) see what is causing the problem. It is hard
for anyone to diagnose a connectivity problem without more information like
which version of Oracle, is a Names Server being used?, does the target
server's IP address exist in the PC's local host file?, etc.

I think that much better than voluntary contributions will be some
s*u*b*s*c*r*i*p*t*i*o*n fees - like $1 per month or better $12 per year. I
am sure that
everybody working with Oracle and living in US or UK or other developed
country can afford such fees. We will not need to charge people from
developing countries - I am sure these subscription fees will generate more
than $500 per month.

RE: SQLLDR Question

Can you remove the comma between date and time to make it 1 field?

I am trying to load a file that has the fields comma-delimited,
variable length. A sample line from the file looks like this:

503,414081660,Success,Auth,AH9042,z,4555,-,-,-,0,05/01/01,14:21

The problem I am having is putting the date and time together. The
control file looks like this:

load data
infile 'cyber_real.dat'
append
into table rit_cyber_hist
when order_id 'Order ID' and order_id ''
fields terminated by ','
(order_id,
 trans_nbr,
 cyber_status,
 trans_type,
 auth_code,
 avs_code,
 trans_amt,
 cic_resp,
 po_nbr,
 ship_to_zip,
 tax_amt,
 trans_date date(14) mm/dd/yy,hh:mi)

It ignores the time portion of the file, I presume because it has a
comma before it and it assumes that it is a different field. I can't
figure out any way to get this loaded with the trans_date field
containing both the date and time.

This is on Oracle 8.1.6.0 on Sun Solaris.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

RE: SQL loader query

2001-05-17 Thread FOX, Simon

In a recent mail on a similar topic someone said that in 8i there is a
FILLER field in SQL*Loader that allows you to jump over a column. Prior to
8i you are stuck.

I have been recommended a brand new book on SQL*Loader. Not yet bought or
read it.

It is available in the States but not yet in the UK. e.g. Amazon.com

you can use the skip option of the sql loader. in ur case it should be
skip=1(if headings are also separated by commas)
can have the full help by typing sqlldr help=y at the command prompt.

 Friends,

I have the classic case of a comma separated text file which I want to
upload
and I need to know how can I enforce the following behavior of the SQL
Loader:

 1. To ignore the first row of the data file (which contains the column
titles)

 2. Avoid uploading of a column from the middle of the data file

 Thanks in advance,
 Pierre
