Re: Output format tips needed:

2007-09-03 Thread Dane Trethowan
You've certainly got enough hard drive space to start with, now I'm
doing some very rough calculations here, on average I might get 10
CD'S on a DVD disc using some sort of Lossless format, say FLAC for
example, I also said earlier that I use the FLAC and Cue sheet
method, that way I can write the audio back to an Exact copy of the
original CD using various pieces of software, its just occured to me
that you can get a free plugin for Nero to allow it to work with cue/
flac/wave files too.
Now going on my very basic calculation of 10 CD'S per DVD, you will
be able to easily apply 100 CD'S to 40 gig and have quite a bit of
room to spare so you'd get a couple of hundred CD'S at least on a 250
gig drive.

 Hi.

If you're looking to retain exact audio copies of your CD's before
selling them then you'll need to use a lossless format. I'd
recommend lossless WMA and using windows media player to rip your
 CD's rather than nero.

As you're probably aware, next to MP3, WMA is the most commonly
supported format. It's also a proprietary microsoft format and I
don't see microsoft going away any day soon so the longevity of the
format should be guaranteed over any other.

Lossless formats take up around 50 to 75% of the original CDDA
equivalent so you'll need a lot of disc space to hold 650 CD's.
I've currently got around 700 CD's ripped in lossless format and
they're taking up just over 270GB of disc space. You'll also need
to back up your hard drive because if you have a hard drive failure,
you're going to want to get your music back from your saves. I
currently use 3 hard drives, a master and 2 back up drives.

WAV files will take up more space than lossless WMA or FLAC files
and they don't support ID3 tags so I would disuade

As I described some time ago on this list, the audio you get out of speakers
in small devices these days is utterly amazing or it can be, I talked about
my LG tu-500 mobile phone which I play books on as well as making phone
calls, that thing blows many bigger audio products right out of the water
and the volume and lack of distortion is amazing, I think that LG are using
digital amps in their phones now like so many other company's, the great
thing about DA'S is that you can get more power out of them with less
current when compared to conventional analog amplification.

I would also like the new bookport to have variable speed and pitch control

Re: Output format tips needed:

2007-09-03 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Vickey,
You can in deed do that, but what if you want to move away from your
computer?
Most every day joe DVD players won't play audio files that were burned on to
a DVD.
They are very costly, but there are DVD players that were designed to play
DVD audio discs.
I can remember 7 years ago, there was a format wore going on.
It was a toss up between DVDA and SACD.
I don't remember whitch one of those formats won that wore.
But I do know about a player that can play both DVDA and SACD as well as
video DVDs.

Hi, If you have a drive that can burn and read both CD and DVD, why would
 it
not be a good idea to store CD music on DVD? Wouldn't you get a lot more
 music on each disk?

I'm interested, since I might like to do the same.

 Thanks for your info! Vicky

It would be a help if there was a site where we could check the latest

the comments I have heard about the Victor Stream say it has a very poor
 under powered speaker.

I would also like the new bookport to have variable speed and pitch control

Express Burn

2007-09-03 Thread Rich De Steno
The free Express Burn program CD burner gives me strange numbers for total
time used and free time when I load files to burn a CD. For example, it
keeps saying 1:19 free time for every CD, and today it said over an hour was
used up for some WAV files I set up, when I know it was not close to that.
Is this a known bug in this program? I like to use it because it is very
speech friendly with great hot keys, but this is a major problem.

What I would like to know is. When using Nero to make a copy of a cd that
you own or have borrowed or whatever when you are selecting your speed for
it to burn at witch is the best speed to use? What I mean is when you are
setting Nero up to copy the disc and it is an audio cd. When you get to the
place where you can select the speed for your drive to burn at like 48 x 32
24 16 witch one is best to select or doesn't it matter? Also is there a
loss in the sound of the audio on the copy of the disk that you just made or
does using one speed over another give you better sound quality for your
copied cd? Just wanting to know cause I am burning a lot of disks today and
would like to get it done with the best quality that I can. So I will look
forward to reading any replies that come across the list on this. Thanks to

I think this depends on the quality of your drive and the amount of
processor speed and memory you have. I run mine flat out without incident,
however, my last machine wouldn't burn right at speeds over 32X.

Hi, Jim. You may be right, but it seems that allmusicconverter converts
 rax
files into mp3, which sound taxi doesn't seem to. My gripe with all music
converter is that sometimes the mp3's that it produces can have weird
 little
skips or odd repititions in the tracks. I've written to the programmers
about that, so I hope they can fix that. Or is it me? Smile.

 Pece,
 Kathy

High Casey,
I found in my experience, it doesn't matter what program you're using to
burn an audio CD.
The best results you will get, is when your drive is writing the files to CD
at its slowest speed.
Because if they're written to fast, most audio CD players will have a
tracking problem with those CDS.

What I would like to know is. When using Nero to make a copy of a cd that
you own or have borrowed or whatever when you are selecting your speed for
it to burn at witch is the best speed to use? What I mean is when you are
setting Nero up to copy the disc and it is an audio cd. When you get to
 the
place where you can select the speed for your drive to burn at like 48 x
 32
24 16 witch one is best to select or doesn't it matter? Also is there a
loss in the sound of the audio on the copy of the disk that you just made
 or
does using one speed over another give you better sound quality for your
copied cd? Just wanting to know cause I am burning a lot of disks today
 and
would like to get it done with the best quality that I can. So I will

Drew`s Back With DAK.com

2007-09-03 Thread dball10

Dear pc-audio Discussion list,

Donald Ball at ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) would like you to check out Drew Kaplan’s
new DAK.com electronic technology site.

http://www.dak.com/reviews/3010story.cfm?PA_System

Donald Ball wants you to get the following personal message:

“This is the portable dak pa that I was telling you about. it really works good
for meetings and voice aplications.”

Hi pc-audio Discussion list,

My name is Drew (Kaplan). Your friend above forwarded you
this email because they thought that you might be a lot like us - you
like to push the limits of what technology can do to improve our lives.

I used to run the DAK 1 print catalog and now I’m launching
DAK.com. As I used to say in the catalog, I think I’ve got
the neatest job in the whole world.

I get to play with the newest electronic innovations,
usually even before they leave the lab or the factory.
My site will take you on a trip through the never never land
of new electronic technology.

DAK 1 was 4,300,000 strong so we DAKonians could
pretty much dictate both the features and prices we wanted from
the manufacturers.

When I start mailing our list again, we'll have power
to spare. But I've already found over 50 great new products.
So, we’re trying to round up about 100,000 eDAKonians to
get the buying clout we need TODAY.

Check out http://www.dak.com and let’s explore
the newest electronic technology together.

Sincerely,

DAK Industries, INC.

Drew (Kaplan)
President

Important privacy protection for you.

 1. We are only forwarding this email to you in response to the request
of your friend (name and email address listed above).

 2. We will not contact you or use your email address again unless
you come to http://www.dak.com and sign-up yourself.

 3. Most Important. You are protected. DAK.com is
anti-spam. To protect you, we will keep your eMail address
in our database so that you will not hear from any of your
other friends OR FROM US recommending our site address

Also since like you we only have one email inbox
this will help prevent someone from spamming you

Re: when burning a cd with nero what is the best bit rate to use

2007-09-03 Thread Curtis Delzer

Speed makes no difference in quality in any way. Speed has to do with the
quality of the media you're using to burn on, higher quality can handle
faster speeds, that's all. It is likely that if you burn at faster than 32X
or so, errors are more likely and you'll waste a lot more media than at 16X
which I generally use which is slow but always works. Right now I don't have
a lot of good media so don't dare try burning on it faster than 16X or I
have coasters all over the place.
The copy you're making is digital so there is no loss whatsoever.

I bought a portable pa system from dak and it is a pretty good one. You can
buy it with a rechargable battery option for about $135 shipped. It has a
wireless microphone with it and you can buy an optional lapel or headset
mic. It works good in a room that would hold about a hundred people. it
 has
echo and eq adjustments, as well as places for a corded mic, a line in
 and
a line out. all jacks are quarter inch.
It is a twenty wat pa. you can get it from dak.com or call toll free

Is that true? Is CBR the best?
Is it good to enable jitter correction?

Re: Some CDEX questions

2007-09-03 Thread Kelly Pierce
if you really want the highest quality rips possible, use Exact Audio copy
with the Lame extreme preset. With the current version of Lame, variable
bit rates with joint stereo deliver the extra fullness and richness when it
is needed. EAC does offer a preset for 320 CBR, but the developer calls
this setting insane.

EAC, unlike CDEX, scans each track, looking for two exactly identical wave
forms or the closest exact match possible. It repeatedly scans a tract,
dozens of times if needed, before ripping it. CDEX does not perform this
error checking analysis.

If you want the best rips in town, use EAC. It takes longer to learn, but
the rips sound really great. CDEX is easy to use and I still rip audio

Subject: Some CDEX questions

 Hi,
I got cdex installed, but I have some questions about the configuration
options. What is the best quality setting for MP3s? I want my bitrates
to be 320 at a constant bitrate as I heard that constant bitrates are the
best. Is that true? Is CBR the best?
Is it good to enable jitter correction?
Also, What is the best ripping method to use. I want to create the best
mp3s with the highest quality possible with no artifacts. I am a D.J.
and will be using my mp3s for gigs. Thanks to all in advance!

if you really want the highest quality rips possible, use Exact Audio copy
with the Lame extreme preset. With the current version of Lame, variable
bit rates with joint stereo deliver the extra fullness and richness when it
is needed. EAC does offer a preset for 320 CBR, but the developer calls
  this setting insane.

EAC, unlike CDEX, scans each track, looking for two exactly identical wave
forms or the closest exact match possible. It repeatedly scans a tract,
dozens of times if needed, before ripping it. CDEX does not perform this
  error checking analysis.

If you want the best rips in town, use EAC. It takes longer to learn, but
the rips sound really great. CDEX is easy to use and I still rip audio
books with it. For industrial strength music output, I use EAC.

Before replying to your question re output tips I should think that list
members need to know if you have copywrite permission to sell the tracks you
plan to rip.

I have 650 audio disks I plan to rip to my external drive. Since I'm going
to sell the disks want the sound to be of really good quality but I can't
afford to make duplicates in CDA format. I'd also like to be in a position
to change the format if a new one comes along that's enough better to
justify it. I plan to use, Nero 7 Ultra Edition and rip to flak but I'm
open to all suggestions. also, I've used Roxio products for years but I
switched because the latest version of their program was less accessible
than Nero. therefore, if anyone has a tutorial or general configuration
tips, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance.

So I will
 look
forward to reading any replies that come across the list on this. Thanks
 to
everyone in advance for any assistastance that I might get on this.

 Casey

Not necessarily. CDEX doesn't have error correction and wave form
comparison, rescanning the same track two dozen times. EAC can often
salvage a scratched disc. there is much discussion on the Internet
comparing the two programs, check it out.
