Server Recommendations

2003-03-14 Thread Tom Schruefer
I have a question, I have to make a decision on the purchase of a new web
server for a multiteir Oracle based system. So here are my two remaining
options, all other things remaining equal, on a system which has 100%
dynamically generated web pages.

1. A server with one 2ghz CPU.

or

2. A server with two 1ghz CPU.

Which will provide more power?

A little more food for though. Would a server with a 1ghz CPU and 512mb RAM
be adequate for a Oracle backed web site, which the pages are all 100%
dynamic?

RE: Apple rack-mounted servers

2002-08-13 Thread Tom Schruefer

Interesting. Has anyone purchased and/or installed one of these X Servers?
Being essentially UNIX, I'd prefer one of these over a MacOS server or
WinXX.

Background, we are looking to replace about 10 MacOS servers in our High
Schools right now.

I have seen references to this error and how to repair it on UNIX systems,

Redo Logs Question

2001-12-31 Thread Tom Schruefer

Here is the background of the stiuation I am facing.

We are piloting a application that uses a hybred store and forward system to
aggregate all of our disparate student data into one central database.
Currently there are 20 schools integrated into the system with another 48 to
go, those 20 schools hold about half of our 46k student population.

The system allows (requires) student demographics to be entered through a
web client, while grades, attendance, health, conduct, etc. are uploaded
over night.

The system comes with the redo log file size set to 5k, which when the users
in the 20 pilot schools get going causes a log switch about every 90
seconds. In my limited, steep learning curve expereince, this does not seem
like a good thing. Add to that, they cancelled the Oracle Tuning class,
which I have to wait until the system is in to take now.

So my questions (that the books don't really seem to want to answer):

How frequently should redo log file switches occur?

How large should my redo logs be?

I am guessing the answer to both of these questions is, It Depends. So my
question really is, how do I determine what the correct settings for my
installation are?

Statspack Problem

2002-05-20 Thread Tom Schruefer

I am running 8.1.6 on a Win2000 SP2 machine.

When I try running 'statscre.sql' as SYS, the first script completes fine,
but when the second script tries to connect perfstat/perfstat , I get the
error, "You are no longer connected to Oracle TNS:ORA-12154". Of course the
system then proceeds to attempt to run the other two scripts returning about
a hundred "not connected" error messages.

The Perfstat user was created and I did not have the chance to intervene and
change its password. Any ideas as to why the script would fail to connect?

I connected as internal in the first place to run the script, so I don't
think its TNS.

It does not look as though the SID_NAME parameter was set on the system I
was trying to install too. Although it was set on my test system, maybe
thats why it worked in test but not production.

Anyway, I am off to try again. Thanks for the idea.

Yes, I can login as 'perfstat', and any other user as well, it looks like
the script was able to create the user.

ID This Wait stat

2002-05-21 Thread Tom Schruefer

You know I could have all the documentation for Oracle printed on my brain,
buy all the books ever written about the subject, but the primary wait
problem that comes up will never be directly addressed.

So, what exactly does 'Slave Wait' mean and what can I do about it?

I am using DBWR Slaves, since it did not seem as though starting additional
DBWR's was appropriate on a Win2000 system.

Here are the Top 5 wait events as per Statpack and my shinny new 'Oracle
Performance Tuning 101' book:

Top 5 Wait Events
~ Wait %
Total
Event Waits Time (cs) Wt
Time
   -
--
slave wait 66,5936,793,939
88.85
PX Deq: Execution Msg 28,960 407,167
5.33
PX Deq: Table Q Normal 19,864 302,480
3.96
PX Deq Credit: send blkd3,685 123,671
1.62
PX Deq: Signal ACK 3,2145,294
.07

I have a pretty good idea that 2-5 are for parallel query option, although I
still have to figure out just what they mean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Statspack Problem

2002-05-21 Thread Tom Schruefer

I ran 'statscre' again and got the same message again. It seemed to prevent
SQL*Plus from logging into any account. So, I quit, re-started SQL*Plus and
logged in as Perfstat and ran the remaining two scripts, which then
completed without incident.

I have been able to take a couple snapshots with statspack over the last 3
hours and now I have another question. But new question, new email.

Now that's a truly useful site, someone could make that into one of those

Question about OFA and RAID 5

2001-07-10 Thread Tom Schruefer

Any suggestions on the message below would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have been appointed our new Oracle DBA and have since been taking
classes and reading books. I quite enjoyed the recent thread on OFA. I
seem to have a bit of a quandary, here it is.

We have 68 schools with 46,000 students, each with their own student
database, we have purchased a product that will allow us to aggregate all
of these databases into one central database. This project is but one
step toward a centralized student data system, which we currently do not
have the infrastructure for.

Here is the suggested configuration for the database server for this
product.

2 9GB HD in a RAID 1 - Suggested for the OS and LOGS
6 18GB HD in RAID 5 - Database
1 18GB HD Hot Spare

I realize that something of this nature would allow for a lot of disk
through-put (I would think), but it doesn't really allow for a OFA
configuration.

I should clarify at this time that there were two choices for the DB
either Oracle or SQL Server, we chose Oracle. I have a suspicion that
this configuration is either intended to maximize database access, at the
expense of recoverability or its the SQL Server version of OFA, or both.
If it is both is there a way to provide for OFA and also maximize disk
access?

BTW, I actually purchased a system with much more disk space than the
above, 14 18gb HD and 2 9gb HD.

RE: how to check BG process in WIN2000

2001-07-12 Thread Tom Schruefer

I would be interested in that as well, I was able to do that in OS2,
Win2000 should have caught up by now.

You can verify that the background processes have started though. Go to
the "Event Viewer" from the "Admin Tools" menu/folder (found in Programs
and/or Control Panels) and select "Application Log". BTW, as I found out
after messing with Win2000, these logs can fill up and prevent required
services from launching.

Where do the replacement files come from, how can one tell you

I have had this problem, it is a bug with the Pentium 4

I want to share with you a solution .
The problem is : On Pentium 4 machines , windows gives java.exe error

The solution is : replace the jvm.dll and symcjit.dll in the jre
directory of 9i db CD to where you find them on your oracle home and
  program files.

  Then the life is better..

Two RAID Adapters????

2001-10-26 Thread Tom Schruefer

I know I'm asking this question at 5pm on a Friday afternoon, but lets
see who doesn't have anything to do this weekend.

I have a PowerEdge 6500 with two PERC3/DC adapters, how do I get them to
work together?

I have read the docs and visited the Dell support site, but the
information they contain is rather unclear.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can give.

Actually its

Number of Computers * Number of Processors * MHZ * 1.0 Intel
Number of Computers * Number of Processors * MHZ * 1.5 RISC
Number of Computers * MIPS * 24 Mainframe Systems

There is a calculator available, the URL is way to long to email. Go to
the

that. Search on

Q: v8.1.7: What is the Paging Server ?

2001-04-10 Thread Tom Schruefer

Playing around with Win2000 and the Services Control Panel I noticed that
the Oracle installer installed a service named "Paging Server".

Now the name kinda makes it obvious what it does, or maybe not, but there
does not seem to be any documentation about how to use it. I have
checked the:

Oracle Docs CD
Knowledge Base
Message Boards

All to no avail.

I am a pre-newbe DBA, so any help you guys can give is greatly
appreciated.

Re: Oracle's pricing

2001-04-25 Thread Tom Schruefer

I don't think your far from the mark. SQL Server is cheaper and on paper
functionally equivalent to Oracle. But, for implementations of over 25
users you must buy a processor license for SQL Server, a license for
which there is no upgrade path. So when MS pushes out "SQL Server 2000"
(already on the market) and then "SQL Server 200x", and "SQL Server
yo-yo", while dropping support for Server 2000. You must upgrade at $20k
a processor, so after 5 years MS has as much of your money as Oracle,
they were just sneaker about it. For small work group use, SQL Server
beats Oracle price wise, but if you need lots of users online, the
pricing equals out.

>From looking over MS pricing model, it seems to me that SQL Server is
really priced toward organizations that have out grown Access. But MS
markets it as an equivalent product to Oracle. Maybe just more MS FUD?

RE: Anyone using CA products?

Oooppp I ordered one of those posters 2 weeks ago and it came today.
Very nice.

We have CA-Datacom, Datareporter, Vollie, FAQS, etc. and several other of
their products, needless to say our Systems Programmer has become
extremely adept at getting out of them what we need. He loves to argue
and pesters the living shit out of them until they give in. Of course he
(Systems Programmer) maintains that for Mainframe software CA support is
just fine, but when you get to PC stuff it falls off quite a bit. CA
probably puts all their support dollars into the Mainframe side.

RE: Oracle Licensing

2001-03-06 Thread Tom Schruefer

As luck would have it I was evaluating the prices of Oracle and then SQL
Server today.

My question at this point is, what kind of prices does Microsoft charge
for support, I was pretending to purchase SQL Server and noticed that no
mention is made about product support.

Using the "Power Unit" method MS and Oracle come out within about $5k of
each other, but when you get to their Enterprise editions, MS is just
under $20k where as Oracle is way out there. The cheaoest I could get
Oracle, with unlimited users (which is what I need). On a 1ghz Intel,
single processor machine with a 2 yr lic, Oracle Enterprise costs $45,600
(thats if you want support with your DB).

If it were my money $20k vs. $45k+, hummm.

I'm no Friend-of-Bill, but one has to wonder how Oracle can compete with
such a huge price difference. Is MS doing to Oracle what it did to
Netscape and dozens of other companies?

This seems to be the kicker. Its nice to be able to plan ahead to avoid
future pitfalls, unfortunately most purchasing decisions don't seem to be
made that way. A lot of times purchasing decisions are made based on the
budget available today and not how much it will cost the company 2 years
from now. M$ is famous for forcing users of its products, particularly
business users to upgrade-or-else, if they want continued support.

If Oracle could somehow account for this, like once a company purchases
its database, they are likely to stay and upgrade. Its the reason so
much desktop software is cheap, the companies actually make most of their
money on upgrades.

[snip some very convincing arguments]

Price wise (only), you would only pay half that if you got a box with 2
1000mhz
CPU's. Thats a 2 CPU license at $39,998. If thats correct, it a hole MS
is sure to plug.

Perhaps dropping their price and charging a bit more for upgrades, which
for Oracle seem to come out frequently enough. First upgrade is free,
etc., etc..

Oracle may also consider developing a much more user friendly (consumer)
version of is Oracle Personal DB.
