[OGD] grower in New York State (US)

2008-04-06 Thread viateur . boutot
"Jim Marlow...
stumbled upon some stray orchids while taking a walk in the woods in Newark...
More than 30 years after he first discovered the flowers, Marlow is now one
of the largest orchid growers in the state, with more than 10,000 plants...
in Chili.

He started selling orchids part-time 33 years ago...
He moved to his 2,000-square-foot greenhouse in Chili in 1999...

Epi tziscaoensis... won a First Place award from the American Orchid Society.
The purple flower is unique to Marlow's greenhouse.
He found the young plant through a source in southeast Mexico and is one of
the few people... with this species.
Its drooping purple flowers are similar to grapes hanging on a vine.
The plant stands about 4 feet tall, with clusters of 30 fuzzy flowers on
each spike.

And then there's the Lycaste, a dainty flower with the fragrance of apples.
The Paphiopedilum delenatii, with pinkish petals and a little slipper
pouch, is another of Marlow's favorites.
It was believed to have been extinct from the wild and was rediscovered in
Vietnam in the 1990s.
...
Orchids are now the No. 2 potted plant in the country behind the popular
poinsettia.
About 60 percent of the orchids sold in this country are phalaenopsis,
Marlow says.
...
Robiquetia... resembles a cluster of grapes and is originally from Vietnam...

Marlow travels the Northeast to orchid shows and sells about 75 percent of
his plants at the shows...

Some people would be reluctant to dispense their... knowledge, but not Marlow"

[OGD] Coelogyne flaccida: odour

2008-04-06 Thread Peter O'Byrne
Oliver Sparrow commented:

"When unmolested, it (Coelogyne flaccida) makes the house smell of old, much
used and fermenting socks. When watered, this changes to the odour of fresh
horse urine; that of several incontinent and large horses."

Oliver, I haven't any records describing brief bursts of scent/odour
following a rainstorm, but I have a number of records of plants that smell
of fresh urine. I described one species that smelled distinctly of
stale tomcat urine you probably don't want to know why I'm familiar
with the stench. An even larger number smell of old wet socks. One of my
colleagues more politely describes this odour as "smelling of
fungus". Oberonia fungumolens acquired this specific name because you can
smell it from some distance downwind, even on a dry day.

I've just returned from fieldwork in Malaysia, where Coelogyne cumingii is
blooming in the mountains. This species usually smells strongly of jasmine,
but one particular plant that I encountered on this trip had flowers with a
"rather unpleasant scent, like wet socks". It rained later that afternoon,
but I was miles away by then.

Cheers,

Peter O'Byrne

[OGD] Fragrant orchids

2008-04-06 Thread Alan W Stephenson
In my part of Australia we are well served with fragrant orchids. The best of
them being Dendrobium speciosum and a walk through the bush, usually along a
rocky escarpment in mid-September, is a delight, as the perfume is obvious well
before the plants are visible. Also attending an orchid show at that time, in a
hall rather than a large shopping centre, provides those attending with
something to remember for all time and be sure to wind down the windows in the
vehicle transporting those species to the show or you will be in danger of
suffocating from the concentration of that beautiful odour.

2008-04-06 Thread viateur . boutot
"Barbara Pierrou...
greenhouses.. both built from kits.

One greenhouse is primarily used to house the majority of Barbara's orchid
collection... about 250 plants.
8-by-12-foot free-standing structure...

a number of home greenhouse kits come with detailed instructions so buyers
can put them together themselves.
...
The couple and their adult daughter assembled the second greenhouse themselves.

Barbara Pierrou's orchid greenhouse...
free-standing, straight-eave model with a green metal frame and
polycarbonate walls. It's outfitted with a fogger, exhaust fan, regular
fans, a swamp cooler that cools it during the summer and heater for winter
months.

The fogger, heating and cooling systems are on automatic systems to keep
the greenhouse conditions stable. Each is connected to sensors. For
example, when humidity drops below a certain level, the fogger comes on
automatically.

Several small fans are situated throughout the greenhouse... You need air
movement because without it, you'll get mold on the plants...

The structure did not come with shelves...

The second greenhouse is similar in size but cost less because of its wood
frame...
includes a portable sink, as well as shelves...

if you're in the market for a greenhouse. The American Orchid Society... a
list of tips:

Determine your needs and space requirements.
Greenhouses range from large, elegant conservatories to compact window
greenhouses that fit snugly into a kitchen window frame. If your plant
collection will expand, get one large enough to accommodate the additional
plants. It's easier to buy something slightly larger than to expand the
greenhouse...

There are three major types to consider: lean-to, attached and
free-standing greenhouses.
A lean-to is typically small, about 6 to 10 feet long, with one of its long
sides formed by the side of the house to which it is attached.

An attached greenhouse is an extension of one's home that is connected at
the narrow end instead of the long side. It's larger than a lean-to, so
it's better equipped to provide more control of humidity, ventilation and
expansion problems.

Free-standing greenhouses... are unattached on all four sides. While they
are more expensive than the first two options, they offer maximum light to
plants and better humidity control. Price can range from $50 [!!!] to
several thousand dollars.

Pick a location in the yard that will capture maximum light. Avoid a spot
near shade trees or other structures that can block light. While certain
plants, especially orchids, thrive in well-lighted conditions, they should
not be exposed to direct sun. That can be easily fixed by putting a tarp
over the top.

Shelves should be built with convenience in mind. A good size is 30 inches
tall and 33 inches wide. Aluminum mesh or steel mesh benches allows air to
better circulate. If you choose wood, select treated lumber that is
moisture-resistant.

Consider heating and cooling needs.
A heating system is necessary in areas where temperatures dip below 45
degrees. Orchids do best in 60 to 80 degrees.
A cooling system is likely needed for a greenhouse in this region because
of the hot summer months.
Automatic humidifiers should be paired with an adequate ventilation mechanism.
Many greenhouses are equipped with side and roof vents that operate
automatically or manually.
Add a few fans to keep air moving.

[OGD] Ludisia discolor

2008-04-06 Thread viateur . boutot
"Ludisia discolor

Growth habit: An upright to sprawling evergreen orchid growing to 12 inches
tall and twice as wide. The leaves are oval in shape with a velvety look;
they are red on the underside and deep green on the surface with pink
longitudinal stripes, and they grow to 6 inches long and 2 inches wide.

Light: Grow in filtered sun.

Water needs: Prefers moist soil; water when the surface begins to dry.

Feedings: Apply an orchid fertilizer monthly March through November or add
a slow-release product to the surface of the soil following label instructions.

Propagation: Start plants from cuttings inserted into containers of potting
soil or by dividing older plants.

Ease of culture: Easy.

Hardiness: Tender; protect from frosts and freezes.

Major problems: Avoid overwatering and dense potting soils to prevent root
rot. Leaf-chewing and scale insects are occasional pests. Control as needed
with natural sprays.

Pruning: Grooming is needed throughout the year to remove declining leaves
and shoots that grow out of bounds. Also, remove stems of faded flowers to
keep the plants attractive.

Uses: Gardeners like the colorful foliage of jewel orchids, but they also
get a yearly bonus of attractive winter flowers. The white and yellow
blooms form along long stems held well above the foliage February through
March. These are terrestrial orchids that need a loose soil mix added to
containers having good drainage. The plants can be hung under trees or
displayed on shady patios and balconies, but avoid areas with excessive and
drying winds. They also can be grown in the home.

... native to Southeast Asia and Indonesia."

[OGD] Brassia question

2008-04-06 Thread Jill & Jerry Suffolk
Hi Lee & All, I can only find 2 references to Brs. arachnoidea. The first is
by Norris Williams Thesis in 1972 were he puts it under Sec. heading "Obscure &
Excluded Species. Known only from the type description and drawing in Mart.
Fl.  Bras.  iii. V1. 97 {1904 1906}
Eric Christenson's answer to the same question I had was a photo copy of the
type species of Reichenbach's description of the plant in Vienna . He also
mentioned that there was a copy in the Nat. Col. Orch. 1:53. #37. It seem to
have a different callus to most of the Brs.been closed at the front and a semi
circle at the back. I included his quote.
"All we have are the original drawings and text. There are no known actual
specimens preserved by Barbosa Rodrigues. Fortunately his drawings/watercolors
were done life-size so measurements are available. So, from Cogniaux's
treatment in Flora Brasiliensis:
arachnoidea - pseudobulbs 10-11 x 3-3.5 cm; leaves 20-25 x 5-5.5 cm;
inflorescences 40 cm long; dorsal sepal 4-5 cm long; lateral sepals 6-7 cm
long; petals 3.5-4.5 cm long; lip 3.5-4 x 1.5 cm."

I do have a CD on Brassias/Ada that covers about 90% of the known Species. All
of the plants are grown and Photographed by me. It is not intended to be a
scientific paper but 1 persons struggle over the past 20+ years trying to find
information. It is an interactive Cd were you control were you wont to go.
There is a index to find the species you are looking for and section culture.
Cost CN$30.00 or US$ pluss S & H.

Jerry on Vancouver Island were it is cold and grey.
