Kathy, you wrote: Hi, all! Thanks for the advice. As I was looking at this Olympus DM-1 I came upon something that blew my mind: the OlympusDM-20. Anyone know anything about it and how useful it is for a blind person? Well, it only has one socket for audio input and output. It is difficult if not impossible to use an external microphone and headphones at the same time with the DM-20. Kathy! For a couple of years now the Sony MZB-100 has been the portable hi-fidelity recorder of choice for blind people. It's one big drawback is that you can't transfer it's recordings to computer except through recording them again on the computer. The newer models will have this data transfer feature. RE: MP3 Ipod
Hi. Unfortunately, the Ipod isn't very accessible. All the buttons on the newer units are touch-sensitive, and provide no tactile feedback. This might not be insurmountable, but the unit will not speak. The only sounds that'll be coming out of it will be those of the mp3, once you play it. Further, the software isn't very accessible. To the best of my knowledge, you must use the Itunes software (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this, as I heard some rumblings about Apple switching to a less proprietary interface, but am not sure if that happened or is going to). There are better and more accessible players. If accessibility is important to you, and you want to play only MP3 files, try some of the units from Archos. These units, with the help of an alternative firmware called Rockbox http://rockbox.haxx.se speak their menus, as well as spelling file names and speaking the names of folders. If you want to play more formats, like OGG and WMA, your best bet is to go with one of the Iriver units http://www.iriveramerica.com which, though they do not speak their menus or file/folder names, are good players and will play more formats than the Archos units. Both units come in the same capacities as the Ipod and, as a side benefit, are usually far cheaper. Hello Doc, What I am trying to do is record my screen reading program while it is reading a document or html document. I am legally blind and can't read the print. I have downloaded a few books in text format and would like to record my screen reading voice to a audio file so I can put it on a disk and make it portable. The computer is much too heavy to carry around. Do you know how I can acomplish this? Like I said earlier I was able to get the sound recorder under accessories/entertainment to do this but it is a really bad coppy when played back in Windows media player 9 There seams to be alot of static in the play back. Is this because of the Windows Media player or the actual recording? Hi. It is true that Archos is no longer producing the players that work with the accessible rockbox firmware. However, many of these are available both used and new from Ebay. I've also heard of a few people in the UK buying them new from there and am sure that, with persistence, American online suppliers may be found. But I'm wondering if anyone knows if the dm10 is more similar to the dm1 than it is to the dm20? I'm also gathering that the dm1 is pretty blind user friendly? Re: I found a winamp plug in to read text files!!!
You will need to configure it with the sample and bit rate you want, the higher the better. You can fine it under input plugins under preferences. Dee Jay Microphone recommendations...
Hello PC Audio Listers! I am a novice Dee Jay, looking for recommendations for microphones, for shoutcasting, live radio broadcasting, etc. I have heard of the Electrovoice RE 20 and some other R C A mikes. I know very little about what I am doing with all of this, but it might be sufficient to say that I plan to create my broadcasts on CD, using playlists, crossfading and the like, in order to keep my broadcasts rather hands free. Any suggestions?
