Re: [Origami] Craft Robo for scoring thin paper?
I know several folks out there have used the Craft Robo for scoring paper. If you've tried this, have you had success with scoring really thin paper, like tissue or origamido paper? I can speak for the Cricut explore; as I understand it, cutters are cutters. Using "De-Sol-It" I remove the adhesive from a light grip cutting mat, as I find the adhesive too aggressive for very thin materials Once the adhesive is removed, wash the mat thoroughly; dry well. I apply a light coat of Elmer's repositionable glue, a "glue stick" style product, to the mat. I lay the tissue on the mat. I cover the tissue with a piece of 20# paper, using masking tape on each corner to adhere the paper to the mat. I use a "vinyl" setting for the scoring pressure. This method has been successful for me; preventing the scoring tool from damaging the very thin paper underlay. Hope that helps OriFUN to all. Dianne

Re: [Origami] Methods for creating duo-tissue paper?
A few years back I had a need for duo tissue paper (2 pieces of tissue bonded together) and used my standard method for foil-backing paper... Anyone have any ideas or experience with duo-tissue preparation? -- JC If the goal is only to hold the tissue together for folding vs. the added thickness or texture opportunities various wet glues can provide, I use a repositionable glue stick. It glides on easily, with no bumps, buckles, wrinkles or creases in the resulting duo paper. A clean application with no drying time, the process in completed in seconds. Cut the papers to the desired finished sizes. Apply a light coat of the glue stick to each edge of one piece of tissue paper, moving from the middle of each edge to the corner. Aligning and laying the 2nd piece of tissue paper to one edge of the prepared tissue paper, roll he 2nd piece of tissue paper down to the opposite edge of the prepared paper. On first try, should you be "off" somehow, simply pull back the 2nd piece of tissue paper, and realign. Voila!! OriFUN to all, Dianne
Re: [Origami] tesselation / corrugation ? same thing / different thing ? (FWD reply)
Tesselation and corrugation are the same things or to different things ? in my opinion : Corrugation is a repetition of pleat that can be in volume . There is also the practice of Onmyōdō in Japan which uses paper and involves spirits called shikigami, where a spirit (or kami) is captured or put into servitude of a practitioner and can be kept in or manifested through a paper manikin. It isn't really related to origami as we know it, but presumably that would make for an interesting concept for a supernatural animation series using modern origami designs.-Joseph White David Lister's Paper and Religio* n in Japan. may be of interest. [Origami] Re Origami Tato
it's clear that it's a container, it's pretty much flat, and it's decorative. Is that all? I have the following questions regarding tato: 1. Does a tato closes over its center or do they sometimes also close by one of its edges for example? 2. Is a tato folded from a regular polygon (square, pentagon, hexagon, etc.) or are they sometimes folded from rectangles or equilateral straight triangles? 3. Is a tato's resulting shape that of a regular polygon or do they sometimes end up with sides of different lengths? 4. Is a tato simetrical, being its right half a mirror image of what's in its left half, or are they sometimes asimetrical? 5. To open a tato do you pull opposite flaps or tips or can you sometimes open it by pulling a single flap or tip? Can you please help me by answering those five questions? That way I can have a better idea to propose for the challenge. I believe if you read further, David Lister’s article answers some of the tato questions you posed ( http://www.britishorigami.info/academic/lister/tato_folds.php ) Also, have you looked into kamon-ori? It m a y be a name that differentiates the pinwheel type tato. OriFUN to all, Dianne

Thank you both for your answers. I know it's hard no to turn this into a legal discussion about copyright, but I'm really interested in not discussing about that. OK guys? I'll insist in that it isn't protected by copyright here in my country and that I do know this for a fact. Yet I'm not asking about this at all. I'm just asking if it would be OK for the institute to do that or if it wouldn't from your perspective; ignoring completely the perspective of law. If not considering copyright law, under the circumstances you describe, it only matters if you, Gerardo, think it is okay. OriFUN to all, Dianne
Re: [Origami] Use of my tato-letterfold by an institute?
In my country, Artistic origami is protected by copyright law but useful origami isn't. This continues to be true? It is my understanding that Columbia, to implement the provisions of the US-Columbia Free Trade Agreement, created a more restrictive copyright law (Bill No. 201 of 2012). The Official Bill no. 12 of 2012 can be explored here http://infojustice.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/pl-201-tlc-usa-implementacion.pdf I do read in the original Columbia copyright law, Law No. 23 of January 28, 1982, Article 2. Copyright shall subsist in scientific, literary and artistic works, which shall be understood as being all creations of the mind in the scientific, literary and artistic domain, whatever may be their mode or form of expression and purpose (http://www.wipo.int/edocs/lexdocs/laws/en/co/co012en.pdf) Incidentally, as it is often a question on this list, Article 32 of Columbia copyright law, Law No. 23 of January 28, 1982 allows for an exception to copyright violation for teaching...as does the US law. Re: [Origami] Does the original direction of a crease really matter?
So what do people think about this? Is it really so important how the first crease is made or for the sake of precision (and if your not that pressured to finish the model) you can make it the way you find it easier? Precision is not dependent on the absolute crease/edge instead it is dependent on material thickness over the course of the folds to be completed. As with any material to finished product thickness of material must be taken into account. OriFUN to all Dianne

Re: [Origami] Cricut Explore for Scoring
Turning over paper to score creases on both sides and have them align is very, very , very difficult, nigh impossible, with this technology. Without registration marks on both sides of the paper for computer alignment, or computer vision doing the alignment for you, it will be hit and miss, and mostly miss. Resign yourself to scoring it all on one side. Depending on the scoring I need there are several ways to skin the scoring cat with Cricut Explore. One way I have used... Create two designs within Design Space i.e. Create the shape and valley crease pattern, using the edit tool to precisely place elements.* Create the shape and the mountain crease pattern, using the edit tool to precisely place elements.* Allow Explore to score, then cut the valley crease pattern from the base paper. Retract mat from die cutter. Remove o n l y the scored, cut shape from the base paper on the cutting mat. Turn the scored, cut shape over. Place the scored cut shape into blank space created from removing the scored cut shape on base paper that remained on the cutting mat. Return mat to die cutter. Allow Cricut Explore to score the mountain crease pattern. When scoring is complete, pause and retract from die cutter. Remove creased shape. Fold. *If the crease pattern is particularly complex, one may want to upload an .svg image of the crease pattern, using it as a guide to overlay the valley score lines. Attach score lines. Place over the shape the die cutter will cut. Attach. Repeat in same fashion for mountain score lines. Proceed in allowing die cutter to perform cut/score functions as described. Another method...try creatively using the print/cut function of the Cricut Explore. You will find the die cutter's laser will precisely align itself. The smallest space I have scored is .125 Hope this is helpful. OriFUN to all, Dianne

I've created some (preliminary) diagrams that I want to share but want to make sure I give the proper attribution if the creator is known. -- JC I do not know the source, however, many diagrams have been around for over 20 years. So functional and versatile, I created desktop publishing templates in both landscape and portrait orientations to share information on my creations. Re: [Origami] The heart of origami
The question...exactly what do you consider to be the 'heart of what origami is', and 'what origami actually is'? Impermanence seems to be at the heart of Origami, reflecting the philosophy of Eastern thought. The striving to change the nature of Origami, even by calling it sculpture, seems counter intuitive. What is it in the Western nature that seems to have such a need for the (un)nature of permanence? OriFUN to all, Dianne
Re: [Origami] What's the right term?
So, here's the place where I throw it open to the list (or at least, those who have waded through this long posting): what do you think we should use as a short, ideally single-word descriptor, of the object and the person, and why? Looking forward to seeing what people think, Robert Generally, J.Q. P.'s understanding and by definition, composer/musician refers to creating/performing musical/verbal/auditory works. Designer/artist generally refers by definition to drawing/constructing material/medium works. It would follow that Origami falls into drawing/working with physical materials, hence designer/artist seems appropriate. Origami is a three dimensional rendering, thus model by definition seem apt as well. But...building interest with other creative terminology can be intriguing. OriFUN to all, Dianne

[Origami] Origami models in porcelain
I have successfully used the following recipe for forming Origami models: 3 pieces of torn stale white bread – crust removed 3 tablespoons PVC glue 1/2 teaspoon glycerin Process: 1. Knead with lightly coated glycerin hands. The mixture will be extremely sticky for about 3 minutes. The clay will then become very silky and move into itself, leaving no residue on the hands. 2. Roll the clay out to a very thin piece. The clay can be rolled so thinly it is translucent, yet maintains it’s structure. 3. Cut the clay into the shape needed to fold the Origami model. 4. Fold the clay, modifying that process as necessary for working with such a medium. 5. Allow the model to air dry...minimum 24 hours 6. Finish as desired, for example, paint with acrylic, ink, dye, polyacrylic, etc. Note: as the viscosity of the clay is altered, I do not recommend adding powdered or liquid paint, dye o ink to the initial recipe. I have used Sculpey polymer clay, however, it is very difficult to work it into vey thin sheets, hence the finished Sculpey Origami model is bulkier than I like, as can be seen at www.orifun.weebly.com OriFUN to all, Dianne
Re: [Origami] Origami models in porcelain
Do you have any pix of pieces folded with your special recipe? Would love to see the difference between the polymer clay model and others! Mary Ellen from AZ I do not have any pix of Origami folded with this clay. As I never have bread in my house, I must get some...will make something soon enough and post a pix at www.orifun.weebly.com There is a pix of a miniature sculpture of a head that can be worn on a chain on the Orifun Creation page ( http://orifun.weebly.com/creations.html ) In looking at that, one one can see the detail the clay is able to hold in small work. The clay listens well. That piece is finished with nail polish. Should anyone decide to try their hand at an Origami piece created from the clay, the recipe is ample for a 6 square. My preference is to use a glass to roll out the clay laid between saran wrap. Additionally, one must find supports with which to hold the piece in place until it dries. OriFUN to all, Dianne

Re: [Origami] Fwd: coloring/tinting tracing paper
Can you elaborate on what you mean? How do you use the glue stick? A glue stick is a solid adhesive in a twist up tube - similar to lipstick. The glue is slick, smooth and glides on the paper. There are many varieties - I use permanent, acid free. Twist up a bit of the glue. Move the stick over the paper's edges - well cover, but use sparingly (they say people often use much more glue than needed). Carefully align and place the second sheet along the top edge of the glued first sheet. Smooth the second sheet down from top to bottom (unlike wet glue - from the middle out). Should you have any warp on the edges of the paper, you have applied too much glue. A glue stick is the only adhesive I have found suitable to use with the shiny Mylar paper. Here is a link to a video I made on making Mylar Tissue Foil using the glue stick...the magic ingredient. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2JS95I6okI OriFUN to you KDS
[Origami] Origami Animation
A nice way to show how to fold Origami is through animation. Draw each step individually in a program of your choice. I use the *free* program Inkscape to create the diagrams, enlarging them to 200%. Import the pictures into Windows Movie Maker and create the animation. I “speed up double” the visual effects 5 times for each frame. For the natural pauses, I insert/copy the frame 4 times. This is my first attempt in creating an Origami animation, so one can see that it must not be too difficult to do. With time and practice it can be refined. View my first animation, Origami Waterbomb Base Animation, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBzaSXZa-Qg Inkscape download site http://inkscape.org/download/?lang=en Windows Movie Maker 2.6 download site (this older version is more user friendly, and works perfectly in Win XP/Vista, 7 and 8 - 32 and 64 bit - vs the newer version designed for Windows 7) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34 OriFUN to you, Dianne

Re: [Origami] what is this called?
Hello, I just read Paper Dragon's distinction between a windmill base and a squashed windmill base. From Paper Dragon's explanation, I understand that a windmill base is exactly like the windmill model. Being so, I wanted to ask: are there any models that start from that (non-squashed) version of the windmill base? I ask because I would say that a set of folds are called a base only if they are used for folding different models. I know plenty of models that start from the squashed windmill base (which is one of my favorite bases), but I maybe only know one model (besides the very windmill) that start from the non-squashed version: the Pajarita. Thank you : ) And then there is Kunihiko Kasaara who refers to windmill base as the pinwheel base. And Froebel talks of the base form...but I don't know if t h a t name is for the windmill/pinwheel or the squashed windmill. Froebel did much with what you call the squashed windmill. See Llan Garibi http://www.garibiorigami.com/creativelane.aspx?page=3a=true and Leyla Torres - scroll down on http://www.origamispirit.com/atc-gallery/and a few of mine https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=298205253641884set=pb.13572344233.-220752.1366762385.type=3theater Lister wrote on Froebel's work here http://www.britishorigami.info/academic/lister/froebel.php And from the squashed windmill there many modular projectscubes/boxes - which I think you enjoy Gerardo. Lots of fun...lots of learning...worth exploring!! Froebel's Star is the first and only thing I folded ... it was 35 years later that I found my way back to Origami...fond spot for Froebel.

Re: [Origami] Can everyone learn to fold exact?
What do you think decides if someone is an exakt folder? Is it learning tricks in how to control the paper as it folds? Is it a physical ability (as fine motorics) and therefore can't be improved? Or something else? Hi Anine Mostly...in my short experience...it is the paper in combination with the model itself...and of course the tricks and care we take in folding. So many variable...grain, fibers, weight, the give, environmental impact, like humidity and light over time on the paper and...is it really a perfect square. You mentioned tessellations...many great tessellations are pre-creased by a machine...so, don't beat yourself up on t h a t one!! Have you noticed how the same model you fold once, may not be as perfect the next time? I do. Even with knowing all aspects of the model being folded, and giving great care and allowing the paper in folding, with all the variables using even the best paper, the results will differ. I always remember...in photography, 1000 shots are taken for that o n e perfect culmination that we see...maybe it is something like that in the Origami models presented as well.

Re: [Origami] A strip of paper
Leyla asks - How long and narrow should a piece of paper be for us to say that we are making origami with paper strips? Would you say that this last figure is made with a *strip* of paper? Strips function differently - For fun maybe this can add some insight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B6bius_strip To the common folk I believe it may be perception we somehow innately know - lol the Phi in us :-)
Re: [Origami] Legally protecting useful models?
So after this long cathartic rant I REALLY need to ask you, does anyone know if I have a third option? What can you do if you wish to legally protect your useful origami model but aren't particularly planning to make money out of it? I'll be crossing my fingers cause I really hope I get a positive answer... as always, thank you in advance! Copyright absolutely applies to Origami models. Be advised that should someone infringe, copyright gives you the right to challenge it in a court of law...a long expensive ordeal.
