orion-list MORE IMPORTANT NEWS
Many of you have expressed regrets at the closing of the Orion List, and I too would like to add express my regrets, and also provide a little more of an explanation regarding the decision. The fundemental problem is that of human resources. At this moment in time (as it has been for the last two years) there are no interns here at the Orion Center. This is in part due to the decrease in Students at the Rothberg school (for obvious reasons). This means the Moderator (that's me) has more to do, and the proper maintainance of the web site suffers. All of this has been compounded by the preparations for the Virtual Qumran addition to the web site, which will double the size of the site and require more maintenance. This is even further compounded by my resignation (to be actioned at the end of this week). The overall effect is that something has to give, and it was the discussion group. My hope is that the list will be reopened in some shape or form in the coming year. My personal recommendatiion is that two lists are opened, one for research students and lecturers (that will be very carefully controlled with respect to who is admitted). and the other for general use. My dream would be to manage a closed discussion group that would be associated to a series of regular lectures (such as the coffee hour lectures, or the symposium unedited papers when they are published on the web site). This would allow the moderator to be more proactively involved in the discussions. The potential for the list is enormous but the workers are few. :) An alternative option is to leave the list open and unmoderated (as some of you have suggested), but I am absolutley terrified at the potential havoc this would cause. ...Orion-List Moderator. To post to the entire list, address your message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you are posting privately to an individual, please ensure that you are not sending to the Orion list simultaneously. Check the address header carefully. As of Sept. 1997, the list is configured so that the Reply to address points to the Orion list. This list is for the academic discussion of ideas and information relating to the Dead Sea Scrolls and associated literature. Interested laypersons are certainly welcome to participate and to raise questions. 3. Please adopt a courteous tone of discourse. 4. Try to consolidate your messages so that you do not post too often during a short period of time. An exception is the posting of sequential replies if a thread is particularly active but this should be the exception, not the rule. In other words, if you're posting three or more times a day, that is probably excessive. 5. Avoid me, too postings. If you wish to thank someone or merely to second an opinion, it would be best to do so via private e-mail. 6. Please sign your postings with your name, not a screen name. Geographical information and institutional affiliation are highly recommended. 7. Edit quoted messages. If you are quoting a previous message, please use only the relevant sections, rather than quoting the entire message. 8. Use precise subject headings. If the thread meanders onto another topic, then by all means change the subject heading to reflect the topic. If you are addressing several topics in a single subject heading, they may be included as a multiple heading (e. g. 4QMMT; Teacher of Righteousness; Apocalyptic). 9. Be brief. Please try not to exceed 4K. To stay within this limit you should quote only what is absolutely relevant. If you quote the header or other extraneous material, it will bounce back to you. 10. In the current discussion on Pliny`s and Philo`s Essenians as Jews or Judeans, one point is I think, noteworthy: The fact that Josephus feels obliged to declare that the Essenians are Jews by birth, a remarkable statement if we were to ignore other sources on them than Philo`s. From: Jurgen Zangenberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: orion-list Jeroboam/ CD 7 -- and names Dear Dierk, dear colleagues, thanks for your comments on Sychar. It is interesting and fascinating that the discussion on important Qumran texts brings us so far north, to a region that too often has been neglected. However: - Sychar/Askar certainly was not located on top of a mountain. The settlement is normally associated with al-Askar in the plain 1.5km northeast of Tell Balata (Shechem) close to the spring/well that John 4,5-6 refers to. Cf. Jub 34,4 and the valuable discussion in James C.VanderKam, Textual and Historical Studies in the Book of Jubilees, 1977. Pp. 218-229. - I am rather cautious to see Sychar as a "strategic capital city of the region". Strategic it was, but "capital" for whom? While it is certainly possible that Samaritans and former inhabitants of Shechem (who were not necessarily also Samaritans, cf Josephus "Sidonians of Shechem" in Ant 12:258!) lived in the town, we have also some indication that maybe some Jews also did: mMen10:2 cf. S.Klein, Palstinisches im Jubilenbuch, Zeitschrift des Deutschen Palstina Vereins 57 (1934), 20. - There is no solid information so far that indicates a direct transition of Shechem's important role to Sychar. No archaeological excavations were carried out in Askar and surveys mostly produced Roman pottery (which does not exclude the presence of a Hellenistic predecessor, but does not help to establish one either). We cannot say how large the settlement was in the Hellenistic era which makes it difficult to speak of a "capital city". The texts alone are in my opinion not conclusive enough to see Sychar as "capital city". - I think: Sychar was one of the many settlements in the plain east of the Ebal/Gerizim valley. Its importance lies in the vicinity of a prolific spring and the Tomb of Joseph. The surrounding region was of interest to Jews, Samaritans and Samarians, members of all these groups probably were present there. - Vespasian founded Neapolis over an older settlement Mamortha/Mabartha (meaning "passage"; Josephus, Bellum 4:449; 1:63.92; Pliny, Naturalis Historia 5,69). So there is much more habitation around than just Sychar. For more information on Sychar please see the discussion in my dissertation: Jürgen Zangenberg, Frühes Christentum in Samarien. Topographische und traditionsgeschichtliche Studien zu den Samarientexten im Johannesevangelium, Tübingen: Francke Verlag 1998 (TANZ 27), pp. 96-106. and the important study: Hans-Martin Schenke, Jakobsbrunnen-Josephsgrab-Sychar.
