Priority paging and Solaris 8

2003-09-03 Thread Jos
List,
This is not entirely an Oracle question, more related
to Solaris 8. We had some reports which run for 5 to
10 minutes and the unix process gone to sleep for an
hour before it woke up and finished. The Oracle
session showed that they are waiting for SQL message
from client. During the same period, there were a lot
of paging activity happening on the swap disk and the
Oracle database itself is not doing much. I remember
in Solaris 2.6, we have to set priority_paging to 1 in
/etc/system to improve paging performance, so Solaris
won't page out application executable. However, this
is Solaris 8, I just checked the documentation, we are
not suppose to set priority_paging. I am a bit
confuse, I am seeing the symptom of application code
being paged out but this problem seem to be fixed in
Solaris 8. Is anyone had any experience with paging
performance on Solaris 8?

Re: Increase tablespace, which way is better?

2003-07-19 Thread Jos
Please correct me if I am wrong. With option 1, the datafile will dynamically extend, 1M at a time and there is no guarantee the datafile is contiguous on disk. That will increase your I/O time when Oracle need to find data all over the disk. And also with autoextend, you may run out of space on that disk at any time (ie someone else created a big datafile on that disk), with option 2 at least you know you have 100M available for that datafile on the disk.

Jos,

Yes, you are right that if you use OCFS then you can just have one mount point and create all
data files under it, because OCFS is a file system.  It makes it a lot easier to manage space
and you can use commands like: cp, mv, rm etc which you can't do to a raw partition.
Backup on OCFS is also easier than using raw.

Setting up raw partition on Linux

2002-12-30 Thread Jos
Dear List:
I am not an unix admin nor I know a lot about Linux, however I need to setup RAC on Linux, I am confused about setting up raw partitions for RAC. On the Linux installation Disk setup screen, I can create new partition, however I don't know what type I should use for the raw partition, none of types ext2, ext3, raid, swap and vfat seem to be appropriate. Any ideas?? Any reference link to know more about this??

Re: Size of Oracle server processes

Tim,
I think your observation is correct, every Apps logon
does create two sessions. How is that affecting the
size of the server process? Do you mean the size is
the sum of the two sessions? In glance, most of the
memory size came out of the data segment of the
process.

Size of Oracle server processes

2002-07-15 Thread Jos Someone
I have a question to ask regarding Oracle server process (oracle) size. We have just installed Oracle Apps 11i, while monitoring the system using glance, I notice something strange, the oracle server processes - process which has a name oracle has a very big RSS size in glance, these processes were associated with the f60webmx processes. I was curious about the size of it, normally these processes are about 2-3M big. I did a quick test by logging on to the database using sqlplus and observe the size of the oracle server process, it showed  a size of 2M. So why the oracle processes size is so big where they are assoicated with f60webmx, is it something special about them? Or the RSS size shown in glance is doubling up on something?
