Yes I agree with that, in most cases its extremely easy because all
one need do is to capture a sound print and work from there hardly any
additional adjustment is required.

accessibleOf course, its up to each individual what they use, but the
plug-ins I use (and I've mentioned on this list) are so that
no
scripts of any kind are required, these plug-ins are not just 1 plug-

treble filters, accessible graphical equalizer packages and so forth.
Now I do apologise, I've been trying to track down the url for these
plug-ins but as Murphy's law would have it, when I want something it
makes itself scarce but again, I'm sure you'll find my comments on
these accessible plug-ins in the pc-audio archives.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-16 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, well I thought I pretty much explained it or perhaps I didn't
explain it correctly.
A sound print is simply a portion of sound you wish to take out of
your recording, in this case a portion of hiss.
You set up the noise reduction plug-in or system to capture a portion
of the hiss which is called a noise or sound print, you'll usually
find examples of what you wish to remove or silence to a degree in
between tracks or at the start and end of recordings.
Once the print is captured, its analysed by the plug-in where upon you
can adjust the DB of noise you wish to be removed.
Plug-ins have various additional settings which can be set up before
capture takes place but again for most people they need not be changed.

If I could just add a small thought, you'd be surprised how easy some of
this stuff is to use. It's really more intimidating than it sounds.

 I,

rudimentary level, wherein I can edit, normalize, resample(if I want to
convert a file, that I have recorded, in mp3, back to wave), etc., etc.,
etc.. In other words, I haven't explored the Noise Reduction realm,

that you do not have to use the Sound Forge Noise reduction plug-ins
specifically for reducing noise or hiss, in fact its probably better
that you don't as there are far more affective and far more accessible
plug-ins out there which will work with Sound Forge and other
compatible software such as Adobe Audition, Total Recorder etc. Its

2007-11-16 Thread Vicki Wherry
I am going to be selling over 300 record albums, and I would like to know a
couple of things before I begin. Does anyone have any suggestions on
cleaning up the albums? They aren't too bad, but I'd like to clean them up

Making Long Playing Audio CD's

2007-11-16 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
Hello list members,
A few months ago, I posted on this list, a problem I had with making long
playing audio CD's.
Guess what, I found the root of the problem.
The problem was with the latest virgin of Windows Media Player which is V11.
In Windows Media Player 11, you won't be able to make long playing audio CD's.
Here is what happened when I tried to do it a few days ago.
I put together a folder that contains 20 WMA files.
Out of the 20 WMA files, it only burned 17 out of the 20 files to the CD.
When I discovered that, I got mad.
I contacted Microsoft and had them to help me role back to Windows Media Player
V10.
After I done that, I took that same folder and tried burning it to CD again.
All 20 of the WMA files got burned to the audio CD.\
I just wanted to inform everyone on this list one of the drawbacks of using
Windows Media Player v11 to make long playing audio CD's.
My best wishes thoughts hopes and prayers goes out to you all.
  John.

2007-11-16 Thread Kelly Pierce
mastering the world of PC Audio has for me required a big investment in
learning and gaining an understanding of audio concepts as well as tools.
Also, if one is not highly familiar with their screen reader and Windows
accessibility features, they will likely be lost and confused. Much of
this learning happened for me off the Internet with books and audio
tutorials. I have not found a quick fix for gaining skills in this area.

I personally don't care what people choose to use for sound reduction. I
 am
just saying that I can use the plugin that you can purchase for
 SoundForge 6
with jaws and Jim's scripts. It was cheaper for me to buy the product as
 a
bundle and I got a very good deal. The noise reduction was designed to
 work
 with the product.

I am sure someone can find better noise reduction, but how much do you
 want
to pay and do you want to struggle with using it.

 Just my opinion,

Hi Vicky,

You could try Googleing each artist/title to help determine the value.

Note that albums in pristine condition with the cover intact are worth much
more. Just like any collectable.

Another good place to check your rare items is EBay.

Re: the worth of bit rates:

2007-11-16 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Completely agree with John here. Playing music through a good hifi system
will reveal lossless format's superiority over mp3 without a doubt. It's
easy to think there's no difference playing music on a computer through
cheap speakers but you may regret compromising the quality of your
collection in the future if you hook up to a good hifi system.

MP3 is definitely more boxed in and is missing those high and low
frequencies as well as a little midband detail that are obviously stripped
away to make the file size smaller. MP3 is great for portable players with
limited disc space but that's about all.

My speaker system was home built by me.
I am also using a pare of tube amps that I built from s5 electronic kits.
Ripping the same track in MP3 verses Wma lossless sounds a little
 different.
But then again, tubes lets the sound come through as is.
MP3's sounds a little watered down while the WMA lossless sounds just like
 a
 true audio CD.
 Hope this helps.

Subject: the worth of bit rates:

I know this is a rather subjective question but I'm just looking for some
input here. I've been ripping my disks to the WMA lossless format.
However, to make a file easier to send, I ripped the same disk to
 mp3256kpbs
and it was a fifth the size of the track ripped to lossless. Now, I
 didn't
hear a difference but the reason might be because I'm playing the tracks
through only fair speakers, about $100 for the pair with a small sub
 woofer.
My question is; do those of you with better sound systems notice a real
difference in the quality of these formats?thanks for your input.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-16 Thread Curtis Delzer
I use the sound forge noise reduction plug in in only that manner, capturing
only noise at minus 100 DB and by that I mean, no speech or breath sounds do
I use as capture material because that causes swishing sounds and under
water sounding results. No thank you, I hear enough of that. Gold Wave does
a good job of that as well, and for fifty bux, that is a bargain, and if
used correctly it will do quite an amazing job as well.

Yes I agree with that, in most cases its extremely easy because all
one need do is to capture a sound print and work from there hardly any
additional adjustment is required.

 I,

rudimentary level, wherein I can edit, normalize, resample(if I
 want to
convert a file, that I have recorded, in mp3, back to wave), etc.,
 etc.,

Now before we go any further here, I think it worth reminding
 everyone
that you do not have to use the Sound Forge Noise reduction plug-ins
specifically for reducing noise or hiss, in fact its probably better
that you don't as there are far more affective and far more
 accessible
plug-ins out there which will work with Sound Forge and other
compatible software such as Adobe Audition, Total Recorder etc. Its
been a good while since I've used some of these things, I've
 referred
to them on list before so I'll dig around my software collection and
get back to the list with the name and the web site of the plug-
 ins I
 purchased.
All adjustments and settings were completely accessible with a

Learning To Use Audio Software

2007-11-16 Thread Tom
Thank you Kelly for posting some reasonable discussion on
this subject. When I was in high school my mother always
told me she couldn't drill a hole in my head and pour in the
subject material. I had to study, study and study more.
It's true for everything in life. We all have different
aptitudes and abilities and I think most of the time if we
really want to do something we'll find a way to do it.

Today there is more information available to we blind folks
than ever before. If you want it badly enough you'll find
it. It's not the smartest people who do well in life, it's
the most persistent. Keep plugging.

mastering the world of PC Audio has for me required a big
investment in learning and gaining an understanding of audio
concepts as well as tools. Also, if one is not highly
familiar with their screen reader and Windows accessibility
features, they will likely be lost and confused. Much of
this learning happened for me off the Internet with books and
audio tutorials. I have not found a quick fix for gaining
skills in this area.

Hello list,
Some of the playback controls in Real Player 11 have changed.
Go to next clip: Control right arrow
go to previous clip: control left arrow
fast forward control shift f4
rewind: control shift f3
Unlike previous versions you have to hit play control p to get Real Player
to begin playing the clip after the rewind or fast forward buttons are
pressed.

If you upgrade to sf9, you get the noise reduction for no added charge, at
least I did, for a total upgrade price at the time of $99.95, which was
 very
nice. You might be able to buy it all for $149.95? including noise
reduction, it really is worth it since, even if you don't like 9 which I
don't for reasons well known on this list, the noise reduction is updated
from 2.0A to 2.0G which costs by itself more than the upgrade cost, and it
works with all versions of Sound Forge from v4.5 and up.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-16 Thread Dane Trethowan
Yes I agree with that, in most cases its extremely easy because all
one need do is to capture a sound print and work from there hardly any
additional adjustment is required.

I'm not talking about anyone being knocked, rather, that what you are
proposing may be out of the leagues of some of us, regarding
 installing
 plug
ins, to Soundforge and all the ramifications that this feat may
 involve!
 I,
for one, have used Soundforge 6.0, for quite awhile, but, on only a
rudimentary level, wherein I can edit, normalize, resample(if I
 want to
convert a file, that I have recorded, in mp3, back to wave), etc.,
 etc.,
etc.. In other words, I haven't explored the Noise Reduction

Its
been a good while since I've used some of these things, I've
 referred
to them on list before so I'll dig around my software collection and
get back to the list with the name and the web site of the plug-
 ins I
 purchased.
All adjustments and settings were completely accessible with a
 screen
reader providing feedback when adjustments were made.

Lossless formats

2007-11-16 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi
This may seem a stupid question but please humour me.
When ripping with different programs, e.g. Nero, Windows Media Player etc. if I
wish to use Windows Media Lossless format does it matter which program I use?
Is it likely that Media Player might have the better codec as it is a Microsoft
program or as I suspect, lossless means lossless in which ever program the
files are ripped. I know it shouldn't make any difference, but do some programs
get a better and more reliable rip?
Regards.

How much is the package
and does the Noise Reduction plug-in include click and crackle removal for
vinyl? Or the vinyl plug-ins separate from noise reduction?

The Sound Forge I sell comes with the Noise Reduction plug-in as well
as CD Architect. That's been the case for a couple of years. I have heard
however of people purchasing Sound Forge new without the Noise Reduction
plug-in while I was selling it with the Noise Reduction plug-in.
