2003-03-12 Thread J Stewart

Dear List,

Sorry if my previous email caused offense to
anybody. However I feel that it is important that as individuals, and as groups,
we do what we can where we believe a difference can be made through action.
Despite the fact somethings may appear a David vs Goliath Battle, better to
make an effort than none at all and put it into the too hard
basket.

Take care,
Jess.

Dear All,

Thank you all very much for your
advice/stories/comments re the dummies vs thumbs!! My [gorgeous, cute, darling,
cute cute cute!!!] cousin is still happily chewing away on the hands, her mum is
more than happy although nanna still needs some convincing!

Uni goes back in the morning! If anyone has seen my
3 months of holidays lying around i'd like to know where they
went!!

Thanks again!

[ozmidwifery] thumb or dummy!?

2003-02-23 Thread J Stewart

Dear List(s)!

Just looking for a little bit of general advice on
an old debate!
I have a six month old baby cousin
[very cute!] she has taken to sucking her thumb as she is starting to get
some toothy pegs! and her mum is not in favour of giving her a dummy. I was
wondering what opinions are on this? I would think that sucking thumbs could
effect tooth development and the direction/position in which they grow, as well
as forming a hard to kick habbit in todlers, but have also heard interesting
points against dummies.

Any thoughts!?

Thanks in advance!
Jessica.

[ozmidwifery] claudia's foot!

2003-02-01 Thread J Stewart

Just think, if she had the baby at HOME she would
not have had to walk very far on her poor under fed foot!

Add to that WATERBIRTH with her MIDWIFE, she would
not need to stand up, and the water would not only provide relief to her belly
but prevent her from putting her [under]weight on her foot!

Just a thought!
Love Jessica.

Dear List,  I just had a
wonderful follow through experiance - minus a birth!  i have been
following this wonderful women thru since mid 2002,and she was due 7/1/03,
however went 10days over with her now  21month yo.  her 1st
labour was a swift 6 hrs, so i had a hunch this one maybe  the same!
she was booked into be induced at 8am fri 17/01, so of  course it came
as no suprise when she told me she got a show in  the morn of the
16th!  anyway, got a call at 2.15am fri 17 [today!] that she was in
the  b/centre with 2-3min apart, so i broke a few land speed
records  and got in there at 2.45, the baby was born at
2.42!!  the amazing woman ruptured her membranes at 12.20 and
within 3hrs  had a beautiful 8pound baby boy!  the thing
that amazed me was the look on the dad's face when i  walked in, he
could not stop apologising!! he was dissapointed i  didnt get there in
time!! i reasuured him that this was about him his wife and baby not me and
to relax! but it was so beautiful to  see how they wanted me to be a
part of this experiance with them  'because i had made the time to come
to all the app's" said dad!  we really are lucky that there are
people out there so open and  accepting to let students like us be a
part of their birthing  miracles!
so
i have now been to 3.5 births!!  take care, love
jess.  ps - mum and baby [and dad!] doing fine!

initial guess of 9.5 pounds was out - try 10 pound 8 and 1/2! yes, wow and oww!
i havent seen her but spoke to the midwife and she has apparently suffered a
broken pubis bone and a collapsed pelvis, she was bound up and sent home
thursday.

i am currently in the middle of clinical placement
- at the repat, not happy. fatal cardiac arrests, derrogative langauge to
patients, poor pac and generally not a happy place, i want to go back to the
birth centre!!

hope everyone is well.
love jess.

dear All,

I am happy, stoked, proud, thrilled and woohoo-ed
to announce that today saw the arrival of a baby, which coinsided with me
assisting at my very first live birth!

i rushed to the hospital at 3am this morning and at
12.40 in the afternoon mr 9.5pounds reared his [HUGE] head!! i
cried!

i was able to get really envolved, it was amazing! mum was EXCELLENT! 13hrs
of labour, strong contractions and using only the gas. however, her
dialation seemed to halt around 9cm which was frustrating. but to cut a long
story short, the big beautiful head was born then within minutes the even bigger
shoulders then he was here! im suprised you didnt all hear me singing and
dancing around with joy!

mum and bub are fine, student midwife dancing
around the room like a crazy person!

just had to share!
take care!!
love [a delirious]
Jess

[ozmidwifery] good publicity!

2002-08-27 Thread J Stewart

Hello list!

I just wanted to comment on two separate tv
inncidents I have seen in the past 24hrs that I thought were
wonderful!

On Rove[live] last night the first guest, a female
comic [who's name I forget!] was telling Rove about one of her births, how
it was a home water birth in a pool provided by her midwife, [thats
right listeners - the word midwife was used on prime time tv!!] how she was
walking naked about her backyard holding on to the clothes lines and
groaning for all to see!! Rove's face was priceless! He asked if she had to get
into the pool just before the baby was to be born [I think he was a little
boggled by the logistics of the whole thing!!] And she replied no, that she got
in when she felt liked it and stayed there!! How wonderful!!

Then this morning on ye old Bert Newton, they had
Frankie J Holden on and his wife Kate has just had a beautiful baby girl,
Georgia. Bert was talking to Frankie and they cut to Kate and the bub who where
in the throws of breast feeding! Fancy that, on national
television!!

I hope you are all well.
Take care.
Love
Jessica.

restraints placed on us as students with our follow throughs [grumble
grumble!!] I have now found myself 4 women happy to have me as their student

Congrats also on the breast feeding
record!

I also found the book reccomendations for
midwives in fiction excellent, i now have a very healthy xmas pressie
list!!

take care

active birthworkshops

2002-06-11 Thread J Stewart

Me again!

I have just found out about the active birth
workshops and am really keen to go, however I was wondering if anyone knew how I
could contact the organisers, and if a student discount might be
available..!?!?!

Thanks
Jessica.

Re: anyone out there!

2002-06-11 Thread J Stewart

The uni has contacted Drs surgerys, hospitals, hth
centres etc,

This effort is just me being even more pro-active
trying to find myself some women to follow!

anyone out there!

2002-06-11 Thread J Stewart

Hello All!

As many of you know I am doing the 3yr Bmid at
Flinders in Adelaide, as we now have insurance we are allowed to start following
women through there pregnancy. However, I have a problem,

I cant find any pregnant people!!!

The uni has/is advertising for ladies and Im sure I
will be able to find one or two through there, however what better place to ask
than ozmid! I have asked some pregnant people that I  know personally
and they have asked have declined. So I thought Id just put a call
out!

It involves the student attending 3 ante and 3 post
natal visits as well as observing the birth.

Thanks!
Jessica.

Re: language

2002-06-01 Thread J Stewart

I am a 1st 3yr bmid and have just finished my first clinical placement in a
hospital here in Adelaide, one that is generally for the eldery!

as the clinical was attached to a nursing subject, it was a 'nursing'
placement. at the time I was the only mid student on the ward - and didnt I
let them know!!!

I requested female patients, I had my mid id badge and took on a number of
the staff as to the pros and cons of the new course!

I didnt want to be seen as a nursing student, I dont want to be taken for a
nurse in 3 yrs (although its bound to happen) so why should I accept that
label now?!?!

so I agree language is very important!
take care

stillborn questions

2002-05-19 Thread J Stewart

hello list,

i am in the same boat as jo, who emailed the list
awhile ago about stillbirth info.

i was wondering if someone could point me in the
right direction, when/who initiated that it was better for mum to see/hold their
stillborns?

any other gems of wisdom on the subject would also
be apprecited. i have already spoken to sands and they have been very
helpful!

thanks
jessica.

Re: Prof Indemnification again

2002-05-19 Thread J Stewart

julia,

i can only give you what i know, i dare say it
would be in your best interest to hang out a little longer to hear what other
ozmiders have to say!

basically, as student we were enrolled with the
expectation to complete pracs, however the insurance expired in feb and the uni
were unable to find an australian company willing to cover us, they then went to
london and what followed was months of waiting, and getting told 'we will have
an answer for you in 48hrs' then to have the insurance company come back with
stupid questions, delaying everything again!!

what now has happened, as far as i know, the gov
along with the dhs has agreed to cover us - finally!!

this news came out last thurs, and the bmid
student got a letter from the uni on the fri telling us that
yes, we have cover. due the the public holiday here, i havent had a
chance to speak face to face with any of the lecturers
yet.

as said, this is only my picture of events and
im sure there are others out there with more info, so keep tuned and i hope
that i have helped out a bit!

good luck!
jessica.

fingers crossed!

2002-05-16 Thread J Stewart

hello all,

as a 3yrd adelaide bmid-der i was overjoyed to
hear/read today that the gov/dept human ser. are footing the bill for our
insurance,

or so thats what i believe/have heard so far (then
again i have just come off a 8.5hr clinical placement at the
repat looking after patients no less than 75!!, yep lotsa babies
thereanyway!!)

im sure there will be more developments as time
goes on, just thought id put this out there!

hope you are all well
take care
love jessica.

its started!!

2002-03-27 Thread J Stewart

something for us bmid-ders to look forward to!

I encountered my first negative clinical experiance
today! I was visiting my aunt in an adelaide hospital and it came up that i was
studying mid

her "oh, so youre a nurse"
me "no, its the new 3yr bmid"
her "ahhh" [THAT tone]
me "yes, its great, its the 1st yr"
her "have you ever had children"
[typical]
me "no"
her " ahhh" [!!] "ever seen a natural
birth"
me "no"
her [you guessed it..] "ahh."

then...this one's for you Jackie
!!!

her "ive had two babies, they were pretty easy. I
guess im lucky"

I cant wait to get out there and show the critics
that the new breed of midwives is here to stay!!

have a good easter all!

jessica.

Re: Hep B and health care workers

2002-03-14 Thread J Stewart

I went and had my 1st hep b today (go me!)

I was told in class that as bmid students on clinical placements, they
cannot force us to have them done althought it would be in our best
interests. I was also told that some hospitals/services will not employ you
if you havent had the shots!
