Re: Amazon MP3 download service now available

2007-09-29 Thread Chris Chaffin

According to Amazon.com, some of their MP3 files are an average of 256 bit
rate.
The word average means that some of the files have a variable rate, and
the average of that variable rate comes to 256. This would also mean that
some of the file might be less than 256 and some of the file might be more
to come to an average of 256. They do this to help cut down on file size.
When it says that some of the file might be less than 256, they really do
not say how far below 256 they go with the bit rate. So your guess is as
good as mine, but I would assume that they would definitely stay above 128.
Now they also said that they do have some files that are totally 256 bit
rate, but not all of them.
I do not know if they are going to tell this information for each file or
not, you will have to check out their web site.

Hope this helps,
Chris

Hi. I have successfully used this service with Jaws and IE7 and
 absolutely
love it! Did you install the required Amazon Downloader? In order to
download albums, you need this helper application, which by the way is
accessible. If you download individual songs, you don't need the
downloader, but you do if you want to download albums. Also, could it be
that your firewall or browser security settings are keeping it from
downloading? Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to
 help.
I plan to write up a mini tutorial on this service this evening. I think
 it
is absolutely wonderful, as there is no DRM, and you can play the tracks
 on
any player you want and burn them to a CD too.

For those who are interested: GW - v5.20 Precise audible navigation.

2007-09-29 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hello Folks:

I am posting this conversation that I had with Chris Craig, (the creator of
GoldWave), concerning what I felt was a major draback for choosing GoldWave
as a preferred audio editor. Though I do have SF 8.0D, I feel that GoldWave
does have great potential. Anyway, for those who use GoldWave, or for those
who are thinking about using this editor, this should come as welcomed news.

Jim Noseworthy: Has there been any headway on providing precise navigation
using
audio feedback: that is to say, the ability to accurately navigate a
sound file via the arrow keys and the pgdn and pgup keys?

Chris Craig: The next update will have an enhanced Scroll Lock mode. If
the Scroll Lock key on the keyboard is on, then the view and arrow keys will
be locked to the playback position. You'll be able to use the left, right,
page up, and page down keys to skip back and forward through the file during
playback. Using the Shift+Up and Shift+Down keys change the amount of audio
in the view, which controls how much audio is skipped with the other keys.
If
you use the View | 10 Seconds command, for example, the page keys will
skip 10 seconds and the arrow keys will skip 1/2 of a second.

Jim Noseworthy: When will we get a chance to test this animal?

Chris Craig: The update should be ready in about a week or so.

 Chris

Hi Steve,

I never did speak with paul as I got company and the time flew by.
I did figure out how to adde new music, though. In your explanation below,
you say to add a new category? What if the music is all, say, country or
rock. You, assumably, have the rest of that type music in the appropriate
categories, so I didn't understand your advice re: creating a new one.
I ran the windows automatic graphics labeling program and, only one
new thing emerged. When on tracks, a right arrow renders new folder 1.
When you right click, or applications key or shift f10, a context menus
comes up. One of the choices is add. When it is activated, you then get a
choice of adding a file or a directory. Just press enter on your choice and
an explorer tree view comes up to find the new material. Press enter on it
and it gets imported.

When I went into program files, spacial audio, and then sam, I
found a m3u playlist called first time. Its what plays the files and
announcements when you first run the program. So, I'll be a real happy
camper when I can figure out how to load and play a predesigned playlist,
like, say smooth jazz for dinner music, etc.
I assume that if your music is properly tagged, when it gets loaded
into the database it goes into the appropriate category. Problem is, not
all music is properly tagged! Well, I'll try to further explore the
category scheme and its usefulness. Mostly, though, I set up preset picked
playlists to match the occasion and encourage requests.

Thanks,
Rusty

Paul is excellent, and, to be honest, Spacial's only blind customer
support person, and the blind part is associated with customer and
support agent both!

I thought I wrote and explained how to add music tracks to the
database. If not, here it is again, but a little abbreviated in case
it's a rerun.

1. Create a new category by right-clicking on any top-level category
and choosing New category from the menu.

2. Select that category (highlight it by moving through the list of
categories until the one you want speaks its name).

3. Add folders where your music is stored by pressing CTRL/D.

That's really all there is to it.

For other category options, place the mouse cursor on the category name
and right-click it, then select from the resultant menu.

Hi. I have successfully used this service with Jaws and IE7 and
absolutely love it! Did you install the required Amazon Downloader?
In order to download albums, you need this helper application, which
by the way is accessible. If you download individual songs, you don't
need the downloader, but you do if you want to download albums. Also,
could it be that your firewall or browser security settings are
keeping it from downloading? Please let me know if there is anything

Not sure on this one, what does your sound card say on it, it's
manufacture and model number? If windows doesn't recognize it it won't

Hi. I was thinking of subscribing to emusic, especially for the books.
However, they want you to use their new download program to get the books.
Here's the problem I saw.
I tried to download the program, but my virus program would not allow it.
Seems the program contains spyware.
Or some kind of malware that nod32 didn't like.
Do you really want to knowingly put spyware on your machine?

Emusic.com has just started offering audio books in the .mp3 format.
They pretty much duplicate some of the Audible.com offerings, but they are
not tied to any proprietary scheme. They run around $10 per book with a few
being $20. You purchase a monthly subscription.

In this case, you should be able to use any burning program that works with
your screen reader.

Joe,
What you need to do is to switch the headphones on. Somewhere in the
creative menu there is a settings option. When you go into this, there is a
headphones tab. You first have to check the headphones checkbox, then you
need to decide whether when using headphones, the sound comes out of the
speakers as well. Quirky I know, but that's creative for you.
My memory is not that good, but if you get stuck, I still have a machine
with this module set up, and I guess I'll fire it up, and be able to tell
you exactly which option to choose.

Best,

Dave.

Re: Yahoo and LaunchCast Plus

2007-09-29 Thread Christopher Bartlett
I played around with Bluebeat for a while a year or so ago. My
biggest problem with them was the odd holes they had in their
selection. But yes, it was customizable.

 Christopher Bartlett
At 06:58 PM 9/27/2007, you wrote:
hello

If you want to customize your station, go to:

http://www.bluebeat.com

Its free, its great, and I love it. Don't get me wrong, launchcast is great
too, but you can't beat 320 kbps. If you don't want to customize your
station, simply go to killer playlists or time machine, and choose from
about 100 genres, ranging from country to just plain wierd, in all aeras of
time from the 1920s onwards, if you so desire. Just download the plug in for
windows media player, set up an acount and your all ready to go. I live in
canada, therefore, can't make my own station due to copyright, however, this
sure as heck doesn't make it a less enjoyable experience, as there are about
a million stations to choose from, not to mention you can browse by artists,
album etc, genre, too. Adding songs to your crate or station as you so
choose. I absolutely love it- and hope you do, too!

Blue beat loves hearing from us blind users- I e-mailed them about an
accessibility on there website, and got a prompt response, asking me what
they could do to fix the problem.

I can't say enough about how unknown this website is, how nobody knows about
it. Its one of the best, and it makes launchcast look bad in comparison.
But, I'm on dialup, so its sort of dificult for me to get in there, the
minimum bitrate is 160, so I recommend having a dsl or higher connection
speed, I'm getting high speed tomorrow, so if you need more help, I'll be
happy to add more detailed instructions about things.

hope that helps,

  Hello to the list.
I have joined the Yahoo! LaunchCast Plus service and it seems like there's
  a

great variety of high quality stations and formats from which to choose.
When you call up the entire list of stations, even though they're not
identified as links using Jaws, you can still press Enter on any given
station to launch it, and it plays just fine.
You can even save the station to your Favorites list and launch it that
  way
  very quickly.

Apparently, it is possible to customize your personal station to include
artists and genres from specific formats. I'm wondering if anyone has
figured out how to do this?
I have been going round and round in circles on these pages but have not
  figured this out just yet.
If anyone has successfully done this, perhaps you could let me know how
  you
  accomplished it.
  Thanks a lot.

A couple of months ago, there was a great thread on this list about FM

  http://www.wavemach.com.

I purchased one of these and am thrilled. The range is huge, the
construction solid, no nasty power hum, very good stereo separation, in
short, no complaints whatsoever. I got him to add a level control that
allows me to set the line in for the two RCA sockets, and he also added
small buttons for setting the frequency. It has a standard antenna socket
  at
the back and comes with a very solid little antenna, not just a wire.

So if you're looking for an FM transmitter, this one is definitely worth
  a
look, but it is on the high end of the price range. You definitely get
  what
  you pay for though.

Re: Audiotapes onto CDs

2007-09-29 Thread Larry N
I would have to respectfully disagree with the oppinion that one can't edit
with DC6. . I use DC6 for editing on a daily
basis. Perhaps it could be said that certain aspects of DC6 are
innaccessible or less accessible than other editors, but I honestly have not
run into anything except for a bit of a learning curve for certain editing
issues. The
menus are quite accessible, and all filters can be tried without fear,
because all of them have a clearly spoken preview mode that lets you listen
to the change in question while changing nothing in the actual file until
you apply the alteration.

Many on this list prefer Sound Forge or Goldwave, both excellent choices
which I
also use daily. I'm only offering an oppinion that DC6 is also a viable
consideration for the mix

Speaking as someone who uses several different editors professionally, I
would advise that anyone intrested might be best served by trying demos of
all the major editors. Then choose the one that fits your needs, comfort
level and budget. That's why demos are out there. In the end, what works for
you is the best choice.

Peace,

Larry

The one thing I didn't like about amazon is this:
They don't seem to have any way to search by artist. I did a search for the

Emusic does the same thing, but you don't get so many useless links.
Also, I think that emusic is cheaper per single.

Please let me know if there is anything
else I can do to help.
I plan to write up a mini tutorial on this service this evening. I
think it is absolutely wonderful, as there is no DRM, and you can play
the tracks on any player you want and burn them to a CD too.

A Goldwave question.

2007-09-29 Thread Vinny Samarco
Hi,
I am a very new user of Goldwave. I have a lengthy file I want to go
through and edit. It is actually a radio broadcast from which I want to
learn how to delete the comnmercials. So, for instance, I will use ctrl A
to put my start and finish markers at the default position. At the beginning
of the file, I advance 10 minutes to the first commercial. Then I place a
start marker at the beginning of the commercial, and the finish marker at
the end of the commercial and hit delete. At that point, most of the time,
I can't press pause again to move on in the file at the cursor position, but
everything is locked up, the file won't fast rewind or forward, nor will it
play when I release pause. The only thing that gets it to work again is if
I hit space or f4, and then it jumps back to beginning of the file.
Is there any way to keep going forward in the file, deleting things as I
go forward?
Thanks for your help.

RE: sound card question

2007-09-29 Thread David Reynolds
Hi Joe,
Sorry to take so long getting back, but have been rehearsing all day,
(it takes me all day to get Because you're mine right). However, it
sounds like you have the same module I have, and in whichcase, there
should have been a disk with it. Yes, it is plug and play, but if you
want to fiddle with it, then you need to install the software.
Once done, you can go into Device control in the Soundblaster menu, and
check the box which says Monitor.
Job done,

If you have trouble finding the disk, I'll try to find some way of
getting you the software.

Best,

Dave.

Re: Burning Audible Books to CD

2007-09-29 Thread Larry N
I did speak to Audible's tech support people. They claim that the only way
to burn an audible book is with Nero. I did look at Nero 7, but aside from
its ability to burn Audible books, I don't see what it can do for me that 6
can't. I burn CDs only, and if 7 produces a superior CD, I can't see how. I
also can't see purchasing 7 when 8 is just around the corner. Guess we'll
see what it has to offer wwhen they trot it out.

Music download sites

On another thread, Tifany asked about legal download sites.

You could do worse than look at the Access World article at:

I was led to this link via Brian Hartgen's site where he mentions
Napster.

Spiralfrog.com is a legal music share site, webbased, its legal because the

Hi,

is called? I haven't downloaded music yet, but I expect it should be pretty
easy.

Hope this helps.

This popular series of MB's , M7VIG, M7VIGPro, M7VID, M7VIQ etc, all
had
built-in sound processors.

The usual one was the Pro, which used the C-Media processor

Here's the D/L drivers page

Some others used the AVANCE sound processor:

Yours most likely used the VIA VT-8375 Integrated Sound Processor:

Re: A Goldwave question.

2007-09-29 Thread Rich De Steno
No, because you cannot do anything outside the markers. You must move the
markers. If you just want to move them a limited distance, you can go into
the Set Markers option in the EDIT menu and set their times. Also, you can
press SHIFT+Left Arrow to move the Start Marker earlier in the file,
SHIFT+Right Arrow to move the Start Marker later in the file,
SHIFT+CTRL+Left Arrow to move the Finish Marker earlier in the file, or
SHIFT+CTRL+Right Arrow to move the Finish Marker later in the file. You
will be able to play only the section between the markers. The Fast forward
and Rewind do not move the markers, they only control the speed of play
within the markers.

Because when you delete the selected section the start and end markers
 are
at the same point in the file and there is nothing to play. You must
 back
up the start marker and push forward the end marker and then there will
 be
 a
section to play before and after your deletion.

 Hi,
I am a very new user of Goldwave. I have a lengthy file I want to
 go
through and edit. It is actually a radio broadcast from which I want to
learn how to delete the comnmercials. So, for instance, I will use
 ctrl
 A
to put my start and finish markers at the default position. At the
 beginning
of the file, I advance 10 minutes to the first commercial. Then I place
 a
start marker at the beginning of the commercial, and the finish marker
 at
the end of the commercial and hit delete. At that point, most of the
 time,
I can't press pause again to move on in the file at the cursor position,
 but
everything is locked up, the file won't fast rewind or forward, nor will
 it
play when I release pause. The only thing that gets it to work again is
 if
I hit space or f4, and then it jumps back to beginning of the file.
Is there any way to keep going forward in the file, deleting things
 as
 I
 go forward?
 Thanks for your help.

Getting track titles from CD when ripping to MP3

2007-09-29 Thread Dale E. Heltzer
So how do I get the track titles to either appear as the file name or as
the Title field in an MP3 file I'm ripping from an audio CD?
I can use MS Media Player 10, or Audition 1.5.
Currently, I get only track and the number, with nothing in the
information fields.
