RE: Custom theme not inheriting on team site

2009-07-09 Thread Paul Turner
Have you checked all the paths in the theme... you cannot really use relative
paths because you don't know how deep the site will be in the site structure.

i.e. having an image like this:won't work
when the site is more than one level down.

Subject: Custom theme not inheriting on team site

I have publishing site using a custom theme. In this site I have a site
collection based on team site template but this one does not show the theme.

If I see the settings of team site, it shows custom theme as selected but does
not apply it.

Other site collections based on publishing template display the theme only team
site ones do not.

Can anyone help how to fix this.

Hi Ajay,

Team Site is not a publishing template. Is it using a different master page by
any chance? Reason I ask is because I intentionally remove the theme tag from
my custom master pages to prevent use of them.

Re: Custom theme not inheriting on team site

2009-07-09 Thread Sezai Komur
That is probably it, when you create a new Team Site it doesn't have the
custom Master Page applied by default. You might be able to navigate to the
home page of the site collection and re-apply your custom Master and select
it to be inherited by all subsites which might switch it for the team sites
and solve the problem.

2009-07-12 Thread Paul Culmsee
For me, a stapled feature to an OOTB def for auto-theming is the lesser evil
or a complete custom site def. I know someone who wrote a feature to do this
but I'm not sure if he released it. Ping me privately if it is of interest
and I will ask my friend.

(In fact this example was how I learned how feature stapling worked)

Hi Paul/Sezai,

how to get new sites to default to the correct theme, as some users are

On the page that sets the master page, the tick box to enable all child
sites to inherit the master page does not stay ticked. When you navigate

hence new sites don’t inherit the settings.

How can I make sure these settings stay ticked?

And by "new sites" do you mean My Sites (which are created automatically using
the default template) or user-created sites via newsbweb.aspx?

If you're referring to the latter than you could provide one or more custom
site definitions globally and just insist that they use it.

RE: Custom theme not inheriting on team site

2009-07-12 Thread Paul Noone
Hi Ajay,

The term "site template" gets sued quite a bit and can refer to both templates
and definitions. Which makes everything very confusing for the uninitiated. :)

Site templates can be created from the "Save site as template" link on the
settings page for any non-publishing site.

Site definitions live in the /12/TEMPLATE/SiteTemplates/ and, as you can see,
are also referred to as templates. These can have their own set of problems and
require programming, or at least good copying skills ;).

Rather than go down this path, have you taken a look at the SharePoint Site
Configurator Feature<http://spsiteconfigurator.codeplex.com/>? I'm not sure if
it can set the theme but it's worth a look.

This is not for My sites but other sites using different templates.
Can you please elaborate little on custom site definition..

This is for client of mine and they are building intranet on their own.. am not
sure if they will have skills to create custom site defs..

the default template) or user-created sites via newsbweb.aspx?

If you're referring to the latter than you could provide one or more custom
site definitions globally and just insist that they use it.

Hi Paul/Sezai,

This worked fine and we could retrofit the theme to sites already created.

Now the next question/problem is

how to get new sites to default to the correct theme, as some users are
allowed to create sites (because they wont have the understanding or
permissions to go and edit master page settings).

On the page that sets the master page, the tick box to enable all child sites
to inherit the master page does not stay ticked. When you navigate away from
the page then re-open it, the settings have "undone" themselves - hence new
sites don't inherit the settings.

How can I make sure these settings stay ticked?

Thanks
Ajay

I have publishing site using a custom theme. In this site I have a site
collection based on team site template but this one does not show the theme.

If I see the settings of team site, it shows custom theme as selected but does
not apply it.

Other site collections based on publishing template display the theme only team
site ones do not.

Can anyone help how to fix this.

Agreed, go with feature stapling. Even though that blog talks about My Sites
you can use the same concept for automatically applying a theme, master page
or custom css url for newly created sites of any type.
You need two features.
1) Create a Feature Stapling Feature which is a Feature that tells
SharePoint to automatically activate another feature whenever a site of a
specific type is created. (similar to
http://www.vanolstweb.nl/blog/images/designstaplingxml.jpg)
2) Create a Feature to change the theme, master page or css url, when the
feature is activated (similar to
http://www.vanolstweb.nl/blog/images/featureactivated.jpg).

RE: Custom theme not inheriting on team site

2009-07-13 Thread Paul Noone
Hi Ajay,

I almost forgot. There's a feature on Codeplex that already does this I
believe. If it doesn't get you all the way then it may at least prove to be a
good starting point for your own.

Theme Changer and ThemeChangerStaple
This feature changes the site theme and alternate style sheet to those
specified in the FEATURE.XML file.
http://features.codeplex.com/

They really need to get some more info up for each of these.
