I avoid the log in problem... I just stay logged in all week. Saves
time in the long run. It is running REALLY slowly, though... (I was
putting that down to our crappy network) and I logged out and back
in... Nope... It's just you Matt!

Also ask to talk to the [EXPLETIVE DELETED] on duty manager.
Depending on your tone of voice, the quality of your expletives,

the support, this usually gets the things moving.

RE: Metalink: Pwd Problems?

2003-11-06 Thread Jesse, Rich
When I called them and asked about how they'd propose to keep our system up,
they replied with a host of colloquialisms I thought to be most
unprofessional. And I've never heard of a support line that charges by the
minute. Interesting music on hold however. Sort of a 1970's guitar twang.

Thanks for the tip, but I think I'll refrain from calling them in the
future.

having trouble uploading files with their web interface. I've
successfully uploaded several files and then when I try and upload
another file, I get an error that says the link I'm going to doesn't

to their ftp site, it works fine.

Another weird thing is that one of the files that I was getting errors

Anyone else have a similar problem and know if the answer is on

Today I found out that the OWS personnel can use 'Oracle Direct Connect'

One of our Developers resolved his problem, with PreCompilers, when the

There is some information at http://metalink.oracle.com/odc/east (or

appear to be working, you can't read them in your LINUX browser...

Yesterday I logged a TAR with them to mention that the OTN iAS security doc

Web master because the OTN forum wasn't working either.

OK, this is getting more than a little frustrating. Over the past few
years, I've put in TARs about the poorly-written HTML on the Metalink pages
because it causes certain articles to be unreadable in browsers other than
IE. I was hoping that the new Metalink (as yet unseen) would fix this,
until today when I read this:

http://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_datab
ase_id=NOTp_id=135677.1

Seeing that half of the article is double spaced and has margins asserted on
it that cause the code to wrap, I viewed the source:

meta name=Originator content=Microsoft Word 9

JUST FREAKING GREAT! What happened to Uncle Larry's Linux Mandate? So what
if Oracle is converting to Linux? Why should their customers use Linux if
Oracle makes it more difficult for them? There ain't no browser available
on Linux that'll read that article properly because it's a Microslop-only
webpage! GR! |

Browser-specific HTML is just a special case of a general issue of laziness.

OK, this is getting more than a little frustrating. Over the past few
years, I've put in TARs about the poorly-written HTML on the Metalink
pages
because it causes certain articles to be unreadable in browsers other than
IE. I was hoping that the new Metalink (as yet unseen) would fix this,
until today when I read this:

http://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_datab
 ase_id=NOTp_id=135677.1

Seeing that half of the article is double spaced and has margins asserted
on
it that cause the code to wrap, I viewed the source:

 meta name=Originator content=Microsoft Word 9

JUST FREAKING GREAT! What happened to Uncle Larry's Linux Mandate? So
what
if Oracle is converting to Linux? Why should their customers use Linux if
Oracle makes it more difficult for them? There ain't no browser available
on Linux that'll read that article properly because it's a Microslop-only
 webpage! GR! |

Browser-specific HTML is just a special case of a general issue of
laziness.

I was able to logon after supplying my username and password. Did you
double click by mistake and go right by the box to enter username and
password, or did you try to check the box which says 'save this password in
your password list'? You can't do that.

Just a couple of ideas from having these problems in the past,

Patrice - I got in fine. I noticed a message from Oracle saying that
accounts are expired after 6 months of non-use. Maybe that's your problem
;-)
Yeah, like that is likely to happen to any of us.

RE: Metalink gone to sleep ?????

2001-11-21 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

OK, Let's do a poll. Someone else says they have access.

Could it be the browser?

I am using IE 6.0 on my NT Workstation 4.0 SP6a and I can't get in. I am
going to try from one of the servers (IE 5.0) to see what the result is.

[...]

IE 5.0 SP2 -- no problem accessing MetaLink.

So it could either be my NT Workstation, or MetaLink doesn't support IE6.

Late last week I could access MetaLink, but I don't know if the LAN Services
people here suddenly decided to push IE 6.0 on my workstation without
telling me, will check.

IE 5.0 SP2 -- no problem accessing MetaLink.

So it could either be my NT Workstation, or MetaLink doesn't support
IE6.

Late last week I could access MetaLink, but I don't know if the LAN
Services
people here suddenly decided to push IE 6.0 on my workstation
without
telling me, will check.

Could it be the browser?

RE: MetaLink Access: Solved (for me at least)

2001-11-21 Thread Jesse, Rich

Opera is a browser that follows the W3C standards and is available on
multiple platforms, including MS Winders, Linux, Solaris, and Mac. Unlike
IE (say it like you've just jumped off a cliff), Opera can
render XHTML properly and according to standards. It's all on their
website. And if you're a paranoid security-freak DBA like me, you have full
control over cookies with Opera. The configuration settings for Opera are
like Netscape Gold 3.11 used to be, only the browser itself is much better.
:)

And to keep this message on-topic, the caveats for Oracle DBAs: Opera 5.12
doesn't handle frame navigation the best. You'll notice this in Metalink
when doing an advanced search. The Back button takes you back too far. Do
this enough times and Opera may get confused and crash. The best part is
that when you start it again, it'll ask you if you want to continue surfing
where you left off, in *all* your Opera windows.

There are also some minor Java/JS problems, but the ones I've seen are
primarily due to @%^@#$%# webmasters coding for a specific browser.
PLEASE! We might as well all have 80x24 terminals if we're going back to
that BS.

Also, I've been running Opera6 BETA for a week now. Impressive. And the
frame navigation seems to be much better now...

Download it. Now. Several times. Please. :)

Gobble-gobble.

YES, it is a standard browser...follows all the rules.

and so.

any special tweaks that IE has given you over Netscape or over the browser
standardare not supported..

Try it! My experience with it was very positive.

OK, I think I figured it out - had to clear the Internet Cache for IE.

After I did that, I could access MetaLink.

 Don't know why though.

RE: Metalink gone to sleep ?????

2001-11-20 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

Well, MetaLink worked for a while, but when I tried to look at another TAR
the login prompt re-appeared.

When I entered my name and password I got this response:

Authorization Required
This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document
requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password),
or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.

Oracle HTTP Server Powered by Apache/1.3.12 Server at metalink.oracle.com

Am going to try again in a bit.

I used to have a Spectrum +2? One of the little keyboards with rubber keys

I must dig that out for a nostalgia trip! LOL.. Although I am more of a die

OT -- RE: Re: Metalink Again, tandy computers

2001-04-05 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

I was in grade 11 when the TRS-80 came out. Our geography teacher had one
at home, but he brought it in. In our electronics lab downstairs that
teacher spent hours and hours working on his Apple IIE with Heathkit
learning modules, which he later used to teach us Boolean logic and
rudimentary logic board manufacturing. He was the best teacher we ever had,
including the anonymous, distant, uncaring university profs I went through
later.

We had a computer lab upstairs with twelve Commodore PETs, with ROM-based
operating system -- you didn't need to "boot" THOSE machines! Far superior
to the disk-based nonsense we have now. Meanwhile we were still submitting
FORTRAN punch cards which were shipped to the local university, there was a
week turnaround time for those.

The TRS-80 was a silvery-grey and dark grey thing with the screen part of
the computer, with a keyboard with black keys, if I remember correctly.

Grey and black text-only monitor.

Nice.

I think that was Radio Shack's heyday, when they made their own computers.
I never bought one, which could be indicative of why they gave this up in
the end... I think they lost focus now, people don't do electronics much
anymore, too busy playing useless video games. Too hypnotized. Re.
electronics, anyone seen a Popular Electronics magazine in local stores
lately? I haven't seen any in years.

They still haven't been able to improve on those ASCII graphics characters
for games, now they use all this 3D full-colour stuff that no one needs.
How disappointing. I wish someone would write an emulation of the old Star
Trek Arcade game, still hasn't been done that I know of.

aah, those were the days. When we were wondering whether to go with PC-DOS
or MS-DOS...
When Apple screens were about the size of a coaster...
When we were manually cutting the edge of our 5 1/4" floppy disk, to make
them 2-sided diskettes, to get that extra 160K or 320K of disk space...
When the programs that were written were understandable, not that
object-oriented modular bloated code...
When you could store a dozen programs on a single-density 5 1/4" diskette...
When assembly language programming could be used to write programs, not just
drivers...

I wax nostalgic now in my old age, I reached a new low of 35 years old last
week...

: )

I have a copy of PC Magazine volume 1, number 1 in my bookcase at home.

The only thing is we cut out a coupon that was on the inside of the back
cover, so there is a corner missing. The one will all those wooden puppets
standing on the computer, and Charlie Chaplin.

I remember standing at CompuCentre and the sales person telling me assembly

I am wondering whether now would be a good time to invest...

I think we are getting close to that now, but I say that every day lately
and the stock seems to be dropping further every few days.
