I've got 8.1.7 running fine on a Celeron (P3?) with Win2k.  I
just did a install out-of-the-box and it ran fine. You might
run the task manager and observe what's running on the system
as you install.

Just my $0.02.

I know there have been issues installing 9i on P4 boxes, but does anyone
know why I would not be able to start the 8.1.7 Oracle Installer on W2K

after a few seconds, the CD drive winds down.

The 8.1.5 CD I have works OK. The installer starts normally.

I know the hardware and the CD media I'm using are good, as they work OK

I'm wondering if I need to upgrade or change the Java Environment on this

RE: Installing 8i on Windows 2000 Server / Pentium 4

2002-02-13 Thread Reardon, Bruce (CALBBAY)

Bill,
I was just looking into this yesterday and just for info, the note now includes 3
workarounds, I've included the 3rd workaround below:

Workaround 3:
If you continue to experience any of the symptoms after performing either of
the workarounds above, follow these steps:

 1. Copy the contents of the \install directory to a temporary directory on
your harddisk.

 2. Search for all copies of the 'symcjit.dll' file, and rename them to
symcjit.old'.

 3. Go to the \install directory and open the 'oraparam.ini' file for
editing.
Please note this file is write-protected.

 4. Change the JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS parameter to

 JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit -ms16m -mx32m

 5. Save the oraparam.ini file.

 6. Start the installation again.

Change Record
~~~
This alert was modified 23-January-2002 by adding Workaround 3, and it was edited
to improve clarity.
This alert was modified 14-May-2001 by modifying the
versions affected section to a generic RDBMS version and adding a simplified
workaround.
This alert was modified 16-January-2001 by specifying specific Oracle
Universal Installer Versions in the the Versions Affected section.
Bruce Reardon
Hi
Can't help you there, but I recently installed Oracle9i on a P4 machine and
expected the worst. Things actually went very smooth, no prob's whatsoever.
Just the normal OK...OKOKOK...FINISH install. So the later versions
of oracle  9i for W2K must be fixed.
RE: Installing 8i on Windows 2000 Server / Pentium 4
2002-02-13 Thread Mark Leith
The issue is with the Symantec Java Just in Time (symcjit) dll and your P4
machine most probably. Copy the contents of the CDs to your hard drive, then
search these directories for the symcjit.dll file, and replace every
occurrence of it - there should be 2-3 of them. Then either run the install
from your hard drive, or burn a new set of CDs to use, or store..
The initial splash screen isn't Java, but the rest of the installer is..
I've attached a copy of the dll for you.
