Re: [OGD] message from Leo Schordje about new Charity Web Site - Vol 8, Issue 206

2006-08-10 Thread Bromeliad Queen
Dear Leo Schordje, I just found your message now. I did not ask for any kind of donations. I only asked for the names of the best orchid nurseries around the world. The OGDisabout exchanging orchid info. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. This is my volunteer project and I don’t need any help - donating time etc.I can get as much help as needed from the local UniversityExtension. The site is still ‘under construction’. It is a trial site to see if we can attract advertisers. It may work and it may not. In the meantime everyone who is listed on the site is getting a lot of free advertising. I am the one who is donating a lot of time and money on this mind-boggling project. The search engines are providing all the advertising needed. The site is already on top and listed on their first pages in many categories.
What is my reward? The satisfaction of doing something grant, doing it well, being successful and helping others. Our University has a large volunteer force. I am one of them. Volunteer work and charity are very important. I know the site will get linked by many Arboretums, Botanical Gardens and Plant Societies. I am sorry I have bothered you and the rest of the group with this web site. Very very sorry!! intellectual property is valuable. It is unreasonable to ask for donations of either without more information. What is the name of the Non-profit group that would be benefiting from my (and other OGD member's) efforts? Is your non-profit a registered 501(c.)3 entity. What information can be supplied that would demonstrate that this is not just another for profit site who wants to use content other people have worked hard to create. Give us something more than "Hey kids, Let's rent a barn and put on a Show" to mis-quote Mickey Rooney in an old movie. Reply to the group, as I am sure there are others in the group who would donate time and content if they thought this was actually a real conservation group. Leo

[OGD] Threatened orchids

2006-08-10 Thread Alan W Stephenson

Thanks Viateur,Below isthe complete
email to the Editor of my local newspaper and the reason it was sent. The
Shoalhaven City Council (NSW South Coast) isto say the least, a developer
friendly body and following a recent article where the Mayorstated
"Shoalhaven City is a majestic haven for thousands ofnative species" I saw
red (again). This statement comes from a man who described one of the threatened
species, Prasophyllum affine, as "nothing more than a bloody stick" and prompty
killed nine of them during the construction of a Leisure Centre. Then
heexpects the rest of the voters to think he is coloured green. I am
continually in awe of how this man can walk straight, given his lack of a social
conscience. He and he alone is the reasonmany of our flora and
faunaare disappearing, with his propensity to develop every spare
blade of grass within the city boundaries, which total 4,660 square kilometres.
The threatened species orchidsare; Arachnorchis tessellata and the habitat
of this species was converted to a Pine Forestduring the 1960's.
Fortunately it was rediscovered two years ago in a location which will cannot be
developed. Speculantha vernalis is endemic to the area as is Corunastylis
vernale. We are also blessed with Prasophyllum affine,Oligochaetochils
gibbosus, Diplodium pulchellum, Genoplesium baueri, Rhizanthella slateri and
Cryptostylis hunteriana. I am responsible for discoveringnew locations for
five of these species. The other three species as yet unnamed are, one
Calochilus species, (rediscovered inthree new locations by me), but only
six plants existin these three sitesplus two Prasophyllum
specieswhich I can claimas being newly found by me. All are awaiting
new taxonomic status and this will be determined by the Centre for Plant
Biodiversity Research at the National Botanic Gardens. Yesit seems like I
have bragging rights but it is also dammed hard work trying to keep them from
the bulldozer. And yet some who know me, wonder whyI am such a cranky
little b-d. Trying to protect orhids is like pushing snowballs uphill with
your nose. The full text reads as follows.
Alan

How pleasing to see the Mayor, Clr Watson is at
last prepared to recognise some of the threatened species still remaining within
Shoalhaven boundaries. In addition to the cute and cuddlies or fierce and
venemous we are blessed with eight orchid species recognised as threatened by
the Commonwealth and a further three newly discovered species awaiting
formaldescriptions. However, at the rate of development within this area
the children of today will never get to see any of them except as Herbarium
recordsin the form nofuninspiring colourless pressings or alcohol
preserved specimens. Unfortunately these are the type of species unsuited to pot
culture, as they are quite specific in their habitat requirements. No money
making WollemiPines among this lot, just a few struggling
orchidsawaitingexecution by the developer's
Bulldozer.

[OGD] Orchid Photo Theft

2006-08-10 Thread Howard Ginsberg

Unfortunately, those who post photos on the internet know
that borrowing (i.e. theft) of these photos is commonplace. The worst example
is people selling on eBay. Even when you tell them, many continue using the
photo. When you tell eBay, eBay responds they saying that they are not
responsible. However, under Canadian law and I believe American law is
identical on this point - once eBay is notified, they have an obligation to
remove the offending material immediately. Moreover, people guilty of this practice
such as Linda Parks and William vanVliet should be blacklisted permanently. I
have seen photos from my web site used as well as photos from the web site of Greg Allikas.

I am waiting for the American lawyer to take a class action
against eBay for this because, until that happens, eBay will continue to encourage
this practice and everyone posting photos is at risk.

[OGD] Colour perception

2006-08-10 Thread greig russell

Hi,I am interested in opinions on the
importance of "normal" colour perception in orchid judges.Since it appears
that all people perceive colour differently to some extent, how "abnormal" must
colour vision be before it presents a problem.

[OGD] SEC: UNCLASSIFIED:-Kingianum

2006-08-10 Thread Defence . TemplateDevelopment

Colin wrote thusly with regard to Den Kingianum Var.
Silcockii:
News to me. I checked with the AOC Registrar
General of Judging and it
is news to him too. However it is possible that a judging panel
somewhere in Australia has come up with their own rule but
it is
definitely not from the Australian Orchid Council.

Thanks Colin. The information came to me from what
I would describe as a credible source hence my consternation. If it's not
true then all is good in the world of Aussie natives (mostly!!)
