[OGD] Re: Hormones

2004-04-20 Thread Steve Topletz
You can get auxins and gibberillins from Phytotech Labs.
http://www.phytotechlab.com/

Please do consider that using too much of the hormones
is extremely unhealthy for the plant and may cause
deformities. You must use them in the correct range, and
not all auxins and cytokinens are the same strength either,
some are over a thousand times more powerful than others.
I would advise against mixing it yourself unless you either
have expereince in mixtures and dilutions, or don't care about
killing the plants. Most of those chemicals are active in the
0.1% ranges. Keep in mind, these chemicals are also
used as herbicides, because if you go over the range that
the plant can tolerate, you will kill it.

[OGD] Cicadas and Orchids

2004-04-20 Thread Redman, Julia
Hi everyone.

Here on the US East cost, we're expecting our 17-year cicada species to
annoy us again this year by the millions. I know they can damage young
trees during their breeding process. I don't know, however, what they
do to other plants (if anything). Some friends and I would like some
sagely advice on if it is safe to put plants outside during this period.
Among us we have an array of orchids, bromeliads, cacti, and other
tropicals.

Thanks in advance.

[OGD] RE: Hormones, availability?

2004-04-20 Thread Redman, Julia
Howard--you can order it from a company called PhytoTechnology
(www.phytotechlab.com or 1-888-749-8682). I have ordered supplies from
them before for my home flasking use with no problem.

Also, if you wouldn't mind contacting me off list, I'd like to hear more
about your use of GA on tomato.

Thanks,
Julia

I'm interested in playing around with NAA. Please, recommend a chemical

supply house willing to sell quantities for the backyard
chemist/orchidist like
me?

Many years ago, I used to play around a little bit with indoleacetic
acid and
gibberellic acid. I didn't get a warm reception when trying to acquire
those
chemicals in the '80s. I need to get a fresh supply of GA. That stuff
is
dynamite for treating tomato seedlings through transplant shock!

Any help will be appreciated!

Re: [OGD] Cicadas and Orchids

2004-04-20 Thread Paul J. Johnson
Dear Ms. Redman,
The only thing that cicada's can do during their "breeding process"
is break a few long canes if the insects choose to aggregate in large
numbers. Their shear weight would do the damage. The usual damage to
trees is the slicing of the bark and twigs during the oviposition
process (the female slices a notch into the wood and lays the egg(s)
into the slice), and this is usually secondary damage when the wind
breaks twigs and thin branches at the egg insertion sites. Since
oviposition is done on woody plants, and primarily trees, your orchids
and other non-woody tropicals have nothing to fear in this regard.
During a normal emergence the loss of a few twigs and branches is
little more than some natural pruning, and provides little more than a
little and temporary aesthetic displeasure from homeowners and
arborists who bother cleanup the mess.

Sederia japonica is in the Vanda/ Phal. family & can be grown under the same
conditions with a little more ability to tolerate higher light & cooler
temperatures than most Phals..
Hoosier Orchid Co. plants scored well in the fragrance catagory of judging at
the New York Show this last week... you have an "easy" keeper, enjoy!
