where should i start to learn to become a DBA?
Hi DBAs! I'm working as a System Programmer for only one year. And i'm interested to Oracle, wish to become DBA like you guys. I did read some Oracle reference books, searching the web to find more about Oracle, and of course, here in this list, reading you guys' experiences for already few months. I've keep trying to learn the Oracle by myself(good or bad?). When face problems, trying to play around myself here and there in Oracle, RTFM, FAQs...anything that can find the similar problem. To be honest, i don't think i learn much. Maybe it's because i don't know the proper way to learn it. Well...i don't read books page by page, i only read those i'm curious at the beginning. But i feel i'm getting confusing. I don't know whether i'm going in the correct way. It's so many times that i have to reinstall the Oracle. ('Cos i dun know how to make it running again, a lot of errors.) So, can you guys give me some advices of which section should i start as a beginner? What's the next? and so on...and so on... Or any links to point to? mm...I'm playing with Oracle 8.1.6 in Win2000 on my PC. Sometimes...play around with Oracle 8.0.5 on Linux(Which is corporate DB Server, shh...) Thanks for any advices. Have a nice day!
TO_CHAR got one space in front
Hi all, Have you guys ever try this before: 1* select to_char(1.6,'0.') from dualSQL> / TO_CHAR(1.6--- 1.6000 Notice that got one space in front of "1.6000"? I'm using Oracle 8.0.5 in Linux. Thanks in advance.
ORA-12638 error
hai...DBA, i'm a newcomer for Oracle Enterprise Edition. i used to learn Personal Edition 8.1.6 before. now i'm facing a problem in Enterprise Edition 8.1.6 on Win2000 Advance Server. It worked fine before then suddenly, when i attempt to login, no matter it's SQLPlus, EMS, DBA Studio, it's just returned this error message: ORA-12638 Credential retrieval failed so i can't login and can't start the oracle. i referred to Oracle error code description, it say, Cause: The authentication service failed to retrieve credentials of a user. Action: Enable tracing to determine the exact error. so, what should i do? enable tracing for what? Listener? thanks and hav a nice day.
Management Server
good day, DBA... i'm now self-learning Oracle 8.1.6 Enterprise Edition. using Oracle8.1.6 on Win2000 Advance Server, and the Oracle Management Server also in the same machine. after i faced the problem of ORA-12638 when attempt to login, the Management Server failed to run.(even the Service). now the error ORA-12638 is fixed by changing a line in sqlnet.ora. yet i still cant start the Management Server Service. when i check the "Event Viewer", it say, The service has terminated abnormally. See the file D:\Oracle\PODB\sysman\log\OMS.log for details. and this: No login credentials were provided. The service cannot start. so, what's wrong with this? pls help. thanks and hav a nice day.
Re: Management Server
i did run the Configuration Assistant to create repository. it's up and run before... after the error ORA-12638. the service failed to start. regards.
Re: Management Server
well i did run the Enterprise Manager Configuration Assistant to create an repository. it worked find be4. but after the error ORA-12638 came out. then it's dead. cant start the service. even if i solved the ORA-12638 by help of another DBA, it's still the same. regards. -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com -- Author: shuan INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services-- (858) 538-5051 FAX: (858) 538-5051 San Diego, California-- Public Internet access / Mailing Lists To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from). memory resource...
hi, DBAs... i'm using Win2000 Advance Server, with Oracle Enterprise Edition 8.1.6. by using task manager, i found tat the ORACLE.EXE is using about 58,556K memory for one db, which is start manually. and ORACLE.EXE for another db is only about 10,000K, which is start automatically when server start. is it that problem of manually start? how can i reduce the memory resource used by oracle? thanks... and hav a nice day.
Re: memory resource...
hi! john... while i installed the first db, it only consumes 10,000~20,000K memory. after the error occurred(ORA-12638, which solved now), it becomes memory sucker. that's why i'm curious about it. and..i'm learning oracle, so my pc will b quite slow if oracle consumes too many memory. and i didnt change any setting for init file. so i feel strange why it changed itself. thanks for ur answer. good day and hav a nice day. - Original Message - From: orantdba To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2002 11:10 AM Subject: Re: memory resource... Hi Shuan,This has nothing to do with how your service is started and everything to do with the value of the initiazation paramaters that are used to start the database. The simple answer is that you can get oracle to use less memory by reducing the value of theseparameters. The most likely culprits, db_block_buffers, shared_pool_size,sort_area_size and log_buffer_size. However you didn't mentioned why you wantthem to be smaller. It is possible they were set by the previous dba at these valuesto maximize performance of the system. Setting them smaller could negatively effect performance. Why do you want to make these smaller?JOhn[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hi, DBAs... i'm using Win2000 Advance Server, with Oracle Enterprise Edition 8.1.6. by using task manager, i found tat the ORACLE.EXE is using about 58,556K memory for one db, which is start manually. and ORACLE.EXE for another db is only about 10,000K, which is start automatically when server start. is it that problem of manually start? how can i reduce the memory resource used by oracle? thanks... and hav a nice day.
