RE: RE: OCP 9i New Features for DBAs

2003-11-21 Thread Dunscombe, Chris
Jared,

I didn't make a detailed list but where I clearly noticed the inaccuracies
was in the sample exam questions at the back of the book e.g.

In which version of Oracle was hash partitioning introduced?

A) 7
B) 8
C) 8i
D) 9i

Answer D. The real answer as we know is C.

Which statement is true about the TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE datatype?

A) It represents absolute time.
B) In addition to the date and time, you can store the time zone
displacement (offset), which requires additional bytes of storage.
C) In addition to the date and time, you can store the time zone
displacement (offset), without consuming additional bytes of storage.
D) You can use the NLS_TIMESTAMP_TZ_FORMAT initialisation parameter to
specify the default timestamp format for retrieval.

Answer C. The real answer is B.

What this means is that you need to checkout the answers when marking
yourself just to be on the safe side. I must point out that on a couple of
occaisions the book was right when I initially thought it was wrong.

Cheers,

Chris

Ryan,

I took my exam yesterday and passed!! I used the Oracle Press - OCP Oracle
9i Database: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide book. Even though
there are a number of inaccuracies it was good preparation especially the
sample exams it provides. Regarding 9.2 vs 9.0 content in the exam it all
seemed to be 9.0.

Hope all goes well when you take your exam.

Yeah, tell me, too!

I'm about to teach a 5-day course for passing OCP

this time, I just have to change my way of thinking for then ;)

RE: RE: OCP Architecture question

2003-08-15 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Ryan
I have found the actual OCP questions to be clearer. I think it is very
hard to develop a good multiple choice exam. And these are tricky because
the objective is to test more than simple memorization. You need to
administer it to many people and find out which questions aren't clear or
are easily misinterpreted. Oracle has the resources to do that, an
individual author isn't. My claim is that if you have mastered the material
enough to point out flaws with your preparation materials, dude you're ready
to pass the exam.

Ryan,

I will
research the answer but I have an urgent question.

Do you
have SelfTest Software for the SQL and PL/SQL test or do you have the
Architecure and Administration SelfTest Software?

Which Three methods can be used to avoid snapshot

  1. User larger extents
  2. Increase MAXEXTENTS for existing rollback
  segments
  3. Create rollback segments with higher optimal
  values
  4. Create rollback segments iwth high
  minextents
  5. Run long queries when transaction processing
  is high.

Ruling out 5 is obvious. The test says its.

Title: Re: OCP Architecture question

With respect to evaluating answer number
one, it’s a bad question, because you have know way to know whether the
context is supposed to be

a)
assume a fixed rollback
segment size, but use fewer, larger extents; or

b)
make the rollback segment
larger by using the same number of larger extents.

In context (a), #1 is a bad answer. In
context (b), it’s a better answer, but it’s still poor.

The thing that really chaps me about stupid
certification questions like this is that no answer among the choices listed is
really the right thing for you to try to do, which is:

FIX THE QUERY THAT’S
TAKING SO LONG TO RUN.

In other words, make queries run quickly
enough that they don’t require multiple-hour-old undo blocks to produce
read-consistent results.

Jacking around with rollback segments is
just a kludge that will produce results far inferior to what you can achieve by
attacking the query problem at its root.

equals fewer ORA-01555, for most situations...

when you signed up with technet there should have been an announcement or a splash screen that gave you a discount code... you have to type that in when you register for the tests.  Don't remember what the code was, off hand, but I remember it was delivered in one of those two manners.

When you signed up for the exam, there was a question as to whether you had
any discount codes. It is the same screen that asks if you are an Oracle
employee. If you enter the code on that screen, then you receive the
discount.

John,

Just to clarify, that wasn't me that said you only need to get 50 % correct on the 9i
upgrade exam. This thread looks like it, but my message follows:

Well said Kirti -
Darell, you wil fail every OCP exam you take with 50%. You need a minimum of about
65% and up to 75% on others (don't know why they vary so much)

I didnt realize that you might be able to do the 8i one without handing $2k to oracle
for their class and taking the upgrade exams is a better path.

anyone know if this is possible? You only need to get 50% of the questions right on

RE: Re: OCP

2003-03-12 Thread peter . sharman
I think there are a couple of ways you can do this. Firstly, if you ring
Prometric and try to register for the 9i Upgrade exam. IIRC, they'll ask
you for your SSN and their system should reject you if you don't have the
necessary pre-req certification. Secondly, you can send an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . From what it says on
http://www.oracle.com/education/certification/faq/index.html?faq8.html
 ,
we're attempting to build an automated way of doing this. Problem is of
course that all the records are actually held by Prometric as an independent
body, so there may be legal issues with Oracle having a way to access that.

As for the 50% passing score, sorry that's just wrong. As you can see here
(http://www.oracle.com/education/certification/index.html?dba9i_exam.html

), the passing score for that exam is 70%.

2003-03-12 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Pete - You've made my day. We had some education money to use or lose last
fall, and the 9i New Features class was offered locally. I thought I might
be able to take the upgrade class even though I hadn't completed the 8i
route. December is not a good month for finding study time, so I shelved
that idea. I'm glad I didn't waste time cramming for a test I might not have
been qualified for. The 50% comment jolted me because I could probably have
made that without cramming.

I didnt realize that you might be able to do the 8i one without handing $2k
to oracle for their class and taking the upgrade exams is a better path.

anyone know if this is possible? You only need to get 50% of the questions
right on the upgrade tests.

taken any OCP exams prior to September of 2002, there is a requirement to
attend one 9i training class in addition to the exams. However (you'll
probably need to call Oracle to get a solid answer to this), if you can
still take the 8i track with no classroom training and then take the 9i

your least expensive route since the classes are quite expensive. The down

RE: Re: OCP

2003-03-12 Thread Ron Rogers
Paula,
When you completed the OCP exams, you were given a "report card" that
was stamped and sealed by the test provider with a passed notation.
After you have completed all of the requirements for the particular
track you were taking you should receive a certificate and card from the
Oracle Corp.
The report from the testing orginization had a disclamer that you
should safe guard the report a proof of completing a track.
Ron

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/12/03 09:39AM >>>
So how can you check the status of your 8i OCP so you can sign up for
the 9i
OCP upgrade exam?

This new certification test sounds similar to what Cisco does,
and Cisco certification is highly regarded among networking
folks, as you must know what you're doing to obtain certification.

As I recall, it takes a couple of days to get through it all.

Anyone know what the Cisco tests cost?

In the U.S. employees can deduct business expenses?

Here in Canada it is only possible for self-employed individuals (i.e.
contractors), with some exceptions for taxi drivers, sales people,
waiters/waitresses etc.

Unless you have a letter from your manager re. training not possible, I
wonder how many of those are floating around.

Hey folks.

I just saw this thread this morning. What a crime. It seems that the
only way Oracle can generate sufficient streams of revenue is to punish
those that popularize their software for the market. As an Oracle DBA and
IT Manager, I will not pay for any of my staff to obtain a certification
that requires such a ridiculous configuration. It just shows that Oracle is
trying to generate as much revenue as possible. Given the state of today's
economy, I don't think Oracle should be alienating their customer/PR base.

As far as the tax issue: If training is not provided by your employer,
and is required for your job, it can be deducted as business expense on form
2106. For education, the feds allow for educational expenses and some
states also allow for it.

2002-06-18 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

Here in Canada I was told you can do it if you have a letter from your
employer stating that they are unable to provide you with the training you
require to stay up-to-date in your field.

I asked my previous manager if he could write me such a letter, he just
grinned and said: "well, it should be our responsibility to provide you with
the training you require to stay up to date in your field..." and no letter.

Since then I spoke with a contractor here, who said that if I keep
requesting for training and never get it, I can keep the e-mails as evidence
and submit them along with my income tax forms. I'll give it a try, though
I give it a 5% chance of success.

The irony of all this is that I work for the Federal government here.

In the US one can put training on their income tax forms, but the IRS will
disallow it.

I think this change will up the ante for corporations that do not send their
staff to official training courses or expect that staff will keep up to date
in their certifications on their own time and money, a $50 book out of one's
own pocket doesn't compare with a $2000 course.

Employees in Canada can't deduct training etc. before income taxes, only
consultants can. I don't know if that's the case in the U.S. or the UK as
well.

Maybe more people will become consultants, but then again there is a bit of
a crunch in the IT job sector right now.

Soon we will be required as a part of the hiring process to make a visit to
Oracle for certification, medical check, and brain wash!

I couldn't believe that, Ron, so I had to check it out myself. You're
right:

Oracle Certified Master DBA Practicum Exam

An OCM candidate must successfully pass the Oracle Certified Master DBA
practicum after having completed the required OU advanced learning
requirements. The practicum will be conducted at an Oracle University
facility in each global region. The location for Americas is Chicago, IL.
The cost for the practicum is $2000.00 US Dollars. Locations for EMEA and
APAC have not yet been determined.

The practicum is a two-day, hands-on performance based event where
candidates will be presented with numerous scenarios that will require them
to diagnose and solve highly technical Oracle server related problems. Each
candidate will have their own dedicated LINUX server that is configured with
the Oracle server software, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and the Oracle
documentation set.

Topics on the practicum include core database technology, database
configuration, replication, partitioning, parallel operations, diagnostics,
troubleshooting, performance tuning, and backup and recovery. Candidates may
also encounter ad hoc database problems that they will have to resolve,
therefore simulating "real-world" database operations. Oracle tools such as
Oracle Enterprise Manager, Data Guard, Flashback, Recovery Manager, and
Oracle documentation will be available to candidates during the practicum.

Candidates will be scored on their ability to successfully complete the
scenarios and if they obtain a passing score they will be awarded the OCM
certification. Based upon a candidate's performance during the practicum,
they may not be awarded the OCM certification if they do not achieve the
preset passing score.

I think that the price tag is a way too high to start with, but the thing
that really blew me away is that the test is on Linux only??? It's hard for
me to believe that they won't let you take it on your platform of choice,
especially for the hard-core-Windows guys out there.

And I have to use Enterprise Manager? Give me a break - and a SQL> prompt.
