Paul, Please, don't shoot the messenger. Viatuer is only pulling out information he has found in various online news groups. He is not the originator. Certainly they have been scarce but certainly are becoming more available. Prices are coming down also. Nurseries like ours are now producing good commercial quantities in our labs. As you say there are many types and colour forms. Currently certain areas of the English countryside are covered with various native species. I highly recommend these beautiful plants for the garden. Re: [OGD] Orchids Digest, Vol 10, Issue 63
Hi there Jim, If you've got the time then I would recommend investing in a printer/scanner combo. We have an Epson RX630 printer with a flatbed scanner capable of scanning regular documents as well as slides and negatives. I think we paid about $NZ500 for it at the time (about 2-3 yrs ago) so they're probably much cheaper by now. Undoubtedly there will be other models available as well. We can scan in 4 slides each time and have control over the quality. I'm in the process of scanning in literally 100's of slides taken over the years. I hope someone will convert his 35 mm slides todisc. I am trying to convert mine for myself and our society web page. Can anyone recommend a slide converter that would make this possible. I have a quotation $1.49 a slide from a local photo shop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Re: [OGD] Travel to Malaysia and southern (peninsular)
Hi there, As part of the 50 years of Nationhood celebrations this year Johor Bahru (down by Singapore) is putting on a large open air international orchid show in Danga Bay, central Johor Bahru. They have invited us as well as another 10 - 20 other countries and regions to take part. It starts on May 25th and runs through to May 27th. I realise it is the wrong time of the year for you Lee but check out the other states - they may well have something going on. Goggle 'Visit Malaysia' and I'm sure you'll find something. I can check around for some contacts if you like. Personally, I wouldn't do it these days with all of the problems along the border ... radical religious extremists ... radical seperationists ... continued drug wars ... prolonged martial law. Be sure you have a known reputable guide in any case, even if you don't need them ... also read the travel advisories posted by the local US embassies in Thailand and Malaysia both. We have an abiding respect for orchids and wish only to experience and photograph the orchids in situ where possible. Perhaps we might inspire more interest or efforts for conservation. *Terima kasih *(Thank you) Lee Lee Bredeson lee at classicorchid com ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) orchids@orchidguide.com http://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com
Re: [OGD] thoughts and questions on greenhouse ventilation (Thomas Hillson)
On Mar 22, 2007, at 17:27 PM, Thomas Hillson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Mark, Unfortunately, I tried moving the air to the floor, but the times I tried it, my entire greenhouse went over 90 degrees, way to hot for my cool growing species that I like to keep no more than 60 to 70 this time of year. If I did not have a varied collection of orchids this would be easier, but I have over 250 genera and lots of hybrids in my collection. Most of them are Paph species and Paph hybrids, I also have a lot of Pluerothallids, and a heterogeneous collection of other things. I love the unusual, that is part of why I like orchids. I like the idea of more roof vents, but I want to work on a way to shield them from the north and west winds we get here as I found them to drive the cold air under roof vents in the winter. I had some roof vents on my old greenhouse, but I did not replace them when I put new lexan the greenhouse two years ago as I was looking to save heat and keep the greenhouse warmer. The problems I have found with my greenhouse is you want to keep the heat in at times and you want to get rid of it other and it is really hard to do both well. Any one have any roof vents with a baffle or other protection around it or any ideas on how to seal a vent better than the normal ones that just lay on top of the greenhouse. I am enjoying this discussion, I hope we can come up with some good ideas that will help more people. thanks, Tom Tom et al, We have had installed as a part of our computer automation controls that, depending upon wind direction and speed, lock one side or both roof vents on each of our three houses down. It is probably cost prohibitive for the backyard collector, but may be a solution. Being commercial we couldn't manage without the whole computer automation set up - we just need to keep a close eye on things making sure they're doing what they are supposed to. Hi there Julie, Miltassia (Mtssa) is a Miltonia crossed with a Brassia. Miltonias tend to like their 'creature comforts' so keep this one cool to intermediate. Re: [OGD] Orchid pot weed-killer
Hi there Dan, Here in NZ we have a product we use called Karmex. I think that might be what you are thinking of. I'm not sure if it is available in non-commercial quantities. Regards, Ross and Susan Tucker Tuckers Orchid Nursery www.tuckersorchidnursery.co.nz Howdy, Folks. I remember a while back that some of the subscribers here wrote of a chemical weed-killer that was reported to do well with potted orchids. I seem to remember that it was popular in Australia, and for some reason, the letter K comes to mind, too. Maybe it had a different name in Australia than it does over here in the States. There is an orchidist who has many pots with a lot of invasive oxalis. This gentelman has limited mobility due to replaced joints, and wishes to find a chemical that he can spray that will help him control the invasion in his orchid pots. Here's a quote from him: In the 80's and 90's Stewart Orchids in California sold Simazine 80WP and it worked, they do not carry it any more and it may be one of the chemical that are off the market. That Simazine name is not the one that I kind of remember, unless that is the Western Hemisphere's name for the chemical used in Australia. Who can help me out with this? Thanks much!
