Google launched a petition. Wikipedia voted to shut itself off. Senators' websites went down just from the sheer surge of voters trying to write them. NYC and SF geeks had protests that packed city blocks. You made history today: nothing like this has ever happened before. Tech companies and users teamed up. Tens of millions of people who make the internet what it is joined together to defend their freedoms. The free network defended itself. Whatever you call it, the bottom line is clear: from today forward, it will be much harder to mess up the internet. The really crazy part? We might even win. Approaching Monday's crucial Senate vote there are now 35 Senators publicly opposing PIPA. Last week there were 5. And it just takes just 41 solid no votes to permanently stall PIPA (and SOPA) in the Senate. What seemed like miles away a few weeks ago is now within reach. But don't trust predictions. The forces behind SOPA PIPA (mostly movie companies) can make small changes to these bills until they know they have the votes to pass. Members of Congress know SOPA PIPA are unpopular, but they don't understand why--so they're easily duped by superficial changes. The Senate returns next week, and the next few days are critical. Here are two things to think about: 1. Plan on calling your Senator every day next week. Pick up the phone each morning and call your Senators' offices, until they vote no on cloture. If your site participated today, consider running a Call the Senate link all next week. 2. Tomorrow, drop in at your Senators' district offices. We don't have a cool map widget to show you the offices nearest you (we're too exhausted! any takers?). So do it the old fashioned way: use Google, or the phonebook to find the address, and just walk in, say you oppose PIPA, and urge the Senator to vote no on cloture. These drop-in visits make our spectacular online protests more tangible and credible. That's it for now. Be proud and stay on it! --Holmes, Tiffiniy, and the whole Fight for the Future team. ___ P.S. Huge credit goes to participants in the 11/16 American Censorship Day protest: Mozilla, 4chan, BoingBoing, Tumblr, TGWTG, and thousands of others. That's what got this ball rolling! Please take a look and, if you have anything to add, comment on the article. It's a quick read, but I've linked to some other related stories that are also good reads. Incidentally, those stories also link to other related stories that also link to other related stories... They're all good reads and this has kept me busy for a week :-} Thank you. -- Vince Aggrippino a.k.a. Re: [osdcmy-public]
Frankly, at first, I did not want to come either. Seeing another Microsoft competition in MOSC makes me feel pathetic as an open source geek. As if we can be bought over that easily. But then again, I do value my friends. MDeC already cut down their budget tremendously, and if I decided to abandon them too, what kind of friend would I be. So I close my eyes and swallow the Microsoft 'milk' and hope for the best. Unfortunately, I was disappointed... but if it's for my friends, it's ok I guess :) Azrul On Wed, Jul 7, 2010 at 10:44 AM, Ahmad Amran r0k...@gmail.com wrote: To lawan sharuzzaman, i've highlighted the point before they come up with the MOSC idea:p. My abstract: Java Enterprise Edition has been going through a mid-life crisis: it tries to stay young (and hip) despite its age. Just like any one having a mid-life crisis, they are easy to take advantage of. In this paper we will look how these features can be used and exploited to our own advantage. Provide it with a powerful motorbike, a lether jacket and a pair of shades (asynchronous processing, JBPM and Quartz) and you can't really tell its age nor the maturity it keeps on the back pocket just in case you need it. Re: [osdcmy-public] Language to Replace Java
I would suggest scala 1. extracting tables from web pages and converting them to text files -- DONE http://www.hars.de/2009/01/html-as-xml-in-scala.html http://john-d-amos.blogspot.com/2009/08/vrbo-web-scraper-using-scala-and.html 2. transforming / restructuring the data into dimensional models 3. analytical regressions on the dimensional models This is where scala really shines, read about maps, reduce and flatmap. Plus the scalability of the JVM (running on something like Terracota, you can have literally thousands of nodes processing your stuff - if u do need that many) On Fri, Apr 23, 2010 at 9:00 AM, Raja Iskandar Shah rajaiskand...@gmail.com wrote: thanks boh. this looks promising. the specific things that i am looking are small backend processing stuff. examples are : 1. extracting tables from web pages and converting them to text files 2. transforming / restructuring the data into dimensional models 3. analytical regressions on the dimensional models things that the example bi tools do. the instance you mentioned is a good example. are there any equivalent open source projects ? python applications that does analysis on numbers ? From what I can see, its a BI type application, but do you intend to rebuild the entire thing when there are some good tools already out there? Or do you have some specialised solution that these cannot solve? If its the 2nd case, then I think Python is a great tool. If its not a well defined problem, it could call for a fair bit of experimentation, different approaches to the problem, compare the approaches etc... Python's dynamic nature and rapid-prototyping capability allows for a great deal of experimentation, and exploration to arrive at the right solution. And you are not afraid to 'throw away' code, because the cost/speed/efficiency of writing Python code is is pretty low. Then once you have the solution/algorithms in mind, you can deploy it in Python, which has many choices of frameworks etc... and if you have performance bottlenecks, parts of it can be rewritten in C and you can call that from Python w/o problems. The only problem is you may find a lack of Python programmers, a problem that can be said of good Java, Ruby and even PHP programmers (and i don't mean cut paste programmers;-). But they can be quite easily trained up. I have personally taught an ASP programmer Python, and he was able to do fairly sophisticated task after 2 weeks, it was to pull log data off a mobile app from a Postgres DB, rehash the data into another DB, to generate sales reports, delivered online with graphs in JS, live, on the web. (Mind you this guy had a far bit of initiative to go thru the docs and tutorial...) I can certainly help with the training, and I'm sure I can get others from the Python community. Just to be a devil's advocate here, wouldn't the cloud be contrary to the spirit of open source? Once you're in the cloud, you're locked. Re: [osdcmy-public] What you want to see if we had a Open Source Conference in Malaysia?
I want to see microsoft squirm like a worm [?][?] On a more serious note, I really hope there'll be: 1) More high end OSS stuff (like scalling your app to 1000 servers, persisting to more than several dbs at a time and still stay consistent, how to make stuff blazing fast under crazy load, how to zealously cache your distributed system and still keep your data updated, millitary grade security, how to design an app with enourmous domain requirement - think hundreds of DB tables - and still keep high cohesiveness, low coupling (i.e. no spaghetti ER model) and high usability) 2) Hands on stuff preferably with things stated above 3) More real world usage of OSS in the industry - preferable outside of the usual PHP/Portal stuff (sure, PHP is great to do portal but surely OSS has other unexplored niche that we need to expose - PHP for system programming anyone? What about a messaging queue in Erlang?) 4) Less vendor stuff - please, no more 'porting stuff to MS' competition. 5) Highlight the plight of the off-the-mill street-wise OSS developer/engineer (I've been one for the last 1 year - and it's not pretty). Making a decent living is like hell! (you could get projects tons of them, but everyone expect you to charge cheap since you're OSS, plus, they'll take a lng time to pay (some still owe me money - after 4 months now) because you don't really have licensing stuff. 6) Preferable, all presentators need to present their own contributions (in form of code, software, tutorial or what not). They shouldn't just spew things you can get directly from the web. 7) Oh yeah, ice cream for desert :)) Just my 2 cents Azrul Sensei On Mon, Feb 22, 2010 at 9:48 AM, Mohammad Sallehuddin Kodri mrblu...@gmail.com wrote: Just need to know what the public love to see. -- Mohammad Sallehuddin Kodri, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. -- Join Open Source Developers Club Malaysia http://www.osdc.my/ Facebook Fan page http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=98685301577 http://www.facebook.com/OSDC.my You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups OSDC.my Mailing List group. Re: [osdcmy-public] ramai FOSS berasaskan komersil
There is nothing wrong if a company or an individual wants to use prop. technology. Pay the license and knock yourself out. But when it comes to gov. education instituion, glc or any entity with public/national interest, transparency is a must and potential lock down by anyone be it Microsoft or Google is not a luxury one can enjoy. This is because any entity with public/national interest at its heart must be as independent as the nation it upholds. Allowing willy nilly lock down should be equated to treachery, at least in spirit. Now, nothing here says that FOSS solution should be cheap, in fact, it should be more expensive since the creator releases control of his intelectual property in total. Azrul Sensei 2010/2/17 red1 r...@red1.org Minggu lepas ketika saya berada di Paris menyertai Paris JUG (Java User Group), saya perhati ramai yang menggunakan Windows walaupun berbincang pasal Java punya FOSS. Pencipta JBoss, iaitu Marc Fleury pun memberi syarahan kerana dia memang orang Perancis. Gembira seorang diri kompeni sendiri tanpa pekerja. Masa itu dia ingin bercuti ke Australia. Kesimpulannya banyak kuasa pengaruh dari gergasi komersil dunia yang menentukan hala tuju sekarang bercampurkan FOSS. Re: [osdcmy-public] Malaysian Government Claims 95 Percent OSS Adoption
I'ts really hard to stop bitching but this 95 % business is really getting to me hahahhahaha... Anyway, just a few months ago, it was 70 % http://www.opensource.org/node/489. Wow! from 70% to 95% in a few months. By this rate we will have 115% by next year hahhahahaha... This was my take when it reached 70 % previously. Enjoy The gist of it: Revealing statistics without showing the methodology is the equivalent of saying the world is flat and you will fall off its edge if you travel too far. Anyway, keep up the good work Boh Yap. I'll be bitching^H^H^H^H^H criticising too I promise myself not to bitch too much but this is such a troll bait, I have to bite. Disclaimer: I'm not trying to belittle OSCC here, it's just that I believe that claims must be backed by facts, not just some numbers plucked from the air (maybe the facts are there that I just couldn't find it, if so, please point me to the right direction). My beef is this, how the heck do you get 70% from? just because a wannabe geek inside a gov. office uses OOo suddenly the whole office is counted as adopting open source? What about mixed environment, how do you count that? What's the methodology? What about running OOo on Windows? is that opensource or not? Things like these are important because it helps us to focus on what is needed. I mean, FOSS (OSS/FLOSS/whatever) is supposed to be winning and yet MS is laughing all the way to the bank with our tax money, what gives? The next guy shouting cybermerdeka! would be laughed at and yet the gov still kow-tow to Balmer like he's some enlighten being or something. Didn't someone say that the greatest achievement of the devil is to convince the world he does not exist... not necessarily true, but... Note: a more relevant study would show how much licenses purchased say last year compared to this year and how much we actually spend and how much saving is done. I guess those numbers are just too depressing to be released. Azrul Azrul Sensei On Mon, Feb 1, 2010 at 7:13 AM, Boh Yap bhy...@gmail.com wrote: hi all, thanks for the criticism... Look at what we have been told about MSC, is it a real success..? Maybe I have been in this industry, and at the 'bleeding edge' for too long, I wanna belief, but ... just believing ain't gonna make it happen. Our enemies are strong and they have marketing dollars to spend... think M$! Also, as a community I want us all to be wary, keep improving ourselves. No I don't wanna wait for the numbers, beacuse as I mentioned before, the numbers (or rather statistics) may lie! (and yes, I majored in Statistics). Web servers are not the only OSS soltn, true, but they are the most visible and easiest to assess. And Web Servers are where OSS has the strongest justification, compared to the desktop. If we don't/can't have a strong foothold there then, the chances on desktop are even slimmer. And looking at the link Haris provided, Open Office usage are pretty low, despite (from talking to OSCC staff), they have conducted many Open Office classes, so the uptake is still low... On the other hand, Raja I believe, has told me that the majority of Web Servers has gone OSS, mainly because internal IT Dept, either couldn't get a budget, or wait for a budget and decided to 'try' OSS, found that it works and took it from there. There could also have been guys that are already OSS supporters and persuaded their management to go OSS. These guys (respective IT depts) are the guerilla fighters of the OSS community and should be applauded and supported. They should be 'recruited' to be part of OSDC if not already so. Perhaps some of them are members of the OSDC, and could they pls give their views? But the point I'd like to make is that the success of OSS then is still limited, its the result of action of small groups of 'enthusiasts' within the government, and is still NOT A MATTER OF POLICY, or it may be policy but its not being followed...
