ideas is to ring the Queensland university admissions centre, ( not sure what it

is called up there) but most applicants apply through one of these

centres.&nbsp; However, before you do either, find out if any of the unis are

going to bring in a Bach of Midwifery course.&nbsp; Not only am I jealous of

those doing this marvellous course in Vic and SA, but it will save you 1 whole

year of uni and quite possibly $5000 in HECS fees.</FONT></DIV>

New to the group with lots of questions!

  Hi Everyone!

My name is Rachael and I am new to the group. I have recently
decided to become a midwife but I need some help because I am not 100%
sure how to go about it.

I am in Queensland. I read on the Queensland University of
Technology site that you have to become a registered nurse, work as a
nurse for a minimum of one year and then you can do your bachelor of
midwifery. I understand that bit but I am not quite sure how to get
into uni. I did not do year 11 or 12. I think I have a choice
out of doing a bridging course or the Adult Tertiary Prep. course at
TAFE. Does any one know anything about bridging courses? What
kind of grade do I need to get into nursing? I am leaning towards
the ATP course but I am not sure which electives to choose, which 4 would
you recommend out of - Literature, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Biology,
Physics, Pure Mathematics and Computing for academic purposes? Also,
I am a mum of twoso I was wondering if it is much harder to do a uni
course externallyrather than internally? Any other advise
  would be greatly appreciated!

  Thanks,
  Rachael

Re: [ozmidwifery] New to the group with lots of questions!

2003-01-20 Thread Jennifer Semple
Hi Rachel,

I'm a Bachelor of Midwifery student @ Victoria Uni, in Melbourne.

My understanding is that if your do nursing first, after that you can
do a graduate dipolma in midwifery. You could do the Bachelor of
Midwifery instead of the grad dip, but the bmid is 3 years (though
you'd probably get some subject exemptions from doing nursing) the
grad dip is 18 months.

Also, to my knowledge, the BMid is not being offered outside of SA or
VIC at present. You might want to clarify w/ the uni.

I'm not sure about pathways to get in to uni in terms of bridging
courses stuff, I would think that the uni would have some answers for
you or atleast be able to point you in the right direction.

The Australian College of Midwives has some info about the BMid on
their site, I think. They're @ www.acmi.org.au

Please correct me if anyone has any different info!

Hope this helps, Rachel.

Kind regards, Jen
