Hi All!
Did everyone hear that
Victoria Beckham had a little boy by caesarean?? David Beckham's football
club apparently paid for the "delivery" so that she would have the baby at a
convenient time so as to not disturb his (hubby's) football training
etc!!!
When my husband heard this he
went right off - so some of my warbling about birthing matters must have got

No wonder women are getting

2002-09-01 Thread Debby M

I don't know how you can get the policy changed as a staff member other than encouraging other mw to have OH&S type training that allows for women to be managed in baths - RWH Brisbane apparently do this training through their physio dept and it teaches the mw's how to lift (with assistance) a patient "in trouble" out of the bath using one of those fandangled lifting devices.   At least then the OH&S argument could not be used as a stumbling block.
After that you can really only advise women to do what I did - as consumers - and that is demand the right to use the facilities.

[ozmidwifery] water

2002-09-01 Thread henk / eliza merbis

Hi All,

I have just joined the casual pool of a very large
hospital and am very disappointed to hear that labouring women are not allowed
to even use the spa baths (provided in every ensuite) whilst in labour.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can go about
making change!!!???
I realise I am new to the hospital (and new to Mid)
but just cannot understand it if strict guidelines are in place and used. I
looked at their policy on their Intranet and it is extremely detailed, so why
can't I go by this???

  [ozmidwifery] Natural Birth
Hello all. My name is Rosemary Weckert and I've
been a silent reader of the list for a long while. Thought I had to tell Jo
about the birth I attended today at Alice Springs Hospital. I am gathering
evidence to apply for accreditation as an Independant midwife. The hospital is
supporting me with insurance but the births have to happen at the
hospital. So in my own time I am working with 20 families during their
pregnancy birth and postnatal period. I attend antenatal care in their homes
or at ASH it's their choice. I go to them when labour starts and when they
decide it's time to go to ASH for the birth I accompany them, assist them with
the birth then follow them up after the birth at ASH then at home. Anyway
today a woman having her 3rd baby went into labour, up to the hospital we
went. 4hrs later she sat on the birth stool and breathed her baby into her
husbands hands. They went home 4 hrs later. I feel lucky to be working in this
way. When I read about the way some midwives and women are
treated when they do have to transfer to a hospital I'm glad I live in Alice
Springs. We're not perfect but we have a good team of doctors and midwives
who are trying to be progressive. Although we have'nt been able to
break down the waterbirth barriers yet (we do have 2 large suitable baths in
readiness). I get asked a lot about what will happen when this project is
completed. I can't say for sure especially if there is no insurance but at the
moment these women are my teachers and I'm enjoying it.
We're always looking for staff, if you never
never go you'll never never know!
  Regards
Rosemary

That's exactly what I'm doing. That's great if it
doesn't matter where the births take place. I've just come home from another
birth. First baby 9hr labour, no analgesia, baby boy born at 2059, all's
well and everyone is extremely pleased with themselves. I can't sleep so thought
I'd check the list.

For accreditation, the place of birth is not the issue.  The issue
is that you have provided primary midwifery care during pregnancy, labour and
birth and post partum for 10 xcases.  It sounds as tho that is what you
  are doing.(?)

I thought I was the only one who thought that the ACMI was fairly silent . I
want to see lots of articles in the papers shouting about the benefits of
mid. care, and yes I am a member. Leigh

Ashley Montagu's Touching -- the Human
Significance of Skin. Shows up in second hand bookshops, libraries etc. I
don't know how much there is on your topic. I've warmed a baby in the
dead of winter (I arrived a little after the birth) and it was so cold, the
mother was exhausted. I'm blessed with a G-cup. Tucked bub under the
  breast...warm as toast!

Loved that skin to skin contact with my own
  babes. Excellent bonding.

Not very scientific, but valid to
  me.

  I wish you success,

Dear Justine
thank you for your response, I certainly agree regarding
the blisters. I am so disappointed at what appears to be a lack of
support for each other.  I recently attended a large meeting with
many midwives(who make up the large percentage of midwives with vast
interest in the current models of midwifery care) attending and it was very
clear there was no support for anything other than protecting your own
patch.  Thank you so much to Denise and Jan for their wonderful
speeches and their courage to support women and fellow
midwives.
I agree its worth hanging in there and I suppose it was
just a moment of absolute frustration with battling the current system that
seems to thwart every attempt at midwifery care centred on women, not
instutions.
Cheers Marian

  Just like to stimulate some
discussion regarding the recent press around smaller birthing services
in Sydney and surrounds. Is there any support for women currently
choosing these services for birth, or do we think these services are not
worth hanging on to.  There seem to be an abundance of ideas for
new models of care for midwifery services and I believe we need these
plans for the future of birthing women but at the moment feel we are
throwing out our old shoes before we have the money to buy the new. What
do other midwives feel. Cheers MarianHi Marian and AllI am unsure exactly what you
mean.  Are you referring to the appalling moves in NSW to
centralise regional services, or the National Maternity Action Plan ( a
model to increase midwife-led care)?  In relation to throwing out
the old shoes it is true that many midwives will be
uncomfortable/unwilling to work in a caseload capacity in an autonomous
way.  There are many (including our IPM’s) that would love to.
The time is absolutely ripe (with the professional indemnity
‘crisis’) to demonstrate VERY clearly to politicians and policy makers
that midwives are legitimate carers for women and can adequately care
for normal, healthy pregnant women through the entire episode.
Their care is proven to be more appropriate and cost effective and
the relationship a woman forms with a known midwife has such far
reaching benefits for her and her family.Combine the
international research, practice with 30 parliamentary inquiries since
1985 across the country with the majority recommending an increase in
midwife –led care.  BINGO!If the system was to support
appropriate midwife care we would see 80% of normal births, rather than
the 20 or so % we see now.  Over time a great many more women would
see birth as a normal and beautiful life event, rather than a terrifying
experience that they need to be anaesthetised from.  Our
Tresillian, etc services would not be full and mothering would be
greater valued, because women would demand it!The old shoes
don’t fit!!!  The new one’s may give some people blisters, but hey
once we walk them in they be the best pair ever!!Justine

Some members of the ALP are midwives and are
active members of ACMI and the ALP.  I am aware that the Brisbane
branch of Emily's List has received a copy of the NMAP. I am aware that QNU
has a copy of the NMAP and members of the ALP Queensland health policy
  committee also have the NMAP.
I can only speak for Queensland in areas I know.

I don't see many midwives in these forums, where are
  they?
  cheers

How do we go about getting NMAP on the
agenda of Emily's List???
Becuase we need to be politically connected
and active to effect change just as RANZCOG and the AMA are to get what
they want!!

I recently joined Emily's List,  an ALP organisation.
Why?  Mostly because I just love their slogan."When
  women support women, women win!"
I think that says it all.
