LogKB.com

2009-12-21 Thread Darren Neimke
Hi guys, a while ago I talked about building some tools to help with
managing SharePoint logs. I have a website up and running now:

http://www.logkb.com/

You can read the About page to get the overview of how this solution works:

http://www.logkb.com/Home/About

That page also contains a link to the latest client agent build. Download
that latest build - running it is simple, unzip, change a couple of config.
value, and run it.

Kind Regards,

Thanks Darren, this is exactly what we needed, not just the tool but
also a platform to share solutions to log errors.

Thanks again J

Thanks Paul, feel free to ping me offlist if you have any questions.

There's obviously a stack of development still to be done - particularly
on the website. The stuff that I will be focussing on in the next few
days are:

* Adding user leaderboards showing contibution for solving log errors
* Allow users to provide rich profile information - such as consulting
advertisements
* Alerts and notifications to let users know when solutions have been
added for log messages which they have added

Again, any usage and feedback would be greatly appreciated! :-)

2009-12-21 Thread Darren Neimke

No worries, thanks Jeff! I will be using this solution as part of the
governance solution at my place of work so I will be very motivated to improve
its usability and to ensure that the data is error free. That's my commitment
to this.

Obviously the more people that use it, the more benefit we can all get from
using it though. My thinking is that there must be a relatively limited number
of log messages that can be produced (maybe 1500?), so surely we can build a
decent repository of remedies fairly quickly.

[SOLVED] Site provisioning and synching issues

2009-12-21 Thread Paul Noone
[DarrenM, this might be a good candidate for the new LogKB site.]

Hi all,

I finally have a resolution to the long-standing site provisioning issue which
was preventing the user table from being synched with the SSP. Thought I would
share it for anyone else who runs into the problem or is curious about how
something so simple can cause so much grief.

Problem

Correct provisioning fails during site creation. Couldn't nail down the cause
but MS seem to think something is failing during site creation, probably due to
customisation - provisioning features, pages etc.

Symptoms

- Site users are not updated with SSP Profiles.

- Generic picture placeholder where profile picture should be.

- Clicking a site user (in some cases) returns userdisp.aspx with no
redirection to Persons.aspx in My Site web app.

- My Links-My SharePoint Sites link is not populated with site.

- Similarly affected:

oMy Site-SharePoint Sites

oSave As-My SharePoint Sites

- Event log error:

Confirm synch failure
If you receive some or all of the above symptoms and want to confirm synching
issues, open the SiteSynch table in the SSP content database and look for any
sites with NULL values in the LastSynch and ChangeToken columns. Similarly,
sites with Moving set to TRUE may also experience these symptoms.

Resolution

- Backup content DB containing site(s).

- Run the following query on the Webs.dbo for the relevant content DB.

oRunning this command on a site with no issues will not cause any harm.

oAfter running the command the root site's Flags value should be updated to

- Under Flags column check for bad values (291, 1315) which indicate the
site was not properly provisioned.

oThere are many possible values for good and bad sites but no public list
is available. I've asked MS Support if they can supply one to me which contains
the most common values and a meaningful description.

- Run the proc_markWebAsProvisioned Stored Procedure for each affected
site, passing in the relevant WebID.

oThe WebID value is a misnomer and actually refers to the SiteID column of
the Webs table.

oRight-=clicking the stored procedure and clicking execute will return no
rows affected. You need to run the query in full by pasting the following into
a new query:

EXEC proc_markWebAsProvisioned '[SiteID]'

Subject: Export / Generate Permission levels

Hi All

Just wondering if there's a smart way to generate a list / report on site
hierarchy and permission levels.
I need to create a report on the entire site collection as to who has
permissions to what.

SPManager has a tree view of the sites and I can see the permissions but I cant
export that information,
And I was hoping there might be something else out there what I could use.

Regards,

Marko
