[Origami] Origami sighting, mystery, and a birthday
On holiday in Venice this past month, I happened upon a lovely little Japanese arts and crafts shop, Sabbie e Nebbie (Sand and Mist http://www.italiadiscovery.it/ve/sabbieenebbie/ ). On the counter, with pride of place among exquisite handmade cards and fabrics, stood the 2013 Origami Page-A-Day Calendar--open to Laura Kruskal's Stand-Up Letterfold! The proprietor, Maria Teresa Laghi, was astonished and delighted to learn that I knew Laura and Margaret Van Sicklen. Signora Laghi also brought out several beautifully folded modular geometrics in red paper that a visitor from Japan? Korea? had made for her. She saves them for display at Christmas time. Anyone know who the mysterious red-paper folder was? Happy 90th Birthday, Laura! I am so lucky to do origami with you every month and see your latest creations! Re: [Origami] Copyright Infringement?
Just did some surfing on the, Ships To German Etsy Site and came across these two origami book that can be down loaded in PDF format for a small fee. Is this legal? The origami books on his site are here: --- http://de.etsy.com/listing/126869727/origami-magazine-pdf-ebook?ref=shop_home_active I've forwarded this to origami house in Japan. It does not appear to be legal. Best, Matthew
Re: [Origami] Paper thickness?
Anna and Malachi explained to me in there last messages how is paper weight measured in most countries and the particular style used in the US. Thank you so much for your help. I wanted to ask you, is there a way I can convert a gsm measure to the US method? Thanks! I think it's weird that there isn't a particular measure regarding thickness... just saying : )

Thanks! I suppose one could create a formula for each basis type of paper in the US system and be able to convert between them. I usually just use one of many charts online that provide an approximate conversion for the common weights. http://www.paper-paper.com/weight.html I found another site with the formula for Text and Cover weight papers. http://okpaper.com/calculators/lbs-to-gsm 1lb. of Text paper = 1.48 gsm. Multiply each pound of text paper by 1.48. 1lb. of Cover paper = 2.708 gsm. Multiply each pound of cover paper by 2.708. In general, to convert GSM to US lbs you would need to know/guess the basis paper type that it would be considered in the US, then you would need to determine how many square meters the base size is for that type, determine the grams per sheet of that size, then multiply it by the number of sheets for that type (500) then convert it to lbs. I think that's right... Most of the nicer online paper stores I order from list as a courtesy, although it is frequently an estimate or approximation. It is somewhat peculiar that paper thickness is not really measured, but I assume that a lot of assumptions about thickness derive from the weight, with similarly weighted papers being close enough in thickness for most printing purposes. Maybe someone else has some information on that topic. malachi
[Origami] Threadjack: Re: Paper thickness?
I used to ask what the volume of a typical sheet of paper is as an estimation question to introduce a physics course. The gsm and area of the paper are all you need, if you also assume that the density is about 1gm/cm cubed.

A sheet that measures 0.0032 inches is expressed as 3.2 points. If you Google this basic idea you will find links to conversions charts. Michael
