[ozmidwifery] Elective c-section article

2007-01-30 Thread spahl
http://www.mydr.com.au/default.asp?article=3614

I just read this article on why a woman chose an elective c-section. She
refers to it as being the civilised way to give birth. How awful and I
can't believe it was published.

RE: [ozmidwifery] Fund rebates

2007-01-29 Thread spahl
There must be quite some variation between health funds then. My HF
covers confinement and delivery at home as long as the care is provided by
a registered midwife in private practice. I might actually call them
today and find out if they have a list of midwives who they deal with.

Sam.

I can add to this outrage. I am a naturopath and as such could not assist
any of my pregnant patients to birth their babies. I had to go the
circuitous route and study first as an RN then 1 year postgrad to become
 a
midwife. Now, after this four years, as a midwife I cannot claim rebate
from the system that trained me, but as a naturopath I can. How bizzare
 is that?

The voters can and the members of Health Funds can. We midwives cannot.
 We
independent midwives have all been trying for years and years. Sometimes
the
ACMI has a go, but all to no avail so far. MM

   _

This is totally unacceptable and bloody outrageous - how can we change
this???!!

Kristin

Medicare does not recognise Midwives as 'professionals' competent or
capable of practicing without the supervision of a doctor in Australia.
Therefore it will not recompense any services provided by them to
 pregnant
women.
HOWEVER: The exception is when working in a remote community :
in which case you don't even have to be a midwife to provide pre-natal
care, enrolled nurses aboriginal health workers with NO mid education
 are
considered quite competent to provide maternity care which medicare will
refund for as long as they are supervised (however loosely) by a doctor
(who
of course knows much more about normal pregnancy childbirth then any
midwife) !

If Midwives were as qualified as a chiropractor, chiropodist,
 naturopath,
herbalist etc then they would get recognition.
It would appear that we just aren't up to scratch !!!
Our skills whilst working within a hospital immediately disappear once
 we
step off the premises apparently.
 Amazing stuff !

I rang medicare this this week to see on any level particually
medicare
16400, if they would fund childbirth education classes.
 Unfortuantely
they don't. They suggested ringing hte major health funds, I haven't
gotten there yet, but wuold be interested to know too...

   Rachael

Now all you work from home and have your own business midwives can
you
please tell me how I am able to offer health fund rebates IF I
decided
to
fun my own business from home I have been thinking of it for a
while -
not homebirths as such cause I want insurance for that but other
midwifery
   services that I can offer?

Re: RE: [ozmidwifery] homebirth costs

2006-11-18 Thread spahl
I have found this topic quite an eye-opener, particularly as someone who
hopes to practice independently after finishing my degree. It makes me
feel sad that midwifery is so undervalued that midwives are only expected
to be allowed to recoup costs and nothing else. Midwifery is a passion as
well as a profession. Just because midwives feel passionate about their
profession shouldn't mean that they have to operate a charity, nor should
they be expected to.
It is up to the government to pull up their socks and start offering
better midwifery models and funding rather than midwives providing it at
their own personal expense.

Cheers,
Sam.

As a result of all this information, I spoke with a woman who wants a
second homebirth, her first she was charged the cost of fuel to get to her
for visits etc. I mentioned $2500 and she was taken aback. She said to me
, Ï understand you need to cover costs but truly I think she has no real
idea of the true value. This woman lives a 11/2 hour drive from me and
said she will shop around. I wished her luck. It is difficult asking for
money, and difficult getting a response such as this where effectively
they did not pay previously, Cath

How come there is such a big difference? I mean, that is a really BIG
 difference!!

Midwives have always worked altruistically and undervalued their
services. It takes an enormous emotional step for midwives to believe
they are worth it. If midwives actually ask for this larger payment,
would women still want to have their services?

And then again midwives want women to be able to afford their services.
Women now have an income from the Government that would pay for the
midwife, but many parents see this as a payment to relieve the mortgage,
clear debt or buy a big TV. It is more complex than just putting up the
 fees. MM

Approx $2000-$2500 here in SA I think, from what I know anyway.

Same in WA. MM

Re: [ozmidwifery] Pap smears while pregnant?

2006-11-16 Thread spahl
Thanks Brenda and Megan.

I recently heard a (first hand) story about a girl in early pregnancy
suffering a miscarriage immediately after a PS was done. Apparently the
instruments used were smeared with blood and she started to miscarry
immediately? Understandably, she is very upset and believes the GP may
have somehow caused it. The GP has said it was a very unfortunate
coincidence. Not being a midwife(yet!), I was unsure about the safety of
PS during preg., and whether it would be possible for a miscarriage to
occur as a result.

Regards,
Sam.

Yes, they are safe to do in pregnancy however if I remember correctly they
are only performed in the second trimester, or 8 weeks postpartum.

Is it safe to have a PS whilst pregnant and is there any risk with
 having
it done - particularly in early pregnancy?

 Regards,
 Sam.

RE: [ozmidwifery] BFing lactose intolerant babies.

2006-10-25 Thread spahl
Mother hasn't had the tests done yet, but Dr suspects lactose intolerance.
This is mums 3rd bub. She has BF the first two and is disappointed that
she may have trouble with this one. At this stage she is trying to arm
herself with information and has been advised by Dr. to cut down on dairy
products.
I have passed on the kellymom site - thankyou.

Cheers,
Sam

Are you sure the baby is truly lactose intolerant? Sometimes it is that mo
has oversupply, and correct management will make the symptoms disappear.
 Nicole.
