Re: [ozmidwifery] Breastfeeding: Science and Experience Great conference specials
Hi Denise. I am definitely going to the ABA conference, so will catch up with you there. I got in contact with Rochelle (Hi!) and will attend one of the Birth Place meetings in Joondalup. I just need to look up to see if there is one tomorrow because I have the day off. Things in JHC are ok - rather hectic though. I went to an 'obstetric emergencies' lecture today, and it was good to recap all of the manouvers again. [ozmidwifery] Helpful hint
The Art of Midwifery I have been a midwife since 1979, and in all these years I think the best help for a mom with a posterior-positioned baby is to have her sit on the toilet backward with her feet flat on the floor. Sometimes I apply pressure to her back with my hand or apply heat with a warmed-up rice bag. Linda Thorpe, CNM, Fort Edward NY

[ozmidwifery] funds for professional development
Hi Laraine (Think I've finally learned to spell your name right!) I am interested in the Maggie Banks workshop, probably December. So just putting my bid in if the funding becomes reality. Let me know what you think of it. Cheers Lynda - Original Message - From: Laraine Hood To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, April 24, 2004 2:03 PM Subject: Re: [ozmidwifery] Australian research My onlyquestion isdo we impose what we as midwives want on women? Surely if they want their baby weighed for whatever reason, they have that right. Otherwise it is again limiting women's choice. Ihave heard ofmidwives who refuse to weigh the baby until the next day, do we have that right? Even if their reasons are that they teach the mum to look at their baby and assess its growth etc rather than relying on weighing, but again , do we have that right to say what they can and can't do? No criticism, just thoughts. Re: [ozmidwifery] natural birthing options in Adelaide
Unfortunately your friend is out of the catchment area to have her baby with the Midwifery group practice at the women's and children's hospital, although she can still go to the Wch delivery suite. The is an excellent birthing centre at Flinders hospital which would be closer to her. Haven't studied them in detail (it's about 60 odd pages), but here are summaries of some of the points I picked up (I think): CS should not be offered before 39 weeks; Women should be advised that a homebirth will reduce their risk of a section, but using midwifery-led units doesn't !!! Continous support in labour reduces risk of CS; Induction should not be offered until after 41 weeks; Maternal request should not be a reason for a section; Active managment and early amniotomy should not be offered, but a four hour partogram should be used !!; EFM increases the likelihood of a CS; Breech presentation should be offered ECV before a section is offered; Twin pregnancies should try vaginal birth if first twin is cephalic; VBAC should be supported Interestingly, it says there should be RCT's to compare vaginal birth and sections !!!
