It seems like it accepts pw and username. Probably oc itself should too.

Sometimes, when I run a sync, the upload of a file stops immediately

more seconds/minutes, the error Es ist zu einer Zeitüberschreitung der

When I restart the sync client, it tries resumes the upload but keeps

Restarting the server solves the problem, so it might be a server-sided

Yes, accessing the data from multiple clients. And that could well be web

Could be done via the client overlay or later on with a browserplugin,

True, but public keys of other users could be managed by the server
and used for encrypting the shared file and reuploaded for the other
user. A bit more complicated and bandwidth/resource intensive, but as
you said solvable.

Actually yes, that's a feature. But I think we were hoping to make more

More control, more privacy, more security, that's what I personally expect

Re: [Owncloud] Client Side encryption with OwnCloud

2013-10-25 Thread Michael Grosser
The simplest solution in my opinion is to add one functionality to the
sync client. Having one encrypted/secure folder, which gets synced
additionally to the usual folders a user wants. All files in the
encrypted/secured folder will be encrypted/decrypted before the sync
client uses them. So compatibility won't change really.

secure/* - encryption - owncloud/secure/*-encrypted (your layer of
de-/encrypting)
owncloud/* - sync-client - server (usual sync-client functionality)

This way you don't interfere with the sync functionality or the
webinterface behaviour.

For the actual encryption I would prefer gpg/pgp like asynchronous
libs (do not try to reinvent encryption).

 Hi Klaas!

We would try make client side encryption available for each individual file,
making it possible to encrypt the files you want while preserving ownClouds

and what the encryption feature encrypts. But I think it's the best solution
for owncloud and leaves the freedom to decide to the user. I don't think
that the lack of web interface support for those encrypted files would be a
problem for those seeking maximum security, at least if we are clear about
 it from the beginning.

 Thanks for your input!

Regarding the value, in our project it actually was a quite often
requested feature and I personally find it important, too! As I
mentioned, not all users have the possibility to host their own server.
That's why we decided to focus on encryption. It's all about security!

What we need is the opinion of the ownCloud and sync app developers as I
guess they have been thinking about how they would like such a feature
to be implemented. Also we could check how seafile implemented their
 client side encryption.

Well, you would encrypt every file before you upload it with a local key.
Sounds simple, is probably doable for small files, becomes tricky for larger
files. You must permit uploads through the web interface and webdav.

I think it does not make too much sense because you loose almost all
features of the ownCloud web interface, such as viewing files, music etc.

Re: [Owncloud] your setup info ??

2013-10-02 Thread Michael Grosser
It depends on the usage pattern and on the setup you have.
You have to separate the file backend needs and the pure ressources
needed for sync clients, webinterface, caldav etc.
For the backend needs it depends mostly on what storage you give users
and how much they really use. This is probably best done using a
network file storage, which is mounted so you have 10-15tb on your
hands.

Then depending on the number of sync clients you have to beef up the
specs. Sync clients are ressource intensive for the server. As are
caldav, carddav syncs.

Their are no real specs for 10k users as it mostly depends on the
usage type. The demo.owncloud.org instance for example is not a huge
machine and handles 1k-2k users per day and a few thousand pageviews.
Not many sync clients or *dav syncs. And easily cachable.
You could try reaching out to the tu-berlin it team. They run one of
the bigger real production setups of owncloud. And probably can tell
you more about usage patterns and best practices.

Cheers Michael

server - this all depends on usage though - you would need to define
 this much better.

Owncloud can definitely be resource intensive. You would probably be
best served by getting a small test group and testing out performance
 and setup with them.

I have just followed a user who tried to setup his account with:
 1. download and install
 2. launch the OC app.
 3. press pause as soon as possible
 4. Bang memory corruption error csync thread terminated.
 5. 2-3 seconds later, windows error message: OC has stopped working
windows is attempting to close the app.

I have just seen a user recreate the error that he cannot complete the
setup of OC without crashing the OC app, and he wouldn't have any problems,
if the default option did not force him to (now) download 4.9 terabyte of
data before pausing the OC app. And he doesn't have 5Tb on his desktop.

 So what was missed?

 His usage of OC:
 1. put large files in a folder called upload.
 2. when sync completed, open OC web.
 3. use the move app to move it to the storage location (which is not
 synced back to his workstation).
 4. done.
Now he can't do that anymore.

Google drive has the sync option Only sync some folders to this
 computer. Why doesn't OCclient?

I'm using the selenium tests to create a test user and upload some of

In my opinion we should try to add to that test suite or create a new
testsuite that will do the necessary steps to upload whatever files are
 in the test-data repo.

[Owncloud] Problem with bookmarks app

I have a problem with the bookmarks app. If I add a bookmark via the
droplet I don't get the tags field displayed. The html where it should
be displayed looks like:

li
  ul class=tags

/li

in a proper way it should look something like

li
ul class=tags tagit ui-widget ui-widget-content ui-corner-all
   li class=tagit-new
input type=text class=ui-widget-content
ui-autocomplete-input placeholder=Tags
autocomplete=off
span role=status aria-live=polite
class=ui-helper-hidden-accessible/span
/li
/ul
/li

Does anybody know why the missing html is not generated in this first
example?
If I add a bookmark and edit it I get the autocomplete tags, so I guess
in principle it should work.

My environment: OC 5.07 and bookmarks app 0.3
a couple of days everything was working fine and than stopped, but I
cant remember to have changed something...

maybe somebody got a clue what it could be

certain groups, without changing anithing at the ldap tree.

I can filter for user whose maingroup is set in the user tree, but these
aren't all I want to give access to owncloud.

possibly know if you have many client platforms on your system?

I am very puzzled because it appears that different people have radically
different experiences - such as shown in this email thread - and I wonder
where this comes from. Maybe there is some server side configuration that
works better then others… or maybe different scale or set of client
 platforms...

In both cases, after a little (minutes) amount of time the quota value
is restored to what was before the update. This behaviour is independent
from the actual user to whom I'm setting the new quota. This value is
restored even when I keep the mysql session open AFTER issueing the
update statement on the configvalue column.

 System context:

   * owncloud 5.0.6
   * Ubuntu server 12.04
   * PHP 5.3.10
   * mysql  Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.5.31, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using

 gets the old value?

Thanks a lot and congratilations to the dev community for the

Re: [Owncloud] ownCloud 5 encryption pre release

2013-05-29 Thread Michael Grosser
Just as a note in general for Mailing-lists. Attaching pictures is
sort of bad practice, as it moves a lot of data and increases the
strain of the whole process.
Linking to some hosted pictures is mostly the better solution.

Can't help with the encryption, but seems like a good start to
improve. One solution for specific issues is to assign them with bug
reports in the github.com/owncloud repository. The text editor bug

I just installed the pre release and tried the new encryption feature. I
 upgraded from 5.0.6 using rsync.

OS: Scientific Linux release 6.4 (Carbon)
 HTTP: Apache 2.2.15-28.sl6
 PHP: 5.3.3-22.el6

 There are some problems:

 1. There are lots of errors in the owncloud.log:

{app:PHP,message:Call to a member function getFileInfo() on a
 non-object at

 \/var\/www\/html\/owncloud\/lib\/files\/filesystem.php#621,level:4,time:1369737911}

 2. I'm authenticating against LDAP. After enabling encryption, the first
login always fails with HTTP error 500. After reloading the page, I'm
 logged in.

 3. owncloud becomes EXTREMELY slow after enabling encryption. Changing a
directory in the web interface takes about 30 seconds. I first had to
increase the memory limit in php.ini to 2048M to get owncloud to work.
Before that I always got the error:

{app:PHP,message:Allowed memory size of 1073741824 bytes
exhausted (tried to allocate 1484274654 bytes) at

 \/var\/www\/html\/owncloud\/lib\/files\/storage\/local.php#113,level:4,time:1369732536}

 4. Opening a big text file (an export of my Windows firewall rules), the
text editor shows garbage on some lines (see attached pictures. The
first shows the file with encryption disabled, the second with
encryption enabled). The garbage occurs in regular intervals several
times in the big file. The file itself seems to be ok, because the
 downloaded file looks good.

 - Server side directory moves will be detected
 - No more false conflicts, ever
 - Legitimate conflict files only on client side
 - New setup wizard, defaulting to root syncing (only for new setups)
 - Solved problems with lock files
 - Bug fixes
 - Improved thread stop/termination

Packages for Windows, Mac OS and Linux are available from

Happy testing! We appreciate any feedback.

Let me state the obvious here: You _released_ a security critical feature
which has not been thoroughly tested (or even reviewed critically?) and is
 less than 24 hours old.

Looking at the amount of CVE numbers in ownCloud's changelogs and this
 email,
this suggests a fundamental process problem.

Having seen ownCloud being ridiculed for its amount of regressions and
security problems more than once in the past two weeks alone makes me sad. I
think the software and its underlying ideas has great potentials, but the
problems it's currently fighting will simply not go away if this way of
putting code out into the open is the norm.

 Cheers,
I think you misunderstand the mod_security stuff. Its a basically some kind
of firewall and an addtional layer of security. Basically it has nothing to
do with the current owncloud code.

If people say time is an issue, maybe we could add a page to Owncloud that
outputs the time so the sync client could periodically check? If the time
isn't close enough, try to trigger an update(if possible, this might be
hard - too many methods/programs that are used for this), but don't sync
until the time is good.
I know that for one other storage solutions like Owncloud do this.
Should I file an issue about this so someone could pick it up?

Re: [Owncloud] group admins and user creation privilege

2013-04-24 Thread Michael
Is there any reason why we don't use an full RBAC(Role Based Access
Control) implementation so that groups could be granted any priviledges? We
could separate many admin functions so that different use cases could pick
and choose what certain users could create. For example, help desks should
be able to create users and modify but not do much more to the installation
itself.

If we went to an RBAC model, many of the questions that come up(can I make
a group/user only have this permission) would be addressed.

 individual basis.

 Hi!
I believe use cases vastly differ.
I would prefer the super admin being able to decide, whether the group
 admin may create users.

However, there are a number of other questions regarding groups and their
 administration.

 * As of now, IF a group admin knows the exact user ID of another user on
the system, s/he may actually add this user to his/her group by creating
a userID with a random password.
 ** Is this desirable?
 * The group admin may also extend or reduce the user's quota.
** In my view this is definitely undesirable. The quota should stick at
the default setting, or even better, the site admin should set a group
 quota.
 * Group quota: Here we go!
 ** there is a feature request: https://github.com/owncloud/**
 core/issues/1347 https://github.com/owncloud/core/issues/1347
 ** Now in my view, existing users should be exempt from the group quota;
after all they may be members of various groups.

 Lots of difficult questions.

 Yours,
 Erwin

I am asking because I see a conflict here, between using groups with
subadmins and the admin's desire to manage the whole user base with
 user backends.

Since I would like to have both, I would be willing to implement the
necessary changes, but I would like to know the exact requirements
first and whether this has any chance of making it to the core.

  - one folder where downloaded torrents are stored
  - ability to use different torrent backends (put.io, your own
torrent running on the server?)

2. inter owncloud sharing:
  - having the ability to devote 20% of your storage to another
owncloud instance, which can store replicas of important data
encrypted on your server
  - would add the ability for replicas and better data redundancy

3. general replication support with other storage backends:
  (could be similar to #2)
  - let users set a replication level for their folders and where
these replica should be stored (replicas should be stored encrypted)
different backends

4. small task for news app:
  - public rss feed for stared items to be used with kindlefeeder.com
or other services for e-ink devices
  - ability to get full article instead of shortened ones (not
available yet or?)

5. media converter:
  - ability to convert music and video files into special formats
  - one source folder, where files could be deleted after conversion
or not (best to make an option)
  - one target folder, where all converted files are saved with the
same folder structure
  - conversion is done in batches with the help of owncloud cron
  - conversion target format can be set in the personal options (* -
mp3, * - mkv or mp4 for streaming) would be great
  - additionally single conversion could be done. give users an option
within the files view to not download, but convert
  - additionally within public sharing guest users could have the
option to download files with a special format, music folder with flac
files let them download as mp3s... or so, perhaps automaticly convert
publicly linked movie files to a streamable format?

(perhaps via external media conversion apis, local ffmpeg or remote
aws or similar tools)

6. zip support:
  - improve zip support, cache zipped files if storage is available,
this prevents from rezipping on high usage public links (not done
afaik)
  - prezip bigger directories shared via public link? owncloud cron?
  - enable zipping of huge directories... workaround the webserver limitations

7. backup support for SMS/Call activity:
  - app for backend for handling sms and call activity could just be a
layer over the files app structuring them via folders
SMS/date/person.txt or Call/dat/person.txt or so
  - mobile app, which backsup SMS and Call data to the aforementioned
backend. (Android and perhaps ios)

That's just a few ideas I noticed would be great to have.
If anything needs to be discussed I'm probably around.

Mobile app that syncs with ownCloud News app

 Description:

The News app is an atom/rss reader app that will be shipped with ownCloud 6.
The app was developed as a GSoC 2012 project. The app now exposes an API,
which can be used to synchronize external stand-alone readers with the app.

API specification will be documented on time before GSoC starts.

The project consists of designing, building and testing an rss feed reader
for a mobile platform that uses this API and so synchronizes with the
 ownCloud News app.

 Platform suggested are Firefox OS
 (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/partners/#os) or Phonegap
(http://phonegap.com/). The student is strongly encouraged to discuss the
platform and the details of the project with the mentors before submitting
 the project proposal.

Hey Pascal,

we now have a special demo mode enabled, which gives you your own
user, files, data etc. when logging in.
So you can try without being disturbed by anyone else.
With the new mode the demo slowed down a few ms on login, but that was
worth it I thought.
Additionally we had to disable default/demo contacts for now, cause of
a huge strain when importing an average of 5-15 contacts/s.
I'm still trying to optimize, but after one day of working to get it
production ready with huge help from Lukas (Thanks again), I think
it should do and hopefully contacts will come back tonight as well.
For anyone accessible as always under http://demo.owncloud.org

Re: [Owncloud] Greetings question on how to build desktop sync client

2013-03-11 Thread Michael
Often there will not be packages for a program in the distribution's
package manager. You may need to download those programs off the
internet somewhere. Generally you just download the file(wget is a
good program for this), uncompress it(tar), compile it(make), and
install it(make install).
Just Google openSuse install cmoka

 Hi guys.

Just subscribed to the list, so greetings to everyone.

I have a question on how to set up a proper dev environment to build the
desktop sync client. Building for Windows is desirable, but willing to
start from just building successfully in a Linux environment.

I'm following the instructions as defined here:
 http://doc.owncloud.org/desktop/1.2/building.html

I have set up a 32-bit OpenSuse 12.2 linux system as well as a 64-bit CentOS
6.3 system (both in VMs running in Parallels with OSX Mountain Lion as
 host).

I'm trying to follow the Generic Build Instructions
 (http://doc.owncloud.org/desktop/1.2/building.html#generic-build-instructions),
managed to clone ocsync and mirall. However, building csync fails with the
 following error:

In openSUSE, running the cmake command line shows the following:

-- Could NOT find CMocka (missing: CMOCKA_LIBRARIES CMOCKA_INCLUDE_DIR)

 (_FPHSA_FAILURE_MESSAGE)
   cmake/Modules/FindIniparser.cmake:36 (find_package_handle_standard_args)
   src/CMakeLists.txt:14 (find_package)

The documentation specifies I need for resolve some dependencies to sqlite3
and iniparser. I can't seem to find any repo that has iniparser - Can't
seem to find any repo that has cmocka as well. So any help here would be
 appreciated.

In CentOS, running the cmake command line shows the following:

 CMake Error at cmake/Modules/FindSQLite3.cmake:82 (message):
  Could not find SQLite3
Call Stack (most recent call first):
  src/CMakeLists.txt:13 (find_package)

Again, cannot find where to install cmocka from. However, it also complains
that sqlite is not installed. It seems to be installed though:

 [mbudiman@localhost ocsync-build]$ su -c 'yum install sqlite'

Any help to get compilation to work will be greatly appreciated. I know

Re: [Owncloud] website is down

2013-03-06 Thread Michael Grosser
The website issues are still not handled!
And won't for the next few days as it looks!
Great that you are still taking the through hardware at it approach,
but what about at least separate docs, website and download
servers/vms? that's like a few hours work and prevents everything from
going down when we have a minor spike in downloads.
Even putting it for 2 days on a CDN like akamai or be it
amazon/rackspace would be better.
It's just bad publicity for the site being down, especially after you
downloaded and want to install (with the help of the docs).
And to say that it's not the first time.
I know you have a dedicated sysadmin and therefore my suggestions to
help are not more welcome than they were 2 years ago, when these
issues first arose. But scaling a static download for a few days...
common... it's like saying: Hey we provide some storage software, but
we can't even handle usual file downloads!

That is something that needs to be fixed and not after something
happens, but during and better before. I'm telling this for a long
time, but having a project site with an uptime of 95% is just bad.

Fix this or let the community help and not just with some Maybe a
torrent based solution would take load off
A Torrent solution is setup in 5-15 min so do it, it's your server.
After it's setup you can ask for seeds. But that's something which
needs a fix and not just a we could/we may do something about it.
You could even have asked on the mailing list to get 1-2 people with
servers and push them the file and load balance.
I doubt that you have more traffic than 2 Gbit/s that should be fine
with 2 servers, perhaps 3.

For an appropriately funded inc with a sysadmin I really expect more.
Especially cause you don't wanna help with the server issue directly.
I'm not the only one thinking that way. I could write a lot more and
especially a lot worse for some people, but I want that fixed and
nothing more.
Decide what you wanna do!

Re: [Owncloud] Multiple Instances on one server

2013-02-13 Thread Michael
If I understand correctly, yes, this should be pretty easy. they just
need to be in different directories that are not parent/children
directories. This would work:
/usr/share/www/owncloudSecure
/usr/share/www/owncloudShare

That is just an example. You also should have two separate databases,
so pay attention in the setup.
They will be two separate installs and not share anything between the
two. Users will need to be created twice(unless you use LDAP or the
like).

[Owncloud] Memory Issue

2013-01-06 Thread Michael
Hello,
My issue is described in detail in this[1] thread.
I tried running index.php in commandline by php5 index.php. It eats up
all memory and still seems to be going. It is currently using
3200MB(seriously, 3+GB) and climbing. I'm going to have to kill it pretty
soon because it is going to start swapping badly. CPU usage is very low.
This is after a while. Have I found a memory leak possibly?

When I run it from the browser, I get 504 Gateway Time-out.
I am running the latest Ubuntu Nginx, the latest Ubuntu PHP5, and the
latest MySQL. All that I did was set up my admin user, created my user for
my files, downloaded the latest sync client, and started it up to sync
approx. 10gb files. It looks like it got to 7gb and encountered this issue.

I will probably just end up starting over. Is there a way we can diagnose
this?
Thanks!

Re: [Owncloud] upgrade from 4.0.7 to 4.5.3 without config files?

2012-11-30 Thread Michael Göhler
Hi Ditmar,

I would do it this way:

- setup a plain 4.0.7 instance with sqlite database and the same users you have
in your mysql instance, to get the data directory and config.php
- take a backup from your mysql db
- then change the config.php to use your mysql instance (look in
config.php.example for the right variables)
- Test if 4.0.7 is working
- delete the sqlite files from data directory
- upgrade to 4.5.3

Hope this helps,
Michael

Re: [Owncloud] ownCloud book

2012-11-28 Thread Michael Grosser
I would definitely vote for the expansion of the docu repos and then
perhaps let the publisher sponsor it.
They can print different pdf releases?
As long as we can combine the book effort with the docu effort it's fine.

Having an outdated one point in time book and a crappy docu would not make
sense in my opinion.

So thumbs up for expanding the docu and let the publisher sponsor it and
make one time tags to be printed by the publisher?
General license to be CC and perhaps have the commercial printing right for
special tagged version to the sponsoring publisher

Just my ideas.

I had no time to retest it jet.

@All: Where we track iOS bugs currently? :)

I've tested this and couldn't reproduce it.

If you pull the folder-list down it gets refreshed and new folders
appear correctly.

This gesture is not as intuitive as a refresh button. Maybe you didn't
recognize it?

Anyway, an automatic sync on startup would be nice.

[Owncloud] Feature Questions

2012-11-07 Thread Michael
Hey all,
Just have a few questions and suggestions!
Is there any way to make tasks show up on my calendar? I want those
apps to be integrated so I can look at the calendar and see what I
have to do today(meetings and todos are important for that!).
I would think they would just show up on the day they are due.

Am I missing something with the tasks app? When I add a task and then
minimize it, I only see the list I put it in. There should be more
info there - there is certainly room. A title would be very useful
here, otherwise minimizing is useless.

Why does calendar want my location? A notice about the reasoning
behind this would be good.

Calendar is slowww. Is this just because I'm using the demo? Also,
I can't change the time in the Create a New Event JS popup.

I'm getting ready to switch from Google Apps for myself to a
self-hosted environment, and Owncloud is hopefully going to be one of
the big applications to achieve this.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I actually think it's better to have that as a separate app. The
shorty app is quite alright and has a lot of features someone with a

It's not only about the link size, but also tracking, reassigning

Shorty is already providing that, I think the thing to do is just
enabling a shorten with shorty option within sharing, not sure if the
shorty app can do that with the new sharing api, I'm not that code
aware with the sharing api...

tracking, privacy breach (though voluntary), it can break at any time,
 …

What about by default the address being long and tokenized, and then
there’s a toggle in the address field with which you can shorten it?
 As discussed in
 http://bugs.owncloud.org/thebuggenie/owncloud/issues/oc-135, the
address can get much shorter (as for CalDAV and CardDAV).

If people need an external link shortener to be able to post their
links somewhere, we need to improve. This is not an app opportunity
but a much needed feature which just needs a tiny bit of interface
(but a lot of backend code I assume).

I actually think it's better to have that as a separate app. The

 short link wants.
It's not only about the link size, but also tracking, reassigning
 shortened urls etc.
Shorty is already providing that, I think the thing to do is just
enabling a shorten with shorty option within sharing, not sure if the
shorty app can do that with the new sharing api, I'm not that code
 aware with the sharing api...

an integration of Shorty into the sharing feature of owncloud is something I
was indeed asked about. Unfortunately all my attempts into that direction did
not really provide a satisfying result.
I am currently unable to invest time into that, I am afraid. I would love to,
but I have other things to do right now... So if anyone wants to step forward
and give it a try that would be great! Currently Shortys source is not inside
github but in a subversion repository of mine. There are various reasons for
this, but that certainly is something that can be sorted out.

My suggestion would be to keep things as simple as possible. The current
sharing feature provides two important aspects: a) it generates URLs to access
items, and Shorty is dealing with URLs. Fine. b) it takes care of a fine
grained rights management, Shorty in contrast does not do this (double this)
and there are good reasons for that. So in my eyes the best would be to leave
sharing as it works, except for adding a small logic that integrates the
Shorty feature into the sharing dialog. Something like this: if an item is
shared (however), an additional option create Shorty is offered. This calls
and fills the New Shorty dialog already present in the Shorty app in the
same way the 'Shortlet' already does from outside. This way the internal
rights management is not in danger of being bypassed. If an object is unshared
the still existing Shorty resolves to a denial.
Unfortunately the Share API does not provide such feature of an additional
option in the sharing dialog. So if we are talking about an app-centric
approach the only solution I see is to inject the option into the html markup
by means of js. THis should work, though it is not exactly a bulletproof
approach, since the markup of the sharing dialog might change. I would suggest
to provide such feature as an additional plugin to Shorty, just as the 'Shorty
Tracking' plugin already enhances Shortys features. Such additional plugin
should be implemented such that it an handle different layouts of the sharing
dialog being present. This way it is up to the local user (admin) if such
 integration is enabled or not.
+1 for the ideas

Re: [Owncloud] WebDAV with OAuth 2.0 support

2012-10-28 Thread Michael Gapczynski
We had earlier decided that we needed to implement OAuth 1.0a for the API
instead of OAuth 2.0. This is because of the fact that the security in OAuth
2.0 is only done by TLS and we shouldn't force this requirement on users.

If you want to play with this yourself, you can take a look at the
 OAuth 2.0 playground environment at
https://frko.surfnetlabs.nl/workshop/ to get a better idea on what
OAuth is, how it works and see it in action with some sample
 applications.

The Owncloud app is available in the Github repository at
 https://github.com/owncloud/apps/tree/master/user_oauth. You can point
the OAuth Token Info endpoint to
 https://frko.surfnetlabs.nl/workshop/php-oauth/tokeninfo.php for the
 token validation.

However, it is still hard to test as there is no WebDAV client that
supports OAuth, and there is no automatic provisioning in Owncloud,
although the user_saml app does this. This would need to be integrated
in the OAuth plugin as well so accounts are automatically created on
 first use.

[Owncloud] Google Code-In Tasks

2012-10-27 Thread Michael Gapczynski
Greetings from the Great Lakes ownCloud Developer Meetup :)

We came up with a list of tasks for Google Code-In, most of which are related
to writing documentation about apps. I understand that this is one of the
topics for the meeting, but I think this would be best to hand off to
potential new contributors with Google Code-In. The tasks do have developers
assigned to them that we believe are knowledgeable about that area. Most of
the responsibility is just approving a short description that would be put on
the website. However, we think that students should post to the mailing list
when completed so all developers can take a look and to make sure we have a
good response time for the students. Let us know if you have any additional
tasks or comments.

Re: [Owncloud] bugtracker situation

2012-10-22 Thread Michael
Frank,
This seems like a great solution. Thank you for working with everyone
to get it set up. Anything is better than what we have now - it
doesn't even list the bugs half the time.
I assume this move is starting immediately - are there any places
where we need to change links, update documentation, etc.?

 Hi everybody,

our current bugtracker bugs.owncloud.org works less than optimal as we all
know. We had several discussion on the mailinglist on irc and in personal
about options to improve this and I think all the options are on the table. I
think we need a solution because it is difficult to work with and people are
 complaining.

github has a simple but nice issue tracker and it is also nicely integrated
so the idea was and is to move to it. We don´t have a lock-in effect there
because they have nice import and export APIs. Thomas even wrote a very great
 migration script :-)

The problem is that we lose the user accounts when we move the existing
issues over and urls to the old bugs won´t work anymore.

So what we now do is this:

We will keep the old bugtracker bugs.owncloud.org for the old bugs but I will
disable the option to add new bugs. Existing bugs can still be updated and
 closed.
New bugs can be added on github. I even saw recently that other project do it
 exactly like that too.
So it can´t be that wrong ;-)

This seems to be the best option for now and I hope that works for everybody.

Re: [Owncloud] File sync in large scale (# of clients, files)

 Hello,

I'm trying to build a system for distributing large dynamic contents
(as big as Wikipedia) over ownCloud.

In this system, there will be a single server maintaining the whole
contents replicated from the original database, and anyone on the
Internet can access the server with read-only access.

 My questions are:

  * Is there a P2P implementation for distributing files over ownCloud?
Not that I know of. It's not p2p really but, you could distribute
files with help of the external storage feature and bind different
owncloud together via webdav. Not sure if that's performant enough and
works as expected.
  * How would ownCloud scale over thousands of (anonymous) users?
Depends on your setup. With the demo.owncloud.org instance we have a
few thousand pageviews per day and it's not read only access.
Read only access could be quite alright. But I would definitely advice
to use Varnish as caching server and cache most of the read only
requests and static files. With Varnish you should be able to handle
quite a lot anonymous users. If you need to scale up more? Probably
best to use a second Varnish server and load balance between them. I
think the bottleneck with anonymous users and varnish won't be the
owncloud backend.
If you have more infos on your setup I like to hear about it.

Cheers Michael

 Thank you.
