RE: RE: World's largest database...
Forgive a quick story on the LDS. Previously their hardware vendor was CDC. They were always tape-based, but decided to go on-line. Dedicated terminal at each location worldwide. CDC was excited, to say the least. Prospects of banks of mainframes, disk farms. But common sense struck before the contract was signed. The LDS decided they could simply have a PC in each location, and every few months burn new CD-ROMs. After all, dead people don't change much. CDC was crestfallen. Seriously, I understand that if you ever get into family genealogy, the LDS is a offers wonderful resources for free. Dennis Williams DBA Lifetouch, Inc. Ian, Thanks for the information about "objectivity". It sparked my curiosity and I looked it up on the web. One of the hits was a report by CHEP and their look into objectivity. If you know of a contact at CHEP you might question them and how they handled their database problems. They are a user of Oracle and were looking for an Oracle DBA with tera-byte experience a while back. RE: RE: World's largest database...
The 0.5 petabyte database at SLAC does not use Oracle; it uses Objectivity. Objectivity is a small company which makes an OODB. When the project started there was no way that Oracle could possibly handle this. It is still doubtful: Oracle does not truly support Hierarchical Storage Systems; using one huge RAC ties limits your machine vendors; some limits such as 64,000 partitions probably need to be increased. CERN is however very interested in using Oracle for their Large Hadronic Collider, but that's about seven years off. That database will surpass BABAR's which as of 00:01:13 this morning (April 18 2002) was storing 549.6 TB has been stored in 324603 files. CERN's possible use of Oracle is not due to failures in Objectivity, but due to that company's inability to capture market share. They are hoping the problems which prevent Oracle from handling large databases can be fixed by then.I am also hoping for this, but I fear Oracle may prove to be an uncooperative prohibitedly expensive partner. Here we have plans to turn up the luminosity. If approved the database will reach one exabyte by the end of the experiment. I don't believe the genealogy databases are even close to 500 TB. RE: World's largest database...
At the Oracle Technology Day here they mentioned that one of the largest databases belongs to the Church Of Latter Day Saints, if you can believe it. They mentioned it in a seminar which also talked about iFS, I don't know they were implying that it relies on iFS.
