Re: speed of dvd audio extracter

2007-01-15 Thread Don Ball
I need some people to email me there speed results. I will try setting the
thread priority higher and see if I get faster rips. I don't want to wait
two hours for a dvd to be ripped when I can copy one in 30 minutes.

Typically, on an English DVD, the English will be the first of the
language options. On a well-done DVD the appropriate language is also
spelled out in the combo box. Whatever it is, it's the same order as the
audio options when you step through them using a DVD player. For example,
when you play the Corner Gas DVD's on a standard DVD player, 5.1 surround
is the default. You push the audio button, and you get stereo, and you
push the audio button again and you get described video. So, in DVD Audio
Extractor, the first option in the combo box, the one that is selected by
default, is 5.1 surround, the next item in the combo box is stereo, and
the third is described video. HTH.

Re: Clarifying M issue with the 58, was Re: mic

2007-01-15 Thread Nick G
In turms of internet broadcasting, if you have a two sound card setup with a
mixer, and even if you don't have a board there are some really inexpensive
but decent ones out there, I will recommend the Cad GXL2200/2400-series for
internet broadcasting to the ends of the earth. At $69-$79, you cannot go
wrong. If not, there are some like it that i haven't heard, but no the
technology very well that cost about as much that use your USB port, like
the Samson C01U. These would be good if someone wanted to use a line
recorder type situation. I'd honestly try those first, and then try an
Audio Technica ATR30 mic which I think sounds jsut as good as a 58, and then
go 58.

Winamp Issue Resolved...Sort Of

2007-01-15 Thread Wes Derby
Earlier today, I wrote about a weird error message I'd been getting with Winamp
lately. I've also noticed that sometimes as of late, I have trouble burning
with CDRWIN if Norton Internet Security is running. I'd shut down NIS before
burning with Winamp, but still got the error. However, After I shut it down,
shut down GoBack, and "Dell Support Agent", I was able to burn without
problems. Just figured I'd share in case anyone else has the same
problems...Guess it's time to buy more RAM.

Rockbox Questions

2007-01-15 Thread Wes Derby
Hey, All.

Okay, I have some questions about Rockbox that I didn't see answered/asked in
my search of the archives.

With tax time coming up, since my birthday falls shortly after we get our
refund, I'm thinking of trying to convince my wife to get me an iPod.

First, I see from looking at Rockbox's site that it does work with the 60-gig
iPod, but not the 80GB yet. Anyone know if the developers plan to make Rockbox
useable with the 80-gig? Yes, I know 60 should be enough, but I have a HUGE
music collection. :-)

Second, I know there are other MP3 players out there, but is there one with
which Rockbox will work that has the storage capacity of the 60GB iPod? Any
plans to make it work with Zune?

Finally, since they can apparently be played on the iPod, will Rockbox work
with content purchased from Audible.com?

Okay, one more question, actually...Who IS the developer of Rockbox? Is it a
blind/VI person? I ask because I'd assume it is because let's face it, many
sighted people don't think to include speech capabilities in their
software...But at the same time, in looking at rockbox.org, it looks like it
offers some great things for the sighted users as well...Just curious.

Thanks for your help.

2007-01-15 Thread Chris Skarstad
My point exactly, Bob. Cory is probably interested in internet
broadcasting, if I'm wrong correct me on that one, and even a 50
dollar headset mic will serve your needs just fine for that, if used
properly and if your setup allows for such a thing. Everyone's setup
is different and yes, different mics are used for different applications.
So it may be the right mic for you, but maybe not.

Typically, on an English DVD, the English will be the first of the

the third is described video. HTH.

2007-01-15 Thread Sarah
That's true. You can also use an akgd440 but that ic is really expencive and
fradgle. ther are also ribbon mics and other types. you need to ask yourself
what kind of sound you want. I like my 58 but there are time when I will
switch to a different mic.

Re: Clarifying M issue with the 58, was Re: mic

2007-01-15 Thread Bob Seed
The question that should be answered is what kind of application wil you b
using this microphone for? Microphones are wide and varied , and depending
on the application can be expensive or in expensive. There are microphones
that are specifically designed for live performances, and there are those
types of microphones that are designed specifically for studios. Now that we
have computers in most broadcast facilities todays microphones have to be
shielded and properly grounded in order to avoid that anoying 60 herts hum.

soundforge time elapsed

2007-01-15 Thread Damon
Hi. Soundforge has a marvellous clock which displays time elapsed. It's at
the bottom right of the screen I was playing around with a few JAWS cursor
thingies when I think I clicked on it, I tink it was on the word sample in a
pull down menu, and the clock has now changed itself to something other than
a clock and is most unhelpful.

How do I get it back to being a clock? I've no idea how long my tracks are
or what point in a file I'm in because of my actions.

am using Soundforge 4.5 with jaws.

Any help appreciated.

Re: I Found One!

2007-01-15 Thread Bob Seed
There was some discussion awhile back about microphones.
Prices of microphones have come down cnsiderably over the years. You don't
have to pay a thousand dollars in order to get broadcast quality out of a
microphone. Many broadcasters will buy microphones in the 300 to 500-dollar
range. If it is simply internet radio a microphone in the range of 60 to
100-dollars will do just fine. Many of todays professional headset
microphone combinations will do the job just fine. The other day I saw a
discontinued AKG broadcast quality microphone headset combination for under
a hundred bucks.

It is possible to have a XLR plug at one end of the chord and a mini or RCA
plug at the other end. More often than not one might have to adapt the chord

When I try extracting I get a speed of about 2 x this seems slow to me. Do I
need a new dvd burner or what. what is the fastest speeds that some of you
have had from the product. I want a new drive if that is the problem. I
have a lite on duel layer of about two years old.

Re: mic

2007-01-15 Thread Bruce Toews
An XLR jack is a largish jack. If you look at a high-quality mike you'll
see that it's attached to its cord by this XLR plug. Standard sound cards
will not have an XLR jack on them, typically (and this is what I do) you
ahve a cord with an XLR female plug at one end that plugs into the mike,
and a more conventional male plug on the other end for plugging into your
nonprofessional audio equipment.

 Hi all,
There is now, and apparently has been for a while, an AC3
encoder/decoder out there. Actually, there are a few flavors of the same
basic design, involving different user interfaces.
The site at which the guide for using one of the flavors is at:
 http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=86897
There you can download the command line version, and there is a link to
the latest version of the recommended GUI. There are other downloads on
the page of the command line version of this program. You may have to be
cautious if you get the latest version of BeLight because there are
compiles for different architectures, and I'm not exactly sure which
ones work with which processors. I have the normal version on a Sempron
3000 and I'm getting a few errors, so I'll have to test others and let
you people know what I come up with.

 Brandon

Hi,

Yeah, please send me a brief sample off list. Maybe an mp3 attachment unless
you have a web site...

Judy, if you have a mixer and can spare $69-$79, You can't go wrong with a
Cad GXL2200/2400. The only real difference between the two is that the 2400
has greater SPL, though I believe in a broadcast setting you can't tell, and
that the 2400 is smaller. otherwise, these microphones are flawless, and
I'll be honest, i wouldn't rather talk on anything else on my shows, and
this comes from someone who's used Rode NT1's, Shure SM58's and similar,
etc. If you'd like a sample of the Cad GXL2400, which i have, contact me.

RE: Clarifying M issue with the 58, was Re: mic

2007-01-15 Thread Chris Skarstad
See, that's my point exactly.
Nick was saying that the shure mics were overrated, but he never
explained why in his original post. In my view, you can't just say
something sucks or is over-rated without at least having a reason for
it. I could come on here and say that something sucks and have no
reason for it, and that just confuses new people who have been told
that that particular audio product, or whatever it is, was fine. and
it's true, you do need to evaluate it for your particular needs,
setup an particular budget. Not everyone has $1000 to spend on a
studio quality perfect mic, but I do think it's important to get the
best product in your particular price range. and if you just can't
afford a good one at this time, save some ccash away and when you
have enough you can make that purchase in the knowledge that you're
buying something that you know is right for you.

RE: Clarifying M issue with the 58, was Re: mic

2007-01-15 Thread Judy W

He's not an audio snob. I think he's right. You have to ask what is the mic
going to be used for. All of the radio stations I have been in use very
expensive condenser mics. You can get a cheaper akg mic if it's for
broadcasting. You will get a wormer more professional sound. This info comes
from the engineer at our local public radio station. Unfortunately, I can't
afford one for my show at this time.

On the other hand, I know several folk musicians who will use nothing but
the sure mic. You can't just say that a mic is good or bad. You need to
evaluate what you want to use it for and then you need to look at your
budget...

Just my opinion,

Judy

Re: speed of dvd audio extracter

2007-01-15 Thread Keith Gillard
Hi,

Extracting DVD audio is going to be slow. Don't quote me on this but I
think the program actually extracts the audio in real time. Thus if your
DVD audio track is two hours it will take two hours to extract it.

Last I checked and that was around a year ago top end DVD duel layer were
running around 16x. I'm sure others will let you know of the latest and
greatest.

I suspect yours is around 8x given that it is two years old.

need a new dvd burner or what. what is the fastest speeds that some of you
have had from the product. I want a new drive if that is the problem. I
have a lite on duel layer of about two years old.

I Found One!

2007-01-15 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi all,
There is now, and apparently has been for a while, an AC3
encoder/decoder out there.
3000 and I'm getting a few errors, so I'll have to test others and let
you people know what I come up with.

dvd audio extractor

2007-01-15 Thread Wollner
hI okay I have been ripping some DVD's with DVD audio extractor. Now is it
better to rip to uncompressed wave p c m or if I did entire DVD like that
would it take up a lot of room on my hard drive? Or should I use mp3
instead? Also how to I make it so what I ripped I can skip from track to
track or chapter to chapter like you can on a cd or a DVD it you were
watching it on your DVD player or playing a cd in your cd player? Also if I
am ripping a DVD how do you make it so that the titles of what DVD you
ripped show up so you know what you are going to listen to and all of that
sort of thing. Thanks for all the help so far and I will look forward to
anymore help that may come across the list for me on this. I am looking to
get the best quality that I can get off of what I am ripping.

Winamp CD Burning Issue

2007-01-15 Thread Wes Derby
Okay, I've had an error that's been popping up lately, just all of a sudden the
last few days, and I'm hoping someone here can help. I'm running WinAmp 5.32.
The error is pasted below:
Nullsoft Burner Error
Error during Audio CD burning process.
Library error: The SCSI command sent by the function returned a check condition.
Drive error:Power Calibration Area Is Full

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Winamp Pro, and it hasn't made a
difference.

I looked for info in the "Troubleshooting" section of Winamp to no avail...I
also tried joining the Winamp Forum, but they have one of those visual
verification things, and unlike many sites, don't appear to have a link for
blind and visually impaired users who can't see the image to be able to get
help...So, so much for that.

Any help on how to correct/get around this problem, or what it actually means,
would be appreciated. Thanks.

the best way to extract dvd audio with dvd audio extractor

2007-01-15 Thread Wollner
Hi okay I have a stereo DVD with comedians on it. What I would like to do
is using DVD audio extractor is take the audio off of the DVD and then be
able to burn it to a cd so I can play it in my regular cd player. But if I
want to play it on my computer I would like it to go straight threw playing
and let me use the b key in winamp to skip ahead a chapter or back a chapter
if I would like to. So cna you rip audio with DVD audio extractor this way?
And then be able to have it go straight threw on the burned cd also but
still be able to skip from track to track like you can on a prerecorded
comedy cd. And also what are the best settings to use when extracting audio
off of DVD's with this program. I mean do you want to change it to 44,100
or just leave it as the default settings except for changing it to stereo or
mono if needed? All assistance is welcome and thanks for any that will
happen to come across the list for me.

Re: Win Mx question

2007-01-15 Thread simon.dowling
hi frank, taken from the tutorial I wrote see below:
click on the
share files button, then share folder button.
a list of all folders and drives will come up on your pc, what you are
willing to share.
then you can search your pc for the folders you want to share with other
people.
it will say, hold down shift when clicking ok to exclude sub folders.
just share my music folder, and press the ok button.
winMX will take a while to rebuild the library again, especially if you have
a large collection of files in there.
now people will be able to upload from you.
I will send you the tutorial off list.

Skype 3.0

2007-01-15 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all

I upgraded to Skype version 3.0 with rather disastrous consequences -
especially for the chat window. I have no idea whether my chats are comming
out right.

Is there some way to fix this or must I revert to an earlier version. The
one just before that works fine.

Is there some place where it would be possible to get the earlier version?

if you click on the 5 meg file it will come down well before the bigger file
anyways, theres no need to stop the other file.
if you are sharing files, this helps as people don't like leechers, and

Hey Doc and List! Well, I just checked out aolradio.com, the page came up
fine. But I got this amusing bit on the site which reads like this:

News / Sports / Talk
New On AOL Radio
Tune in for the biggest hits that defined 2006, including music from
,
,
 and
.

Huh? And the JAWS cusor doesn't help a bit. Very funny!

Peace to everyone,

For any of youwho may remember Spinner, and there were many pluses and
minuses about it--the pluses being the amazing variety of choice, and
 the
minuses being poor audio quality and lots of drop out time, I have good
 news. Go to
 aolradio.com
and you'll find all the spinner channels arranged by category, just as
 in
the old site. It's quite accessable, and the good news is the audio
quality is now superb and in stereo. You'll find everything from
 baroque
to world music, and everything in between, including celtic, classic
country, doo wop, rockabilly, klezmer, alternative, music of India,
 Cuba,
British invasion, jazz of all types, rhythm and blues, female focus,
 gay
pride, one hit wonders and much too much to list here. It's free, but
 I'd
gladly pay for it. I'm a paid subscriber to both xm andSirius and this
 is
 better than both combined.
The world music channel and music of India are particularly good.
