stereo bluetooth headset

2005-04-18 Thread PETE gurney
hello all,

sorry but i can't remember who posted the original question about the
availability of stereo bluetooth headsets, but i came across the following
this morning whilst looking for something else.

Toshiba has unveiled a pair of wireless headphones that hook up to a host
PC across
a Bluetooth 1.2 link.
Designed for the company's Qosmio home entertainment-oriented laptop range,
the 90g
(3.2oz) 'over-the-ear and round-the-back-of-your-head' 'phones will also
work with
any notebook or desktop that sports a Bluetooth 1.2 adaptor, such as the
one Toshiba
sells.
The wireless link gives smooth stereo playback at up to 30ft, the company
claimed.
The 'phones will pair with only one device at a time, though Toshiba said
they can
be re-connected to another device at the push of both volume buttons. That
suggests
the 'phones can store the details of multiple devices, much as today's
Bluetooth
mobile phone headsets can, though Toshiba didn't say how many devices the
'phones
will remember.
The right-hand speaker unit also features volume controls, and track-skip
buttons.
There's room in there for a battery too, one that's large enough to provide
up to
eight hours' play time.
Interestingly, the Toshiba 'phones appear to be virtually identical to the
set HP
announced in November 2004 as a wireless add-on for its multimedia iPaq
PDAs. Toshiba's
Wireless Stereo Headphones go on sale on 9 February in the US for $100. The
company's
Bluetooth 1.2 adaptor costs $50. ®

Re: Understanding frequency

2005-04-18 Thread Bobcat
I have a suggestion for learning what different frequencies sound like. Get
some kind of parametric equalizer. This type of equalizer lets you home in
on a range of frequencies and boost or cut them. I like to boost a range
then sweep that range up and down the spectrum to hear how boosting
different areas of music sounds.

If I have a sound that seems to have a nasty peek, I like to sweep up and
down till that nasty peek gets even nastier. Then I try cutting the level
and sweep till I get a sweeter sound.

I don't have a hardware parametric equalizer so I use the software version
built in to Sound Forge. It isn't quite as easy to use as a hardware
version with knobs and sliders but at least it tells me what frequencies are
being effected.

Hi, guys, exactly as the subject suggests. What is the best way to
understand frequency. Especially when listening to a project to remove or
add one. In other words, it's been said that you can remove certain
frequency on a project, such as a vocal trak; first, how would you
identify that frequency and remove it, or, identify what you need and keep
 it.

O/T Hand-Held Digital Recorders--what's your fave?

2005-04-18 Thread Steve Matzura
I do love bleeding-edge technology for certain things, but personal,
sometimes referred to as ephemeral data is not one of them. For notes
I still use a pocket slate and stylus, but for anything that's longer
than will fit on a business card, I have been known to rely on tech,
most notably some kind of digital voice recorder. I gave up on tapes
years ago, as I believe most folks have by now.

About eight years ago, maybe just a little less, I bought a Panasonic
recorder that turned out to be quite useful and reasonably acessible.
Somebody recorded the manual, and it made the rounds of the blindness
community, and folks seemed to like it well enough. I don't remember
the model number, but if you had one, I'm sure you know which one I'm
talking about.

Then there was the VoiceMate craze. My wife and I each bought one, but
neither of us could ever get them to work correctly, even when trying
them in totally sound-proofed environments, like inside our coat
closet at home with all the winter coats acting as sound-proofing! So
we have two VoiceMates rotting away on the shelf here.

Then five years ago a non-blind friend of mine bought an Olympus
digital voice recorder (I'll call them DVR's from here on out) and it
turned out to be very accessible but very unavailable. So I looked
around and settled on what I thought was going to be a good unit from
Sony. It came with Dragon Dictate, all sorts of notes management
software that I could never get to work right, etc., etc. I use it
occasionally, when I can remember how it works, which isn't very
often.

Then I heard about some other blind-user-friendly DVR that recorded in
high quality, stereo even, with USB-based file transfer to and from a
PC, useful for field recordings, etc. Of course, now that I want one,
no one I know knows what happened to the company that made them, so
I'm thinkin', another one bites the dust.

My job situation is changing, and I'm finding I need to record more
things usually faster than I can whip out a pocket slate and stylus
from a suit coat pocket or laptop carry bag, so I'm once again in the
market for yet another DVR. I don't want to get into a big discussion
of whose widget is better than whose, but if folks who use these
things on a regular basis could just drop me a private message telling
me what you like and why, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Using Goldwave with JAWS

Hello.
It has been almost three years since I last had occasion to use my shareware
version of Goldwave 4.26, and I have forgotten the keystroke shortcut to
start recording a sound, once I have created and configured a sound file.
Also, how do I set line-in as the default input source?

Thank you.

Hi. DJC recommended mediarecorder to me and I can't say enough about it! I
think it's pretty much limited to winamp and the streams you can pick up
with winamp, but DJC can correct me if I'm wrong there. It was a little
tricky to figure out the jaws commands when entering times, but once I got
it I really have had no trouble.

I also have total recorder which I think is more versatile as far as working
with media player and winamp, but I've not been able to figure out how to
get it to connect to the station. Setting the record and timer functions
was easy, but I can't get it to connect to the stream and I've asked for
help here but didn't get a response.

I don't have the exact website I got mediarecorder from, but I did a google
search and it took me to a download site.

You use ctrl-f9 to launch the recording; keystrokes are all summarized in

/There is a program called Station Ripper that cancopy shoutcast streams and
some podcasts. There is an IE browser that is accessible to choose your
stations but other things are not that accessible. There is a button
somewhere so you can listen as you record. You cannot schedule a recording,
at least I haven't found a way to. One thing I like is that if it is an
internet only station it will save the songs as their own files with the
files given the titles, etc. of the songs. If it is a real radio station,
then you will get an incomplete file as they call it. You can still listen
to it, etc. It will just have the name of the station as the file name. It
does not pick up your screen reader or any windows sounds but only records
what comes through. If you are on a dial up connection and try to record
something that has a faster stream, there wil probably be jumps, etc. where
the time has elapsed but has not been copied. check it out at:

RE: recording live streams.

2005-04-18 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
There are many ways to record all sorts of live streams. The most
often used, and simplest, is through a program like Total Recorder
http://www.totalrecorder.com
which will record the live stream as it plays. Alternatively, a
program like Stream Down
http://stream-down.cocsoft.com
or offline explorer from
http://www.metaproducts.com
will download the real/wma file to your hard drive and you can then
listen to it, convert it to MP3, etc. The advantage this has over Total
Recorder and other programs like it is that one need not hear the live
stream as it downloads. One can download the stream and listen later.

Hi, Steve

If it's just quick notes you want to take on the hoof, what about using a
mobile phone with Talks which has a voice recorder incorporated - the one I use
is the Nokia 6600? This wouldn't be any use for long-term storage, so you'd
need to trnsfer your notes elsewhere but for quick, short-term use, it should
serve the purpose!

CD rewritables can be used multiple times, where as cd-r's can only be
recorded on once, hence the turm write once read many. But the only drawback
to the rw format is that you can only play them on a stereo system that
supports that particular configuration of cd.
Take an extra moment when you find yourself at piece, to think about your

reason, I don't sseem to have the cue files mentioned.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Or is there a more speech friendly prog than mp3+toolz I can use for this
job.
Any help with burning these files would be really very helpful indeed.

Goldwave Question

2005-04-18 Thread Gary G. Schindler

I am considering using Goldwave instead of Sound forge because of it's
affordable price, so I want to know if you can insert silence at the beginning
and end of a file?

Re: cdg .mp3 files

2005-04-18 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi
I've changed the subject line so it's a bit more descriptive, these
files? really doesn't describe what's going on.

Why not just burn them to a data cd?
I mean, if everything I've learned over the years is true and you burn them
to a data cd, and if you have a suitable player that can play these things,
you should be just fine. or hell, if you can find a player that will play
them, you should be good to go. i don't know where you got the advice that
they have to be converted to a .bin file to be burned to a cd, that doesn't
seem right to me. but then again I've never worked with the file type
before so maybe it's the one instance that's different about this whole
thing, all i can think of is to just burn the files to a data cd and
it should work fine, no conversion should be needed.

are you trying to actually convert these things to mp3 files that you can
play in Winamp or some other kind of audio player? Seems like you're taking
the long way round.

Re: recording live streams.

2005-04-18 Thread patricknc
Maybe I'm misunderstanding here, but, Carliss, are you asking how to use
those 3 players to record live streams? if so, the answer is that you cant.
Programs like Winamp, Realplayer, and Windows Media Player are just that,
players. You can't use them for recording. As far as recorders are
concerned, I have nothing to add to what has already been said. You have a
good choice of programs here. I've heard that MP3 Direct cut also can do
it, but I haven't tried it.

 Hi.
There are many ways to record all sorts of live streams. The most
often used, and simplest, is through a program like Total Recorder
 http://www.totalrecorder.com
which will record the live stream as it plays. Alternatively, a
 program like Stream Down
 http://stream-down.cocsoft.com
 or offline explorer from
 http://www.metaproducts.com
will download the real/wma file to your hard drive and you can then
listen to it, convert it to MP3, etc. The advantage this has over Total
Recorder and other programs like it is that one need not hear the live
stream as it downloads. One can download the stream and listen later.

I listen to so much live streaming and I really would like to hear it
