hi,

I agree with Eric, let's not fall into the trap of 'big brother' as
Malaysia has a tendency to do... ban this, ban that...

FYI just on today's news, Perak mufti made an annoucement to ban the
'poco-poco' dance...! Never heard of it, but I'm sure 'intelligent'
members of the public should know what is good/bad for them.

As members of the community, we would know who is involved and
contributes, and who doesn't. Naturally, we prefer to work with each
other (those who do contribute). So ppl like that company, either
learn to contribute or they will get isolated anyway.

The other more constructive thing to do, is to cooperate/collaborate
and come up with a better LPI Training organisation. This then sets
the standards and others, if they want to compete, will also have to
raise their standards. And if those standards include contributing
back to the community, then they will have to follow also. This way we
see a general rise of standards and practices that benefit the
community.

Well it seems the company has its direction wrong.

Nobody will fall for a "Flash"-y site anymore. If any, most of us,
with the exception for Youtube couldn't care less for flash.

That is not right. Red Hat and SUSE also doesn't put the community,
but customers first. Should we ban them? Same does Canonical. These
three companies are there to make money. Their community projects,
Fedora, openSUSE and Ubuntu, respectively put the community first.

But since the Govt is too used to the "vendor" system, they tend to

hi Eric and all,

noted; I got the IBM link from this page:

http://www.lpi.org/eng/training__1/study_materials/new_exam_preparation_resources_for_revised_lpic_exams

and it says the materials may be updated. The doc on the link was was
dated Aug 2009.

I followed and clicked the various links, most of the others are not
in English, or require you to pay/sign-up for a course before you can
see the syllabus (I did not try very hard to search..). The IBM site
showed that info quite clearly, so that's how I ended up there. I put
it on this list for those who want to see what the syllabus is like.
Its pretty comprehensive, and I may not be able to pass this!

BTW who are these guys?
http://lpi.asiatalk.com.my <-- from GoogleAds

I went to their website, they talk about LPI but nothing about
themselves .., who are the trainers, their background, ...
Are they part of any FLOSS community, or someone out to make a quick buck?

 It will explain it.

From what I interprete... as stated:

However, standards will have to be maintained, and I think LPI will
have standards for syllabus and certification requirements. And LPI is
recognised by vendors like IBM, Fujitsu... (I don't see any gov?) Will
 Malaysia gov. recognise LPI?

I think this concept is very interesting and radical but to succeed,
the trainers have to have a very "Open Source mindset", ie: they have
to want to explore, learn, solve problems and then share what they
have learnt. Our standard type of  Malaysian teachers will not work,
those who give you lots of homework and tips on how to pass exams!

The first way will create skillful and capable students.

The std. Malaysian way will produce students who score highly in exam,
but have little skills and won't know how to solve problems.

I hope we don't go down the 1st path... but a lot depends on the trainees!
I hope the selection is done with care...

Boh,

The one at the IBM site me thinks is the old syllabus. LPI is
developed by a consortium of vendors including people like Novell, IBM
& Red Hat. The certification program itself is considered neutral and
applicable to moat distros.

As for the syllabus always check the LPI site for the latest and moat
concise one.

hi Mohd Fadzil,

thnk you for yr comment, I wld like to be involved but I'm afraid I
may not have so much time to commit. Although I have done my fair
share of Linux installs and SysAdmin, and am setting up a 1U Debian
box to be a production server now (4core CPU, RAID, LVM...), my
primary interst is more on SW development and programming and I would
like to be involved more in the training of programmers and SW
development, especially in Python and applying Python in Web
Development.

It is also good to hear that MOHE is involved, and hopefully it will
change the way our Edu system to produces better quality
graduates/professionals. (and I have ranted on this..)

PS
I have applied as I would like to contribue, but as I said in my
application, pls give my place up if there are better candidates.

Thanks Boh Yap,

Indeed this is a good explanation about LPI I do agree your statement you
should apply this project too. Your spirit might help others trainer to
understand more on how to be good trainer and understand on the concept.

I do get private email from many others expert regarding LPI and they want to
share and develop LPI syllabus for Malaysia and will standardise material.

We want create more skill people not just only in paper. LPI are already get
support by MOHE, Our job now is think how to collaborate with our academia to
adopt LPI and others OSS syllabus so maybe help our student be more skill and
can challenge our IT industry requirement. It a long way to achieve that
something need to be done 1st because after this BSDA, RHA n NLC will follow.

We need more information, Knowledge and experience people to share what their
got and share with us. It not simple as nut but should take action rather
nothing.

For the selection we will do with official LPI staff and we will discuss how we
want produce skillful and creative trainers and hope we can get the 1st batch
Top10 LPI Trainers.

so does that mean they don't recognize LPI? If so too bad...

FYI, I managed to track down a sort of syllabus, this is from IBM
Developer Works, and yes IBM recognises and supports LPI, does that
make it a 'vendor certification' ? Its no different from Red Hat's

Boh,

LPI is part of their Core Competency programme.

But since the Govt is too used to the "vendor" system, they tend to
only appreciate vendor certifications.

hi all,

perhaps there should be a bit more information about LPI I came
across them a few years back, and thought their concept was very
interesting and different.

if you go to LPI:
http://www.lpi.org/eng/about_lpi
http://www.lpi.org/eng/training__1

It will explain it.

>From what I interprete... as stated:

"...does not have an "official" single method of test preparation. We
encourage publishers, schools and training centers to work together
within the community to encourage choice, flexibility and innovation"

Think of it as Open Source Training, where the training methods are
developed as with OSS, by sharing and cooperating, and contributing
back to the central core of training materials. LPI does not 'own' the
course materials, you are free to shared it, adapt it and jointly
developed it.

Hence as 'trainers' you are not only the teacher, but you are also the
'creator' and innovator of the teaching methods. They are also
evangelists and advocates to promote the use of Linux.

If you look at it this way, then you will understand the needs as stated:

"After the selection Top10 trainers the candidate will meetup each
others and train by them self and share with others how to become the
trainers. The topic will be discuss are:..."
