Determining Codec Level or Version in Easy CDDA Extractor

2008-09-03 Thread Steve Matzura
Up until this morning, I've been using version 10 of Easy CDDA
Extractor. I recently used it to convert a batch of files from FLAC
to APE format and discovered that, after conversion, the APE files had
lost their time information records. This turned out to be a bug in
the Monkey's Audio 3.99 version, which has been replaced/updated in
the new Easy CDDA Extractor, but I don't know how to find out with
what version it was replaced. The newest is supposedly 4.01. How do
I find this out before converting another large batch of these files
and finding their duration records also gone missing?

Re: Sound forge question

2008-09-03 Thread Rays Home
Hi, I have a Power Users Guide in print to Sound Forge 7 and 8 and I'm
pretty sure that advanced batching and scripting options are available only
in Sound Forge 8 and beyond. This would allow, surely, for complex tasks
such as combining many smaller files into one large one. (Isn't there a way
in the command line utilities within Windows to actually do this?)

I throw these in as pointers, but will willingly defer to a guru on SF and
Windows/DOS batch language.

On the subject of accessing SF9 propperly, I believe JFW users have some
good scripts curtasy of the Snowman. Surely only a mater of time before
someone does the same for Window-Eyes 7 when its teathing troubles with
scripting are sorted. Same might go for HAL 9 too.

Ray.

Hi there.

Yes I had tried the properties suggestion with the 0 in the seconds box, it
didn't work.

It is an LG burner.

I did try it on an old liteon burner and it still didn't work but then Nero
told me I needed a cdrw disk instead of a cdr disk to do this, crazy!

Oh well.
I am going to try a real audio blank but I doubt that will solve the problem.

 Hello again.

Well I tried it the way you suggest and it didn't work but wait! there is
 more.

Nero put up an error message saying that in the current write mode some of
the audio properties are not supported by your burner. It then said that
if I clicked ok it would adjust the properties to fit and that ment
 reinserting the pauses between tracks.

Is this totally a hardware issue? Do I have to buy a different burner to
 support no silence between tracks?

Is it a mode setting such as an ISO cd versas something else?

Do I absolutely have to use an audio blank in this case rather then a data
 CD?

Any light from you guru's out there?

 Thanks again in advance.

Well this sounds like a real novice question and thats ok but believe me
its
not, or at least I don't think so.

I did some audio editing in Goldwave cutting sections from large audio
files
and breaking them out to several small files.

I made sure each cut was trimmed nicely removing any silence at ends of
both
files.
I then fired up Nero 6 to create the audio cd.

I encountered the following problems.

Here was my goal first of all.
You need this to understand the problem.

I wanted an audio cd that played every track automaticly with no silence
or
gaps between tracks.

I checked the no gaps between tracks or however Nero says it on the
beginning screen.

That didn't work.

I then created another cd where I checked the same box but then went in to
the advanced controls and checked remove silence at end of cda trakcs and
even with both boxes checked it didn't work.

If I played track 1 I manually had to advance to track 2 it just wouldn't
play on its own unattended.

What is going wrong?

Is it a bug with my particular version of Nero?
Am I missing something, thats entirely possible?

I need to create an audio cd with tracks but where one track plays rapid
fire right after another as if there were no tracks.

Yes I could merge the files in to one file and burbn it that way but I
really wanted the track marks.

what am I doing wrong?

I need this for voice over demos and thats the way they want them these
days.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Don

RE: av reciver or stereo reciever

2008-09-03 Thread Blackwell, Clifford
Yes, it can. I have a Xitle HiFi link that plugs into a usb port on the
computer and then into the aux in on the Onkyo receiver. This bypasses
the sound card so the sound is excellent. The receiver treats the input
from the computer just as it would any other input device.

I have things set up so that music plays through the stereo, but Jaws
and other Windows sounds go through the computer speakers. I'm sure you
can run everything through the receiver speakers though.

Ok this is my opinion for what its worth, there's a really nice
bargain-priced amp out there with surround-soung, yep its only 5.1
 but
if you're looking for a genuine bargain and you're really interested
in 2 channel sound rather than really interested in rearranging your
room for surround-sound and you just want a good stereo amp (despite
the extra 5.1 affect) then take a look at the unit found at
 http://www.oo.com.au/Multi_Channel_Power_Amplifier_P7417.cfm
Of course the other way you can go is to do some digging and find
 that
second-hand treasure for a song, too many to mention here smile.
 but
one model I like which seems to come up every so often around the
traps is the Technics SUZ11, its a very small slim line AMp and
delivers 50 watts RMS per channel, its small enough to tuck under
 your
arm so if you're in the habit of rearanging things or needing an amp
small enough to take to a small hall with a bit of punch then this
is
the amp. Not much to rave about in the features steaks, just 3
inputs
(fono, AUX and Tuner) and 2 stereo speaker outputs (A and B) but in
the Hi-Fi game? Well sound quality comes well before features
 smile.

I personally don't believe in buying receivers, I prefer to match a
good tuner with my amp but each to their own, in the tuner steaks
there are 2 kinds, one which gives you a narrow band with good
sensitivity and the other giving you a nice wide band, great audio
quality but not so sensitive. I have 2 different Denon tuners here
each fitting the characteristics I've just outlined but e warned,
 even
on the second-hand market these little beauties fetch a few hundred
dollars and their FM quality is truly outstanding.

As a final thought, if I were going to go for a receiver and I
wasn't
at all too concerned about surround-sound? Well give the Denon
 AVR2000
a look over, fetches about $300.00 on the second-hand market but
I've
seen them go higher in price, a truly outstanding 5.1 receiver with
 80
watts RMS per channel (that includes the 2 rear channels) and an
 excellent wide band tuner.

Did I answer any of your questions? Probably not, I just rambled
 smile.

Recording audio from a VCR

How does one record onto a PC from a VCR without hum? I have tried both
patching the two together directly and by using a mixer. I don't get
this hum from any other source, and I have recorded onto a cassette deck
in the past from the same machine. Do I need special cables? If so,
where does one get them? I have already tried my neighborhood Radio
Shack store. Thank you for any help you can give.

Mary,

It is likely you have a ground loop between the computer and
the VCR. Radio Shack sells a ground loop isolator, number,
two seven zero dash zero five four for around fifteen
dollars. It is cylinder shaped, maybe four inches long and
an inch and a half in diameter. It has a stereo cable coming
out of each end with male RCA connectors. An adaptor with
female RCA connectors on one end and a mini plug on the other
end is included. I've had great success using these.

Subject: Re: av reciver or stereo reciever

Ok this is my opinion for what its worth, there's a really nice
bargain-priced amp out there with surround-soung, yep its only 5.1
 but
if you're looking for a genuine bargain and you're really
 interested
in 2 channel sound rather than really interested in rearranging
 your
room for surround-sound and you just want a good stereo amp
 (despite
the extra 5.1 affect) then take a look at the unit found at
 http://www.oo.com.au/Multi_Channel_Power_Amplifier_P7417.cfm
Of course the other way you can go is to do some digging and find
 that
second-hand treasure for a song, too many to mention here smile.
 but
one model I like which seems to come up every so often around the
traps is the Technics SUZ11, its a very small slim line AMp and
delivers 50 watts RMS per channel, its small enough to tuck under
 your
arm so if you're in the habit of rearanging things or needing an
 amp
small enough to take to a small hall with a bit of punch then this
 is

Probably not, I just rambled
 smile.

Problems creating an audio cd with Neero, a puzzler!

2008-09-03 Thread Donald Breda
Well this sounds like a real novice question and thats ok but believe me its
not, or at least I don't think so.

I did some audio editing in Goldwave cutting sections from large audio files
and breaking them out to several small files.

I made sure each cut was trimmed nicely removing any silence at ends of both
files.
I then fired up Nero 6 to create the audio cd.

I encountered the following problems.

Here was my goal first of all.
You need this to understand the problem.

I wanted an audio cd that played every track automaticly with no silence or
gaps between tracks.

I checked the no gaps between tracks or however Nero says it on the beginning
screen.

That didn't work.

I then created another cd where I checked the same box but then went in to the
advanced controls and checked remove silence at end of cda trakcs and even with
both boxes checked it didn't work.

If I played track 1 I manually had to advance to track 2 it just wouldn't play
on its own unattended.

What is going wrong?

Is it a bug with my particular version of Nero?
Am I missing something, thats entirely possible?

I need to create an audio cd with tracks but where one track plays rapid fire
right after another as if there were no tracks.

Yes I could merge the files in to one file and burbn it that way but I really
wanted the track marks.

what am I doing wrong?

I need this for voice over demos and thats the way they want them these days.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Yes I sure did. The problem is either that nero doesn't think an audio cd can
support this feature or that the burner doesn't support it or that the cdr
blank may really have to be an audio blank for it to work.

I have tried it on two different machines with the same version of nero, same
blanks, but different burners.

On both machines nero complained but with different messages.

However the result was the same, letting nero do its recommended fix always
resulted in reinserting the pauses.

I am going to try trakc at once once again instead of disk at once and see what
happens.

On machine A, the warnning was some of the features are not supported in this
write mode, nero can fix this but some audio properties may be lost.

If I clicked ok it reinserts the pauses no matter how I insert them whether in
properties or by checking the no pause between tracks box.

On machine B, Nero also complains but says a cdrw disk is needed to support
this and you have a cdr disk.

This message to me is even stranger and makes no sense.

If I continue with this I am going to try once again to do track at once on
machine A, and may or may not try anything on machine B, not sure yet.

Thanks for the help.

This should have been a no brainner.

Hi there.

Yes I had tried the properties suggestion with the 0 in the
seconds box, it didn't work.

It is an LG burner.

I did try it on an old liteon burner and it still didn't
work but then Nero told me I needed a cdrw disk instead of a
cdr disk to do this, crazy!

Oh well.
I am going to try a real audio blank but I doubt that will
solve the problem.

Station Playlist Studio question.

2008-09-03 Thread James Scholes
Hi all,
I am trying out Station Playlist Studio. One question though, well, actually
two: When I faid down music using the M key, and then speak into the
microphone, the output I hear in my headphones is a few seconds behind. So, for
instance if I say Hello, I hear that Hello about a second later, or it
maybe a couple of seconds, I'm not sure. Also, how can I change the faid level
on the microphone? So when I press the M key, can I change the settings for the
faid that occurs?

 Greetings,

How does one record onto a PC from a VCR without hum? I have tried both
patching the two together directly and by using a mixer. I don't get
this hum from any other source, and I have recorded onto a cassette deck
in the past from the same machine. Do I need special cables? If so,

If you're just doing audio, why not just have an audio lead connected
from the Video recorder to the sound card, are we talking about
recording audio from video cassettes here or are we using the recorder
to record audio from TV broadcasts, depending on the situation there
are other avenues and pieces of software you can use but the one I
strongly suggest you look at here is Total Recorder (preferably the
professional version).

I got the Xitle from http://www.jr.com. I believe it was just under
$50. It is strictly an output device, but at JR and other places, there
is a Xitle device for around the same price that can be used to go the
other way.

I just plugged the Xitle HiFi link in and it did the splitting itself.
It is important to have your speech synthesizer on )not necessarily
talking) then plug the Xitle in and wait for the USB recognition tone
and only then start your media player.

I think that Jaws doesn't relinquish the internal sound card when the
computer recognises the HiFi Link for some reason and it works well.

Good luck!

Hi Clifford,

Where did you get the Xitle and how much did it cost? Does it just do
output, or will it act as an input device? Also, how do you split the
speech output from music output?

Thanks much,
Tim

Re: Station Playlist Studio question.

2008-09-03 Thread Steve Matzura
Although this does loosely have to do with audio on the PC, your
question would get much better and qualified answers on the Station
Playlist support list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). The
short answer to all your questions is yes, very doable all around.
There are reasons for what you are experiencing, and ways around those
problems.

Hi all,
I am trying out Station Playlist Studio. One question though, well, actually
two: When I faid down music using the M key, and then speak into the
microphone, the output I hear in my headphones is a few seconds behind. So,
for instance if I say Hello, I hear that Hello about a second later, or it
maybe a couple of seconds, I'm not sure. Also, how can I change the faid level
on the microphone? So when I press the M key, can I change the settings for
the faid that occurs?

Yes you soitenly may! I hope it's not a Pro version, as I am only
licensed for the basic one but am considering the pro one.

Re: Recording audio from a VCR

2008-09-03 Thread Dane Trethowan
Right, well you'll need a lead say (by the sounds of things) a 3.5MM
stereo minijack to RCA lead, most VCR'S have a RCA audio output (at
least 1), the next thing you need to know is the recorder stereo or
Mono? If stereo you need a 3.5MM stereo jack to 2 RCA female plugs, if
mono then just 1 RCA female plug.

This lead then goes from the audio input of the sound device of your
laptop to the audio output of the VCR. Your laptop may have 1 or 2
(or none) audio inputs, if none then you'll need another sound device
but perhaps for the sake of clarity, that can wait (if need be) for
another post so let's assume your laptop has at least 1 input. you
may need to adjust the gain of this input if its a Mic input, you'll
need to turn the gain right down, if its a Line input then everything
should be fine, run a few tests and see what happens, hope this helps.

OK, total recorder's a piece of software, correct?

How does one connect something directly in to the sound card?

My friend uses a laptop does this make any difference?

 Thanks

If you're just doing audio, why not just have an audio lead connected
from the Video recorder to the sound card, are we talking about
recording audio from video cassettes here or are we using the
 recorder
to record audio from TV broadcasts, depending on the situation there
are other avenues and pieces of software you can use but the one I
strongly suggest you look at here is Total Recorder (preferably the
 professional version).

a scart lead leading from the line out on the vcr in to a usb on the

Once connected successfully, does one need specific software etc and
 what's
the precise procedure as its not something I'm familiar with doing
 and my
friend is a new computer user so, precise info welcome, thanks

 Greetings,

How does one record onto a PC from a VCR without hum? I have tried
 both
patching the two together directly and by using a mixer. I don't
 get
this hum from any other source, and I have recorded onto a cassette
 deck
in the past from the same machine. Do I need special cables? If so,
where does one get them? I have already tried my neighborhood Radio
Shack store. Thank you for any help you can give.

 Blessings,

 Mari

RE: Recording audio from a VCR

2008-09-03 Thread mary dole
Hello Again,

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will try the ground loop isolator,
as the hum sounds like an unbalanced line. I know I'm not trying to
record from the video out jack, as I have recorded onto a cassette deck
from this VCR before. Thanks again.

Leadtek Winfast HDTV2000 TV Tuner card revisited

2008-09-03 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi everyone!

I promised the list I'd write more on this device as I found out more
about the many features available through the software as I continued to
learn how to use the system so here's something else which I've discovered.

With digital TV in Australia, viewers have access to an EPG (Electronic
Programme guide), the Winfast system takes advantage of this EPG, you're
supposed to be able to click on a programme of interest and the
software automatically schedules this programme to be recorded at the
appropriate time. Well I haven't worked out how to do that yet but what
I have found out is that if you start a recording manually or schedule a
recording to be made without specifying a file name for the recording,
the Winfast software uses the EPG to formulate an appropriate filename.
For example, let's look at Saturday's EPG in Melbourne Victoria,
specifically Saturday afternoon and we see that ABC1 is broadcasting VFL
football from 1 in the afternoon so if I manually started recording from
that point or set the scheduler to start recording from that time or
from any time during the duration of the VFL Football programme, without
a specified filename, the Winfast software would automatically save the
recorded content to a file with a given date and time plus the name of
the programme as gathered from the EPg, the file name would look
something like this, Video 2008-06-09 ABC VFL Football.mpg.

Lots more to discover yet smile but unfortunately my playtime is
severely restricted as I'm looking after a sick Mother and I'm spending
a lot of time away from home, commuting to Merimbula and back etc but
I'll get there eventually smile.
