Hi all,

Just a quick reminder that HBAW is
looming again – Oct 25th – 31st.

If each of you could organise some
sort of awareness raising in your own communities or have the local paper cover
a homebirth story and write to Tony Abbott asking for affordable access to
homebirth it would be a wonderful start.

I had big ideas of screening
Birthrites and having an education day in Sydney,
unfortunately my dear mum passed away without warning and way too prematurely
and I don’t have the energy or enthusiasm to get something off the ground
at present. Would be wonderful if anyone who does have the energy could
organise something and let HBA know what you are doing so we can advertise it
on our website.

Warm regards

Hi all,

Just a reminder that homebirth awareness week is
looming - Oct 25th – 31st. If you are part of a
homebirth group or forum perhaps you’d like to organise something.

We are holding a facilitated workshop for mums,
mums-to-be, childbirth educators, doulas, midwives or anyone who is interested
in the process of birth and motherhood.

Come along for a fun day of expressive art making and
discover some soulful art techniques to help you to learn to let go and release
in your life. Be it in birth, motherhood or in your work.

The workshop will be facilitated by Karin McKay.
Karin is a mother of 4, childbirth educator and facilitates the Women’s
Room.

The cost for the day is $20. This will cover all materials used as well as a light
lunch. Breastfed non mobile babies are welcome; however it may be difficult
with toddlers or older children.

Come along and take some time out, re-energize and
create some beautiful expressive art.

Please book and make payment as places are limited.
You may pay by money order or cheque – please make payable to HAS and
send to

PO Box
 66 Broadway NSW 2777

Phone Jo on 47 51 9840 or email:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Any ideas for press coverage would be great so that
we are actually creating an awareness in the community about homebirth.

Cheers

Jo

Hi
all,
Just writing to
remind you that Homebirth Awareness week is coming up - 25th - 31st October. The
National Homebirth Conference in Perth coincides with HBAW this year. If you'd
like to do something in your community to celebrate and help educate, now is the
time to get the ball rolling. Homebirth Access Sydeny in the past have held a
family picnic with stalls and kids activities, an info day about Homebirth with
different speakers, set up a homebirth table at local libraries, had stalls at
markets. Use your imagination and contact your local rag to cover the
story.
If you'd like to
email something to me about what you or your group plan to do I'll have our
website person add it to our events page.

Hi Claire, I guess whatever suits is fine, but National Homebirth Week has
traditionally been the last week of October, the week in which Halloween
falls. The important thing is that you have organised something and there
will hopefully be lots of women & families there to demonstrate their
solidarity re choices being available for childbirth. Regards, MM

Dear List,

I have organised a picnic in the park called Choices for Childbirth. It is
on Oct 19th, 12 noon at the kids cycle track in Centennial Park. I am
hoping to get a good turnout to highlight women's right to choose where they
have their babies, and their right to have it re-imbursed by the state.

I have a press release if anyone would like to pass it on, and I would love
it if anyone could possibly come along - the more people the more
highlighted it will be.

Thanks,

Hi Denise,
This sounds fantastic. I'd LOVE to do a
presentation on 'siblings at homebirth' from a parents perspective and
discussing ways to prepare older children etc. as well as give a bit
of a wrap about HAS also. Let me know if this could work out.
Could you send me some info off list [EMAIL PROTECTED] so that I can
add it to the next issue of Birthings - it's going to print at the end of
the week so I need it asap.
Look forward to seeing your new venue

Title: Re: [ozmidwifery] Homebirth Awareness Week

Hi All

I am unaware of what Denise is presenting but we need to promote homebirth in Homebirth Awareness Week, it is so important, we get so little coverage as it is, swampped by the Obs insurance campaign and the elective caeser hype.

These are not ideas for presentations but more ideas for media and public awareness campaigns

Some ideas are the many women “going it alone” and the discrepancy between the Department of Health stats and the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages.  Another important feature is the consumer protection legislation the NSW Healthcare Liability Act that requires all health practitioners to hold professional indemnity insurance as a consumer protection measure and yet no protection for women that choose to take responsibility for themselves and their babe by birthing at home.

In the UK women are protected by legislation that they must be able to have a homebirth should they wish to, so much for choice here!  Also we have our indigenous sisters that so much want to birth at “home” on their country and this basic cultural right is denied them.  They are instead shipped to a major centre as early as 30 weeks mostly with little support.  And so much for obstetrics being the saviour, the indigenous perinatal deaths are still very high and double that of New Zealand.

In the UK women are now required to understand the facts of different modes of birth and that C/s is 4-5 more dangerous than normal vaginal birth, and yet  A Current Affair and the Head of RANZCOG will sit there and say C/s is the safest way to give birth!

Some ideas and I will put out a national press release from Homebirth Australia

In solidarity

Subject: [ozmidwifery] Homebirth Awareness Week

Hi all,
Just a reminder that Homebirth Awareness Week is looming..October 25th - 31st. Should anyone like to organise something to raise awareness of homebirth in their community please go for it.
HAS in the past have organised a family picnic with stalls, jumping castle and face painting and lots of media coverage and taken out stalls at local markets. Hunter Homebirth are holding some seminars on the benefits of homebirth. We are thinking of approaching our local libraries and setting up unmanned stalls for the week with flyers, info and photo's.
If anyone would like to organise something it can be advertised in 'Birthings' free of charge. I realise that HAS is a Sydney based organisation, however we do have interstate and international members.
Happy homebirthing!
Jo Hunter

Motherhood Mysteries about the inner experience of becoming/being a mother.
