Title: Yep.it's a Monday..

My
damager just DTS'ed a bunch of tables that are critical for our web apps to
work back on themselves.  When he set up the DTS he thought he was going
from our production box to our test box but did the DTS from production to
production.   The problem was that he had the tables be deleted as the
first part of the DTS.  At least I know that my backups work.  Had
everything restored in about 15 minutes and the web sites are up and
running.  Yea, I know it is SQL Server but I have to deal with that
also.  At  least he doesn't mess with my Oracle DB's.  Any other
Monday stories for today??

8.0.5 standard edition

2003-10-29 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
By any chance does anyone know where I can download this?? Long story but I need to
downgrade a database from 8.0.5 enterprise to standard edition. The admins can't find
the standard CD. I have been looking on oracles site but have not found it yet. I
guess I wouldn't expect to since it is a bit outdated.

Thanks,

This
beast does not exist.  You can use the Database Maintenance Plans in EM to
manage your backups.  I have found these to be flaky and prefer writing my
own custom backup plans in scripts and schedule these as jobs.  >From my
experience on SQL Server I recommend doing a native SQL Server backup to disk,
then have the third party backup software pickup those files to

DBAs who are pure production DBAs and have no knowledge of development and

Ive worked with quite a few DBAs who only
know a fraction of what they think they do. Same holds true for developers
and managers. So its not one way. Attitude is harder to overcome than
competence. Someone with a good attitude can learn. Someone who knows and
has a bad attitude can be intolerable.

The worst kind though is the jack of all

Might
find something in your SID.log.  This is in your

restarting my listener service a few times a week took care of it.  Also
adding more memory helped.  I had a TAR with Oracle on this and they
recommended the stopping and restarting the listener service.  I am on

connect to it -- it does this about
  every 7 to 8
days.  It use to do it every 2 days, but the Tier 3 TPOCS helpdesk
  recommended we increase the
  ram on the server from
512MB to 1GB.  Then the problem started occurring every 7 to 8
  days.  To make the problem
  go away I reboot the
server -- it only takes 10 minutes, however, I feel this a very poor
  work-around.

  Which logs could I
look in that would give you guys more information (like an error code) on why
  Oracle refuses
  client connections and
then how would we make this problem go away.  it is becoming a
  PITA.

Managing Archived Redo Logs

2003-07-24 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
I finally get to put our 8.1.7 on NT databases into archivelog mode. We have a third
party app vendor that would not support us if I did this but I finally convinced them
that is the way to go and it should not effect the app. Anyway, I am reading chapter
7 from the Administrators Guide, Managing Archived Redo Logs. I know I have to set
the parameters in the init.ora to achieve automatic archiving;

log_archive_start=true
log_archive_dest_1 = "location=my\disk\drive"
log_archive_format=%%ORACLE_SID%%T%T%S.ARC  -or somthing like that

One thing I don't see in TFM is, do these archived redo logs just keep accumulating in
the destination directory set in the log_archive_dest_1 parameter? Do I need to
create a process to get them to tape and then once on tape, delete these old archive
redo logs through my process?
I'm just excited to be able to finally go to archivelog mode. Once I get the basics
down then I want to investigate using RMAN.

Thanks,

Dave

SHOW ERRORS not working

2003-07-21 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
I have a developer that has ALTER ANY PROCEDURE rights. He changes a procedure, then
compiles it and it says there are errors. But when he does a SHOW ERRORS in SQPlus,
it shows nothing. If I do the same thing I can see the errors from the compiled
procedure. I assume this is a permissions thing but have not been able to figure this
one out. Anyone have any ideas on this?

RE: SORT_AREA_SIZE question

2003-06-25 Thread Farnsworth, Dave

You want a sorts to disk ratio of 1 percent
or less.  To find this run this;

dispatch> column name format
a30dispatch> select name, value  2  from
v$sysstat  3  where name like 'sort%';

NAME
VALUE-- -sorts
(memory)
283420sorts
(disk)
64sorts
(rows)
29507963

the ratio of sorts =
round((64/283420)*100,3)
ratio of sorts = 0.023%

Learned this from the Oracle DBA 101 book,
one of the best buys I made.

  SORT_AREA_SIZE question
  Hello,

I joined this list last week, so I apologize in advance if I'm asking a
question that has previously been answered.

I am responsible for a reporting database/data mart that is approximately
175 GB.  Our main fact table ranges from 1-14 GB depending upon how far
along we are into our financial year.  I have large reports that run full
table scans on this table daily.  In an effort to keep as much of the
sorting in memory as possible I have specified SORT_AREA_SIZE to be
100MB.  Some of the tuning books I am reading now are making me
second-guess myself and I am wondering if this is overkill.

Can anyone provide some advice on how large they are setting their
SORT_AREA_SIZE values for their DSS systems?

  Thanks in advance,

  Bart

RE: Retreiving data from SQL Server

2003-06-17 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
You must put double quotes around column names in select and where clauses and it is
VERY case sensitive.  Note the following query;

select "concontainer" from [EMAIL PROTECTED] where "conID" = 1;

if you tried this with the field of "conid" it would fail. It's a pain in the butt
that is how it works. Be sure to look at the table structures on SQL Server to get
the proper case of the field names.
Hope this helps.

Also, can anyone suggest any similar mailing list

We do shutdown abort. But we do checkpoint before shutdown abort i.e,

alter system checkpoint;
shutdown abort;

Then, while bringing up, we do

startup restrict;
shutdown immediate;
startup

works. Didn't see that mentioned in TFM.

1* select "mpp_id" from [EMAIL PROTECTED]

mpp_id

LESS

Dave,

SQL Server is case-sensitive, when it comes to table names, column names.
When stored in SQL Server data dictionary, they aren't converted into
upper-case, as it is with Oracle (unless you use quotes around names).
So, try to use the exact "case" when specifying field names (as they are
stored in SQL Server data dictionary).

You
can rename the alert log or move it.  Oracle will create a new one the next

Good luck. We've had nothing but problems trying to use that config. As
far as we could tell, the DB was fine. It was the external Java stuff that
didn't work, specifically OMS. It would be fine for a connect or two, then
crash, then not want to restart.

And of course, since there are no FREE Linuxes "supported" (That has GOT to
change -- what's the point of going to Linux if I have to pay for it, Oracle
Corp??? I'd rather stick with Solaris, which ironically is free on Sun's
hardware.) for 9iR2, you're probably S.O.L., like us.

deadlock problem

2003-03-10 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
I am trying to do a TRUNCATE TABLE My_Table but keep getting this error;

A self-deadlock among DDL and parse locks
is detected. In most cases, this self-deadlock
is handled internally.
This should be reported to Oracle Support
ONLY IF an error is signalled back to the
user on a command-line or screen.
The following information may aid in finding
the problem.
ORA-04020: deadlock detected while trying to lock object DFARNSWORTH.REGION_ZIPS

This is in my test environment and there should not be anything else locking the
table. Any ideas??

Thanks,

Dave

Hi,

So my boss comes over this morning and tells me that the users are having a
performance problem with a 3rd party application that have recently began
using. This is an oracle database where they bought the software and had
the system admin install the software which included the vendors instruction
of creating and setting up the database (basically use the defaults). It is
an Oracle 8.1.7 database on Windows 2000. He wants me to find out "if you
can create some indexes or something", etc. (he likes to give solutions
before the cause if discovered).

Anyway, I decide to take a look at it. The performance they are
complaining about is when they log into the application it takes about a
minute for their initial screen (which includes a list of values) to appear.
I use the tool that someone posted here a while ago, SQL Monitor from
www.fastalgo.com, and find that during the time the user is waiting for the
first screen the application is executing a sql statement about 2200 times.

The SQL is: SELECT PARENTID FROM PROC_ WHERE PROCEDUREID=:1
The bind variable is different for each execution with appears to be the
procedureid values from the table proc_. Table proc_ has 2203 rows.
I check the executions for the sql text in v$sqlarea. Executions = 58,825.
(aha, I think this is the problem).
I explain plan the query and find that it is using the primary key index.

My tuning skills are still pretty basic. Since I have no control over the
application is there anything I can do to increase the performance of
running the query thousands of times?

Also how do you usually deal with 3rd party application issues like this?
95% of our databases/applications are from 3rd party vendors and it's a pain
trying to get them performing better.

Thanks,
Jeff Eberhard

Skill Sets - This may be a dumb question
  Hello everyone,
Well I've been "reassigned".  I was
responsible for the completely messed up Peoplesoft Oracle/AIX environment but
management here decided that it was more important to separate a husband and
wife that both work in the same department, and assigned one of them to be
primary support in this environment instead of me.  (sshh:  The new
person who is primary doesn't know a thing about Unix.)  My primary job
is now suppossed to be data modeling and data warehouse/mart design, moving on
into Problematica (er, Informatica) development into a Sql Server
database.  I will not be the admin on the Sql Server database.  My
new boss referred to this as "database architecture".  ??
What?  They have already decided what they want done and just want
someone to take the pretty pictures and implement them with unrealistic
  deadlines.
The main reason why I am upset is because it seems
to me that data modeling is such a "soft" skill.  I am concerned about
keeping my skills up to date and keeping my hands in an Oracle environment,
whether it's a mess or not.  Seems to me that data modeling alone isn't
something that can land you a new job or really spiff up your resume.  I
think that having a finite list of skills (Oracle, Unix, Windows 2000, Erwin,
Project, crap like that) is more what employers search for, and is what HR
  depts can easily deal with.
Am I wrong?  This job pays well and working
for a huge company has it's benefits, if you can deal with the bureaucracy
similar to what is described in the 1st paragraph.  And I know in this
market I am just lucky to have a job.
And please tell me if I'm whining.  I may just
need a KITA.  Who knows anymore...

RE: Service startup on Windows 2000 fails

2003-02-20 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
I cannot trust my network admins. They do crap without any notification. They will
make a change and then I will spend the next day trying to figure out what happened.
Their typical response is "Oh, we didn't know that the databases would be affected".
DO NOT TRUST NETWORK ADMINS. And from my time working in IS I have found that network
admins have no communication skills. These are NT guys. I had better luck with unix
network admins though. Go figure.

Lyndon, I wish I knew what caused the problem. And I have no idea how the monkey that

I am so busy whipping out volumes of pl/sql code that I can't stop to understand why.
I have to figure out how to smooth over the fact that we lost one day in our already
tight schedule that is making it necessary for me to work from home at night (DSL +

Cut, Paste, Test, Kill. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Wish I could just leave work and "get pissed out of my tree."

I want to set up a glogin.sql and a login.sql. I am reading the manual and I find
this. Oh yea. I'm on 8.1.7 on NT.

When you install SQL*Plus, LOGIN.SQL is copied to the DBS subdirectory, and GLOGIN.SQL
is copied to the SQLPLUS\ADMIN subdirectory of your Oracle home directory.
If you modify LOGIN.SQL or GLOGIN.SQL, make sure you do not add any ANSI escape
sequences.
See "Setting Up Your SQL*Plus Environment" in Chapter 3 of the SQL*Plus User's Guide
and Reference <../../server.817/a82950/toc.htm>, which describes the LOGIN.SQL and
GLOGIN.SQL files.

I can find the glogin.sql on my client PC and have edited it to my liking. But I
cannot find the login.sql and I do not have the DBS directory. I see a DBS directory
on the server but not on the client. Am I missing something or does login.sql not
exist on 8.1.7.

Thanks,

SQL Plus Environment

2003-02-11 Thread Farnsworth, Dave

I see a DBS directory

future I want to learn RMAN for hot backups but for now I do the following;

SHUTDOWN ABORT
STARTUP RESTRICT
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE

You mention about checkpointing, how can I do a checkpoint in my script
before the SHUTDOWN ABORT?

Let me throw in my 2 cents worth on this topic. There are two problems with
SHUTDOWN ABORT that I have experienced in the past.

1. Before 9i (it appears to be fixed in 9i) if you inserted data in a table,
then did a shutdown abort, if after restarting the database, you tried to
truncate the table while the database was performing recovery on that table,
the database would crash.

2. Assume that you have applications that are dynamically doing things like
adding and dropping tablespaces. WHat happens if the app is in the middle of
such an operation and it's in the middle of writing new records to the
control file. What is the result if you shutdown abort in the middle of this
write, before it's complete. We experienced a situation like this earlier
this week.

I've always been opposed to shutdown abort unless you are certain that you
have checkpointed and that there are no user sessions operating on the
database.

Cheers!

When we do cold backups, our script issues 'shutdown immediate', if within 3
minutes the db is not shut down, we cancel and issue 'shutdown abort'. In
either case, we (again issue) startup/shutdown to make it clean before
taking backup.

We don't worry about users connecting, as during cold backup window, the
listeners are shutdown. For us it is a circus (kind of) because our
production DBs talk to each other, so we have to follow a specific seq of
shutdown/startup.

So far we haven't encountered any major issues because of 'shutdown abort'
... (heavily knocking on the wood !!)

Oracle Training

I have been told that I will finally get a budget for some training and want to get
some in Oracle. I see that Learning Tree has some classes. Do you guys have any
recommendations to links to point me to other sources for classes. Everything I have
learned has been from RTFM and books from some of this lists esteemed members.
Sometimes it is nice to have a class to move to the next level quicker than from
reading. Any recommendations will be great.

This is one of my main ways that I survive, I really like cheat sheets. Also have a

We're in the process of updating our DR plan and adding some more detail
!. So I've been racking the auld grey matter and trying to identify a
list of useful hardcopy documents which would be really useful for DR. The
type of documents you store in a folder at home and bring along should the
sh#t hit the fan. What I've come up with so far is:

[1] Over view diagram of server showing disk config details and locations
of various key database files. This doc also includes high level server
spec and IP info.
[2] Relevant Technical Operating Procedures.
[3] Log forms for DB restore and backup.
[4] List of dirs per server included in tape backup schedule.
[5] List of backups per server including info on backup dirs and locations
of log files.
[6] List of scheduled jobs on each server, time, freq, command line to
submit.
[7] Copy of DR plan and Technical manual for primary production system on
CD.

The following get backed up disk-to-disk T,W,Th,F,S and are included on tape
incremental:
Binary and text dumps of control file.
Script which creates dynamic script to run offline database backups.
Disk to disk backup of database.
Archived redo logs.

I'm thinking some type of crib sheet with useful commands for that DR
situation might be useful too.

So what else would you as a DBA like to have in this folder to support a
smooth and efficient as possible DR?.

Oh yeah our SLA is that we recover DB as was at time of last working day
(M-F) backup.

RE: The lightbulb goes on - WAS-Debate on rc commands Solaris and Oracle

2003-01-31 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
Ok, so I changed my cold backup script lastnight so it does this;

connect internal/amianidiot
shutdown abort
startup restrict
shutdown normal
exit

It then does the abort and the startup and then the shutdown normal but then I get
this and my database hangs;

Shutting down instance (normal)
License high water mark = 10
Fri Jan 31 03:05:35 2003
SHUTDOWN: waiting for logins to complete.

So now I was totally ready to go postal, but then rational thinking prevailed so I
RTFMed.  I then come across this in the FM;

Typically, all users with the CREATE SESSION system privilege can connect to an open
database. Opening a database in restricted mode allows database access only to users
with both the CREATE SESSION and RESTRICTED SESSION system privilege; only database
administrators should have the RESTRICTED SESSION system privilege

So my question is, should all users be created with the system privilege of CREATE
SESSION and only I get the RESTRICTED SESSION in addition? Am I reading this
correctly that for the STARTUP RESTRICT to work all users need to have the CREATE
SESSION privilege? We have some third party replication software that is trying to
make a connection to Oracle every 5 seconds and I think this was the culprit. It DID
NOT have the CREATE SESSION but it does now so I am curious as to if the database will
shutdown tonight. Did I actually learn something??

Thanks,

Dave(iamanidiot) :o)

I'll echo that sentiment.

'shutdown abort', 'startup restrict' was a regular part of my
shutdown scripts beginning in 1994 with 7.0.16, as
'shutdown immediate' wasn't all that reliable, even in situations
where it should have worked.

Average age for a DBA? I'm 42 and I am a jogger (3-4 miles a day), I play
hoops.
Sometimes I go rollerskating to Central Park, in New York City or skating.
Did I
mention that I enjoy playing Ping-Pong?

If the temperature doesn't drop below 60, where do you go cross country
skiing? To some, summer is a space between winters. Now, summer does
make for a better commute - my hour and fifteen can quickly turn into
three in winter!

As for DBA's not exercising, I'd be interested in knowing if it is a
generational thing. Depending on the season, I bicycle, kayak (sea), or
ski for fun and, sometimes, exercise and do so relatively often. I
probably see more people engaged in similar activities who are in their
mid-late 30's, 40's and 50's than in their 20's and early 30's. I
wonder what the average age is for Oracle DBA's?

I guess I'll go with this method since I have a couple of cold backups that hang on
the SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE and will remain hung until I rectify the situation. I have had
TAR's on this but this could not be resolved. I'm just more confident to see others
doing this. Does anyone have this problem on a non-windoze platform?? It seems like
I only see windoze users having this problem.

I'll echo that sentiment.

'shutdown abort', 'startup restrict' was a regular part of my
shutdown scripts beginning in 1994 with 7.0.16, as
'shutdown immediate' wasn't all that reliable, even in situations
where it should have worked.

You are getting some excellent responses to your question (which I consider
very "on topic"). We had a good discussion on this list previously. I went
to Google and entered fatcity production dba and was able to pick up the
thread.
As to your question of OLTP vs. DSS situations, I think the differences
are more subtle. I thing OLTP environments are more standard than DSS
environments. Our DSS is more relaxed since it is a weekly load. Sunday and
Monday are the critical days. Some of it is attitude, not being a
normalization bigot, realizing that marketing people are a different species
that will never know their needs in advance.

difference in the role(s) played by a DBA in OLTP and DSS environments?
Your invaluable viewpoints in this regard is most welcome.

I have the Oracle Performance Tuning 101 book and I have been reading the Performance
Tuning Guide on OTN, however, I found its explanation of when to use messages and how
to write queries extremely terse. Are there any websites or books which focus strictly
on query tuning that provide more in depth explanations and examples?

Very good point. I know where I work, HR classifies DBA as an analyst for pay
reasons. The Senior DBA position, is more of a management-type role. More money,
more management responsibilities but less actual DBA work.

I'm new at this game and am running into this Oracle error in our

I have searched on the web and the archives but I am not sure about a
resolution to this issue. Any comments/insights would be appreciated.

After investigating the issue, I found that there is a crash when trying
to insert into temporary tables tmp_asn_ship,tmp_asn_ord and other
temporary tables.

Here are the errors:

RE: SqlServer and Oracle on the Same NT Box

2003-01-21 Thread Farnsworth, Dave
Tom,

Works for me. I have Oracle 8.0.5 running on the same server as SQL Server 2000. The
main thing to watch for is how the two databases compete for system resources. If
both are going to small and have nonintensive apps you should be fine.

All,

Has anyone installed and run SqlServer and Oracle on the same NT box? I've
heard mixed rumors that either you can or cannot do it. Both databases
would be very small with very few transactions.

The real key to this issue is not making it a GS requirement, but in
getting parents off their butts and being parents. I continually work
with my kids, especially my daughters (ages 17,16,12) to be individuals
and go for what they like and find interesting. Forget the pop culture
and fashion junk you see in the mags and on the tube! I encourage them to
be themselves and find contentment in that. This whole "Dork Factor"
thing is out of control with the 10-19 age group, especially among girls.

It's sad that there isn't a requirement for the science/math activities
in the Girl Scouts. The problem is that society in general doesn't show
images of science as being "cool" and definitely doesn't show images of
women as scientists. Or at least, not enough images.

I have
encouraged and pushed science on my daughter and son.  My daughter started
college this year and wants to go into the biological sciences.  I
periodically have been a guest teacher at our local schools to teach some
physics and am amazed at the lack of interest in general by the
females.  And knowing many of the families of these girls I would attribute
this to the parents.

Well, it's been a while since I was in college (1999) but I
always felt singled out in a class.  Some teachers, that were as old as
the hills, truly felt that women should not be in science and did not hesitate
to say so.  Other teachers could not keep their eyes off my legs - I had
to leave work and go directly to school for years. Never mind complaining, the
department didn't care. There was only one woman professor, but she taught
advanced AI.  I never got to take any of her classes.  I never saw a
female physics or math professor at the university.
I had one (male) algebra teacher tell me that "maybe you just
shouldn't study math."  However it was a female teacher at a community
college that finally got me through 3 quarters calculus.  To this day I
credit her with making me feel that I was capable of understanding higher math
and pushing me and the whole class to do so.
  I didn't finish my bachelor's, I didn't need to and I didn't
need the stress.  But I can see how the declining IT market (no
22-year-old CIOs anymore) paired with this kind of treatment in school would
push a detail-oriented young woman to study something else.
Personally I wish I would have become a nurse.
Just my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth.

Dennis,

I think that the article is correct that girls and teens are sensitive to
the "geek stigma factor".Even in our 10-year-old Girl Scout troop, the
girls are already concerned about their images and not being too "dorky".
We have many more girls vote for activities involving animals and crafts
than activities centered on math and science. The votes are usually about
8 to 1 with only one or two girls voting to do the math or science
activities. Pretty sad, especially considering that the Girl Scouts
organization tries really hard to push those technical and math/science
programs and make them interesting and fun.

The 25% number cited in the article for women in the IT sector seems pretty
close to the number that we have show up at our local Oracle User's Group
meeting. I think that the participation by women in our user's group has
increased steadily in the last 10 years.

Perhaps more women are drawn to database work than IT in general as it
tends to be more administrative than say, programming.

I'd also have to say that in many cases, being an Oracle DBA can be pretty
grueling for those with families and for women with families in particular.

I've found a wonderful resource in the following book:

"Oracle DBA on Unix and Linux"
by Michael Wessler

It covers some of the differences in features between 8i and 9i as well as
handling the specifics of administrating Oracle specifically on Unix
platforms. Highly recommended (at least by me).
