Re: [ozmidwifery] Honey for infants

2004-06-17 Thread Tania Smallwood
I also have a question along those lines...

Have a friend who has a 4 month old, they are honey producers on a small
scale, but are worried about the fact that their little one will soon be
mobile and in contact with honey, and the equipment used to store and
produce the final product. Is it only the ingestion of honey that's not
recommended, or is she going to be at risk via an airborne contamination
(potential) being in such close proximity to it before it is filtered and
treated?

Any honey experts out there?

Tania

Honey can contain the spores of Clostridium botulinum, and it is recommended
that it not be given to children aged less than 2 years. Previously, honey
was prohibited in foods for infants in Australia, but it is now permitted
providing it has been treated to inactivate C. botulinum. This is indicated
on the label by the term sterilised honey.1 After the age of 12 months,
children are less susceptible to this bacterium.1

[ozmidwifery] 10 years of Mackay Birth Centre

2004-06-17 Thread Birth Centre-MBH
10 years ago today the Mackay Birth Centre was officially opened. We were Queenslands
first Birth Centre still only one of 2 in the state. It's been a bumpy road at
times, but with passionate midwives and passionate and active consumers we've made it.
The Friends of the Mackay Birth Centre have planned a Birthday Party in the grounds of
the BC on Sat. on Thursday 24th (Show day here) we're having a past present
midwives lunch.
Getting wonderful positive local press, too.

So . Happy Birthday to us

Sue, Marion, Rosie and Julie

I read with interest your email regarding the celebration of Mackay Birth
Centre's 10th Birthday. I work at a Birth Centre in Hemel Hempstead in
Hertfordshire, England which has just celebrated it's first year and shortly
after, it's 500th birth. I hope our birth centre will still be going strong
as your's obviously is. I only wish I could be there to share your
celebrations, but it's a bit of a long journey. Maybe if our dreams of
moving to Queensland in the next year come true then one day I will be able
to visit (also have a cousin lives in Mackay, so I suppose I will need to
pop in on him also).

Anyway, well done and Happy Birthday.

RE: [ozmidwifery] Honey for infants

2004-06-17 Thread Underwood, Julie (SERCHS)
I attended the Milk,Mammals and Marsupials conference last year and there
was a session on infant botulism presented by L Potvin an IBCLE from Central
Coast Health Paediatrics in Gosford NSW. There was nothing that this lady
did not know about the disease having looked after a baby affected by it.
She stated that honey can carry the Clostridium Botulinum spore and should
not be given to infants under a year of age. She also included raw veges and
corn syrup in her carriers list. If anyone at your workplace attended the
conference they would have a transcript of her talk and I am sure she would
be happy to talk to anyone if you contacted her. Two references listed were
http://www.infantbot.org and
http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/consumer/botulism.htm.. Hope this helps
regards Julie.
