2006-12-09 Thread Doc
I don't know about the third unit you mentioned. The biggest thing I like
about the book port is that it is four devices in one.
* text and document reader
* digital recorder
* mp3 player
* braille note taker

It will also read web pages

I got mine last January and have not been disappointed yet.

Are there any comparison articles regarding the Bookport, BookCourier, and
Milestone mp3 players, since they are the leading accessible mp3 players out
there? What are the advantages or disadvantages that make each one
different, for instance? They all cost about the same price.

Just my opinion here. Don't waste your money on MP3
players/recorders made specifically for the sighted user. Buy
the Book Port from APH. I use this device everyday to listen to
podcasts and other media I download. I transfer the recordings
Replay AV makes for me to the Book Port. You do not have to
worry about what menu your on as the Book Port reads all the
folders and files to you through your headphones. Uses double A
batteries. I hear that there's a chance for a newer Book Port
unit. Is this true? I would love to see the new BP to have a
better recorder and smaller body. Support for WMA and WMA DRM
would be awesome. Petro

are any compatible Napster based portible mobile devices that are at least
half way blind friendly? Thanks.

The best MP3 player

2006-12-09 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi everyone!
A very interesting thread this one but (for my needs at least) the
Bookport doesn't seem to be the best MP3 player but it is by no means
the only accessible mp3 player around. Take for example my Nokia N70
mobile phone using the Talks software, no trouble whatsoever
accessing the MP3 music player on that and no trouble whatsoever
transferring files to the phone from my computers or downloading them
from the net as the phone is both USB and bluetooth compatible, its a
WCDMA phone so you have the added benefit of broad-band internet
speeds for uploading and downloading, I've been using this little
beauty for ten months.
Then of course there is my Iriver 340 which I've had for nearly 2
years now which has served me well with its ability to record, its
ease of upgrading to thigns such as Rockbox and the like etc.
Then I have my CD Players here which will play MP3 files and so it
goes on.
Well I looked at the Bookport and I have to admit it looks very nice
particularly if you're wanting to read allot of books etc but the
only downlside for my needs at least was the fact that I couldn't
find out whether this device could record say from a line-in audio
source, quite frankly for the amount of money I'd be paying for one
of these things I'd expect that to be part and parcel of the machine
but I do understand and respect the fact that everyone's needs are
different to everyone elses so therefor I'm reluctant to knock any
one product in favour of another.

RE: The best MP3 player

2006-12-09 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all

Just my two cents worth on this also ...

I would rather go to the trouble of converting a .txt book into mp3 with a
reasonable sapi 5 voice than suffer listening to the very robotic sounding
speech of the bookport.

Sure technology has improved somewhat since the 1980s since that type of
speech was used?

Hello,

The WS-320M actually records in WMA format, not MP3, but you're right that
64 kbps is the maximum bit rate.

There is information on it at www.blindcooltech.com. You have to look
through the podcasts up there; maybe do a word search for it. The best
price is probably at www.amazon.com. It records in a highly compressed,
lossy MP3 format, something like 64 KBPS, so you will not get high fidelity.
It is okay for speech, but nothing critical.

The BookCourier is, I believe, the same physical size as the BookPort but
the BookPort has an extra row of buttons which enables it to perform
additional tasks, such as its Braille notetaking features. The BookCourier
is no longer under active development, but I have had my unit for over two
years and use it nearly every day.

Find out more by visiting

There is information on it at www.blindcooltech.com. You have to look
through the podcasts up there; maybe do a word search for it. The best
price is probably at www.amazon.com. It records in a highly compressed,
lossy MP3 format, something like 64 KBPS, so you will not get high
fidelity.

Petro

The Bookport doesn't record from line in from what I remember. It does

rockbox. Apparently they're coming out with a new unit, so it might be
part of that one.

Re: Best MP3 Player

2006-12-09 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi,
Too bad I didn't know BookPort was supporting OGG. If I'd have known, I
might have saved my money and coughed up the extra 70 or more dollars to
buy it instead of my X5. Probably not, though. I'm happy with 20GB of
rechargeable hard drive, playing DVD's and AAC files. I've got Kurzweil,
so converting most books to MP3 is a matter of half an hour.
I think, and I'm not starting a war over this, or not intending to, that
Rockbox is the way to go for MP3 players.

Hi again,
Now that I think about it, a daisy player for the smartphones shouldn't
be too far off at all. There are ones for the Pac Mate, which is
basically the pocket PC platform, and if you have a phone that runs on
that it should almost be able to be installed. As for phones like the
n70 and such that run on the simbion, I thought there already was one. I
could be wrong but I remember reading somewhere or hearing on a podcast

Name of Device to record from LP33 to Hard Drive

2006-12-09 Thread Paul Bolduc
Good morning to the list,

I am looking for the name of a device that will play a record, either 33 or
45 rpm and place the digital file in it's memory or to the hard drive. Some
filtering to remove hiss and other noises would be a bonus. Also where the
best place to purchase an item like this.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Have a great day,

Hi Jim

The best I have seen so far is emusic at
www.emusic.com
With 320 kbps.

Oh yes, then there is also
www.allofmp3.com
Abouth which the legality seems to be questionable. You can actually choose
your own encoding and some of the music you can actually download in
lossless formats.

The norm for online service though seems to be wma 128 kbps.

I'll keep an eye on that then. There was something else available,
can't think of the name of it now but it was quite an impressive
little box of tricks, it played and recorded to flash memory and you
could edit your recordings, transferring them to CD using the built-
in CD drive, it spoke as well and you could even create your own
daisy formatted material if you wanted to.

I'll look into that, this could be handy. I know someone is actively
working on an OcR package for smart phones such as the N70, it will
work like the NFB reader, that is you hold the phone over a page of
text and press the camera button butt one thing at a time as I'm
going off-topic.

Now that I think about it, a daisy player for the smartphones shouldn't
be too far off at all. There are ones for the Pac Mate, which is

n70 and such that run on the simbion, I thought there already was one. I
could be wrong but I remember reading somewhere or hearing on a podcast
about a daisy reader for the phone.

RE: Them little round plastic things.

2006-12-09 Thread André van Deventer
There seems to be a few of them around I thing.

Another one I know about is the hifi and hifi pro from
www.xitel.com

Which seems to get very good reviews indeed. However, I don't think it has
any inputs at all but it seems as if the sound quality is really excellent.

RE: The best MP3 player

2006-12-09 Thread Caroline Ford
This could well have been the Plextalk PTR2 player/recorder. I haven't used
one myself, but Brian Hartgen who produces an audio magazine here in the UK,
thinks very highly of it. It costs around 575 pounds, I think, which is
about twice the price of the Iriver H340.

A very interesting thread this one but (for my needs at least) the
Bookport doesn't seem to be the best MP3 player but it is by no means

accessing the MP3 music player on that and no trouble whatsoever
transferring files to the phone from my computers or downloading them
from the net as the phone is both USB and bluetooth compatible, its a
WCDMA phone so you have the added benefit of broad-band internet
speeds for uploading and downloading, I've been using this little
 beauty for ten months.

Windows Media Servers Vs. Shoutcast Servers and comparing bit rates and quality of listening ro

2006-12-09 Thread JardataMailServicesBox
Hello List!

I currently have an internet radio station running a Shoutcast Server at 128K.
I also would like to run a Windows Media Server. I'd like to know something
about the bit rates in Windows Media Servers in comparison to those of
Shoutcast Servers.

First of all, I see that Windows Media Servers cost more per bit rate and
listeners. Why? Is it the cost of maintaining the server or just a company
thing?

Secondly at what bit rate could I get a good CD quality sound on my stream with
Windows Media Servers (the lower the better and the most listeners the better
due to the high cost)?

Thirdly, Do I really need a Windows Media Server? Doesn't the user's default
player come up whenever he/she click on my station (probably Winamp, Real
Player, or Winamp). I thought this was the case, but when I clicked on my
radio station link at my friend's house and he didn't have Real Player
installed and the station did not play; instead, it wanted to download my
stream as if it was a file or program I had ought. Embarrasing!

Finally, should I use Winamp as my default player? Would any station or user
system be able to play a file if I used Winamp. I actually play the streem
through Winamp, with Real Player playing all MP3 and PLS files.

I'd like to get this station on the road so I'd appreciate any info on this
situation.

from
http://www.ccrane.com/radios/am-fm-radios/teac-gf-350-am-fm-radio-turntable-cd-recorder.aspx

The new TEAC GF-350 AM/FM Radio Turntable has a vinyl record player
and built-in CD Recorder/CD Player. This means you can record your
records permanently
to a CD! It plays 33-1/3, 45, and 78 rpm records with a ceramic
cartridge. Recording the LPs to CD is the easiest of any system we
have seen. Uses lank
CD-R or CD-RW discs available anywhere, but we recommend the
Maxell CD-R Music
to guarantee the highest quality recordings. Can also record any
audio to CD that you feed into the Auxiliary Line In. The small,
black console has fine
acoustics and a decent modern analog AM/FM radio with tuning light.
Handy remote control included.
Size: 18.5 W x 9 H x 14 D. $399.95

Re: Two Questions about Napster

2006-12-09 Thread Chris Gilland
Right, I knew that about the jaws cursor, which is what I've been doing.
Just didn't know if maybe they had a script that would jump me from the edit
combo box to type in my search, then if i tab over to the combo box for
artist, album, track, etc. set that then shift tab back, and hit enter to
start searching, now to get back up to the little browser window where I can
use my virtual cursor... I didn't know if maybe there was a script that
would jump me back there. I don't mind using the jaws cursor at all, but
it's just a little tedious. For what you can get though, it's worth it.

I thnk in the past week, I've literally gotten over 400 CD's. Granted, I
did it with the unlimited part of the subscription a corse, so, you're
talking no burning, and no taking it on the go with me, but that's fine as I
usually don't burn CD's anyway. I usually just listen on my pc anyway.

Re: Olympus WS-320M digital voice recorder,

2006-12-09 Thread David Tanner
Well, I'll say this much; it may only record at 64 bps, but it does a very nice
job, and certainly doesn't cost nearly as much as a number of the other
recorders out there. And, I am guessing that it would meet the recording
requirements for the majority of blind folks even for recording music concerts.

Re: Olympus WS-320M digital voice recorder,

2006-12-09 Thread Rick Harmon
Hi,

I would have to agree on everything except the music recording. I own a
WS320 and use it for everyday recording as well as most of my tutorials and
podcasts that I do for my website. It's a great little recorder and a very
good MP3 player as well. It's getting cheaper as well. Under $140 at
Amazon now.

Jaws works well with Napster with no extra scripts needed. You will need
 to
use your jaws cursor in many cases.

Re: Olympus WS-320M digital voice recorder,

2006-12-09 Thread Sarah
O no! I demand high quality from my recordings, but I still cary my olympus
in case one of my recorders dies like it did this weekend.

Well, I'll say this much; it may only record at 64 bps, but it does a
very nice job, and certainly doesn't cost nearly as much as a number
of the other recorders out there. And, I am guessing that it would
meet the recording requirements for the majority of blind folks even
 for recording music concerts.

Hi all, I normally use DVD Audio extractor, but I am interested in ripping
some DVD material with pictures so my kids can enjoy it too. What are
people's latest recommendations on the most accessible way to rip DVDs
 with
 video in tact?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: The best MP3 player

2006-12-09 Thread Don Ball
best thing about the book port or book courier is the ease of scanning
through a file to locate your place. the worst thing is the transfer speed.
Damn slow.

Subject: The best MP3 player

Re: Accessible DVD Ripper

2006-12-09 Thread Chris Gilland
Explain to me then, how to click on the browse button to select where your
output files go. I've tried and tried and tried and tried and tried, and
cannot find a real easy way that is consistent a hundred percent of the
time.

Chris.
