RE: Oracle Training

2003-02-07 Thread rgaffuri
Whatever you choose, I would recommend a program that has evening classes over a 2-4
month period. Ive always been skeptical of 5-10 days all day classes. Too much
information too fast. That may not be an option for you if you have other obligations,
but its generally the best way to learn when your new at this. Id ask the following
questions of any training company and Id also ask to sit in on a class and speak to
students.

1. Do your students have real world experience. Not just the teachers. Since you do
this for a living you really dont want to be in a class with lots of total novices.
They will slow the class down.

2. Do your instructors actually do this for a living or are they full time
instructors. If they are full time instructors did they ever do this for a living? Ive
seen instructors who have little to know experience and cant do much outside of what
is in the book.

3. Focus on the curriculum. If they are just teaching out of a certification book, it
wont be as good as if they designed their own curriculum.

4. When you sit in on the class talk to the students and find out if they have real
world experience. See if some of the students ask alot of questions and slow up the
class and see how the instructor deals with it. Does he press on or get bogged down?

In the future, if we get a spam like this, may I suggest we add that person

Spam - Re: Oracle Training from InterTrain

2001-10-29 Thread Jared . Still

Here's the email I received this morning from Cindy Conners in regards
to my inquiry Friday when she spammed many list members.

It appears that this wasn't actually her fault. I know lot's of cynics
will
disagree, but that's tough.

I must say I'm a little dissapointed that so many folks responded to
her with profanity. I'm always dismayed at the number of people
that are unable to express themselves without resorting to vulgar
speech. Get a dictionary and a thesaurus and learn to use them.

I sincerely apologize. This list was forwarded to me internally without any
indication of its source. I assumed that I was to send out one of our
standard emails. This is my fault for not checking it out before I sent my
email.

I appreciate your response to explain to me my error. Obviously, many
people
objected. There are 137 messages in my inbox this morning that emails to me
were rejected by our server that because they contained profanity. You have
a tough crowd.

I was never my intention to harm anyone. As list manager, can you suggest
the best way for me to apologize to everyone and assure them it will not
happen again.

RE: FW: Oracle Training from InterTrain SPAM

2001-10-29 Thread Hallas John
Title: RE: FW: Oracle Training from InterTrain SPAM

I was not spammed but they rang me up just now. I played hell with them and told them how unethical they were. The lady (Debbie Worrell) said that I must have expressed an interest on their web site, which I certainly did not.

The real giveaway was that they had my desk phone number and knew the company I worked for. All that information was in my signature on several e-mails I have pozsted to the Oracle-L list.

to speed and I haven't got the budget to send them all to Oracle for
training. Any info 'for' or 'against' these training methods would be
appreciated.

RE: Oracle training vs IOUG-A vs ECO

2001-03-30 Thread Jefferson, Dean

OK, appologies for so openly showing my ignorance, but what does the acronym
ECO, as used in this thread, stand for? I have a feeling it has nothing to
do with Ecology, which is what I'll get a ton of hits on if I try to find it
with a search engine.

As to the comparison of IOUG-A Live! vs. Oracle Open World, I would opt for
IOUGA unless you need to be on the cutting edge, implementing the very
latest Oracle technology as it is released. I have been to both and at Open
World it is far too easy to get stuck in a session which is 80-90% vendor
hype.

But, Open World is much larger, so the networking opportunities are
certainly great, and Oracle makes every effort to introduce their latest and
greatest stuff at Open World.

IOUG-A wins hands down as an educational conference. If you want to see and
understand how Oracle technology has been successfully used to solve
real-world problems, IOUG-A is the place. In terms of an educational
conference the only better one I have been to is the Data Warehousing Annual
Conference presented by the Data Warehousing Institute.

I never went to OpenWorld, but been to IOUG and the presentations from TUSC were some
of the best.

Re: Oracle training vs IOUG-A vs ECO

2001-03-29 Thread Rachel Carmichael

Sarah,

Unfortunately, you wouldn't get to go to ECO this year no matter what.
Oracle User Resource has decided to discontinue that conference. ECO is
dead.

Personal opinion:

training classes teach you exactly what the trainers want you to see/know. A
conference, while it does not give you the same in-depth knowledge that a
class does, gives you a broader perspective on what's out there and how it
is being used and what does and doesn't work the way they say. Conferences
also give you the networking to be able to ask questions of experts. Many of
the people I consult for specialized knowledge are people I've met at one or
another conference.

Of ECO, IOUG and OpenWorld, I have loved ECO best. Because it was very small
(usually less than 1000), because you got really up close and personal with
the presenters, were able to find them and talk to them after their
presentations.

Next best (for me) is IOUG. Again, large but smaller than OpenWorld. No
sales-pitch presentations. A way to connect with the people who have
specialized knowledge.

Having said that, I made it part of the deal that I get to go to at least 2
conferences a year. which means IOUG and OpenWorld, since there isn't ECO
any more.

Rachel

Oracle training vs IOUG-A vs ECO

2001-03-29 Thread Sarah Satterthwaite

My grand-boss thinks that conferences are a waste of money and training classes are a
much better dollar value.

I probably took my last Oracle Education class about 10 years ago and have been to
every ECO conference except last year (and because of personal conflicts cannot do ECO
again this year). I have no doubt about the value I have received from ECO over the
years. I am probably going to get to go to IOUG-A (despite the sentiments of the
grand-boss), but would like to hear some opinions (positive and negative) from people
who have experienced at least two out of three of the above.

Which was the better conference--ECO or IOUG-A--and why? Perhaps I should be
including Oracle Open World in the list also. In the past I have heard complaints
about overcrowding at IOUG-A, is this still a big problem?

For an experienced person, how good are Oracle training classes for learning new
material compared to a conference? My memory is that the training courses were
dominated by beginners--is that still true? Specifically, we are getting ready to go
to 8.1.6 or 8.1.7 from 7.3.4 on NT and Alpha Open VMS. So the specific training would
be Oracle's Migrating to Version 8 seminars (a series of 3 one day classes).

In reading the IOUG-A program that came the other day, I could not find a single
presenter from Oracle Corporation. Does Oracle no longer permit its people to present
or is IOUG-A now excluding them? Where are the Oracle people presenting these days?
I have been to some dynamite presentations by Oracle people in the past.

Re: oracle training

2001-03-23 Thread Don Jerman

There's someone in Charlotte, too (dbBasics I believe) but we never use
them as all our programmers are in Raleigh. I've seen some basic-level
classes float through the universities and tech schools, but I wouldn't
recommend them for non-students. Someone at Global keeps after me, too,
but they haven't shown me courses in the areas a DBA or programmer needs.

dbbasics and New Horizons offer Oracle training in NC.
DBbasics is in Raleigh and Greensboro. New Horizons is
located in Greensboro. It may be in other cities as
well.

Hope that helps

Re: OT- Oracle Training

2001-02-02 Thread Dan Mills

Eric et al,

I appreciate the responses, both public and private, and have gained a
better understanding of the situation as a result.

First, let me say that I do not determine or influence the course of action
of my employer. Either the work arounds or work withins that have been
identified thus far are being weighed and measured by the individuals who
have the dog in the fight. I don't have a clue when it comes to business
law. I am just a curious dba.

Having said that it would seem to me that the intellectual rights (reverse
engineering, proprietary secrets, etc) arguments may not hold true in this
case and at this point in time.

Has everyone who has written an oracle technologies book in the last ten
years been published through Oracle Press? Do they pay license fees to
Oracle for the proprietary technologies detailed within? And who has
benefited the most from the volumes of detailed publications from third
parties and the resulting phenomenal increase in market share resulting from
the self-trained developers and dbas who bought these books, sought out
third-party training, and based their careers on Oracle software?

After having spent many hours in book store, perusing everything Oracle,
and having taught and/or studied my employers' course materials, I can say
that there is nothing in them that is not readily available in a combination
of all the third parties' Oracle books. Just common knowledge and personal
experience.

thanks again and for those who don't have to work

Have a great weekend,

For those that do...Hopefully you'll get Monday off like me ;)

dgm

ps. I don't have the career history to base this comment on, but from what I
understand Oracle had the better marketing team. Maybe sometimes the end
does justify the means. Can't argue with success. And several other cliches.

RE: OT- Oracle Training

2001-02-02 Thread Eric D. Pierce

Yes, exactly.

If you scratch below the surface, and ask "why" (in terms
of social theory), you may come to realize that in american
technical culture there are two broad categories:

 1) populists/populizers
(make products that are ugly, but cheap)

 2) technical elites
(make products that are beautiful, but expensive)

Basically MS = #1, and Unix/Oracle/etc = #2

Oracle corp.'s "organizational culture" is simply incapable
of acting on "populist logic" because such logic runs
contrary to the "value system" (and/or aesthetic preferences)
of the technical elites.

Neither "position" is inherently more "good" than the other
since they simply represent forms/expressions of different
perspectives that arise from underlying universal archetypes.

ep

RE: OT- Oracle Training

2001-02-02 Thread Nikolay Kumanov

After many years of working for the financial sector, please don't be too
angry at me for stating my opinion in financial terms:

There is a company A that has some software that it wants to promote.
Therefore, company A considers education and information as a "cost center".
Company A makes (almost) all tech info freely available over Internet.
Everyone is welcome to read and learn. Many young people, especially from
low-income countries (as my country) read, get some skills, get a job in a
higher-developed country and promote the products of company A.

Company B wants to make more money than A. Therefore it makes training and
education a "profit center". It makes it's source of technical info "MetaB"
available only to contract-holders with deep pockets. Most of the seasoned
professionals agree that "B" software is better than "A". But many young
and bright people find that it's easier and cheaper for them to learn the
(inferior) products of company "A".

Now the rich investor comes. (S)he knows that B products are technically
superior, but on the market there is A experience, free A support, free A
source of information. Therefore the deep pocketed guy(gal) goes for A.

IMHO, probably company B has better technology, but A has better marketing
strategy and market development. And I am very sad to see lesser
technologies come to prosperity. I hope that some wise guy at B would say
"OK folks, we are opening all the info we have, we want all the young and
bright people to have the possibility to study our technology, even if they
have not the means to pay for the information. We are providing an
affordable way for youngsters to become a B professionals". Could it be a
wise (and profitable) investment

Re: OT- Oracle Training

2001-02-02 Thread Dan Mills

Eric,

Thank you for the feedback. And I would like to address your points further
for the benefit of all.

1. My employer is contracted to teach for the local University and will do
so till summer. They also have an Oracle license which they are allowed to
continue their training under, depending on whose lawyer you speak to I
guess. One point was that this is a new clause in Oracle licenses which is
trying to be enforced retroactively in an attempt to halt future Oracle
classes under the current license. They can also contiue to contract with
companies and train under each companies' license. The school of course is
primarily interested in the discounted Oracle licenses.

2. The relationship has definitely been win-win from all perspectives the
way I see it. The oracle market in this are has benefited by having more and
better trained developers and dbas to fill the ever growing needs of the
companies here. The only loser here is Microsoft/sqlserver, as I have seen
many make the jump to the Oracle side. And my employers are astute
capitalists, always making hay while the sun is shining. No losers here.

3. A major reason this program has been successful is because Oracle's
training is prohibitively expensive for small companies and individuals
moving into the Oracle world. When my employer started training the ratio of
Microsoft developers to Oracle developers was in the neighborhood of 10:1.
Now I hear its down to 3:1. I have personally witnessed developers and dbas
make this major career move based on our training and their own dollars. And
they would not have been able to afford the time off or dollars it would
have taken through Oracle Education.

4. I'm not certain that with Oracle's core database and tools software
Division, Oracle Applications, and Oracle Consulting, that Oracle University
is the largest piece of their pie. If you know the numbers, please let me
know, but I would guess that it is near last.

I am sure that their are other small companies in the same boat around the
world and I guess to me the basic issue here is whether there is a place for
Third Party training or does Oracle University monopolize the training
market.

Appreciate any and all feedback.

Time for work,
Dan Mills

1st question: what exactly do you mean by "relationship"?

Are the incorporated dbas contracting with continuing education? If
so, are they making good money from that "relationship"? If so, I
would guess that Oracle doesn't see employees of the incorporated
dbas the same as they see "internal" continuing education employees
(even though under different circumstances, they could theoretically
be the same people in the same place at the same time).

For the uninitiated, Oracle sells (or used to anyway) an incredibly
cheap *unlimited* $500 (as in "FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS") license for
ANY/ALL Oracle products to educational institutions, as long as any
such licensed products are ONLY used for instructional purposes.

As you can imagine, this could represent a HUGE savings to the
educational institution, or put another way, it may provide about the
only way for such institutions to license Oracle software for
instructional use (as opposed to administrative use, where the high
Oracle license costs can be justified if Oracle is deemed "mission
critical"). {For instance, the +/- 25 campus CSU statewide system is
in the process of spending over $350 million on a PeopleSlop/Oracle
"University" database system -including some general infrastructure
costs).

To be frank, why should Oracle Corporation care? Their mission is to
be ruthless/greedy b*st*rds and make for their stock holders. If
the dba corporation does the same, then you have a "win-win". If not,
...oh well.

Sounds good, but again, ruthless/greedy Oracle Corp is mainly
interested in getting their slice of the $$$ "in question", and
protecting their self-interests. It is entirely possible that from
Oracle Corp's viewpoint, the dba corporation is trying to pull a
"fast one", and build their reputation/profitability/etc by taking
advantage of the "protective shell" that Oracle's instructional
discount provides via the continuing education institution.

Something think that may be important that you left out: what is the
extent of the influence of your community's continuing education
Oracle training program, and how does that interplay with the Oracle
market in that same area? Without knowing the answer, it may be
difficult to determine how Oracle corp. might, or might not, see its
interests being hurt by the growth of the dba corp.'s role in the
continuing education Oracle training program there.

OT- Oracle Training

2001-02-01 Thread Dan Mills

Good Evening,

First let me say that I am in no way speaking for my employer. The situation
and issue raised here, while definitely real and occurring in real time, is
posed merely for discussion and maybe just to help answer my own Oracle
question not found in any manual. I welcome all feedback, positive and
negative.

Situation:

Two long time Oracle DBAs, midway through their careers, secure a steady
consulting contract, incorporate, and build a relationship with a major
mid-west university to train students and the local IT community through
their continuuing education program. They have been successful in consulting
and training, through hard work, long nights, intelligence, and diligence.
They now employ a unix sysadmin and 12 oracle dbas as consultants and
instructors (WOOHOO), have published several SQL and Relational Database
design books through MacMillan and SAMS, and per semester, typically sell
out 60-70% of seating for their full range of SQL, PL/SQL, Designer,
Developer, DBA, and Unix courses. Let me also add that these courses are
hands-on Oracle training, not designed to teach someone to take a
certification exam, but designed specifically to enable the student to apply
the learned skills immediately on the job. They were completely constructed
from the ground up by the founders, contributed to by the variously
experienced instructors over the last four years, and are grounded in the
real life Oracle experience of the founders and instructors.

Problem:

Oracle Education, I guess now deemed Oracle University, has decided that
their *RetroActive* Software licensing agreement does not allow for third
party training. The local university, of course, is withdrawing from the
Oracle portion of the relationship, while continuing the relationship with
my employer for other types of training. Oracle is agressively pursuing an
"Oracle University" relationship with the school to offer Oracle training.

Question:

With today's shortage and projected, continued shortage of competent IT
professionals, can the industry afford not to provide the best Oracle
(majority database market shareholder) training possible, to the
self-motivated, individual developer and future dba (yes, that was me), and
the Non-Fortune 500 Oracle shops out there with limited new technology
budgets, who need to train their IT staff ?

Are we developers and dbas, who have based our careers on Oracle, or are
moving in that direction, time-constrained AND money constrained, to be
limited solely to the very expensive "Oracle University" training,
affordable only by our employers and only offerred during the day when most
developers and dbas are working hard to support their Oracle systems?

And personally, I see two sides of this argument and just want to see what
the community thinks:

Is this the best course of action, for the long term, for Oracle and the
Oracle Software community?

Again, I appreciate any and all feedback.

Good Evening,
Dan Mills
OCP DBA Consulant and Instructor
