I use a Sound Blaster Live. Sound Blaster Gold is a better one. Just
depends on how much the quality matters to you. Not sure what you mean by
"four track". Do you mean Talking Book four track mono? In this case,
nearly anything that is good at all and with aline input will do. If
you're talking about stereo reel to reel tapes, then you'd probably want a
fairly good and quiet card. There are even USB sound cards that are very
good these days. As for software, my favorite for doing the transfer is
Goldwave. Very accessible and easy to use after getting used to it. You
can make very precise edits with it and you can have a free demo version
that lets you do up to 100 operations per boot session. You can buy it for
$45 U.S. at least that's what I paid for it and don't think the price has
changed. If you don't need the editing function then CDEX is your choice.
It is completely free. Will record sound to several formats including .wav
and mp3. For burning the CD I prefer Nero but EZ CD DA extractor is also
very good and it can do conversions as well as burn. So you have several
choices and others on this list probably have others as well.

I do this kind of thing all the time. You need a sound card and an
audio patch cord that will connect between the output of the cassette
machine and the line in of the sound card. To record I prefer Goldwave
as you can not only record, but precisely edit the beginning and end of
each track or segment however you want the files to be and you can also
set the volume level to maximum without distortion and even do some
noise reduction in many cases. CDex will also record directly in mp3
format and you can turn on normalization to set the level but there's no
editing or noise reduction features. And you'll also want Nero or other
CD writing software and, of course, a CD-R drive which come with just
about every computer these days to turn the sound files to CD. If you
want audio CDs that will play on any CD player then you'll want to
record the files as .wav instead of mp3 but the process is the same
regardless of what kind of final CD you want. Mp3 files won't usually
play on audio CD players but should play on DVD players. Hope this
helps.

So, all you intrepid souls out there, I thank you so far for all your help.
I now seem to be able to use What you Hear" using Total Recorder as long as
I use an external microphone and not the little mikes on the Asus. I've
also installed Winamp today after losing my temper one too many times with
Windows Media Player. Now the files I play using Winamp sound really
distorted. Anyone know what that's about? Again, I'm using Playback and
record through Total Recorder and am running Windows XP Home Edition. And
while we're on the subject of annoying questions, could someone tell me how
to stop that snazzy little touchpad from constantly making me lose focus?
I've slowed the mouse down (I think) but I just have to think and Jaws focus
goes to the desktop or My documents or whatever I might have open.
Extremely annoying and won't do at all when we try to do webradio!

Thanks again so much for all your help!

Peace,
Kathy

The new talking Ipod shuffle

2009-03-11 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos

Apple Releases New iPod Shuffle With Speech Capabilities
Nick Mediati, PC World

Mar 11, 2009 12:40 pm

Another Tuesday, another new Apple product. Following up last week's new
desktop announcements, Apple today released a redesigned iPod Shuffle. Even
smaller than the last one, the new iPod Shuffle has no playback controls on the
player itself--instead, the playback controls are on the headphone wire. This
change does beg the question: What happens if you lose the bundled headphones?
Does this rule out using third-party headphones?

The big new feature is the iPod Shuffle's inclusion of Apple's VoiceOver
technology. VoiceOver on Mac OS X is Apple's built-in screen reader for the
visually impaired. On the iPod Shuffle, VoiceOver will read you the current
song's title and artist information with a touch of a button. The function was
added to iTunes last fall.

According to Apple, VoiceOver now makes it possible to switch between playlists
on the iPod Shuffle. The iPod Shuffle is multi-lingual, and knows how to speak
14 languages, including Spanish, Japanese, Greek, and Dutch. This begs another
question: What happens if you play a song tagged as explicit? Apple's press
release makes no mention of what happens, but wouldn't it be amusing if it
spoke a warning to you? Imagine: "I'm afraid I can't play that, Dave."

The new iPod Shuffle costs $79 and stores 4GB worth of music, or roughly 1000
songs. If you want one, you'll need WIndows XP SP3 or Windows Vista (or Mac OS
X 10.4.11 or higher), and iTunes 8.

Stopping winamp going to Gracenote - an answer

2009-03-11 Thread Ray
Thanks Chris.

I tried what you suggested in ripping settings but that didn't do it.

Looking on the net though, I came on the answer: Disable internet access in
general preferences. That might mean I can't point to URL locations and
play them in winamp, but nbe obliged to download before opening URLs
pointing to media on the net.

A few might be interested in the article I found, which airs a suspician -
which we all hope isn't true - that Winamp maybe using a rootkit to track
CDs played on your computer. Certainly hope not, but further searching may
be needed.

Extract from:

http://www.spywarepoint.com/winamp-gracenote-using-rootkit-t56306.html
Ray.

When I stick in a new CD and have winamp play it, a window pops up
stating "Retrieving CD Information...Powered by Gracenote CDDB..."

A few problems:

It is not obvious how to disable this, and once disabled (supposedly),
it is not easy to verify.

Why? Because if you use NeoMonitor or netstat to monitor your internet
connections before you disable it, WinAmp is accessing the internet in
a way that is invisible to both neomonitor and netstat.

This seems to me to be evidence of a SONY like rootkit?

Anybody know what port winamp is using? What IP address it is going
to?

How to disable (according to USENET...but no way to verify since winamp
is going to the internet in stealth mode...):

Options->Preferences->General Preferences->Select your internet
connection type: ->Not connected to the internet

(NOTE: This does disable the gracenote/winamp window from popping up,
but may not disable internet accesses reporting what CDs you have
played on your computer.)

For a long time this has been driving me nuts!

As subject indicates, I simply can't for the life of me see how to stop
Winamp going to the on-line database for each and every Cd I try to play.
Worse still, it does it everytime I change tracks.

Most CDs I play these days are my own creations so, obviously, it isn't
going to find anything. So please, come on someone, please tell me how to
stop Winamps intrsive behaviour.

(I might kick myself if the answer is obvious, but it sin'isn't for lack of

I do this kind of thing all the time. You need a sound card and an audio
patch cord that will connect between the output of the cassette machine and
the line in of the sound card. To record I prefer Goldwave as you can not
only record, but precisely edit the beginning and end of each track or
segment however you want the files to be and you can also set the volume
level to maximum without distortion and even do some noise reduction in
many cases. CDex will also record directly in mp3 format and you can turn
on normalization to set the level but there's no editing or noise reduction
features. And you'll also want Nero or other CD writing software and, of
course, a CD-R drive which come with just about every computer these days
to turn the sound files to CD. If you want audio CDs that will play on any
CD player then you'll want to record the files as .wav instead of mp3 but
the process is the same regardless of what kind of final CD you want. Mp3
files won't usually play on audio CD players but should play on DVD
players. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I have a couple of old recordings that were done on a 4-track cassette
machine. Is there a way I can convert that to an audio cd?

Thank you.

Fwd: Selective Auto-Answer Program for Skype Is Back

2009-03-11 Thread Steve Pattison
 From:Chris & Doris chipmu...@gmx.net
 To: gui-t...@nfbnet.org

Not sure how many of you guys wil want this functionality but a few
of you skype veterans might remember the autoanswer functionality
that Mr.Doug Lee's jaws scripts for skype used to give us several
years and skype versions ago where an autoanswer function could be
enabled for selected users.

When the skype interface hchanged with version 3.x, this
functionality could no longer be provided by Mr.lee's scripts and i
missed it. i eeventualy found a third party program that provided the
functionality but the developer discontinued supporting the program
sometime back.

I kept in touch with him over timeand he just let me know that a new
version of the selective auto-answer program was ready for download
and testing.

It is a very small and very simple program and the developer has done
a superb job with the accessibility of it. This version is the best
yet in that regard. everything reads well with both jaws and nvda. If
you want to give it a try, find the url for it below.

Just extract the program and enclosed .dll to a directory of your
choice and run it by entering on the executable. the first time you
run the program, you need to allow it access to skype as with any
program that accesses the skype api. You will find it in your events
panel - that's in skype 3.8 or by going into the "managing other
programs' access to skype" section in the advanced options of skype.

Have fun and happy skyping!

Cheers,

Doris

For a long time this has been driving me nuts!

As subject indicates, I simply can't for the life of me see how to stop
Winamp going to the on-line database for each and every Cd I try to play.
Worse still, it does it everytime I change tracks.

Most CDs I play these days are my own creations so, obviously, it isn't
going to find anything. So please, come on someone, please tell me how to
stop Winamps intrsive behaviour.

(I might kick myself if the answer is obvious, but it sin'isn't for lack of
trying on my part.)
Ray.
