Re: gold wave can't move finish marker

2006-05-30 Thread Marijan Janev
I have enabled winamp global keys all the time and I have never had a
problem using shift+arrow and ctrl+shift+arrow in goldwave.
Probably something else is in question.
All the best!

Is there any chance you have another program that is hogging your
control+shift+right and control+shift+left keys? Maybe you have Winamp's
global keys enabled and you have set these combinations to be used there,
or some other program such as that?

The bullet for FM is multi-channel. When Fm can have two to eight
 stations
on one frequency and it is free, XM and friends will not be such a
 great
 idea.

The radios are coming down, you will be able to get one for 75 buks in
 the
 next year.

Hello the,

On Wednesday, May 31, 2006, 12:28:50 AM, you bellowed the following:
> I'm 28, and I used dos. I am not old thank you very much lol.

Likewise, I am 22 and used Dos.
Actually, I started out using a Mac 2SI (16 MHZ processor, 4 MB ram and
a 40 MB hard drive). Despite these specs, in 1992, it was able to run
software speech and play other sounds at the same time.
I then later moved to Dos on a 386 DX25 with a hard drive so old that
you still had to type "park" before shutting the machine down. Yay for
drives with no auto-parking!

the sf5 scripts come with versions of jfw 5 and later, dunno about
jfw 6 or 7, which work well with sf5. I don't know if you can get
anything like a registered version of sf5 though I have one, which
would work for you as I demo I believe, not sure.

2006-05-30 Thread Bruce Toews
Actualy I'm not all that old. You see, when I was born, my parents didn't
like noise. So instead of crying, I had to type "waa", underlined and
boldfaced, in WordPerfect, print it out, and hand it to my mother.

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-30 Thread David Tanner
It works grea so long as you get the perameters set right for the file you are
working on at the time. Just remember that you can't always assume that the
default settings are going to work. It is really great to use that and file
split together so long as you make sure to check that you didn't get a break in
the middle of a song because there was a pause long enough for Goldwave to
think it was a break. I usually extend the amount of time for silence for just
that reason.

Frankly, I wouldn't want to be without either of them. I find plenty of uses
for both, and Studio Recorder.

Audio DVD

2006-05-30 Thread David Tanner
Ok, let me show my dumbness here, and I bet half of you will know the answer to
my question.

I would like to take advantage of the amount of storage room on a DVD disk by
using in the same way as a person would use a CD. I want to make an audio DVD
that I can put into a DVD player and have it start playing the audio just like
I can do with a audio CD. Now, I have to believe that is possible, but I
certainly don't know how one would do that.

What kind of files would I need to use, and what software would I need in order
to make that happen?

Understand that I want to be able to play the disk in any DVD player, not just
on a PC. I do have a DVD player on my home theater that will play a DVD filled
with MP3s, but I am sure that wouldn't work on a portable DVD player, would it?

Re: Upload Speed for Webcasting

2006-05-30 Thread Patrick Perdue
Hello mary,

On Tuesday, May 30, 2006, 11:49:01 PM, you bellowed the following:
> At what speed should we be uploading the stream in order to
> avoid skipping?

This depends on a few things:

1. What bitrate are you currently streaming at?
2. What is your actual available upload bandwidth?
3. Are you running the server in-house or streaming to a remote server?

Upload Speed for Webcasting

2006-05-30 Thread mary dole
Hello Everyone,

I volunteer as a board operator for an internet radio reading service.
In the past few days, we have been experiencing skipping and jumping in
the audio stream. I have been told that this is due to an upload speed
which is too slow. We are streaming mostly voice and some music, but all
in mono. At what speed should we be uploading the stream in order to
avoid skipping? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Re: another radio question

2006-05-30 Thread Bob Seed
Denny,
Sure that is OK with me. I will evaluate it and let you know what I think.
You can send me a MP3 file if you wish. My wife, Pat taught speech for
broadcasting at our local community college a number of years ago.
I will let her hear it as well. As I said in a previous email just keep
knocking on doors. I spent some time in Santa Rosa about 10 years ago. If
memory serves me correctly they have a nice little station in that
community. My radio experience has been mainly in small to medium markets.
Thunder Bay is considered to be a medium size market. I think that you would
stand a better chance if you checked out the small and medium markets first.
I would imagine that Sanfrancisco would be considered to be a large market.

 Hi Rick
Status bar shows that finish marker is still in same place regardless of
 how
many times I hit control+shift+left arrow. Moving start marker works as
 it
 should.
Can you have independent zoom levels for finish and start markers?
I ask because I make the assumption that if I can move the start marker
 by
 2
second increments, the finish marker should be moved by the same amount.

Is there a setting that I should be awhere of that locks the finish
 marker?

Thank you.
I re-mapped my Winamp keys, and lo behold, I can now move my finish marker.
I guess it doesn't matter if Winamp was open or not because I never had both

 Hi,

That really doesn't indicate all that much. What happens when you get
 the
status line info? It will tell you where the markers are positioned.
 Are
you sure you have the zoom level set to a point that will move the
 markers
any amount? If the value is set too low then you may be only moving
 the
markers by 1/100 th of a second.

Re: broadcasting question

2006-05-30 Thread Chuck Adkins
Well, don't know what to say bout that one. I had to pay my way through
broadcasting school because I was supposed to be a teacher at the Blind
School or a Stand operator. I'm not sure what the answer is. I know of an
under employed college guy with professor like education, who has been
relegated to piano tuning. I would love to chat about it some time. If you
ever have any students who have a broadcast interest, have them send me an
audio file of them doing an audition tape and I'll be glad to listen to it.
If you want to hear any of my work, go to
http://www.acb.org
and find their PSA material. It would be fun to chat about things from our
different prospective. On one hand, you don't want to waste money. On the
other hand. Alexander would have had a hard time getting funding to invent
the telephone. There are so many handicapped people who rise above, I guess
it's all on an individual basis. I'd be hard pressed to recommend radio
unless I really saw some talent. Rehab does not get the credit for all they
do.

You are so correct. I have a friend at our local adult sstation who
 tells
 me
when he has a shift, he goes in to the control room and has two
 buttons.
 One
is the mic, and the other is marked "Next Event!" All of his scripts
 are
 on
the screne as is his log, playlist, show, you name it. Not many
 stations
 use
CD's anymore, and get their music from a music service or download a
 packagge from somewhere.

There are some blind people doing operations work and behind the scene
stuff, but I don't know of many on the air. I would like to hear from
anybody using Audiovolt, and other stuff. I've used Enco on a limmited
bassis, and it does work with Window-eyes right out of the box as do

I will have to give that a try. I really hadn't considered useing them at
slower than normal speeds but i imagine that would allow for great
precision.

You'll find that it's a realy powerful way to get precision, especially
given that you can slow rewind and fast forward to slower than normal
speeds. I do all of my radio shows with GW: I don't use a mixer, the what
you hear option or other software, I mix the whole thing using Gold Wave.
Once you're used to the interface, and after coming from the old
WordPerfect Dos days, this interface was a piece of cake for me
personally, a great deal of precision is possible.

Hey man I dig GW for a lot of reasons, just the editing is different
and not really intuitive, every keystroke has to be learned rather
than incoporated from another program like word or a text editor. If
GW did that rather than what they do, (rather than the $200 for sr or
$225 for SF and NR,) I'd be using it exclusively and totally!

2006-05-30 Thread Curtis Delzer
Hey man I dig GW for a lot of reasons, just the editing is different
and not really intuitive, every keystroke has to be learned rather
than incoporated from another program like word or a text editor. If
GW did that rather than what they do, (rather than the $200 for sr or
$225 for SF and NR,) I'd be using it exclusively and totally!

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-30 Thread Curtis Delzer
Yes, GW does a nice job at noise reduction for 2 reasons: (1) you
have a long enough sample without speech, music or anything which is,
at all, what you wish to keep, and (2) when you don't have a long
sample, let GW use "initial noise" as the preset. It takes, again,
quite a bit longer than the SF plug-in however, but it does work,
only, and that is the important word, if used properly and if necessary.

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-30 Thread Rick Harmon
Hi,

I am not sure but it looked like the longer the file time the greater the
interval got. Looks to do with the funky zoom system that goldwave uses.
I've noticed in editing small files with the minimum zoom level set I could
move the markers more finely than if the file length was much longer. Not
sure if I am saying this clearly enough.
Let me know if what I am saying is incorrect.

Rick

I suspect that the fineness of the editing is not defined by Gold Wave,
which allows for up to five places after the decimal point for seconds,
but rather in the attributes of a sound file. A higher sampling rate, I'm
guessing, will allow for finer editing than a low sampling rate. someone
feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

 HEllo!
I have an ac97 onboard soundcard on my computer.
 Its a packardbell colputer.
I also have windows xp home sp2 installed on it.
In the volume control in windows you should be able to select
 microphone
 as a recording source.
But when i try to check that checkbox it becomes checked an unchecked
 again.
 This happens very vast.
THe strange thing is that it seems that all checkboxes except from the
stereo mix checkbox seem to behave in the same way.
But the stereo mix behaves reverted.
It becomes unchecked and then checked again.
I wonder if anybody here has came across this before?
 Any help is highly appreciated.
 THanks in advance.
 /Anders.

Hi,

Yeah I am sure you are right and I would like to use SF but I just don't
have $225 for it and I could afford the $50 for GW. I guess that all I am
trying to say is don't give gw such a bad rap, its quite good for the money
and I am sure that SF is probably much better in many ways to gw.

Is there any chance you have another program that is hogging your
control+shift+right and control+shift+left keys? Maybe you have Winamp's
global keys enabled and you have set these combinations to be used there,
or some other program such as that?

2006-05-30 Thread Brandon Hicks
hi,
no. DVD discs are read differently than cd's. you couldn't, say, load a dvd
with waves or CDA tracks and pop it into a discman. If you have a laptop
with dvd drive, or portable dvd player, you can, and you can use MP3 files
for longer time, however you must make sure the device you're using has a
DVD, not just a CD drive. it'd be nice, unfortunately it doesn't work. the
longest CD you can have is an mp3 cd, which will hold around 150 songs,
unless you find one of those rare sony stereos or discmen that support the
atrac3 format, where according to sony you can fit 490 songs on one cd and
still have decent quality.

2006-05-30 Thread Bruce Toews
Is there any chance you have another program that is hogging your
control+shift+right and control+shift+left keys? Maybe you have Winamp's
global keys enabled and you have set these combinations to be used there,
or some other program such as that?

2006-05-30 Thread Curtis Delzer
Yeah, the sf sets viturally and in all ways STINK with window-eyes
and sf where the jfw 5 (free) sound forge scripts work quite nicely
with sf5 but... sf8 and jfw don't get along unless you buy scripts
for it, though sf8 can be used if you know the program.
One thing guys, what about sf, gw, and sr, regarding these *.wma
files which have licenses? Can't one just listen and monitor the
input using an editor, recording a *.wav and make your m4A or mp3
from that? 1X, true, though what about winamp and the disk writer
plug-in? rabbit trail I know, but there it is.

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-30 Thread Curtis Delzer
Gold wave takes about 4 times the time to noise reduce than the NR
plug-in for Sound Forge, the interface takes getting use too with
regard to cursoring around in the program, interface is a little like
a cassette machine with rewind and fast forward though in sf8 you can
do that also; the batch converting is a little more friendly in GW
than SF; handling large files is a lot easier with SF than GW going
to a finding a place by cursoring in SF after jumping to a time is a
good bit easier because the jumps can be changed in either forward or
backward direction with the up or down arrow; handling splitting
files between channels in SF is easier because you can tell which
channel is monitored by what you hear, rather than hearing both at
once all the time, (same as SR which does that), reversing takes a
good bit longer in GW than SF if you're converting an NLS cassette
and need to reverse the right channel, etc.' some others but those
are what I can think of right now.

Is there a setting that I should be awhere of that locks the finish marker?

Re: another radio question

2006-05-30 Thread Bob Seed
Believe me when I got into the business I certainly paid my dues. In
commercial radio I hosted the all night show for about six years, and when
I made the switch from commercial radio to public broadcasting it wasn't
much better. It has always been managements thinking, out of sight out of
mind. Even though I had the sonority I was given the undesirable shifts
weekends, evenings, 5 am early mornings. When I complained I was told that I
should be thankful that I had a job. Unfortunately this is the way society
thinks. Even when it came to holiday time the so called able people were
given priority, as they had a life and disabled people did not.

Re: broadcasting question

2006-05-30 Thread Bob Seed
The subscription fee is there to offset the operating costs of the service.
A number of broadcasting companies have bought into both Sirious and XM, so
I don't think that money is a big issue. The problem is that they need more
subscribers in order to keep the service viable. At over a thousand dollars
an hour to keep just one program on the service it will be necessary to
consider running commercials in order to recover some of the operating
costs.
The consumer is holding back as well hoping that the subscription fee will
be lowered or perhaps eliminated completely. If they had their way they
would want to eliminate terrestrial radio completely. That is not going to
happen anytime soon.

The bullet for FM is multi-channel. When Fm can have two to eight
 stations
on one frequency and it is free, XM and friends will not be such a
 great
 idea.

The radios are coming down, you will be able to get one for 75 buks in
 the
 next year.

 /Anders.

Re: broadcasting question

2006-05-30 Thread Brent Harding
Yeah, I notice I heard a lady DJ'ing on the Blend on XM the other day. I
think XM is putting personality back in where it normally hadn't been. I
think they wanted it that way all along but maybe couldn't find people or
had to save money for awhile to gradually add people as they could afford
it. I think they're a little ticked off at Clear Channel for putting
commercials back in the music because now only Sirius can say they are 100
percent commercial free on the music.

I've used Enco on a limmited
bassis, and it does work with Window-eyes right out of the box as do
 many
many things, including Sound Forge although the sets do help.

2006-05-30 Thread HF
Hi Rick
Status bar shows that finish marker is still in same place regardless of how
many times I hit control+shift+left arrow. Moving start marker works as it
should.
Can you have independent zoom levels for finish and start markers?
I ask because I make the assumption that if I can move the start marker by 2
second increments, the finish marker should be moved by the same amount.

Is there a setting that I should be awhere of that locks the finish marker?

Re: broadcasting question

2006-05-30 Thread Chuck Adkins
I don't think people would be able to stand the amount of commercials it
would take to offset the costs. People obviously don't mind spend a small
amount a month to get the products. They have already been trained by
television and some computer sites

In my opinion fm iboc will do well as receiver prices come down and
multi-channel capability comes to pass. I think you hit the nail on
 the
head regarding am iboc. In the future things may get better on the am
 front
when the hybrid am iboc will be replaced by full digital. I think the
 total
digital conversion will take ten or more years.

Converting Wave to Midi

2006-05-30 Thread Samuel Wilkins
Hello, I was wondering how you can convert a wave file of music to a midi file.
I am planning on doing some multitrack recording with Goldwave and Winamp, but
I want to be able to convert it to midi. Is there any program that will allow
me to do this?
