Portable Hard-Disk-Based Audio Players

2005-12-09 Thread Steve Matzura
This may be more a topic for the guispeak list, but here goes.

Does anyone know if any progress has been made to make Palms talk? I
just saw an audio player that does just about everything--no playlists
required, has gapless and crosssfading capabilities, two different
kinds of bookmarks (user-definable and auto-restart), ... just about
all the really good features. But it runs on a Palm!

Hi there!
I don't know about the palm OS, but the pocket pc which is the
equivalent of Microsoft and there is great audio software for that is
accessible. There are two screen readers for that, pocket hal from
Dolphin systems, and mobile speak pocket from Code factory.
I haven't tested any of them myself, but pocket hal looks very
promissing from a demonstration that I heard recently.

Hello, Andre. Yes, I believe you might be able to use yahoo messenger with
your version of Jaws. I have Jaws 5.0 and am able to instant message with a
couple of people. It does take some getting used to but after awhile you
can do it. I got yahoo messenger this summer and I really like it. The
only thing I don't know how to do yet is the call setup.

Hi all

Is it possible to use yahoo messenger with JFW 6.2?

I have a friend with whom I correspond regularly. Her connection is so slow
that Skype does not seem to function properly. She seems to be able to use
yahoo messenger though.

However, I find that this messenger is not the easiest to use with speech.
E.g. the menu bars do not seem to work correctly in Jaws.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Roden. Which type of microphone is best to use for calling with yahoo
messenger? I have a headset but I can only find one place in the back of
the computer where you'd plug in a microphone. The only other place I can
use for the earphone part is the speaker where you'd normally put earphones.

listen to, it's a fine machine. The one-button control is a bit of a
bear, though. Press it once this way to go this direction, press
twice to skip by file; press it once the other way to go in some other
direction, click the center portion of the button to do some other
thing ... madness. If I could just memorize what does what in which
direction, I'd be OK, but what I think it should be and what it is are
unfortunately two different things! Good luck with the 340. at least
it'll have more buttons than the 120 does.

I'll have to look for a sound card that features an auto gain

Hi Rose!

I use a generic head pset which has a microphone. May be you can ask some
people in the lists to suggest a best microphone for you to use.

Re: Hard Disk-based MP3 Player

2005-12-09 Thread Ken Burgess
Hi list,

I've been looking at some iRiver players, and came across the H10 series.
There is an H10 that has a 20GB drive, which is a little more suited to my
actual needs than the H340.

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with these players especially with
regard to navigation. The descriptions *sound* quite similar.

Hey Nektarios, thanks for this, after reading a lot of manuals and

I ended up buying the Iriver H340 as well and am looking forward to it.

 I have the older IHP120 and, once I find what I'm looking for to
 listen to, it's a fine machine.

Noise reduction for winamp

2005-12-09 Thread Brent Harding
I want to listen to one of my favorite FM stations that I moved too far away
from, and alas the streaming is back. What Winamp plugin can I use to reduce
this high-frequency tone that they seem to be sending with the streaming
signal? It is at least a 64k shoutcast stream. The tone seems to move
through the stereo image in a weird pattern. It is puzzling why this would
show up on the stream but not on the radio when I can hear the station in a
car and it sounds nice with no tone there. They do have a little AC hum you
can hear when the DJ is talking, even on the radio, and no music is on but
that is more tolerable than this tone that is exclusive to the stream. Of
course anything I do could reduce quality somewhat but it would be good to
reduce the tone. I just wonder what they could've done that creates this
into the stream, don't know of a wiring problem that would give me something
close.

Winamp 5.12 released

2005-12-09 Thread Marty Rimpau
Hi all
Ok, there is yet another new version out, but do not let the version
number confuse you! This version is 5.12, where as the previous
version
was 5.112. *shrugs* I don't knoow how those guys at Nullsoft figure
out
their numbering conventions, but in either case, 5.12 is just out now.

There are some significant changes and bug fixes in this version,
nothing
that should mess with screenreaders though!

Here's the What's new.
Winamp 5.12
* New: [in_wm] Windows Media Video support (with DRM)
* New: [in_mp4] Support for HE-AAC MP4/M4A files
* Improved: lots of minor plugin improvements
* Improved: Visualization data calculations
* Improved: Significantly less playlist memory usage
* Improved: more multi-user improvements (almost there!)
* Improved: [installer] setup options, saved settings, codec
downloading
* Improved: [gen_ff] optimized skinning engine
* Improved: [out_disk] new features
* Improved: [in_cdda] playback/ripping with sonic engine
* Fixed: freezing when cancelling cd burn
* Fixed: video scaling bug (with modern skin scaling 100%)
* Fixed: minor installer bugs
* Fixed: freeze when loading classic skin with main window hidden
* Fixed: Visualizations for 24bit and 32bit songs
* Fixed: Advanced Title Formatting with Japanese, Chinese and Korean
metadata (thanks mrym)
* Fixed: [in_mp3] raw AAC VBR file seeking and bitrate reporting
* Fixed: [in_mp4] unicode metadata writing
* Fixed: [in_wm/in_dshow] mms:// streaming video playback
* Fixed: [in_cdda] audio cd bitrate display
* Fixed: [in_cdda] Sonic engine on 64bit windows (thanks STanger)
* Fixed: lots of small bugs ...
* Updated: Sonic CD Engine 2.2.50
* Updated: libmp4v2 1.4.1
* Updated: Coding Technology AAC+ Decoder 7.2.0

you can download it from

http://fileforum.betanews.com/sendfile/1066336873/1/winamp512_full.exe

Yep I know, originally I recommended that people get it from the Winamp

site, but several people e-mailed me off list and convinced me that not

everything on Beta news is all beta software, so it really is safe.
Just
install over the top of your current version, and if you encounter any
problems, back up your important bookmarks, and uninstall and then
re-install from scratch.
Thanks.

Re: Noise reduction for winamp

2005-12-09 Thread Brent Harding
If it isn't the pilot tone that is causing the trouble, it has to be some
harmonic of 60 hz that a regular radio would completely eliminate so one
wouldn't hear it. How would I get winamp to decode it to make it sound
reasonably OK? I hate to not be able to listen to it as they don't really
have much like it within my indoor wire antenna range. It seems that they
took the same feed that the transmitter gets and put it into the streaming
machine's sound card as if most people would use modulaters to send it
around the house, maybe.

Wav Hammer in SF

2005-12-09 Thread Peter Scanlon
I am writing this message for a friend who is not on this list at this time.
It is about Sound Forge and its Wav Hammer function.

He has used Wav Hammer successfully in SF6 and now when he tries to use it
in version 7 of Sound Forge he gets a message saying it is a demo and it
puts in beeps every so many seconds.

AS far as we know it is not a function you need to purchas as an extra.

Any clues as to why this might happen and how to resolve it.
