Re: [OSList] WOSonOS 2005 Nova Scotia - do you remember

2019-07-16 Thread Marai Kiele via OSList
Thank you for this description, Peggy,

And for enlightening me on what you brought into that Closing Circle, without
naming it.

So a wish of mine had been fulfilled, and I never knew!

I had discovered Bohm Dialogue in 2004, after several OSTs the year before. In
more „normal“ OST’s I found that sometimes the conversation was too mental and
linear for me, and too little listening took place. So I was interested in ways
of going deeper. His book opened up new possibilities and touched me deeply.
Yet I couldn’t find anyone close by who actually used it. I had a strong wish
of participating in such a Dialogue. Now, 14 years later, I learn that I
actually did. Big smile over here...

Marai

PS: I appreciate your links and the document you attached.

Diana — LOL…we’re getting old!

To put that in perspective, following that amazing conference experience in
Portland, one of the conference participants from Seattle faxed (yes, this
pre-dated email) all of the attendees from Seattle to find out who was
interested in continuing to experiment with Bohm Dialogue. About 15 of us
showed up. We met monthly for over a year.

I learned a lot about the power of open ended dialogue. In fact, it informed
how we worked when we started the Open Space Institute-US. After a couple of
tedious meetings using a traditional project management approach where I’d
coming with a pre-set agenda and we’d slog through it, we shifted to doing a
check-in, where people spoke to what they wanted to cover, moved into an open
ended exploration, and closed with a check-out. What I discovered was that not
only did we cover everything on the list that I compulsively made for myself,
but we covered things that hadn’t occurred to me. Plus, we enjoyed each other’s
company. In other words, we got more done and had more fun. Sure changed the
way I worked!

Hi to all the Nova Scotia WOSonOS Alumni,
I am writing to you from beautiful New Brunswick Canada where I am
vacationing with family. How I revel in the spirit of this inquiry which
happened before my life transforming exposure to Open Space in 2009. Soon
after that first introduction, I collected all my air miles and rushed to
Taiwan for the WOSonOS there. I relish the memories of it so deeply, in the
same "spirit" as folks sharing here.

Thank you Marai for posting this inquiry. It reminds us of the huge impact
of those global gatherings and our deep connection and affection of Open
Space. Even though our stories aren't the same, the awe and gratitude we
feel are beyond words.

I smile thinking of the title of my post yesterday on Facebook extending an
invitation to this year's WOSonOS to old pals and new pals: "Come Create
New Memories with Us". Prescient perhaps, synchronicity certainly. How
wonderful it would be if many came to share their old memories.

I also remember that I think we deeply entrusted the next Wosonos to the Moscow

Re: [OSList] WOSonOS 2005 Nova Scotia - do you remember

2019-07-15 Thread Marai Kiele via OSList
That’s exactly what I am intending to describe in my short story, Peggy!
I smile, reading your description.

I don’t remember „Bohm dialogue“ (Are talking objects used in that?)
Please remind me of what exactly you are referring to, so I can integrate that
in my story.

I do have a clear memory of the moment when Chris Corrigan picked up the
talking object and spoke up.
As I remember it, besides the „I“ language, he invited all who where expressing
themselves to broaden their perspective.

Not just think of „what do I want“ or „what do we, in this room, want“ but
include all those around the globe who are not physically there.
What would be best for the longterm flourishing of OST and for all those who
belong to the community, in some way or another?
What would be best for those who weren’t capable of bringing their perspective
in themselves?

To me, that was a sacred moment. I experienced that the whole atmosphere
shifted, and after a while the next location had become clear to the whole
group:
Moscow / Russia.

But I won’t give all the details of my whole story away in this email! ;-)

Yes, it was the year of Harrison’s 70th birthday. I remember the dancing!

The closing circle keeps coming back to me. We had invitations to go to two
places in 2006. We used Bohm dialogue to discern where to go. I remember we
used a talking piece among the 50-60 people. I recall setting it up with
something like listen to each other and speak when moved. And you, Chris, added
the essential guidance to speak “I” language — from personal experience.

Re: [OSList] WOSonOS 2005 Nova Scotia - do you remember

2019-07-15 Thread R Chaffe via OSList
When? When what? There was a gathering in 1990 or there about when Harrison
was in Melbourne Australia. It certainly included others who were from our
International community of ICA. The idea of WOS on Os had not been borne then
(I was going to say conceived). Clearly the idea of a global community Opening
Space was was lurking around as Harrison’s “Sprit” was written. I think it is
fair to say that the event called WOSonOS emerged in the early to mid 90’s.
Nova Scotia, is a clear recollection as it was a part of Canada that as a
family we fell in love with on or visit in the early 1980’s. Education and job
starts for my family were a higher priority for any disposable income for me at
that time so, I enjoyed the stories but the various WOSonOSs became a blur
until Marysville. Not much help in exact times but my comments may reflect
some of thinking through the 80s and early 90s. It is amazing how it has
matured into the event it now is and the many long friendships that have
resulted through those travelling, sometimes well outside their comfort zones,
to be part of and take responsibility for, the conversations, ideas and
suggestions that have developed during and after these events.

 Hey folks,

I am writing a short story about my experience at WOSonOS 2005 in Nova
Scotia. This will likely be published as a contribution to a short stories
 book.

It was my first and life-changing experience with collective sense making
(the way the location for the next WOSonOS was chosen, or rather: how it
 became obvious to the group).

I have the session reports from back then, but what I am missing are
 numbers like:

 - How many participants were we?
 - From approximately how many countries?

And then the questions that probably have been asked many times before.
Yet I still couldn’t find the „right“ answer:

 - Since when does WOSonOS exist?
 - In which locations / or in how many locations has it taken place up
 to this year?

 Thanks a lot in advance!

I remember 2005…it was celebrating Harrison’s 65th birthday I think too (or was
it 70th? I just know it was significant). I wrote a song for him based on a
Nova Scotia folks song…I’ll look through my old note books and see if I still
have the lyrics. I was so nervous to sing it! I thin I rehearsed it with
Esther Ewing, but I was too nervous to do it as a duet!

I remember too that we also mourned our colleague Colin Morley, who was killed
in the July 7 2005 London Underground bombings the month before.

I met some life-long friends at that OSonOS, including Feliz Telik from Turkey
and Piret Jeedas from Estonia who were both working (along with Kairi Birk) at
Tim Merry’s Split Rock Learning Centre in Yarmouth.

Halifax is such a great city. And it was a really fun time, probably my
favourite of the three full OSonOS’s I attended (including the OSonOS IX which
I co-hosted with Laurel Doersam in Vancouver in 2001). There was great
conversation, a beautiful, community location and dancing and drinking every
night!

Re: [OSList] WOSonOS 2005 Nova Scotia - do you remember

2019-07-14 Thread Jeff Aitken via OSList
Hi, the archives don't seem to go back that far. Were we on the MetaNet
back then? Then the oslist was born in mid 90s when we needed a listserv
instead of a website based conversation?

I remember the first or second Day's Inn gathering.

Was a nice complement to the OT "Symposium on Organization Transformation"
taking place each July in different locations. The 9th US OT was in
Colorado '91 and the 12th US OT was in Napa California '94 - and that's the
limit of my memory :)

2019-07-14 Thread Marai Kiele via OSList

PS: Counting the countries I amuse myself thinking that Austria, Germany,
Estonia, etc. are counted as different countries, and the whole USA and the
whole of Canada are one country each.
Which means that there were „just“ folks from 11 countries, as most
participants where from the USA and Canada.

Re: [OSList] WOSonOS 2005 Nova Scotia - do you remember

2019-07-14 Thread Marai Kiele via OSList
Dear Michael M & dear Peggy,
thank you for your responses and links to all the WOSonOSes.
What a richness!

And thank you, Michael M for being so thorough!
I had browsed the proceedings and totally overlooked the participant list…

Yes indeed, a total treasure chest. Also, I am amazed how many of those topics
could totally be posted in an OST today.

Like:
- Coaching/mentoring with leaders of an organization before/during &after an
OS-meeting
- How can OS help with the integration of immigrants in our countries?
- Where does the energy go? Post-event implementation
…

I smiled seeing my report on the topic I posted back then. And reading the
names of 22 great folks who joined.
Having OST memories going back that long, I suddenly feel like an OST elder…
That’s new!

Marai

Re: [OSList] WOSonOS 2005 Nova Scotia - do you remember

2019-07-14 Thread Michael M Pannwitz via OSList

Dear Peggy,

If you dig into the proceedings you will find a list of participants on
the pages 77, 78 and 79 pretty close to the last page.

At the very end there are some fancy charts on reporting in detail on
OSI USA activities.

You included a fancy report with colored charts in report nr 38
on The Dynamics of Conscious Emergence. There were about 25 folks in
that session, from Sweden, Austria, USA, Canada, UK, Turkey...

Many reports contain cross references and links.
The whole thing is a treausure chest.
Including a group poem shared in the closing circle produced by a
worldwide group of about 25 folks from Turkey to Haiti and so on.

Re: [OSList] WOSonOS 2005 Nova Scotia - do you remember

2019-07-14 Thread Michael M Pannwitz via OSList

Dear Marai,

looking forward to your short stories!

I was not in Nova Scotia but here is the link to all WOSonOSes

https://openspaceworld.org/wp2/osonos/

It seems that the first 4 were in Washington DC.
By my reckoning that means the first was in
1 - 1993
2 - 1994
3 - 1995
4 - 1996
5 - 1997 this one I rememer, it was my first one to attend, Larry and
Birgitt invited to Toronto
6 - 1998 Monterey, I was there. Until then the gatherings were named
OSonOS, at the Pacific we realized that the right name would be
"Worldwide Open Space on Open Space" and some folks at that time had the
idea to have some kind of Worldwide Open Space Institute that would be
registered at the United Nations as a global NGO.
7 - 1999 Chicago, where Harrison simply said, lets have it in Berlin
next year

8 - 2000 Berlin
and the rest you can see in the list up to
26 - 2018 Iceland
27 - 2019 Washingto DC (ok, that would be the 5th in DC)
28 - 2020 Berlin (that will be the third in Berlin)

Halifax has also a perfect set of proceedings, a list of all
participants included... just looking at it its more than 100, you
count, the countries of origin of participants are also mentioned.

The questions of when, how many and where have persisted over the years.
Frankly I can't remember either. Even the first one is foggy in terms of year

the search function on OSLIST. Somewhere "back there" I am sure you will find
