Hi All, I have over three terrabytes of mp3 files and am thinking of the
future when these types of files will not be used any more. What program
should I get to convert mp3 to the newer formats. I currently use
soundforge 9.e , or adobe audition 3.0 to do batch file conversion from
cda to mp3 or wav format.

Any informationwill be greatly apppreciated.

Because they are too poor in sound quality, and too large in file size; and
because the MPEG3 standard has already been superseded by the MPEG4/AAC
standard, which gives better sound quality, with better rates of

Anyone tried the new Kindole 2?

2009-02-10 Thread Mac Norins
Dear list,

I don't think this is off topic, for the PC Audio list, but, the moderator can
be the judge. I recently got a post from an author, regarding the new Kindle 2
device, from Amazon. I am perusing the support section, to determine if the
Read To Me feature, which they say is still in the experimental stage, will
work, for Blind users. If anyone has tried this device, please let us know if
it works for you! Here is a link, to Amazon, that may get all of us to the
support documentation: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00154JDAI?tag=RANBA

Let me know if the link works, as well!

more on .avi to data DVD subject

2009-02-10 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos

Let us know if that worked for you by using Nero to make a data DVD from those
.avi files you have and then using your home DVD player to play them back. I
sure didn't know this was possible to make them play on home DVD player.
Usually you have to convert the .avi files to DVD using a converter program.
Why are you using a DVD RW disc? You should only use a DVD -R or +R blank disc.
Most players now support both disc types but check your manual to be sure of
this.

If you have Replay AV 8 latest version you get Replay Converter application
which will do the .avi conversion to DVD NTSC (USA, Canada and some other
countries). I know the program is accessible because I use it and am a beta
tester for them. I use JAWS 10. These .avi files how did you obtain them? From
a camera?

You can also do DVD PAL format disc for playback in most other countries with
Replay Converter.

Applian makes Replay AV which comes bundled with Replay Converter. They have 30
day money back guarantee if it doesn't work for you the video conversions to
DVD disc.

I have done .avi file conversions to DVD disc myself in the past. These .avi
files were from a digital camera that records in .avi format.

2009-02-10 Thread Pam Drake
Here's an old message that appeared on Blindtech about the original
machine. I stress that this message refers to the original unit, so I
agree we'll have to wait to see if the player itself is any more
accessible than the original which, according to this message,
concentrates on giving the illusion of reading a hard copy book. The
fact the last person who posted info on this saw only information about
speech output and references to flipping pages, and nothing about access
to the unit by the blind, I'd tend to doubt it has anything more than
the Stream has to recommend it for us; but it will be interesting to see
if I am proven right or wrong.

Subject: Re: Kindle reader

As far as I'm aware, the Kindle has no TTS, so there is nothing to speak
the menus or print books on the device. It is an Audible-ready device
and will play mp3 files, but if one is going to spend the price of a
Kindle then the VR Stream is in the price range and would provide
significantly more usability to a blind person. The VR Stream is also
Audible-ready and plays mp3 files as well as ogg vorbis and unprotected
WMA files. More importantly, it has TTS to speak the menus and navigate
the files.

The Kindle was primarily designed to be an E-text reader and that's
where its strength and popularity lies. I'm told by sighted folks that
have seen or own a Kindle that the screen really does give the person
the feeling that they are reading a printed book. I understand it has
the largest screen of any of the current E-text readers and that it
really does an amazing job of looking like a printed page rather than an
electronic screen. But that superior technology does nothing for a blind
person. If you just want a device to listen to audiobooks, then there
are many other much, much less expensive options available.

Now, if you have some usable vision and want to be able to read printed
material, then perhaps the Kindle would be a device worth looking at
just for the reasons I stated above: It has one of the largest screens
and has been designed to be very easy on the eyes. I also understand its
font enlargement capability is very good too.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

Subject: converting mp3 to gp3 or mp4 etc question

Hi All, I have over three terrabytes of mp3 files and am thinking of the
future when these types of files will not be used any more. What
program should I get to convert mp3 to the newer formats. I currently
use soundforge 9.e , or adobe audition 3.0 to do batch file conversion
from cda to mp3 or wav format.

Any informationwill be greatly apppreciated.

Re: more on .avi to data DVD subject

2009-02-10 Thread Keith Gillard
Hmm.

No luck with Nero.
Perhaps I should have made things more clear here.
I don't just want the audio from the .avi files.
I want to burn them, in tact, on to a suitable meadia for play in my home
DVD region 1.

Replay wont do the job in demo mode either. I refuse to buy before I try.

Any other suggestions will be gratefully received.

Cheers.

Subject: more on .avi to data DVD subject

Let us know if that worked for you by using Nero to make a data DVD from
those .avi files you have and then using your home DVD player to play them
back. I sure didn't know this was possible to make them play on home DVD
player. Usually you have to convert the .avi files to DVD using a converter
program. Why are you using a DVD RW disc? You should only use a DVD -R or +R
blank disc. Most players now support both disc types but check your manual
to be sure of this.

From a camera?

You can also do DVD PAL format disc for playback in most other countries
with Replay Converter.

Applian makes Replay AV which comes bundled with Replay Converter. They have
30 day money back guarantee if it doesn't work for you the video conversions
to DVD disc.

I have done .avi file conversions to DVD disc myself in the past. These .avi
files were from a digital camera that records in .avi format.

Re: converting mp3 to gp3 or mp4 etc question

2009-02-10 Thread Dana S. Leslie
On the other hand, I have to agree with those who say that, since
implementations of the MP3 standard are so ubiquitous, support for them is
not likely to disappear any time soon. But, in answer to only the question
of why such support *might eventually* go the way of the Edsel, I cite
MPEG4/AAC. But, then, again, there are always the counter-examples of VHS
and other inferior technologies that gained early market-share predominance,
and significantly suppressed the market-acceptance of other, superior
technologies.

Good point, Dana! I think that when you get something that gives you a
smaller file size yet better sound quality, then that's great, and we've
then made progress in sound reproduction!

Because they are too poor in sound quality, and too large in file size;
and because the MPEG3 standard has already been superseded by the
MPEG4/AAC standard, which gives better sound quality, with better rates
of compression.

Since MP3's are popular, why would their use be discontinued?
