was privileged enough to be present at. I wrote to the list a few months ago 
because my sister-in-law had been told to have a c-section due to bad varicose 
veins in her legs. After passing on all the information and support I received 
from the list to her, she decided to try for a vaginal birth and went and 
found an Ob who supported her decision. I travelled up to the Gold Coast a few 
weeks ago and she birthed while I was there. It was 4.5 hours from when her 
waters broke to when she birthed. She did it without any intervention (Private 
hospital !!?! WOW), on all fours and didn't even use the gas. The power of this 
woman was amazing Her husband wasn't interested in helping her during labour 
so I was really involved as a support person. It is one thing to be witnessing a 
birth as a student, but quite another when it is someone you love! Anyway, the 
whole experience was wonderful for all concerned and I wanted to thank the 
people on the list who were so helpful to us back in December.

Dear Sally

I was 3.5 weeks over with my second baby
Ryan, I thought he was due on the 5th to 10th of May but
he decided on the 2nd of June.

I knew exactly when I’d fallen
pregnant and did a test as soon as my boobs felt sore and it was positive –
I was only a couple of days late for my period – I plotted everything on
the calendar.  I went to a very
experienced GP who confirmed the pregnancy and agreed with my estimation then an
OB who also agreed then switched to a midwife who also agreed with
the fundal height and dates etc.  There was never any doubt.  However when I was 37 weeks I felt so
big and tired if someone had told me I had another 6.5 weeks to go I think I
would have gone crazy.  I think it’s best just to take it a day at a time and recognize
the baby will come when it’s ready.

It was certainly the longest 3.5 weeks of
my life.   I traveled into the city every second day
after 42 weeks for external fetal monitoring and the lovely midwife also called
Julie was so gentle and kind and supportive – she knew Maggie and had
been to some workshops with her – so fortunately she was very helpful –


One of the things I think that hindered me
was being too busy during the last part of my pregnancy – getting a bit
fussy and anal about things and the stress of looking after a 3.5 year old very
active son.  I think I was a bit too
stressed.

Maggie rang me one night asking if I’d
make a birth plan – I said not exactly because I figured she knew what I
wanted etc our philosophy was the same – but Maggie wanted me to think
through how the labour was going to go – sort of
birth affirmations and birth plan rolled into one and then she was incredibly
patient with me and we talked through a few things – a few minor concerns
– after we hung up the phone I perched up in bed and wrote a sort of
script of how I wished/guessed it would go.

That I would start with mild contractions
and then ring Maggie as soon as it was obvious labour
– she would come straight away – when she would arrive I’d be
5 cms dilated – she’d check me and then I’d
progress rapidly but in time for mum to get here and my friend – ABC TV
were supposed to come to which they did but too late –

About 9.30pm that night after scribbling down a few ideas I slid down into bed
and went to sleep.

I woke at about 12 midnight with a strong need to wee and within an hour and a half he was
born – 

We rang Maggie and she flew (on her broom J) down here in just 50 minutes WOW came in checked me I was 5 cms, I quickly gestured that she read the paper I’d
written on only a few hours before and she sort of went “oh shit”
because she realized it was going to be quick and then she flew into gear
really fast and then she helped me downstairs while I had triple peaking
contractions WOW she and Geoff organized the pool – Basically it all went
as it had been written …

My suggestion Sally is that Maggie sort of
helped me unleash the birth thoughts in my mind into actions…

Perhaps my story could help you do the
same for your women…

Hi Sally...

Veronica was born exactly 3 weeks past my 'due date' :-oThis took my
relationship with my midwife to new heights I would just say to
her..."trust the woman"However I know it took both her and Mary J
well beyond their comfort zones. My dates were not concreteI had had only
had one period since Cecelia's birthand wasn't sure of the exact timing of
Veronica's conception...only I had a time frame of two weeks as Adam was in
Hong Kong...so Veronica was either conceived before he left or on welcoming him
home LOL!!! In retrospect, I would say it was on the welcoming him home !!

However...what this taught me was to be patientand listen to the
woman...listen to the baby.and to make decisions on what was concrete
before us...not on 'dates'I was well...the babe was well...and labour
started when we were all good and ready.

Veronica Maree was born at home on the bathroom floor surrounded by with her dad, her big sister and midwife friend who came to lend a helping hand as the primary midwife was in transit.34 minutes after labour began...OMG So when she finally decided to enter the world she did it in a hurry and she still is!!

She has been approached to endorse - but she has proved very difficult to contact.

Luckily - she has a new chief executive assistant (can't remember her exact title), who used to be our HR person at work, and who I know well.  She knows that we would like Fiona to endorse NMAP, but I thought I would let her settle in her job first before pressing her on this - but it is something I intend to follow up.

Hi,

I am sure everyone will ahve caught up with the news that Dr Fiona Stanley 
is Australian of the Year. It is terrific to have someone involved in 
maternal and child health recognised in this way, especially as it will 
help raise the profile of women, babies, birth etc.

Seems to me that she would be an ideal person to endorse NMAP. She might 
also be willing to give it some publicity, or at least allow her name to be 
used  Has anyone approached her? As an epidemiologist she is perfectly 
placed to see the significance of midwifery care options .

Hello Kartini,

Birth International holds a "Future Birth" Conference every 2 years and in 
the other year we hold a major series of midwifery focused, top level 
workshops. All are scheduled for major capitals and some other centres 
around the country. I am sure there would be something of interest for you 
in 2004 - keep an eye  on our web site for details!

If another group decides to host a conference, we are happy to carry 
details of that on our web site as well, especially events that 
promote/support The Maternity Coalition.
