Srini,

But be careful - the Change Management pack for OEM is a purchaseable

 Srini,
Use the change manager that comes with Oracle Enterprise manager. The
initial set-up is little bit difficult. But once u r through, then it is an
handy tool.

RE: Database Comparison

2002-01-09 Thread HAWKINS, JAMES W [IT/1000]

Srini,

I would suggest going to http://www.toadsoft.com and downloading the
freeware version in order to use the "Schema Compare" tool. All it would
require would be a database link between your Production DB and your QA DB,
or vice-versa. It will show you all object differences.

Materialized views with query_rewrite enabled. Can work wonders for
long-running reports. This was available in 8i, so not exactly new to 9i,

What are considered to be some of the best practices for physical database
layout in 9i for data warehouses.

This would be on Sun Solaris 2.6 and 9.0.1 (or possibly 9.0.2 if it comes
out anytime soon). Would be using partitioning and star schema as well as
bit-map indexes.

Anything important to consider in 9i in terms of new features for data
warehousing? Any thing to watch out for?

Thanks for any experience you might have in this area.

RE: EMC Not Releasing Space

2002-01-08 Thread HAWKINS, JAMES W [IT/1000]

Walter,

We had the same exact problem on our SAP installation running on EMC
Symmetrix. The space would not be release until the database was bounced.
We never did find a work-around.

Hi,

Just curious if anyone has any experience with an EMC
Symmetrix not releasing the space for a deleted
datafile. If so, is there a solution or work-around?

Yesterday, we took a tablespace offline, dropped it
and then deleted the associated datafile. The file was
1G in size and today the space has still not been
released as indicated by 'df -k'. According to another
DBA here, they have seen this in the past and said
bouncing the DB remedied the problem.

It sounds like the inodes are still in use by Oracle
but I can't imagine why. I've worked with Symmetrix
systems before and have never experienced this
behavior. We are running 8.1.7.2 (64bit) on Solaris
2.8. Any suggestions?

As always, your feedback is appreciated.

Jim,

Oops! Right after I sent this, I saw that you asked to find, not delete,
duplicates.

Sorry, I've spent the last two days de-duping a bunch of tables, so I've got
deletion on the brain.

How about:

Select SomeColumn
>From MyTable
Where MyColumn In
(
 Select MyColumn
 From My Table
 Group By MyColumn
 Having Count(*) > 1
)
;

Jim,

An option that handles multiple duplicates is:

Delete
>From MyTable
Where (MyColumn,RowID) In
(
 Select MyColumn,RowID
 From MyTable
 Minus
 Select MyColumn,Min(RowID)
 From MyTable
 Group By MyColumn
);

You could use Max(RowID) as well, depending on your needs.

Hi -
Does anyone have experience with either of these
products?  I'm interested in ease of
installation, ease of use, and quality of support.  I realize
they are both pricey, but they both seem to do a
lot.  I've been asked to look at
alternatives (I'm sure the cost will be prohibitive, but we'll see).

Also if you know of any comparable tools, I'm
very interested to hear about them.
Thanks much - Lisa -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com -- Author: YTTRI

Lisa,

I
believe Oracle tries to restore the most recent version of the archivelogs,
according to the timestamp in the catalog.  But if that's corrupted or not
found for whatever reason, you can get it from the other
backupset.

Jim

P.S.  Sorry for the vague answer, but I haven't ever had to do this
so I'm not sure myself.  I can ask our RMAN Guru if you really want to know

  Interesting.  Does rman ever get
confused during a restore or does it just grab the most convenient backup set
with the required archive logs on it? I don't suppose you can parallel restore
your arclogs from different files/tapes?  (There goes that monkey

else out there - it may have already come up though.  We backup the
archivelogs first without deleting them, and then immediately backup another
set with the "delete" specified.  Obviously, this is because anything
can happen to that first set (corruptions, etc.), and if that's your only
set, then you're screwed.  The chances of the same archivelog
being corrupt in both sets is very low (unless the source archivelog is
corrupted), but at least you are protected against all the copy
errors.  Also, it's very probable (for us, anyway) that each copy of
the archivelog will be on different physical tapes, which in itself is
important to us since operations is outsourced ; )

Sepi,

Just a guess - are all three instances listed in your /etc/oratab file? I'm
pretty sure OEM looks at that to determine what instances the Agent should
monitor. I could be wrong on this though - it's been a while since I've
looked at OEM.

Hi,

I have a problem with Enterprise Manager.

I am trying to refresh a node in order to get information of all instances
on that machine. I am able to see two of three instances. Why I cannot see
all of them. Setting up the preferences are ok, I have tested all user-id's
and passwords.

TIA,

Scott,

NT? I think the habaneros and tequila have finally taken over...

;)

Seriously, stay away from NT. I have the unfortunate task of monitoring a
few minor databases on NT in addition to my Unix ones, and I hate every
minute of it. The locks it places on open files prevent you from doing a
lot of things with the database up, it has to be rebooted every month, and
it is a nightmare to administer remotely. We use pcAnywhere which only
allows one user in at a time. I curse NT and Gates every day...

Need script to generate DDL for snapshot/materialized view recrea

2001-09-13 Thread HAWKINS, JAMES W [IT/1000]
hy, I ask, does the Jewish
people generate so much suffering, why do we inflict - on others and
ourselves - so much pain. What is the source of the Israeli sense of
pride, why is the act of killing considered so great in our eyes.

I am a soldier in the Israeli army, imprisoned for refusal to take
part in repression, arising from a sense that it is out of the
question to be a Jew, the son of a people of refugees, and yet
repress a people of refugees (there's no disagreement in the Israeli
public regarding repression of the Palestinians, merely over whether
or not it's justified). I am a God-fearing Jew, and as such forbidden
to take part in denying freedom and serving in occupied territory. I
am imprisoned, but yet feel freer than most of the Israelis I've met,
for one simple reason: I don't bear the burden of vindictiveness and
the perverse gratification attending it. I don't bear the burden of
denial and callousness. I am concerned for humans as such. For those
denied the right to live like me, with food and clothes and fun and
good health and dreams of success and a car. I am concerned for
people who are humiliated every day, who are denied the right to work,
who are imprisoned within their towns and villages. I am concerned
for those whose homes have been demolished and their fruit groves
   devastated.

I am concerned because I know that the terrible hatred towards me is
justified. This hatred has led to horrifying and perverted
manifestations, like the young suicide bombers, but we create the
conditions that lead to this monstrosity. I am concerned because I
know that the cries of exultation over the killings drown out the
sobs of the numerous victims, Jews and Arabs, of the widows and
orphans, of the cripples who will suffer for the rest of their lives
because of that pride and callousness.

This is a concern unlike that of most of the Israeli people. For this
concern demands correction [tikkun] whereas the other concern merely
calls for more destruction. I am a prisoner yet free, but the pain
runs deep. I hope my imprisonment, and that of others, will lead many
in our society to contemplation - contemplation of the Palestinians,
and by way of them, contemplation of ourselves. I regard my
imprisonment as the true way to participate in presentday Israeli
society. I don't think my imprisonment releases me from
responsibility. Even if I weren't serving in the army, I'd continue
to share responsibility for these actions. I'm not the victim. On the
contrary: precisely because I regard myself as sharing responsibility,
I refuse to take part in the repression.

I am a soldier and wish to serve my country. I am a part of Israeli
society: that is where I find people I love, including some who act
contrary to my convictions. They include right and left. I just want
us Israelis - strong, triumphant - to look into the eyes of those we
repress, and try to understand them. For the victory of might is no
victory. Our fears will leave us only when we consent to equality
between peoples and between individuals. We too shall continue to
live in fear as long as we implement oppression and deny elementary
   rights.

Instead of justifying suffering - that which we inflict, and our own -
we should try to solve it by self correction [tikkun atzmi]. Faith in
tikkun is a weapon more powerful than tanks. I regard my imprisonment
as a foundation for tikkun, and hope that by way of thinking about it,
others will look at the reality about us, and contribute to change.

RE: how to stop a killed session bothering me ?

2001-08-07 Thread HAWKINS, JAMES W [IT/1000]

If you did a "shutdown abort", wouldn't you still have to wait for the
rollback to happen during instance recovery on the startup? I've never
tried this - I usually just suffer through the rollback.

You should wait for PMON ending its job of rollback
the transaction of that killed session. Since one of
the releases of 8i that duty is a new one for the
SMON.

You have few options. If you are in a hurry, you could
do shutdown abort. First issue an alter system
checkpoint; just in case a maybe possible recover
problem later. You see that it is a little risky. With
a shutdown immediate, you might wait a lot. Even that
you could afford it because of the dangerous of the
abort option. The other is to issue through svrmgrl or
sqlplus depending on the release an

oradebug wakeup

However there is a little chance that with this you
could hurry the PMON for the rollback of the
transaction.

You can see how much work the PMON or SMON have to do
through v$transaction:

select b.sid,a.used_ublk from v$transaction
a,v$session b
where addr=taddr and b.status='KILLED';

Regards.

RE: OT -- suggestions to ensure nerdiness in potential IT

2001-08-04 Thread HAWKINS, JAMES W [IT/1000]

I don't know if any of these guys played in the same movie or not, but I can
guarantee you they all are within six degrees of Kevin Bacon...

http://www.cs.virginia.edu/oracle/

i.e.:

The Oracle says: Red Skelton has a Bacon number of 2.

Red Skelton was in Fuller Brush Girl, The (1950) with Eddie Albert
Eddie Albert was in Big Picture, The (1989) with Kevin Bacon

Actually, Davy Crockett was dead before the invention of TV. But he was
played by Fess Parker in the TV movies with the same name. Having said
that,
I don't beleive that Fess Parker, Red Skelton and Danny Kaye ever together,
but I have been know to be wrong before.
