Hello Brent,

On Monday, January 2, 2006, 9:31:06 PM, you bellowed the following:
No, it's a bigger oval, maybe about the size of a 50 cent piece or so. I
 don't know what to order.

Brent: I don't know what these batteries are actually called, but it's
the same thing you'd find on just about any standard motherboard for
bios backup, and some watches.

Re: Looking for a Program

2006-01-03 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Steve.

There are a couple of programs that approach what you're looking for, both
from Red Chair Software.

The first is a free program that does exactly as you request, that is,
verify that the ID3 tags are valid in your music files. It's called,
unsurprisingly and unoriginally, Red Chair's Tag Verifier. I downloaded a
copy of it when it was first released and it looked pretty good back then.

The other piece of software that you might be able to make use of is
Audigen. This is a complete music database that will allow you to load
your music and then browse by category or search on the ID3 tag values. The
additional feature of Audigen that you might find interesting is that you
can use SQL to do some pretty advanced interrogation of your music files and
export the results in excel, HTML or XML. Of course, there has to be enough
tag information to load the music in the first place but Audigen will allow
you to auto fill missing information just to get it into the database.

Below is an article that I wrote for a magazine over here in the UK that
gives you an overview of Audigen and what it can do.

Audigen - music management made easy

By Kevin Lloyd

For some considerable time I've been looking for a program that would help
me to better manage the large collection of MP3 music files that I've
collected over the last year or two.

I wanted the program to provide me with a database that could be easily
browsed and searched and that would allow me to produce reports in varying
formats such as excel spreadsheets or XML based on various criteria.

Whilst checking out the Red Chair Software website,

http://www.redchairsoftware.com/

For an update to Notmad Explorer, a program I use to transfer music to and
organise music on my creative jukebox, I came upon Audigen which on the
product specification looked like it would be just what I was looking for.

I purchased the software there and then for a measly $17 and downloaded it
immediately. Installation was a breeze - just a case of following the on
screen prompts and entering my activation code as the last step. I was
certainly impressed with what I got for that paltry amount.

This is not an exhaustive review of Audigen but will hopefully give you a
flavour of the two main components that make up the application.

Audigen Explorer is the music management engine and the main reason why I
purchased this program. The other component I'll describe briefly is
Audigen Xstreamer but more of that later.

The interface to Audigen Explorer is extremely easy to use if you're used to
working with windows explorer or My Computer. Note that there is a checkbox
in the options menu that has been put there specifically for people that
only use the keyboard for navigation that can change the layout of the
screen. Checking this checkbox will ensure that you have no problems using
Audigen Explorer with your screen reader.

On starting Audigen Explorer, you're presented with 9 folders as follows:

Audio Tracks

Search

Playlists

Artists

Albums

Genres

Last Transfer

Utilities

Device Information

Entering any of these folders will result in a view of your music
categorised as stated above by track, artist, album or genre. The search
folder will allow you to search through your music catalogue with simple or
more complex SQL based queries and playlists will display any playlists that
you may have created in Audigen Explorer.

Firstly, of course, you need to load the database. This is very easily
achieved. Simply browse to your music folder or folders using windows
explorer or My Computer and use control + C to copy either folders or
individual files to the clipboard. You can load both MP3 and WMA files into
the database. Enter the Audio Tracks folder from the main menu and then use
control + V to paste the music into the database. It's important to note
here that you won't actually be moving the files themselves in this process,
that would simply be a waste of disc space. Instead, it is the ID3 tags
that are taken from your MP3 or WMA files and used to create the database.
If you go for the try and buy option for this program, you'll be able to
load 100 files into the database and you'll have near complete functionality
to check out the program before you buy. When fully activated there are no
limitations on numbers of files loaded into the database.

Another great feature of Audigen Explorer is that it will allow you to edit
ID3 tags for those files that have missing or inconsistent tags. You can do
this both on an individual file basis or on a whole batch of files changing
artist, album or tracks names as well as genre, track number and comment
fields.

Once you've loaded your music, you can use the Audio Tracks to browse your
collection in alphabetic sequence based on artist, album and track. From
here you can build playlists, play tracks through winamp or your default
music program or copy the music files to another location.

registering Powergramo

2006-01-03 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi folks!
Yesterday I purchased a license for Powergramo, which allows you to record
skype calls, it's been mentioned on the list before I think.
The registration process however, sounds really convoluted and complicated!
From what I can tell, you get an e-mail which has a registration
code. According to the e-mail though, you have to add their powergramo
register agent to your skype contacts, which I have.
So far, it hasn't shown up, I'm not sure if it's a human being, or some
kind of bot. Either way, it's still pending authorization and the thing
hasn't shown up on my contact list yet.
So after you do that, you're supposed to take the number you got in the
e-mail and paste it into the dialogue box found in powergramo under
help/upgrade to pro. Then, somehow, I'm not sure how this works, but
somehow, the register agent sees this code, and sends you back *yet*
another code via the text chat window through skype and you use that code
to register.
Are you confused yet?
I'm just wondering if anyone has actually successfully registered this
program without difficulties? It sounds like an awesome program, but the
registration process just sounds like it's a hell of a lot more complicated
than it has to be. I've sent the support address an e-mail asking what to
do because this skype contact hasn't appeared yet, and supposedly without
it, you can't register. So if anyone has actually registered it, I'd be
interested to know your experiences.

 Hi Arthur.

Joint stereo is specifically used to enhance the sound of MP3 files that
have been ripped at a very low bit rate such as 128kbps. There is some
 math
involved in the way that the stereo information is analysed and then
 used
 to
enhance the sound but I don't have that depth of detail at hand.

Terri. I personally like the Sony dvd players. On most newer models the
play button has a dot on it so you can easily find it. I have two
models, one for the bedroom which plays one dvd and one in the living
room which plays up to five. Both of them have the same remote and are
very easy to use. The main three buttons, play, pause and stop are
located next to each other on the front and are easy to find. Above or
to the left of those depending on the model are the back and forward
buttons which are long, thin shaped ones. Definitely different feeling
than the first three I mentioned. The remote is needed to easily
navigate things like switching between audio or language tracks,
choosing a scene to quickly go to or choosing a particular episode in
the case of a tv series dvd.

The single dvd player goes for around $50 while the five dvd changer
goes for around $70 to $100 depending on where you buy it. Both these
models I have will play dvd, dvd+r, dvd-r, dvd+rw, dvd-rw, cd-r, cd-rw,
audio cd, vcd, and mp3 cd. So as you can tell they will play just about
any format disc.

I have seen these players at places like Best Buy, Circuit City and
Ebay.

Hope this helps.

Re: Sound Forge 8 and Noise Reduction Questions

2006-01-03 Thread Curtis Delzer
Sorry, but the HANDI-CASSETTE has a lot of cross talk by default,
and nothing in sound forge can correct this. A better way is to use a
regular stereo cassette dec and record tracks 1 and 4, then turn the
cassette over and then record sides 2 and 3. This will make a file
about an hour and a half long, (probably closer to about 84 or 85
minutes give or take). In SF you can press tab and get to either the
left or right side, and you wish to reverse the right channel as you
know. If you have the SF noise reduction plut-in, it is superlative
at getting rid of the hiss. The commercial cassette stereo recorder
has a much better cross talk capability, even a non expensive one.
Somehow, the HANDI-CASSETTE, in stereo, is pretty lousy in this
regard. If you use the sound forge noise reduction plut-in, use a
facility in it which lets you sample the hiss in such a way that it
is beyond the beginning of the tape and just before the narrator
begins, and save the setting. You can tweak the settings to get that
hiss up to 99 db below what it is, and if you do it right, the hiss
will be virtually gone leaving the recording even better than the
original, I know, I've done it several hundred times.

Good luck!

Curtis Delzer

I'd love to reduce some of the tape hiss I get and to reduce some of the
crosstalk that comes about when I record in stereo. (I record using a

How do I institute the plug-in that would help reduce at least the hiss if

Joint stereo is specifically used to enhance the sound of MP3 files
 that
have been ripped at a very low bit rate such as 128kbps. There is some
 math
involved in the way that the stereo information is analysed and then
 used
 to
enhance the sound but I don't have that depth of detail at hand.

 Regards.

 Kevin

Subject: Joint Stereo - what is it?

Hi, I've notice that mp3's at 128 kbps joint stereo seem to be better
quality than normal stereo mp3's. So, what is joint-stereo and why is
 the
 quality difference present?

  Thanks,

  Arthur.
