  Hi,
When I was sitting at a McDonalds the other day there was
the Aug 13 edition of the Bulletin. It had an article on Maggie
  Lecky-Thompson.
Is this true that she was attending a birth as
  claimed?
  check out www.bulletin.ninemsn.com.au for

[ozmidwifery] Anyone for Active Birth?

2002-08-27 Thread Aviva Sheb'a

I'm in denial. Surely we can't have gone so far
backwards in the past few years?! Don't let me start on the politics of it all,
or on politics at all. Unbelievable. I thought when I made a temporary exit from
the birthing scene, that when I returned natural birthing practises would be the
norm. I'm deeply disturbed to read what's been going on.

At the dance studio where I work out, (in
Adelaide) I mentioned today that I wanted to return to giving Active Birth
classes. "Insurance" was the cry. Oh blimey, here we go. Any ideas?

Hi Debbie!
Would you mind sharing with me
your disclaimer for your classes? Might be handy to have!
You can email me direct if you'd

Thanks!

In the meantime, our booking forms contain
disclaimers as a safe guard. My main concern is that, even if we are
confident that our information is true, evidence-based etc., that still
doesn't stop someone deciding to sue us, if they felt aggrieved. Even if
such an action were to be unsuccessful, there would still be awful costs
  involved. Debbie SlaterPerth, WA

Thanks for your input Julie - I
tend to have your view on insurance that it's not really necessary. I am pretty
much already in the practise of never giving advice anyway for my Doula work -
just presenting the options.
I guess you just have to weigh up your
options - and there aren't a lot of them at present.
Thanks again - it's reassuring to
know I'm on the right track.
If I go to Sydney next
February I'll have to come and meet you in person!

  insurance

  Hi
  Claudia and Larissa
  There
are a couple of different types of
  insurance.
  Public
liability is to cover class participants as they attend the sessions and have
an accident – fall over and the like – it will cover their medical expenses.
  Yes this one is considered
a necessity for anyone running a business. However, being a mum I find I
automatically walk around invisibly picking up things off the floor left where
someone might fall over it. Constantly gently checking that everyone’s ok – not at risk of
injury. Over 14 years have never had an
  incident.
  Another
insurance is to cover theft, fire etc and / or loss involving teaching
aids on your premises. This may be covered in your normal household insurance
if you run a business from home. That’s another one I have.

  Professional
indemnity is another insurance available if you give
  “advice”.
  I
have looked at everything I say and do – all the handouts I give etc. and I
believe they are all evidenced based and safety focused. As an educator I don’t feel “at risk”
of being sued over the information (not advice) that I
  provide.
  So
  I don’t have prof indemnity
  ins.
  Interestingly
though when I rang around a few brokers a couple of years ago to enquire about
pro find ins there were two questions they asked me before they rejected my
application. 1. Does your teaching ever have anything to do with homebirth ?
and 2. Does your teaching ever have anything
  to do with waterbirth ?
  After
answering yes to both they told me they didn’t expect any insurance company to
take it on and if anyone did it would be very
  expensive.
  So
  I didn’t worry about it. I don’t
  need it. I don’t give advice. I’m
very mindful to stick with evidenced based and an attitude of safety. I believe this is
  Andrea
  Robertson’s
  attitude too.
  Though
someone with a different opinion is Carol Flanagan – Ex Childbirth Ed and now
working full time as a Solicitor – had Maggie as her midwife – very happily –
and did a wonderful task of supporting Maggie through her crisis a couple of
  years ago. Carol
looks at the professional indemnity insurance as a necessity in the
case where someone who is very unreasonable decides to attempt to sue an
educator, then the educator needs the insurance cover to pay for their
  defense. Otherwise it could cost
the educator their family home to defend
  themselves.
  I
think it’s worthwhile to listen to everyone’s opinion and then think it
  through for yourself.

  Self-reflect
on what you say and how you say it in class, over the phone and in writing.
  Check the integrity.
  Hope
  the above information helps.

Re: [ozmidwifery] Anyone for Active Birth?

2002-08-27 Thread Debby M

Aviva,
As a Mum who has actively sought an Active Birth it can be a fight - depending on what your description of active birth is. There was certainly no problem with me moving around in labour, assuming any position I wanted or using the shower. But among the OBs I spoke to there was certainly the perception that delivery should be on the bed, on my back.
I fought this and have got into the Birth Centre where I will be delivered by a lovely midwife in whatever position I want.
I am sure if the Mum is in a position other than on her back on her bed she can tell the OB (or whoever) to get stuffed if they insist she get back onto the bed, but knowing how open I was to suggestion during my first two labours most women probably wouldn't even argue. Therefore really the best course is to have it in her birth plan and for the woman to make sure her birth team support her in maintaining whatever position she is happy to birth in - easier said than done at time.
The insurance argument is ridiculous, if the birth is that difficult then the mother is going to be compliant to moving to a position where instrumentation can be used to assist, but I have never heard of anyone sueing because their baby was born with Mum on all fours instead of flat on her back.
Deb

[ozmidwifery] i'm a little confused

2002-08-27 Thread Robin Moon

Expressing antenatally? Could someone please enlighten me to this practise?
It sounds like an eminently sensible idea but i'm intrigued

How much would you expect a woman to produce antenatally , when would you
commence it and how often would you do it? is antenatal colustrum the same
constitution as post-natal colustrum? Does pumping/ expressing antenatally
actually increase your supply antenatally?

questions, questions, questions

Robin.

 Hi Everyone

Just a brief reminder re the ACMI National Education Forum to be held in
Adelaide on September 27. The program looks excellent and is not just for
midwifery educators and lecturers. There is a session from consumers on
the
language we use, sessions on mentorship and the AMAP results will be
presented. The afternoon promises something for everyone with sessions
relating to midwifery students, midwives in their first year of practice
and
midwives pushing the boundaries in new models and challenging practice.
Let's also not forget the ACMI AGM and cocktail party to follow!

Early-bird rate closes this Friday so get your registration in ASAP. Go to
the ACMI National website at http://www.acmi.org.au www.acmi.org.au to
register on-line. Looking forward to seeing as many of you there as
possible. Adelaide in September is beautiful and the wineries aren't far
 away.

  Hello list!

I just wanted to comment on two separate tv
inncidents I have seen in the past 24hrs that I thought were
  wonderful!

On Rove[live] last night the first guest, a
female comic [who's name I forget!] wastelling Rove about one of her
births, how it was a homewater birth in a pool provided by her
midwife,[thats right listeners - the word midwife was used on prime time
tv!!] how she was walking naked abouther backyard holding on to the
clothes lines and groaning for all to see!! Rove's face was priceless! He
asked if she had to get into the pool justbefore the baby was to be born
[I think he was a little boggled by the logistics of the whole thing!!] And
she replied no, that she got in when she felt liked it and stayed there!! How
  wonderful!!

Then this morning on ye old Bert Newton, they had
Frankie J Holden on and his wife Kate has just had a beautiful baby girl,
Georgia. Bert was talking to Frankie and they cut to Kate and the bub who
where in the throws of breast feeding! Fancy that, on national
  television!!

I hope you are all well.
  Take care.
  Love
Jessica.
