Analyzing a Trigger for Performance
Hi, I had noticed that one of our triggers is performing very badly. I had disabled the trigger to test replication and there was a issue with the trigger. When the developer changed the trigger and enabled it, replication slowed down to one record per second (other tables are being updated, instered, and deleted from). I analyzed the plans for all sql statements generated in the trigger itself and they are all using the correct indices etc. There are no full table scans etc. We have simliar trigger on our other replicated tables that are not seeing THIS bad performance. Any one have any suggestions/links for putting this trigger through the paces to determine the bottleneck? RE: insert nologging parallel/noparallel and archiving
Selecting from a sequence DOES generate logs. The statement will be a UPDATE to the SYS.$SEQ. I have an issue right now where we have a runaway process that polls the sequences (and doesn't use them), and it is generating SO much archiving that its a real issue. (still workging on it) I used logminer on the archive logs and the seq generates an UPDATE to the sys table each time the seq is hit. > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@SUNGARD On Behalf Of "Naveen Nahata" ><[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2002 1:19 PM > To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L > Subject: RE: insert nologging parallel/noparallel and archiving > > In the second case you are also selecting from sequence which might have > generated the logs. RE: Urgent : UTL file problem
I have seen this error when the UTL_FILE_DIR parameter is set incorrectly. It may be a typo, the directory does not exist, or the user hase no access to it. I have also found that if the value is entered in the OEM (at least on NT), that sometimes it is not properly read. So, instead, I also update this parameter directly in the initora file and if I still have problem, copy and paste the path from the initora to your code (amazing how many times this has worked). Hope it helps (I know you are on unix, but it the same thing I use both); Also, the directory in your call MUST be the same as what is defined in the utl_file_dir parameter (you may know this, but just in case). RE: Unix Script Quest : Urgent
Thanks, But I don't know the file or pid. Here's what we are doing: From an NT box, we are trying to run Sagent software to an Oracle db on unix sun solaris (both 64bit). When we try to refresh, we get a sagent error - OCI file not found. Of course it does not specifiy the file name. Using the same client, I can connect and run on my development box. Now, I know the username that Sagent connect to unix as, so I was hoping that I could run a trace on the Unix box based on the user name. But I am not finding a clear way to do this. I want to run the trace on the develpment box (the one that works), so that I can retrieve a list of filenames that the sagent process is hitting. Then I would want to compare the filenames to the directories on the prod bix to see what file is missing. Anyway, I am not seeing a clear way of doing this. I thinkg I'm going to wind up dumping the directories to file and doing a manual compare (ugh!) . This will will fire the trigger (and will not change any data in the table). I didn't understand why you want to commit after each row(?), triggers will fire in any case, but if you need to, you could do the update in PL/SQL. hth, Chaim "Lakhani, Vipul" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>@fatcity.com on 08/01/2002 11:44:16 AM Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> cc: cursor .. or i had a similar problem ... i wrote an update trigger to populate the backup table ... and i did an update the the master table to update a record back to itself ... update mytab set acol = acol; when the update happens use the :old/:new values to populate the backup table -Original Message- Sent: 01 August 2002 15:18 To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Hi, I am writing a one-time proc to copy all records from one table to another table with a commit level of 1 record. Oracle Installer not launching in NT
Hi List, I saw a similar post to this in the last 2 weeks, but deleted it (oops) as I am in a unix shop. But I now have a client who is trying to install the oracle client on his nt box in order to demo our *product*. However, he can't get the installer to even launch. He thinks its a Java VM conflict. Any ideas? I need this rather quick so please also reply direct to me and in the meantime I will hit the internet. Thanks, Hannah

RE: Cognos
I had experience with it once. Even took a training class. The project NEVER flew. I guess it depends on how your data is laod out. Our database was SO complex that the company I worked for hired a consultant to create the CUBE. after 4-6 months, he had a few erroneous reports to show and his contract was...ended We used it a little but not in a way that really benfited anyone. Currently we are using Business Objects to create universes for our users and it seems much cleaner and easier to end users to deal with. RE: Returning a COMPLETE record set from a stored procedure
Ok, then the question is, can I pass a REF CURSOR to a C program? That's my problem. I know I can do it with ref cursors lets say within a package but what if I want to pass a complete recordset to a C program? We have a programmer writing a program in C, wants us to write stored procs that return record sets to his calling program. Makes sense. I can do it in Visual Basic just by executing code into a recordset, but straight PL/SQL and C I am unsure about. > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@SUNGARD On Behalf Of "Jamadagni, Rajendra" ><[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Wednesday, July 17, 2002 3:43 PM > To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L > Subject: RE: Returning a COMPLETE record set from a stored procedure > > > You could return a REF cursor and then fetch from that ref cursor in your program. >This situation is ideal compared to passing (around) collections. > -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com -- Author: INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services-- (858) 538-5051 FAX: (858) 538-5051 San Diego, California-- Public Internet access / Mailing Lists To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from). Returing a COMPLETE recordset from a stored procedure
Ok, Maybe its just been a rough day, but looking at the docs (PLSQL Devleopers Guide), I only see that I can return only a record at a time. But say I want to return a complete recordset from a stored procedure to a C program, what would be my retrun type? Can I use a collection? The docs aren't clear on this and only show examples of retrunung a single rowtype. Any links (except to metalink - I dont have access) would be helpful, Thanks, Hannah

Hi, This should work. But I took the messier approach (I have 8i) and created before insert/update/delete triggers on the suspect tables. RE: Replication question
Andy, Consider yourself solicited! I am currently using Datamirror for our tandem db2 to unix oracle replication. The product was not chosen for our oracle to oracle replication for 2 reasons. #1 trigger based. #2 if the source transaction failed to be commited at the target, then the source transaction was actually rolled back. Has this strategy changed? Also, when I did my original research into rpelication products Datamirror products were not using log based replication. RE: RE: Advance Oracle Trigger Writing Advice
Hi, The problem is fairly complex and I am unable to reproduce it by manually feeding in the statements of the suspect transaction. Both statements hit triggers which use autonomous transactions to do things. Its the second statement that fails and I am unable to tell if something in the first trigger *primes* a tables, because when you rerun the transaction, it does not error out. We are using a product to replicate data from a mainframe to Oracle. The target tables in Oracle have triggers on them. When the product processes the suspect transactions, an Oracle error is raised. I can read the transaction in the Mainframe logs and I see that the transactions fail every 100 or so transactions (and obviously I did not manually feed in THAT many). I think that I am going to look into dbms_pipe, I have used that in the past to hone in on renegade sql:> Good idea. The triggers already both use autonomous trans and I am writing out to a table whenever I enter and leave a block of code. The last block visited befor error is a select statement only, so I am thinking that something reallly strange is going on. Thanks for the suggestion. I can get MUCH better control over things with dbms_pipe without effecting the code in the trigger ( I think that the commits can) . Darn, can't believe that I didn't think about it! RE: I/O contention with external process reading the oracle logs
Dennis, I was not referring to any one on this list. I was responding to the statement that Quest should run a benchmark on someone actual redo logs... I say, they might for a cost only I run Shareplex and haven't written full response to this thread yet because at this moment I am still iin the midst of Production issues with their product. But to expound a little on my statement. When we first purchased Quest, we were told that we would be able to do many things. We get it installed and then start to play with the *mentioned* optinos. Can't find it Oooohh you need Live Reorg for THAT option.. Happened so many times with supposed *features* that I can't count it and it has become a joke in my groupyeah yeah, so and so must have attended Quest sales training (when someone is being pushy etc). Of course, software firms need to sell their wares. Just like Oracle need to license (enough said on that one). But with this company in particular, it's always ... yeah we can fix that but you need another product product of ours that can that can do that etc. Now bottom line on the product as follows (as I responded to Tim privately): When they are GOOD, they are VERY VERY good When they are BAD, they are VERY VERY bad. They are more often good then bad. But sometimes a little bit of dirt can spoil the honey. It would take ony one or two extended prod down times to lose clilents (my companies clients) so a little bit a bad sometimes cannot be tolerated. SALES: always want to talk to the person above you. they get to the person above you. Then then want the person above them Got to the point that they pretty much told our Sr. Vice President that they only wanted to talk to our CEO. Uh hmm. We are no small company, quite large actually. So, CEO is OUT. Even their directors did it. But they are the only product that can do what we need with as little impact on the source , and no triggers (we are not allowed triggers on the source). So they won the contract. And when they are up they are robust and stable. gotto go. If I strip the tablespace params out of the statement and THEN run the statement, I get no errors. I had the departmental dba re-run the export using the exp version that comes with 8.1.7 and we still are getting the same error on import IMP-00015: following statement failed because the object already exists: "ALTER TABLE "ACCOUNT" ADD CONSTRAINT "PK_ACCOUNT" PRIMARY KEY ("ACCOUNT_ID" "","GENERATION") USING INDEX PCTFREE 10 INITRANS 2 MAXTRANS 255 STORAGE(INIT" "IAL 8388608) TABLESPACE "AURDEV_TS" ENABLE " Furthermore, I believe that the error message itself is incorrect. Here's the setup. The schema that the export was run on has default tbs of AURDEV_TS The schema I am trying to import into has default tbs of Users Both schemas in same Oracle instance. I dont know if it is looking to try to create the object in the other tbs as written, but the import users has no rights to that tbs. The object DOES indeed exist in the tbs but under a different schema. I found an OLDer bug as follows: Bug:617486 caused exports to contain invalid DDL for storage clauses. This fix allow IMPort to IGNORE the ORA-2219 error if the table already exists providing a way to import any EXPORT generated with a version of EXP suffering from Bug:617486 Similar but older version and different error message though similar behavior. Exp/Imp Errors: Tablespace Specific?
Hi, I have One db instance containing three schemas to represent development, stage, and demo environments. I occassionally need to *roll* the schemas as a release occurs. We have been using import/export to accomplish this. In the past, another dba has done this task (so this is why I ask the question now). Schema1 (dev) Schema2 (stage) Schema3 (demo) In order to roll out I did the following (after backing up all three of course:>): 1) Create export file of schema1 2) Create export file of schema2 3) Drop all schema objects in Schema2 4) Drop all schema objects in Schema3 5) Import Schema1 dmp file into Schema2 6) Import Schema2 dmp file into Schema3 Everything went fine except for step 5. I received errors on ALL of the PK constraints : . . importing table "ACCOUNT" 17972 rows importedIMP-00015: following statement failed because the object already exists: "ALTER TABLE "ACCOUNT" ADD CONSTRAINT "PK_ACCOUNT" PRIMARY KEY ("ACCOUNT_ID" "","GENERATION") USING INDEX PCTFREE 10 INITRANS 2 MAXTRANS 255 STORAGE(INIT" "IAL 8388608) TABLESPACE "AURDEV_TS" ENABLE " Also, had it added one trigger twice (may NOT be a related issue) - I deleted the extra trigger and recompiled it and it was fine (but it was weird to see two with same name). Also, received errors on ALL of the FKs (as the referencing PKs did not exist). IMP-3: ORACLE error 2270 encounteredORA-02270: no matching unique or primary key for this column-listIMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 2270: "ALTER TABLE "COMMODITY" ADD CONSTRAINT "FK_COMMODITY_SECURITY" FOREIGN KEY " "("SECURITY_ID","GENERATION") REFERENCES "SECURITY" ("SECURITY_ID","GENERATI" "ON") ENABLE NOVALIDATE" Then, err'd out on enabling all constraints (Of course.) My main question is why does it think that the object already exists? I imported using FromUser Touser. The only thing I can see is that the error also is containing the tablespace that is assigned to Schema1. Schema2 and Schema3 use the same tablespace which differs from the tablespace assigned to Schema1. ie: Schema Default Tablespace ** * Schema1 tablespace1 Schema2 tablespace2 Schema3 tablespace2 I am wondering if the error is inaccurate and what the error should read is that the current user is not assigned as a resource to the named tablespace. So, I am wondering how to strip the tablespace specification out of the import. Actually I am not understanding why it is there at all as I dont believe that the storage info should be there>? Any clues? Thanks, Hannah

Also, received errors on ALL of the FKs (as the referencing PKs did not exist). IMP-3: ORACLE error 2270 encountered ORA-02270: no matching unique or primary key for this column-list IMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 2270: "ALTER TABLE "COMMODITY" ADD CONSTRAINT "FK_COMMODITY_SECURITY" FOREIGN KEY " "("SECURITY_ID","GENERATION") REFERENCES "SECURITY" ("SECURITY_ID","GENERATI" "ON") ENABLE NOVALIDATE" Then, err'd out on enabling all constraints (Of course.) My main question is why does it think that the object already exists? I imported using FromUser Touser. The only thing I can see is that the error also is containing the tablespace that is assigned to Schema1. Schema2 and Schema3 use the same tablespace which differs from the tablespace assigned to Schema1. ie: SchemaDefault Tablespace *** Schema1tablespace1 Schema2tablespace2 Schema3tablespace2 I am wondering if the error is inaccurate and what the error should read is that the current user is not assigned as a resource to the named tablespace. So, I am wondering how to strip the tablespace specification out of the import. Actually I am not understanding why it is there at all as I dont believe that the storage info should be there>? Simply copying over the files won't work, since the instance names are different: Production: SID=PCLDB1 => e.g. /u02/oradata/PCLDB1/system01.dbf Development: SID=ROLAND => e.g. /u02/oradata/ROLAND/system01.dbf So would export/import the entire db be the only way? RE: Oracle 32 Bit running on Solaris 64 Bit
Title: RE: Oracle 32 Bit running on Solaris 64 Bit Is it possible that you have vendor software that doesn't support Oracle 64-bit? Before any decisions are made, I would compile a list of all vendor software on the box and also those used specifically for the application. Then research each vendor and ask if they are compatible with Oracle 64 bit. Quick funny story... a colleague of mine recently called a vendor to ask if their product (which we currenyly use in our system) was compatible with Oracle 9i. Somehow, the technical support person was able to reply with a straight face: Our product IS compatible with Oracle 9i.. but.. only if you do not use any Oracle 9i features... RE: I/O contention with external process reading the oracle logs (online redo logs)
NB_ RESENDING in plain text - sorry, Outlook keeps seinding in html no matter what default i set! Hi lists, I am using Quest Shareplex product for Oracle to Oracle one way replication. I have two systems (source and target) and two environments (dev, demo). On system one, the environments are setup as schemas within one oracle instance (therefore each schema will be a SOURCE in the replication). My other system has each environment set up a separate Orace Instances (therefore each instance will become a TARGET in the replication). I am trying to configure 2 separate replication streams (ie so that each replication process is SEPARATE from the other - one for DEV and one for DEMO). I will accomplish this by setting up Shareplex to use mulitple processes. HOWEVER, Quest technical support has told me that this will cause contention. However, I dont see why is would from an os/oracle point of view. Basically Shareplex has a process which reads the online redo logs. tech support is suggesting that is there a two processes trying to access the same block in the logs that contention can occur. This does not make sense to me. Below is the blurb from techincal support when I questioned their initial repsonse: * The reason you might run into a contention is because multiple captue processes may be reading the same data block in the redo log. Since there is only one process that can access a single block, the other process may have to wait. Contention is a possibilty, and you will need to run some bench marks to find out how much, if any, contention you will have. * I would find it HARD to believe that only ONE process can read a block at a time. If this were true, then OLTP system would FAIL miserably! Anyone have any ideas/comments regarding the OS and Oracle interaction I mean are not the logs at this pointa UNIX file? and can't multiple processes read a single unix file without bringing the whole system to its knees? Also, I am NOT knocking the techincal support, but I believe that the opinion was formulated on an incorrect assumption on the operating system and Oracle. Thoughts/comments? Thanks in advance. RE: ERD generation tool
I dont mind the PK thing, I prefer it that way, but it also inconsistently places migrated foreign keys on the bottom (this is just mdoeling, no reverse engineering). This is just a slight pain for us as we have a bunch of auditing fields that I like to be last for readability. Sometimes I can move them, soemtimes I can't. RE: ERD generation tool - Active Comparisons
Why? For consistnecy. I am in charge of making ALL changes to the data model, then rolling out those changes to the db. Our developers RELY on me and my tools for a database that reflects the model that we developed (Without Error). Therefore, everything we do here STARTS with the model (dreamy, huh?). And the developers agree with this as we can get literally hundreds of changes (this has calmed down now that we have our first release), and this is the best way in our case to manage it (one point of change). Now, I had been seeing some *weird* stuff creep into the model (inconsistencies, datatypes not being consistent from the logical to physical model etc). So, I spent some time going throught the entire model *fixing* the little stuff and syncing the logical and physical models. I ran a bunch of reports to looks at it (and got some of the wierdness that I mentioned previously like pk cloumn showing up a NULLABLE...etc). So, as a further TEST, I rolled out the model using the scripts generated by ERWin and just for the Heck of it, decided to do the compare and it failed. NO ONE was mucking with the database. But compares from model to db are useful for syncing the db IF something like that should happen. Think of it this way, copying a file in an editor (take Word for example). You may not NEED that extra file, but you would be completely WIGGED out if your copy was NOT the same as the original. Which was my point of doing it in the first - to test ERWin. It failed. RE: ERD generation tool
ERWin's not much better. Has some better modeling capability as you might guess, but has some VERY annoying quirks too. You also need to drill down endlessly when doing a compare and I have seen it see two exact tables (even case being the same) and see them as different. The DO have a MATCH button that I would SUPPOSE allows you to re-align them, but I would not know for sure as I get Dr. Watson's whenever I press it and the whole thing crashes! I had a nice BUG last week only. Generated scripts for the model, ran them on the db, then ran a compare from the model to the db. Darn thing came up with differences Furthermore, I find that if you work from the Logical Model (like I do), the changes are not equally presented to the physical model (ie name change./datatype change) and its NOT consistent with this behavior either! It has a report builder, but it doesn't report on datatypes entered on the Logical side (even though the datatype on the physical MAY be different) = therefore you can't run any consistency reports between the Logical and Physical models. I have been using ERWin both as a modeling tool and a change repository for the model. I like to run several reports against a model (I call them the Sanity Checks Reports) you know, make sure that all columns named the same (ie DESCRIPTION) are of the same datatype, length, etc. Anyhow, I can rant and rant. ERWin's BIGGEST Annoyance is my book is that there is no UNDO feature and it is rather easy to accidentally drop and drag either a relationship or field when re-aligning the model.. ugh I wish we could get together a group and benchmark some relatively unknown but stable modeling tool who's maker will listen to the DBA community and put their name in the market (IE. give them market share) in exchange for giving our community a tool that would actually work for us and work well! Rant over now. RE: Database Normalization-Outdated?
Title: RE: Database Normalization-Outdated? I Admin'ed a vendor app that was built similar to this (and the UI was in Designer - made me not think kindly of Oracle duh-velopment environments). Except that they had more tables to contain all the CODES. I always referred to this nightmare application's db as being SUPER-ASSOCIATIVE. This app went as far as in the CODE tables, having the ID , CODE and table that this code belonged to. WHAT a nightmare. It was a very complicated app (had to due with auditing for governmental reporting purposes in the Pharma industry). They tried to throw COGNOS on top of it to do business analysis and the whole project became the LEAD AIRPLANE. Because the way that tables were designed, it was practically impossible to create an effective CUBE for business analysis. In this app, not only did you need to do a select distinct, but further join it. I once had to write a query linking 17 tables what a mess. Should have been 2-3 tables at max. They (the vendor) was trying to be flexible to allow each client full customization... unfortunately supporting it was a nightmare (my Trial by fire app:>). But I would be WARY of changing DB philosophy based on one consultant's view. I would try to find some case studies. Also, ask for references from his former clients and CALL THEM. Ask them how this how impacted their development, business analysis etc. Also wonder about any business analysis tools that one would want to implement (Ie. Cognos, Business Objects) will this NEW fangled design play nice nice with the tools that are currently out there. I would want to see a small demo using business data (ie. prototype) and run some *run of the mill* queries on it and compare performance to an equal but normalized desing. IE. Create a small Customer design using both, popluate, then benchmark. Hannah PS. I'm always up for new and interesting ways to implement technology. But it would take more than just the glitter to actually convince me to implement it. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@SUNGARD On Behalf Of Stephane Faroult <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2002 4:28 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Subject: Re: Database Normalization-Outdated? RE: ERD generation tool
Title: RE: ERD generation tool When I was in an NT shop, we used Visio (I know...I know), but given that I was not architecting at the time, I can't compare with the Erwin that I am using now. I remember at the time though, the ERDs created using Visio were accurate for what we were doing (just documenting DBs). Its CHEAP compared to the *real* tools, like ERWin and will generate ERDs from several sources. Title: RE: Oracle ODBC On Windows95 (Don't ask) :) Are you just trying to setup an ODBC conenction? In Control Panel, you should see an icon for an ODBC manager where you can add dns entries . You STILL will need to install Oracle client. Use the db alias name for the Service name in the ODBC setup. On 95, I believe that there are 2 sets of Oracle ODBC drivers, one put out by Oracle and the other by Microsoft. funny but I remember we had to use the Microsoft drivers because we had problems with the Oracle ones. Log on denied.... from script: Urgent - Pre-production Testing
Hi, We have an ETL script that logs onto the db. The scripts usually runs without error. During pre-production testing, we rec'd a logon denied error message. We re-ran the scripts and all was fine. I did not see anything in the alert log, only message for today was a redo log roll. Can anyone point me in the direction to troubleshoot this issue. We are in the testing phase of a system that is scheduled to go live and I am not preparded to allow this type of thing to slip by. Are there some other misc log either on Unix or Oracle that I can check to see what may have happed? I am running Oracle 8.1.7. on Sun Solaris 8 (both 64 bit).
